When buying an Audi B5S4, it is essential to know a couple of key factors and tests before going in for that big buy. The Twin Turbo Audi is truly a fun car to own, make sure to look out for these key issues that some S4's have!

Nice video, one thing I think is worth mentioning is how those seals end up blowing in the motor in the first place. Often it is due to a stuck/clogged pcv valve and/or a failed check valve allowing boost into the crank case. I see a lot of people new to turbo cars have leaky seals and replace them without thinking of them as a symptom of an underlying problem.
Great video. Definitely recommend anyone looking into a B5 S4 for the first time to check the F hose that connects the pcv system. They always tear.
I'm pretty sure those were fazed out in the 2001.5 models as well, the whole spider hose assembly was changed.

Video was spot on!! Great video. One thing I’ve learned over the years of owning Audis is never cheap out on parts. Buy quality parts from quality sources! Yes you’ll pay a lot more but it will be 100% worth it in the long run. Keep the videos coming!
Just recently got an Audi A4 B5
1. It has an oil leak (maybe cam seals, because I smell oil in the cabin)
2. The front right CV axle is making the clicking sound and are torn

Good job -b It doesn't matter if it's valve covers or camshaft seals, you almost every time smell oil. In my case it was camshaft. Little bit pain in the ass but very cheap fix overall.
Don't forget about the rear main seal .. they generally are slow leaks, but you don't want it to get worst and let go all at once.
My car came with ALL of the leaks - valve covers, cam seals, AND rear main.
What I don't understand is listing normal maintenance wear items. Most people are going to buy something that has over 80K on it in which you are going to eventually encounter worn cv joints, oil seeping, replace struts, ball joints. Why tell someone to watch for those things when replacing these items can be really gratifying. Personally being a car guy, I am looking for critical things like engine, transmission health. I am not a troll, just saying, if you want a new car, buy one.

Agreed, even newer vehicle will need these basic things.
This is a pretty good guide for buying a VW with the 1.8t in general
Dont forget checking the 1-2 shift collar in the trans. Make sure to do a hard 1-2 shift on the test drive to see if it grinds or wont go in to gear. Also listen for wheel bearings starting to go. Cheap part but they can be labor intensive to change
100% agree with you, I bought a what seemed imaculate imola avant, k04 swap, rs4 dps , exhaust, kw coilovers, everything in good condition etc... I test drove it (but didnt go hard on her switching gears) just pulled a bit in in the hige rgearsand all seamed well... well I drive it home all happy and shit, do a couple hard pulls and i notice im grinding 1-2 and grinding downw shifting 3-2 .... well guess what, im in for a 12-shiftcollar/synchros job... that should be cheap.. NOT!!!... its like 3-5k here in switzerland... anyways, I havent got the job done yet, yes 6 month have gone by and i still drive the car but make sure to be easy 1-2 and am looking forward to a rebuild this winter
And please if you do the wheel bearings buy a good quality ones I own a b5 a4 2.8 avant (that was the closest I could get to b5 s4 avant ) I did replace them with EBay bargain bearings all 4 and I end up replacing them all 4 again after a month
Reference to wheel bearings, ALWAYS buy the manufacturer's bearings! I've had GM, Toyota, etc and went to the parts store. I was ALWAYS replacing them 6 to 12 months later! Do a search and find genuine OEM bearings for the best price!!
lol mine has both issues. Rear wheel bearings are gone and 2nd gear synchro is completely gone.

so i think i found the right b5 s4 for me as a first car(i can afford the repairs, i have a job). It has 150k miles tho, the turbos sounded smooth, no weird or bad noises like you said, and no oil smell, but the car has no maintenance papers, but has a clean title and no accidents, whats your opinion on this b5?
You really got to watch out for the muffler turbine drive chain. The transmission has a pto shaft that actually goes in to the front muffler housing on these cars driving a chain driven turbine that forces and pressurizes the exhaust out of the car. This really makes the engine breathe as it creates a vacuum. That is how the B4 sounds so whippy. This complex system can cost a couple grand bub,

I always wanted an 01 S4 B5 not for the power or the twin turbos but for the handling potential.
Ahh, unfortunately, my whole engine died (216E KM in it). The cylinder head has malfunctioned and is not functioning as it is supposed to... Also, the engine block is not OK, the cylinder walls are in really bad condition. The cooling water disappeared completely after 100Km usually.
So I had to buy an engine, and this time I bought a 2004 Audi A6 Allroad engine, with everything (ARE engine code). Of course, it's used... :) Currently we replacing in this engine a lot of things, timing belt etc... But the left turbo was not in a great shape on this engine as well, so we decided to buy a Chinese K04 turbo house and OEM central body... I really had to go with the Chinese, because the OEM was really really expensive after all this happened... I really hope that I bought a good Chinese turbo house...
So its also important to check the coolant water level before and after a test drive, because we came to that time where the 2.7 engine's head cylinders are starting to fail. Mine 2.7 engine was the third with this problem at my 2.7 Biturbo specialist mechanic, in this year. Before that, no one had this problem.
While I don’t have an S4 I do have an 02 A4, 3.0 Quattro. I’m restoring it to near stock from a young previous owner’s attempt at modifications. So she’s a labor of love. I was lucky because looking at the car up on a rack. No leaks anywhere! Good CV boots, tight suspension, tight shocks, etc. It only has 143K miles. By the way, I love your channel.
first thing to do when buying an S4, remove all the green check valves and evap system.. reroute everything.. i call it "bullet proofing the b5
Does this actually make a big difference
Number one reason why you DON'T want to buy any vehicle that has serious oil leak issues is due to the engine possibly running low on oil at times which can completely fuck up the rod and crank bearings, destroy the cylinder heads, burn out turbos and stretch timing chains.
The b5 is a classic design still looks modern this day.

There’s one around here going for 3.5k with 160k miles but most are highway, worth it or nah?

to be honest you missed some bigger problem on the b5 one major on is rust under the windshield as water sit there for some time and makes a hole into the cabin big problem also keep in mind if you want a b5 s4 make sure you have money to spend as this car are getting close to 20 years old or if don't have the cash buy a civic as ko4 turbos cost the same price as b5 s4 lmfao
and never buy a ko3 chipped car as the motor is to big for the b5 as it barely fits so it get really hot under there and kills turbo.
and the best part is if you paying to pull the turbo on a b5 it about 22 hours in labor.so you need the cash to play with b5 s4
money pits lol but i love my stage 3 in the end so it with the money in the end

im searching for a s4 and im worried most about turbo health and the wastegates and of course compression, all the seals and belts are easy as a 2.8 owner wont be much different.
edit, the usual b5 issues arent really a problem either control arms axles wheel bearings arent really an issue

Owned a few, turbo oil leaks are common. Do NOT buy the TurdTronic auto.
And you went wrong. If you say you should not buy audi s4 if it leaks oil that just stupid. 99% just change valve cover. It's like one hour job and costs you like 30 euros. Just be sure where it is leaking. And if that is too much for you you shouldn't ever buy s4 b5 2.7 biturbo. There is something always you need to fix. Nothing major, biggest thing is the turbos. So if you wan't buy s4 b5 buy one with new turbos or be ready to remove engine and puttings k04 and new map etc etc. And then the fun begins :D

im finishing up my b5 s4 and man im making sure to take before and after pictures on everything i replaced, i would say a very important thing to check for on b5 s4 2.7TT are Cam Chain tensioner, ive read on forums those will start to go out, you gotta take your valve cover off and see if there chain marks on top of your valve cover. this one probably one of the most expensive repairs besides turbos
KS_SQUID it has a belt not a chain.chain is on the 8 cylinder.
there is a chain that spins the exhaust and intake cams together, and i meant cam chain tensioner my bad, those are what go bad on the 2.7tt
