Hello! Brazilian here. Let me translate what’s happening at the moment:
Basically Natália Becker could face popular jury. The prosecution is collecting more information about the case and statements. She is not allowed to leave São Paulo without an authorization and she can’t perform any further procedures.
Marcelo Camargo, the victim’s boyfriend, said this: “He (Henrique) squeeze my arm, widened his eyes, stoped breathing and passed out. Then, Nathália and her assistants entered the room and she was very nervous, without knowing what to do. She wasn’t prepared at all to deal with that situation. Her husband simply asked me to removed my car from the parking space so the ambulance could arrive. After I did that, I couldn’t find Nathália anywhere. She was gone, as so the phenol’s ampole”
Very sad case. I hope our justice can do more than just punish her. We need to have more strict law to prevent theses things from happening

Also lidocaine can also cause heart issues by itself in high doses. It’s made from coca leaves. Fun fact: Coca-Cola is allowed by the US government to import coca leaves to produce the coca extract to use in Coca-Cola. In return the government uses the rest of the leaves for pharmaceutical purposes like making the different caines like lidocaine and marcaine (a longer acting form used in small doses for trigger point injections)
People have died from putting prescription lidocaine cream that would be ok only on the eyebrows all over their legs to make waxing less painful. Young, healthy women died from cardiac arrest.
You can get sunburn or burn lotion or spray containing very small doses of lidocaine, but the amount is super low so it would be very difficult to use too much.

Hi, I’m a biomedical scientist and licensed aesthetician from Brazil and I would like to provide further information about this case.
In Brazil, high concentration full face phenol peels are required to be performed by dermatologists in surgical centers because in this specific case you have to monitor the patient’s vital signs. However, other professionals are authorized to perform this peel in clinics, such as biomedical scientist like myself, pharmacists, biologists, nurses, dentist, as long as they are specialized in Aesthetics, just not at the same concentration, not all at once. As a biomedical scientist, I studied for 4 years in the university plus 1 year to become a specialist in aesthetics.
Phenol peels also have a lot of contraindications, such as smoking, heart diseases, immunological problems and other systemic diseases.
The main problem with Henrique’s case was that Nathalia Becker was NOT qualified to perform this procedure. She is not any of the professionals I mentioned above. She does not have any university degree. She is just an influencer who took a 6 hour online course. And because she was not qualified at all, she didn’t know that the absorption of the phenol peel is pretty high on its own. And what she proceeded to do before applying the peel was to cut Henrique’s skin with a dermographer (an equipment with needles typically used in permanent makeup). In the photo at 5:32 you can actually see the cuts that were made. You do not create any sort of pathway for any kind of peel because they are designed to penetrate the skin slowly. That caused the phenol to go to the circulatory system and unfortunately he passed from a cardiorespiratory arrest.
Phenol is still currently banned in Brazil, even for M.D.s.

Yeah, that’s what I was thinking like I feel like it’s an OK procedure to have, but it requires monitoring of vital signs and needs to be performed by someone with a lot of medical knowledge and certifications. One of them claimed that she had also undergone phenol peel and it looked ok for her. They only gave me sth to calm me down. My skin was supposed to start to peel down after two days, but nothing changed. I rushed to a dermatologist and was put on the strongest steroids, which caused severe breakouts that I was already fighting with. Some people get deep wrinkling which is like scarring and not typical of just ageing which can give the same feeling of destroying someone’s self confidence and overall quality of life. I don’t think it’s a bout perfection, it’s about not living your life like you need to hide yourself and feel like a shadow of yourself. If you don’t have those things that’s great. But some people aren’t as fortunate and feel the need to do it for themselves, when nothing else seems to work.

First, as a Brazilian I'm positively surprised to see a cover of unregulated treatments in the country. We are usually referred to as the land of the BBL, but issues related to it (and other procedures) are barely covered. You and your team also did great coverage, your sources are as reliable as it can be (such as A Folha de São Paulo). Second, you mentioned not being able to translate the videos in Portuguese. If there is any other video that you run into this issue, hit me up that I can translate it for you.

I'm a chemist, currently training in aesthetics with a background in pharmacy.
In the lab, I avoid doing anything with phenol because I hate the stuff. Having a drop on my skin scares me, let alone a full portion of my face (as I know it's done in sections to minimise arrthymia and the pain it causes!) Theres a reason this one is done under supervision of a doctor.
The results always look like plastic too as the skin effectively just becomes an entire burn scar.

    • @bluetinsel7099
      @bluetinsel7099 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

Exactly, it’s best when done with a dermatologist or plastic surgeon who understands the dermal layers and body along with the contraindications etc. it’s like a scarless facelift and needs to go through just about everything a person would for a facelift. A person has to be qualified to also receive the procedure and it’s typically done under anesthesia and on monitoring because of the potential arrhythmias that can be fatal. Also the percentage of the phenol chemical the doctors use is typically around 40 percent which is strong, an aesthetician typically does mild peels with low percentages that don’t peel like phenol does.

Very sad story. Personally the red flag for me would be if the person treating me didn't want to start me off on a milder peel. It is generally recommended to start with mild peels and work up to the stronger peels over time. I do mild peels at home, and the skin develops a tolerance over time which is when you can move up in strength. To go from nothing straight to phenol sounds like a bad idea to me. (It sounds like he wasn't given milder peels first, but I don't know this for sure since I don't know exactly what happened).

If you scroll through and read the comments from Brazil, they paint a very grim picture. Apparently this women had no formal university education. She just took an online course that was intended for medical professionals with relevant knowledge and qualifications *3 days after Henrique died*!
She supposedly purchased the "fenol" online and microneedled or abraded his face before the peel which should not have been done. He wasn't anesthetized or monitored appropriately. Then, to make things worse, she supposedly fled with vial of fenol at the first sign of trouble leaving her staff to deal with the fallout. I highly doubt anyone knew how to administer first aid or CPR. It's so horrifying.

5:38 These are not his scars! This is what the doctor did to his face! She *scratched* his face with the phenol needle.
Henrique's death was a fucking tragedy and, it's made even worse when you look at close ups of his face *before* the phenol treatment. You can see there's absolutely *nothing* there, maybe a few mild acne scars that indicate he was an adult man in his mid-20s. The vast majority of US doctors won't do a full face phenol peel in one treatment due to the extreme risks. The most common is cardiac arrest. So people would have to do about 1/4 of their face at a time. A lot of providers won't do them at all now bc the risk is just too high - and I'd imagine their clinic's insurance rates are a factor in that choice, too. I feel so bad for his partner and family and friends.

    • @minjaarsic3327

the providers are very right (and ethical!) to refuse to do the peel. phenol is actually banned for cosmetic use in the EU and Canada (and I guess Brazil too, now) because of the dangers. honestly any facial peel that can cause CARDIAC ARREST is right to be banned, because that's actually insane. there are so many less dangerous ways of treating skin imperfections than literally burning a layer of your skin off that I don't understand why anyone would choose this method at all.

Providers in the states who do the entire face do not use full phenol, it also contains croton oil which allows them to go deeper but with less phenol. This is called a Hetter Peel which is an upgrade from the Baker-Gordon peel from several decades ago. My plastic surgeon completed over 300 Hetter peels with no cardiac issues. The reason many doctors do not do them is because someone has to pay for those expensive lasers. One and done isn't profitable for most. More information at the Peeling Society.

I would guess henrique's cause of death was an arrhythmia. he had some symptoms of arrhythmia as described by his partner, and it would explain how sudden the shift in his health and his ultimate death was. two things could have caused this, either separately or one compounding the effects of the other:
the administration of nerve blocks like lidocaine, even when it's topical application in a cream or salve, can block the electrical signals of the heart when overapplied or given improperly. your skin can absorb enough lidocaine into the bloodstream for it to become dangerous. also, tissue damage as a consequence of significant burns can result in massive electrolyte shifts in blood plasma when the tissue "leaks" certain chemicals into circulation, which can also interfere with electrical signaling in the heart. phenol peels are essentially controlled chemical burns - they kill the top layer of the living portion of the skin via chemical burn in order to resurface it so that it heals more evenly.
i hadn't ever really thought about these hazards before, but it seems pretty obvious with this tragedy. there's very good reason these people are meant to be performed only by licensed, qualified professionals. scary, awful.

The biggest red flag for me was that she got her "certification" from an online class. Online learning is fine and valid for some things, like art, gardening, coding, learning language, etc. What it is NOT fine to learn online is anything medical. There is no one to correct your mistakes or give you extra help, there is no practical training, and there is no one to really tell if you pass or fail. Doing an online class is one thing, doing the thing in real life is another. No one should EVER be allowed to work on someone's body to any capacity if all their training and qualifications is purely from an online class.

i cannot imagine being the partner that had to witness his partner go thru this insecurity, then somehow find this clinic which he felt like would help him to look better and result in his d3ath, like i can't imagine

I am an R&D Chemist. I occasionally use phenol in the lab for reactions. It scares me to handle it in a lab with proper PPE. I would never willingly put phenol on my skin.

People always seem to forget that the skin is also an organ, and one meant to protect you from the rest of the worlds germs! So catastrophically damaging a whole ass organ without proper management will not end well as these poor people learned.

The first time i ever saw this type of procedure was more than 10 years ago on a TV show that I think is no longer made. This TV show (forgot the name) had friends or family nominate someone they know for being 'too ugly' and then the show made them 'beautiful' for free. They would go through anything the show decided from reconsfructive surgery, weight loss surgery, everything including this. I remembered how miserable the woman was who had this, who hated going through it all. She did look younger as her skin was tighter like the lady at the start of the video.... but, thinking back, the TV show was awful... wow.

Ive looked at these peels, and decided against them, purely because im not confident in being able to keep my face 100% clean outside of a sterile environment. With the type of damage they do, i dont understand how there arent waaay more horror stories about infections. Like, your house is clean, but its not sterile. Its multiple layers deep, and your skin is weeping and wide open to infection for 7 to 10 days minimum. Its asking for trouble, esp if you have a normal life and need to do stuff.

Here in the U.S phenol peels are usually done under general anesthesia.

That episode of AbFab where Patsy got a chemical peel and made everyone gag or faint. That was the 90s? It blows my mind how it’s back on trend. It looks like danger

Aesthetics and being “perfect” is just so unrealistic. People should go to therapy if they have this many crazy insecurities. It’s sad

Phenol peels can cause cardiac arrest which is why they should be done in a medical setting. Horrible for that man.

We recently had a case in Italy of a girl dying before getting rhynoplasty. Now this is still ongoing but from what I remember, the procedure was done in a hospital or clinic that wasn't qualified to actually do plastic surgery. And it's suspected she didn't get proper sedatives. I don't know much more as my mom hates the news and I barely watch them. All I know on top is that this was a cosmetic procedure and not a reconstructive surgery. And this girl flew all the way from Sicily to Rome to get it done and she was below the age of 18. People need to be really careful with cosmetic procedures and where they get them done.

I realized my last post made it sound like I blame the victim. I definitely don't. These people that do these procedures without proper expertise should truly be punished and all these people that offer these bs "certifications" should also be help accountable.

Everything about this incident was so wrong. The so called esthetician didn’t even had a degree. She really thought it was a nice idea to start performing the phenol peeling in her clinic, without any doctor to at least check on their patients vital signs, and what’s it’s worst, after watching some hours of an online program, which she didn’t even finished.

When i saw that phenol peel stuff for the first time i thought that just.... can't be safe or good honestly... i think this is where we're starting to go too far, we might as well start getting face transplants for cosmetic purposes at this point
