Bad metal noise when driving? Hopefully it’s just your dust shield.

  • After having replaced a CV axle on my R53 Mini Cooper, I heard a nasty grinding metal noise during the test drive. I realized later I must have beat the dust shield when removing a ball joint to get at the axle. It sounded awful like maybe I had not seated the CV or the brake caliper was stuck - if I had thought about it for a minute I would have recognized the sound as a rubbing dust shield. It didn’t occur to me that I may have bent it at all. Well, there you go. Maybe you’ll hear that noise sometime and not need to worry (or it’s a bad wheel bearing lol).

Same sound i have - thank you I’ve been searching everywhere. Everyone says it’s wheel bearings but it’s very different from that. Almost like there’s a piece of metal scraping on the ground.

Thanks. The the noise was so annoying. I tried doing it with the tire on, but needed to take it off to see the contact point. Finally I can drive without everyone looking as I drive past. lol

Exactly what my car is doing after having front brakes replaced and rotors resurfaced. Taking it back to the shop this morning so they can fix it.

Thank you for the assistance. I did just have my brakes and rotors done by a shop and I do hear this noise. They told me there would be a noise because the brakes were new, but I've driven them a little while now and I still hear it. I think this is the issue.

Thanks... You'll crack on me but I really wanted it. I bought a CLA 250 recently w/the AMG package, well... drove it about 1000miles after 3 months and a few days ago I heard this sound from the driver side... I parked and inspected visually w/hands and determined it was the brake dust shield as I could move it around, as well as scraping. Worst part is, it is part of the wheel hub assembly, I don't even know if this is covered under warranty but it does state it covers any lubricated parts and if they take it apart the bearing has to be removed and lubricated and if not looks like I got to do it myself, fug. Ahhhhh the choices we make. Thanks for the video.

As an update, wasn't too bad. Chucked the back wheels and jacked her up using the pad beneath. Took the wheel off, the caliper which was zip tied off dangling and the rotor (which has a security key!) and was able to break the dust shield off easily - I think the recent salt we got finished it off. It's a very thin piece of steel so it doesn't take long for it to wear down tbh, imo less than 10 years and they're cooked for certain in a mildly cold climate.
Regardless, it was all assembled back in reverse without issue. The caveat is that when I replace the caliper/pads/rotor I'll also do the wheel bearing and put a new shield on too (in a month or so). Took like 30 minutes tops.

Oh thank you so much for showing the noise! That's EXACTLY what my front left sounds like occasionally after replacing the rotors and pads myself. 90% sure this is the problem, now I just need to find a jack.

If the "bird like chirping" noise is coming from your back rotors, then it is your handbrake shoes that need adjusting.

I get a lot of this noise whenever I brake. It is confusing me because it is coupled with a rattle when I turn the steering wheel at low speed

Thanks, they were re graveling the roads and I guess a tiny stone got stuck in between. Pried it barely with a screw driver and it popped out. Problem solved

If you don't bend the dust shield early on, it might turn into a series of severe thunking noises, make you wonder if you have a flat (or that something serious is caught in the wheel), and then fall off. Just ask my dust shield. Location unknown.

im having this weird popping noise, sounds like a shot absorber, sounds like a bad strut top mount..
sounds like a bad lower arm with bad ball joint.
    but everything checks out okay.
this popping crackle sound occurs when i drive the first hour from cold start.
and im seeing this shield getting real close to the bottom circle of the rotor but i dont have that metal sliding noise.

      yes

    • @NoOdL3z18
      @NoOdL3z18 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Yes, might be difficult with a screwdriver to get under the lip and bend it away from the rotor, but not impossible. If you have something like a dental pick it or maybe a long thin allen wrench would make it a bit easier.
