One tip for you as i never saw you doing it (might be on purpose?). When you're placing down a trench, hold ALT after the 1st click + scroll your MMB up or down. This way you can change the shape of the trench ;-)
Ah yeah, my mistake for not putting that in, must have slipped my mind :( Make a line of hedgehogs normally, then make another line inside that line.There should be just enough room between the hedgehogs to fit a 3 hedgehog, thereby blocking the gap completely. This can be kind of finicky though, so it might take you a couple of tries to get right.
