Most people “I’ll add a parachute but if I ever use it then the plane will be likely be totaled.”
Mike “I’ll add a parachute and do it so well that I can stay in the plane and fly it out of there the next day. Then I’ll test fire a chute just to make sure it actually works like I planned it.”
Mike you are a cut above buddy! Love these videos.

Don't forget that this is a carbon fiber plane. Meaning the strength per cubic measuring value of your choice VS the standard variant (ignoring all the bells and whistles) is off the charts. You could probably bend a cub in half if you snapped those lines strong enough in a fall, where as the carbon fiber might bend, might even stress, but i doubt there can be forces involved that can deform the super structure short of a full dive, but then parachutes or not, you'd have a bad day.
If all things were square and equal, this is how all planes should be built. Mike is fortunate enough to be able to do it, and who knows, things he learns and shares, will maybe trickle down to everyone else.

    • @williamwilliams8145
      @williamwilliams8145 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

The problem is the softer you want the plane to land on the chute, the heavier and larger the chute would have be.
He could experiment with airbags in the belly of the plane to save it i suppose.

It seems like every episode I am just dumbfounded by the carbon fiber work you do. Other youtubers seem to put a ton of effort into their work and it comes out between "meh" and "it'll work". You make custom molds and one-off parts look like something that wouldn't be out of place on a Koenigsegg. Fantastic.

Yeah, keep it like it is. Don’t need a bunch of producers ‘adding value’ and in the process messing it all up. I personally love the low budget production look.
Also his goal is to get ppl into aviation, and I think this simple YT channel will do it WAY better than an overproduced, 30min, ad ridden, program that skips all the good bits (mold building / carbon layup) and dumbs it down for the masses.

As far as finding my passion for something to do, Mike that takes money. I've been disabled for 13 years now. The money I had stashed away for retirement disintegrated when my inlaws were refused their hard earned health care from the VA. My father in law was an electronics engineer and worked for the navy during the was one of a handful of guys that designed, built and installed surface contact radar that allowed us to hunt down Nazi Uboats at night while they were recharging!

Mike, I came across your TH-cam channel sometime ago and instantly I was hooked. I am a 64 year old man who always wanted to learn to fly. Unfortunately, making a living and raising a family got in the way. Then, at an age when I might invest the time and money to get my private pilot certification, I learned I had cancer, was treated for it and survived. One of the side effects of my treatment, however, is peripheral neuropathy (severe nerve pain) that requires use of narcotic pain medication to treat. That precludes me from passing the physical. So, I now live vicariously through videos of people like you who are enthusiasts. You are my favorite. I wait on pins and needles for each episode. Please, whatever you do, keep these videos coming. I absolutely love what you do!

That's when I went to get my physical for my student ticket and found out I was color blind and would never get to earn my commercial ticket to fly ag planes. I was crushed. I did learn to get my "fix" flying RC and flew for about 40 years or so until the doc once again crushed me and said no more getting out in the sun because of all of my skin cancers. I'm trying now to find a place to fly indoor planes, oh, and find a way to buy some planes for indoor flight. You have made me want to fly so much more now. I love your passion sir. I love it when I see Harbor Freight Tool products in the background a supremely talented, multi-millionaire's, workshop. It give me a sense of hope. I think I have the same yellow handled concrete hammer / precision metal forming tool and giant yellow speed square.

My parent's house was just a few houses away from Marks so I got to grow up next to him and work for him many years and back then they where not into flying yet so we would build jeeps/ rock crawlers in the driveway and as long as the tool or rock sometimes lol got the job done was good enough it didn't have to be Snap-on just because he could afford it. The first plane Mark built was literally in the driveway 🤣 Many fun times and fun stories they are both so full of energy and knowledge not to mention caring and friendly. Some of the best times of my childhood and teen years were spent destroying perfectly good vehicles to build some never seen before rock crawlers.

Might I take just a moment to tell you how grateful I am for your incredible intuitive instruction through demonstration, your remarkable abilities to impart technical skills by simple concise explanations while presenting clear examples. I have accrued an ample level of knowledge to feel comfortable with the notion of laying up carbon myself' never having had any practical experience.
It is of great benefit to learn by doing' as there are few substitutes for first hand application, albeit' having seen your comfortable demeanor and simple explanations of incremental steps within a process clearly foster cognitive visualization, immersing the viewer by progressive illustration is nearly equivalent to having had hands on experience, thank you so much.

Love this build, so excited to see scrappy fly!!! Makes me want to get a pilots license again! I was lucky my High school had a plane, 1977 152. Now I don’t think you could get the insurance needed. Mike your such a positive influence for all who want to fly! Thank you

Amazing attention to details Mike. I was a lifelong wood butcher. Worked on some pretty high end millwork projects including Disneyland projects and huge Aquarium projects. Even Installed millwork in a store in the World Trade Center about 2 years before it was hit by the planes and came down. Also have done work on custom jet interiors and custom Yacht interiors. So needless to say I am fascinated by your projects. I have never worked with Carbon fiber but did a few fiberglass cloth projects which seems somewhat similar. Just not quite as messy. Can't wait to see that test. Good Luck Mike, but then anybody who does the kind of top quality work you do doesn't need luck.

You and so many other you tubers out there have been such an inspiration to me. I recently started the long road to my A&P license and launching my own business in aviation helping others to learn and grow. I also started the initial planning stages on building a composite version of the DH90 Dragonfly. One day I would love to sit and just talk airplanes with you and your brother. Maybe bounce some ideas off you guys. Keep spreading the joy of aviation, let’s all get back to work now!

Thanks for the update Mike!!!!! If you ever find yourself in or passing through Kansas City, I'd love to meet you! My Grandfather was a pilot and an instructor. I only remember flying with him once before he lost his medical card (He was also a firefighter and developed severe COPD). I flew gliders for a while and my dad and I built and flew R/C for years. I want to get my powered license but at the moment it isn't in the budget. Two kids and a wife who deserves home renovations have to come first. Anyway, I can't wait to see how Scrappy turns out. Now, back to work!
