  • On 30th September 2024, I was excommunicated from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The reasoning for this decision is as confusing as it is vague.

If you look at the church, from the beginning it was as per a good play, 'Religion mixed with the knowledge of Man.'
The concept of a heavenly father unfortunately then gets attached to this concept as well.
This is what the church leadership has attached to their teachings.

Your story sounds somewhat similar to mine.
Living in Central TX. Converted as a youth then left over 2 decades ago.
I've listened to many of Nemo's discussions here and listened to his comments as a guest on Dr Dehlin's channel.
I've enjoyed his highly inquisitive, dry humor and nonconfrontational style. He simply wanted people still active in this church to discuss their hidden history and controversial decisions in recent times without going on the attack. In the end he was condemned and permanently dismissed from his membership for trying to be a space for open dialog. 😢💔
The actions of the LDS Church weren't surprising yet they were deeply hurtful.
In retrospect it confirmed how little the culture of the church administration at the highest levels had changed.
Leaving was definitely the right decision for me!

Don't leave the church. Its a Beautiful way of life. I know from living in a family from H.e.1.1. and that is an understatement.
The Church is TRUE. However, Church is a covenant from Christ. The MEN are Human and NOT perfect.
Divide and Conquer or loose your testimony which won't be wonderful on the Judgement day.
I am not tickled pink with the leaders. I did receive a testimony which I didn't understand for over 6 months. Then, BANG, a BRILLIANT revelation.

When president hinkley told members tithing wasn’t being used and wouldn’t be used for the City Creek project that was worded with intentional deception. The SEC filing found that the church used shell companies to intentionally deceive about the use of funds. When the church told members to testify about how tall steeples are an important part of our worship that was intended to deceive the city council in Texas. @charlesmendeley9823 - Considering that Amazon didn't exist during the Old and New Testament times, one shouldn't expect it would be mentioned in the Bible. But what IS mentioned in the Bible is Christ's parable of the talents, where the Master asks his servants to invest wisely to increase their portion and principle. Nowadays, successful investments like a shopping mall generate income and interest which can be re-invested in items that directly pertain to the work of Church, such as buiding places of worship like Temples, and providing vast global humanitarian support. What IS mentioned in the Bible is the account of Joseph in Eqypt storing up large supplies in time of plenty to be prepared for times of famine. When lean times came, Egypt had enough for Egypt AND to share with neighboring countries. Nowadays huge warehouses can help store up the plenty. At least one of the former Amazon warehouses has many shipping and loading bays, large enough for a semi truck to back into each bay. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints maintains a huge fleet of semi trucks to be filled to the brim with food and supplies to serve communities in need across the United States, or are ready to drive to an airport or shipping dock to send to communities in need around the world. Someday you might even receive some of that food and those supplies yourself if you face a natural disaster or some other catastrophe.

Joseph reflects anti-Masonic sentiment in the "secret combinations" described in the Book of Mormon, which also pinpoints the writing date after the William Morgan affair (1826). Moreover, it strongly influenced temple ceremony because many men in the Nauvoo period were Masons. The tide changed in salt lake City, because Brigham Young assumed Joseph Smith had been killed by Masons, stirring an enmity between the two groups. These councils were handled at the ward level since accused members were not endowed and had not served missions. I was taking notes for the bishop on what sexual details/encounter the accused member was involved in. They would ask things like how many times they had sex (fornication) or cheated on their wife. I was told the handbook said no church court could be held until the criminal was in prison! Then only for a federal crime and if the stake presidency was willing. No official notice of the results was required to be given to those affected by the crime. I was however, informed by a counselor in the stake presidency who also presented the impact of the crime on my family.

I did my own research, reading only church approved books, and came to the conclusion that the church wasn't true back in the 90s. This was before the removal of the 'death oath' in the temple or the DNA evidence of no Jewish ancestry in native Americans. The books I read were, King James version of the Bible, The Book of Mormon, the Pearl of Great Price, The Doctrine and Covenants, The History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, A Marvelous Work and a Wonder abd Volume One of the Journal of Discourses. Additionally I read Joseph Smith's notebook on the translation of the Pearl of Great Price where the same hieroglyph had two different interpretations on two different pages that I noticed. Also the Missouri state archives on the Mormon wars where Brigham Young was hired by Joseph Smith to run the Missourians off their land even after the Mormons were given land by the Missourians. And of course the Mountain Meadows Massacre where some of the victims were also victims of the Missouri Mormon war. My bishop, who worked at the same corporation, stopped by my office and was talking about how my home teachers didn't like coming to my house. He proceeded to tell me that if I no longer wanted to be a member I could submit a letter of resignation. I asked him who I should address and what I should say in the letter. After which I printed it out and handed it to him. He wouldn't accept it and told me I had to mail it to Salt Lake, which I did. A few weeks later I received a rather cordial letter from the church authorities stating that i had been removed from the church records but was always welcome to rejoin if I saw fit. This is much better treatment than Oliver Cowdery who submitted his letter of resignation but to this day the church states that he was excommunicated even though he moved to Salt Lake after the death of Joseph Smith and rejoined the church. Can you guess why Oliver Cowdery resigned from the church? Can you say Fanny Alger? You're in good company Nemo.

NeverMormon here. I need help to understand Nemo's obvious pain. I feel his pain with him, but I don't think it is based on being unheard and mistreated. He knew that would be the result. Is the LDS Church not the product of a charlatan prophet and all sorts of peculiar doctrines which don't interface with reality as modern people know it? Also a leadership that is not trustworthy beyond any group of males with similar unaccountable power? After Nemo has subtracted what is false and wrong about the Church, what is left that causes him this pain? (I have ideas, but I would only be guessing wildly.)Thank you for your input.

What weakens the faith of members is when the leaders don't have enough faith in God to take care of the church that they believe they have to sweep things under the rug or keep people from asking questions. If it's God's church trust him to preserve it in the face of scrutiny.

Sympathies and congratulations Nemo! Yours is a bittersweet victory in my view, one where spirit rules over dogma and viscousness hiding behind a self righteous mask. So, well done you. What I really want to know is exactly who ordered the Stake President to excommunicate you, and better still who ordered them. You deserve to know the lineage of the clear demand to get you out. I have my suspicions but they are only speculative, and will remain so since the Church operates in secret and deeply fears honest, open communication. You have my admiration.
