UPDATE: Pacific Drive is available now as early access (free demo), and here are my thoughts why it is awesome: th-cam.com/video/DNjpPBdMGSk/w-d-xo.html Also, if you want to see 6 Similarities Pacific Drive HAS to Subnautica then check this video out: th-cam.com/video/KpG9udeK7UQ/w-d-xo.html
If I may add another suggestion: Grounded. I often describe it as "Subnautica meets Honey I Shrunk the Kids." While it's more combat based, its strong narrative and diverse base building mechanics are similar. Like Subnautica, it has an engrossing mystery. Like Subnautica, it rewards you for exploring. It also will also terrify you. If you don't have arachnophobia, you will by the time you're done playing this.
This is legitimately one of the closest survival games I've played to subnautica since then. I don't scream when I play scary games just jump or swear, but both subnautica and grounded have had me screaming in my chair like I just got shot
For me Grounded and Subnautica are quite different, but they've the 2 best maps in the survival genre imo. I'm tired of generally always seeing the same kind of map in survival games, which are often based on a biome of forest and grassland, or snow, or desert, and seeing games like SN or Grounded offer something original and much more interesting in terms of exploration, it's really appreciable
@nawack2774 Oh, they're definitely not exactly alike, no argument there. But I think that fear of the unknown, a good story, intriguing lore, and rewards for exploring are all things both games have in common. Very different gameplay in terms of Grounded being more combat-based, for sure.
I've used being married as a subnautica alternative, *but* after 14 years in, I can say with high confidence: don't get married unless you want to get over your fear of death, because after 14 years of marriage, I no longer fear death, but welcome it.* _______________________________________ * The above is satire and at the same time absolutely true.
You don't have me convinced that Influxis is actually not a cheap Subnautica ripoff, because that is exactly what it looks like. They barely even made an effort to re-skin the environment or gear or gameplay.
I thought so too. Then I played it for approx 2h. At first glance it really looks like it, but the more i played it the more i liked it TBH. Its nowhere near as good but still scratches that itch
@@SurvivalJoe But for now, It's still in development. I think when it is fully released, It will maybe be as good as Subnautica. But we just have to wait.
Oh this is exactly the kind of video i was looking for. Been wondering what I could learn from for my own Subnautica like and here you've done an entire grading system with that in mind. Incredible. I hadn't heard about Planet Crafter, that looks like a ton of fun.
To me the game that most examplifies the game style of Subnautica is Starsand. It IS Subnautica bar two features, there is limited unavoidable combat and it is set in a desert. All other elements, exploring the unknown, finding 'blueprints', tool building, strange creatures, environmental storytelling, non essential basebuilding and environment survival is there.
8 out of 9 of these games are either in my game library, or on my wishlist. I didn't know about Infulxis, it is now in my library :) Thank you for this list!
I thoight the look of Under the Waves was a lot like Subanutica. The internet in general seems to believe that Outer Wilds is the game most like Subnautica.
Influxus is the only one in the list that may have some of the primary elements that might satisfy some aquatic survival Players. It's all about thalassophobia, megalophobia and mechanophobia.
Just out of curiosity, did you play TLD story or the sandbox ?. I am a little struggling with sandbox, so not sure if story would benefit me ? What do you think
I know I'm super late on comments but one game you completely forgot about is falling skies. It's a great subnautica survival game taking place in the ocean. I could be wrong but I think it was made before subnautica. Sadly it was discontinued 3 years after it's launch. I don't think it's finished but it's got a lot of content and very fun repetitive gameplay experience
Watch for my aquatic survival game, 'Blue Terra,' that is currently in preproduction. We have a powerful art team and an original story and world. It isn't a Subnautica knock off.
Breathe Edge really does feel like subnautica early on.. but starts to feel really hollow in comparison about midway through. I really hope Breathedge 2 lean more into the subnautica vibe (Base building and vehicles) and away from the (mostly) linear progression and weird gunplay.. I get there going to keep the poorly translated dad jokes, that's kind of their schtick lol
As someone who owns and has played a fair bit of Sunkenland, I'd say it's resemblance to Subnautica is *maybe* a 2. It's first and foremost a shooter. Resource farming is raiding bases and killing the NPC humans, with the most coveted loot being guns, ammo, armor and meds. Most base building is making a fortress to fight off the nightly raids (often commandos with machineguns) and then farming resources to repair the damage before the next raid. The undersea stuff is lovely, but largely irrelevant except in the very early game. Later game resources require the shooter stuff. It's not a bad game, but IMO doesn't scratch the subnautica itch.
Thx for the useful insight as comments from players that play more are always more relevant. TBH I played it first 10h approx, so that is where i got the opinion.
Planet Crafter looks like it could be a good game however i have some serious doubts about how long it would take to complete. Neebs gaming did a sponsorship for the game not to long ago and after doing some basic early game building they showed off a world one of there editor hade made where from the look of things she hade reached the endgame of the tech tree. They never mentioned how long time it toke her to build it but assuming she started to play as they got the offer it wasent more then a few days. There are games where u can quickly get through a build tech tree but those games often has a story or enemy creatures to try and slow u down but that dosent seem to exist in this game and becouse of how u unlock the tech tree everything in the game just revolved around mass crafting to speedrun that tech tree. The foundation of the game looked good but if they dont add anything more then just building i dont se this game going anywhere.
You either missed the point of why Subnautica is so great either you don't get it. Thalasophobia is what makes subnautica great, and the feeling of beeing stranded in an Alien ocean where you have no idea what creatures are in it, how deep it is, how dangerous it is and how massive it is and NOT having any true weapons, except that bloody stasis gun that contradicts the whole game philosophy and breaks the game at some point). Running arround like a headless chicken to build a base is NOT what makes Subnautica great. Is the lack of visibility in the ocean, the constant danger of dying from something, the plunge in to Abyss feel. None of these is even close to that and they completly miss the point.
I suggest that you check out my comparison video between Pacific Drive and Subnautica 😎. I agree with you but that was not the point of this video. Let me know what you think on that one 😉. Thx for comment
If someone finds other aspects of a game better or more interesting than others, nobody, absolutely nobody has the right to say they understand it less or missed the point. The point of a game is to have fun, OBVIOUSLY. You obviously missed the point of the video. I think it's pretty freaking clear what was appealing about the game to this guy. If you disagree, either say nothing and move on, or say you disagree. Don't whine that others have a different experience than you. How hard would it have been to say "I just miss the scary ocean feeling?" The answer is not at all, you just wanted to be negative for essentially no reason.
You literally point out how the game contradicts what YOU think it's main appeal is. What sense does that make? You can't even argue that it was the developers biggest priority or attention if you're gonna backpedal and complain about things they DID do. You LITERALLY basically just said "you don't understand what makes the game great, and moreover neither do the games own developers, only I know what's right for the franchise and what makes it good" completely forgetting that it's what makes it good TO YOU. Literally try thinking about ANYONE else for once, and maybe try applying it to other aspects of your life bc this behavior is telling of the type of people yall usually are. If you have such great ideas, spend more brain power and energy making them into a reality and actually doing something productive with them instead of complaining about other people just having a good time in a slightly different manner than you. It's childish.
So everyone that upvoted subnautica on steam has thalasaphobia, according to your opinion? Logic fail dude. Good story, excellent scary alien environment. Great tools great upgrades. This list goes on....
Great vid. Subbed!! I've found that nothing even comes close to the first subnautica game! I played it completely blind in 2020 and it was the most fun I've had in years, took me about 145 hrs to bumble through the story :) I wanted to like Below Zero but it was just ruined by the woke activist devs on their team that had to shoehorn in their political views on LGBTQ stuff. . Too bad. No Man's Sky and The Forest, as well as Pacific Drive are the only games that have scratched that itch for me. I highly recommend all three!!
i get that it's relatively impossible to replicate even similarly to what someone could competently build with provided materials and such. it just bothers me that the more "futuristic" any crafting is the less immersive the game is. Out of all the different LEGO games, for example, there's yet to be a survival style LEGO game.
I understand the sentiment, however If i would only cover 1.0 releases, I would be out of views, as by the time I publish something 999,000 other youtubers have beat me to it :-)

You didnt mute the IGN commentary during Breathedge. So there was a weird dual audio overlap. Or during the Pacific Drive segment.
Oops, didnt catch it. Sorry
Sunkenland is an asset flip that doesn't trigger thalassophobia and doesn't even have professional level art design.

Planet Crafter player here. Its great and all But when i found out about Subnautica I wanted that More
Good list! I highly suggest you to have a look at Blind Descent, Abzu and Green Hell.
