    For headphone watchers, one section of the video is left ear only for audio. This was my last video with this horrible wireless microphone setup. I smashed it with a hammer afterwards.

    4:44 That little kick is not the transmission, that's your motor mounts. All of the GMT900 platform SUV's with the 5.3L V8 and 6.2L V8 seem to get this issue after 70-100,000 miles or so depending on how hard its life has been. Open the hood, put her in Drive, step on the brake and give it some gas. You'll see that engine block try to hop out of there.

      I had a '10 Tahoe Z71 for a few years and ended up replacing the driver side motor mount, parents had an '08 Escalade had to do the same thing. Great trucks if you abuse them, even better if you take care of them.

      For whatever reason this seems to be somewhat common for all GM RWD/4WD platforms. Even later model S10s with the 4 cylinder would smoke engine mounts. Hilariously, the S10 mounts are enormous (about the size of a regular sized jar of mayo or peanut butter) and that little anemic motor eats them up anyhow.

      Oh that's completely normal, it's just the LS trying to escape so it can be put in something that isn't a piece of shit.

    One thing to note the 08-09 Denali did NOT have AFM aka cylinder deactivation. The 07 had the hardware but it was not activated, however the 08-09 didn’t have the hardware at all. It wasn’t until 2010 when they started using the AFM (cylinder deactivation) so find one before 2010 and you’re good. I have an 08 Denali with 227k miles on it and it’s running strong with no signs of giving up.

      Really glad you covered this man, I've been looking at maybe purchasing a Denali from before 2010 and was a little skeptical when he mentioned the whole cylinder deactivation being an issue.

    I have a 2009 Yukon slt 5.3. It has 212,000 miles on it. Had since new and have never done anything to it but change the oil. If you want a reliable vehicle this is it

    • @Alviniscute
      @Alviniscute 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      that's insane! how often did you change oil?

    • @mp-wf9ek
      @mp-wf9ek 7 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      So the only service you've done to your vehicle you've owned since brand new were oil changes? Meaning you never changed any other fluids (transmission, power steering, brake fluid, differential, or transfer case)? I don't mean to jinx you but that sounds like you should be prepared for a potential huge failure in the future that'll make you file for bankruptcy lol. But seriously, it's a huge risk to not do any other maintenance other than oil changes. Sure it's the main and most important but a car is more than just its engine!

      @David-rv1fb 7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Gage Spanny yeah but a Toyota Tundra can last over 1 million miles there fore of since the Seqouia has the exact same engine it can at least get a good 750k miles on it. Therefore meaning that the Seqouia is the better family hauler both durable and reliable.

    • @gagespanny3166
      @gagespanny3166 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Isaac Arias yeah, but there are also silverado's with over a million miles so therefore the Tahoe and Yukon can also hit 1 million miles because they share the same engine. Any vehicle can hit a million miles it depends on where you live and how well you maintain it.

    Great vehicle with the usual complaints- Worn buttons on the AC, flaking paint on the inside of door handles, engine mount, annoying rattling locks(which I fixed with soft velcro), had to replace oil pressure sensor, high pitch whining through the speakers. Love the truck though

    If you can find a NEW Denali for 65k your're getting a smoking deal on one. I do window tinting for a local GMC dealer here in OKC and they move more Denali Yukons than anyone around. The usual msrp on them is anywhere from 79-82k depending on options. Also from someone who is in and out of over 70 new GM truck platforms a month (driving to and from the dealer) the initial transmission slop you're talking about is experienced from day one. They feel like they are waiting to engage and then kick really hard.

  • @97I30T

    My boss had the cylinder deactivation issue on his 2007 suburban at only 66,000 miles. It relieved his wallet of over $3,000.
    Also, you forgot to mention almost every single one of these GM full size SUVs of this era have cracked dashboards and peeling door handles.

      @daveh2612 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      wolverine350r if it is in fact a recall, which I think it is, it doesn't matter if you're the 15th owner or how old the truck is, it's a safety issue that they are required to fix

    Honorable mentions: the heater hose that sends coolant to the engine! (this happen on my 07 Tahoe and 08 escalade) The cracking dashboards! The leaking engine oil!! Motor on the power running boards! over all good trucks.

  • @tonyr2360
    @tonyr2360 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    One issue you failed to mention is the rampant problem with the dash board cracking on the driver's side and passenger side. Both sides crack at both ends of the air vent on a 45 degree angle. My 2011 Avalanche LTZ has been garage kept and babied since the day I bought it and I still managed to get these cracks. I looked online and there are TONS of people out there with the same issue. There are even TH-cam videos out there showing them.

    My college graduation present in 2010 was an ‘09 Denali. I kept it until 2016. As soon as it hit 100k mi on Christmas Eve 2014 it fell apart- within 3 months, fuel sending unit went out, oil pan started leaking, airbag sensor went out, both front wheel bearings, cruise control went out and none of the recommended fixes worked. Within the next year, master fuse burned out and made every light on the dash come on at 2 in the morning, alternator went out, wire to the starter burned up and it had periodically had electrical issues for the 6 months before I sold it, both front exterior door handles broke, and on the inside before it hit 100k the leather on the center console cracked one winter and the “chrome” on the interior handles peeled and was very sharp. I kept it until 130k because the infotainment system started getting dead pixels and for some reason flipped upside down and kept defaulting to 12 AM. It was just too expensive for someone fresh out of grad school and getting started. I loved it though and I never damaged it, so the White Diamond paint did really well. I took it all over the US and it was very comfortable to ride in. I miss it sometimes, but definitely not the year and a half full of repair bills.

After the lifters are replaced, it will be bullet proof. The 6.2 in the McKinley responds well to performance modifications, and a good tune. It makes a really good family sled. '07 Denalis and Escalades had major electrical issues with the AWD system/stabilitrak wiring connectors, my dad's 07 Escalade would completely quit on the highway and needed a tow-in probably 4 or 5 times in 3 years, his coworker had an Avalanche with the same issues.

She has pulled horse trailers graded the arena hauled brick, tree trimming and pulled out cacti from the ground. I think it has around 190k or 210k miles. Of course being a 16 year old workhorse she's needed stuff replaced but its a great truck. Been trying to buy it from my parents for years! Haha

      Priuses are for douchebags. Some people just like full size SUVs due to their capacities they offer. Priuses are supposedly meant for saving the environment, but the battery making process and material used to make their batteries are actually worse for the environment than a Land Rover Discovery. So just stick with a full size SUV and don’t get a Prius.

    Not sure if someone else here has noted this but these SUV's are notorious for cracked dashboards, peeling interior door handles and exterior door handles that literally break off in your hand. The engines and transmissions are very solid in my experience but the older GMT800s have aged better all around and still command a decent price on the market.

Everyone I know in SE Texas that owns a Tahoe Or Burban has a cracked dash. It is bad enough that GM has offered to replace some models for as little as $300. But no recall. Also everyone I have known with the air ride has had the compressor go out, including myself. And he price to repair is crazy.

      Maybe but the avalanche tends to be cheaper than a silverado. I got mine for 14 grand and the dealer wanted a similar silverado for 3 grand more, 17k. The Avalanche also is nice because it rides smoother , has a better turning radius, and the bed is connected to the cabin so you can fold down the rear seats and have a full size 8 foot bed. And you could drive cross the the Netherlands in a few hours. You'd have to travel a few hours outside of one two of the largest US cities just to find a homes for €200,000 (~$235,000). If you wanted to cross the US, it would take you another 45 hours of nonstop driving or most of week realistically. There are some parts of the US that are so remote and so desolate, it would take a day just to find large populations.

    inherited a 2007 Suburban 1500, which has all the following problems:
    infamous cracking dashboard plus snapping rear bucket seat armrests
    broken exterior door handles - front ones replaced under warranty, back ones replaced with aftermarket chromed metal handles (@$300/pair, not including installation)
    razor-sharp peeling chrome interior door handles - thanks for the recall info, will check to see if mine qualifies
    with the horrendous highway oil consumption I also paid a few hundred bucks for a chip programmer to deactivate Displacement on Demand (DOD) aka Active Fuel Management
    according to the TSB you're also supposed to replace one of the valve covers with a new design (at your own expense) but since I drive it under 2000 miles/year I haven't done that yet

    I have the DexCool issue with a newer Mopar I just bought. "But how" you may ask yourself? Because Mopar uses orange and now pink coolant in their engines, people think "Oh, it's Dexcool!" and add that when topping off. The water pump on this car leaked, and the PO topped off with DexCool, which also didn't get along well with the Mopar coolant. Now I'm dealing with a sludged-up coolant system. And that can actually happen with other makes and models - So checking the coolant is actually good advice to buyers of ANY car!

    for whatever reason- my 2009 Denali's 6.2 started knocking at 185k miles. cylinder 6 had a valve seat drop out, valve met piston and smashed the valve back into the head. truck was always well maintained, mobil1 synthetic every 5k miles.
    replaced piston and cylinder head
    fast forward 20k miles, at 205k, cylinder 5 (directly across from cylinder 6 iirc) did the same exact thing. valve seat dropped. new piston and new head
    not sure if it was a freak deal, maybe two faulty cylinder heads from the factory, because it seems like not many other people have had valve seats fail on the 6.2

      _ALL_ aluminum head engines will do this occasionally with some engines being much more prone to it than others. The steel valve seat expands and contracts at a different rate than aluminum head so over time they work loose and drop out. The likelihood of that happening increases dramatically if the engine has ever been overheated. 2.0L Ford I4 motors were so famous for it that even getting them a little warm once was pretty much a written guarantee that it was going to drop a valve seat. LS motors aren't really known for having severe problems, but it does happen.

      Seems like a freak thing - the 6.0 and 6.2 engines are absolute beasts that run forever normally.

    I love the Denali. I drove a Lincoln Navigator for 2 years, it was extremely fast & comfortable but when the gas price went up to $5 per gallon, it was time for it to go! The gas mileage is really bad.

    most of this stuff also applies to the 2007-2013 Silverado and Sierra, since the chassis, electrical and Driveline components are damn near identical.

      Chad Slavin the Avalanche and Escalade EXT even more so, because everything from the B-pillar forward IS identical to the Tahoe and Escalade.

    My 2002 Chevy Trailblazer does/has that "sloppy" transmission kick thing from time to time. Other times when I ease into acceleration it doesn't happen. It still runs great and starts up quick. I baby it since it has 196,880 miles on her. How could I get that checked out? Or what should I tell my mechanic if I want them to check it out? Glad you got your Mercedes truck back, dude! God bless!

    Good old Dexkill... Checking the reservoir isn't enough as it's super common for used dealers to flush the purge tank and top it off with fresh coolant. You've got to pop the radiator cap and have a good look inside and if the vehicle doesn't have a cap on the radiator itself you need to pop the upper hose and inspect it that way.
    I know... It sounds like a complete pain for a vehicle you haven't bought yet, but it beats the alternative by a long shot. You don't want to be replacing a heater core in modern vehicle any time soon, or in the case of all of the V6 GM products (that I'm aware of anyhow), an intake manifold and gasket. I flat out won't buy GM products with a wet intake anymore.

    Gear ratios can be 3:08 in Tahoe, Suburban. These gears suck big time for towing, check glove box for build codes. Not all of the 5.3 liters had AFM. You can find some without.

    Another thing that I would look out for is cracks in the dashboard Plastics. I've got a 2008 Avalanche and after a little bit the dashboard cracked in two places and started rattling non-stop so I had to use black silicone to make it stop. It sounds like something so small but after 25,000 miles of hearing that Non-Stop, it gets pretty irritating. And one other thing I'd look out for after you buy one of these vehicles with a 5.3 L Vortec is that because of the cylinder deactivation they burn oil like crazy. If you don't maintain your vehicle well enough you will burn up all your oil before you know it, I almost did.
