I did a 25 year old boat trailer and top coated with chassis black, and now a few years in and nothing shows rust , all brushed on , only 1 coat. Recently did my truck bed and I can say that it’s been easy to use and for me it’s the only thing I use from now on
In my experience using this product if you take rust down to clean metal with a wire wheel or sandblasting, definitely takes more than one coat to seal everything up or rust will start coming back through if you actually actually drive your vehicle in the weather a few times If it’s not just a restoration project that’s going to be kept in a garage.
Great product, if you just want a cheap and fast "back to black". What I'm more concerned with, is minimum mil thickness, and if it's a skinned encapsultor. If you sand skinning ecapsulator, you lose most of the protection. If you're just using it in single stage, it's not an issue... but as a base for paint, it's something customers should know.
Im doing some minor body restoration on my hubs car, should i buy the eastwood prep? And do i need to do a base coat after the encapsulater and then the color top coat. It is a white vehicle and the rust is in a door jamb
When prepping for paint you'll need something to properly clean the panel of dirt, wax, and grease. You can use traditional Wax and Grease Remover or Pre-Painting Prep. Pre is pretty useful to have on hand in general. www.eastwood.com/ew-pre-painting-prep-aerosol-11oz.html
I have an application I am considering using this on. I have an old hvac unit that has rust on an internal component. The HVAC company has advised me that the unit cannot be replaced due to it's age. It is currently still working and I want to prolong it's life as long as possible so scraping rust off at this point is probably not a good idea. Maybe a mild rub with one of your spray products will do the trick. Can I use one of your products to protect it from further rust. Maybe add a coat of liquid metal and then encapsulate it. This is a heat and air unit. Do I need to get a respirator to apply these products? I have an n95 mask. Not sure about the 350 degrees you mentioned in this video.
From the site: 6. If top coating: apply top coat after 4 hrs., or before 48 hrs. NOTE: If a smoother surface finish is desired, product can be mechanically sanded with 320 grit before top coating. 7. If top coating is desired after 48 hrs., surface must be scuff sanded with 320 grit paper to assure top coat adhesion. 8. Clean all spray equipment with acetone or lacquer thinner. So you could add more - or abrade and prime.
@eastwoodco I don't mean the part of the rotor that cones in contact with the pads, I only want to use it on the inch wide hat that has corrosion on it.
I don't seem to be able to order all the products, especially not the aerosols, in Europe. Don't you guys have a dealer/distribution network in Europe?
You can prime and top coat with whatever you want. This can get spray paint, primer, and base/clear if you want. We just sprayed bedliner over it recently: th-cam.com/video/ead1tdpcTuU/w-d-xo.html
We don't have access to POR15's chemical compounds but we can tell you Rust Encapsulator seals the metal off from oxygen so it is unable to rust any further AND it holds up to over 2000 hours of salt spray testing. And also it's ours ya know?
@@craigiefconcert6493 they don't need to own the formula, just pay to get it put in tins with their own labels. The same as supermarkets having generic products identical to the name brand products
No it's a special coating, here's the specs: • Matte Black Finish • 67% solids by weight • Approximate coverage: 96 SQ FT per quart for one coat • Proprietary additive increases product adhesion to rusted steel substrates- unmatched by competitive coatings • 1 coat assures maximum protection • Brush, roller or spray applied • Paint Gun: HVLP gravity or siphon with a 1.4 minimum needle/nozzle • Re-coat able after 4 hrs.- if top coating after 48 hrs., scuff surface with 320 grit paper • 2 hrs., tack free • Easy to apply • Topcoat able with virtually any high-quality coating • Maximum service temp of 350° Fahrenhei
Can this be thinned to get it into small joints or corners? Do you need any primer on top if you paint over it or is there any limit to what kind of paints you can use? Charles
Yes, it can be thinned with xylene up to 10%. Topcoat able with virtually any high-quality coating - primer wise it would be up to you depending on your application. For example, we recently coated a frame in Rust Encapsulator Plus then Extreme Chassis Black - we didn't use a primer in between as both were black.
por is more expensive for no more benefits. I ruined a truck’s body repairs using por products, looks good for the first year then breaks off in strips and chips, does not matter how good your prep work is.
We don't know the formulation of competitor products... but this will seal the rust off from receiving any more oxygen and stop it from rusting any further, then can be left or top coated, and has EXCELLENT adhesion properties. We've seen those other guys stuff fail and flake off after a year or so - ours will not do that.
I am using Eastwood on my floor pan repair over por 15 because it sticks better to bare metal and also rust I have both. with less prep . I have read about por 15 not sticking to clean metal.
love how they lie about it not covering the rust then explain that it in fact does cover up the rust, this does cover the rust completely and utterly, saying it doesn't because you guys are to lazy to properly explain it is pathetic
They thoroughly explained it, but let me help you further. By "just cover up the rust" he means that people ask if it "just covers up the rust and the problem, leaving the rust to continue to rust." Then he explains that, no, it creates a barrier that denies the rust oxygen, therefore stopping the rust from rusting further. Do you work for some other tool place or something? I see negative people on here all the time. I've bought quite a few things from this company and so far I've had great experiences. I've also been associated with some of their other services and subscriptions and what not and it's been great. I don't understand the negativity around this company at all.
I'm sorry... what was your point? It clearly says "rust encapsulator"... not "dissolver" or "converter".... ENCAPSULATOR. It's a polymer coating with a solvent compound that allows the binders to seep into the rust for better adhesion than typical chassis paint. That's it. No more. No less.
Hot take in the comments! Simply put Rust Encapsulator Plus seals off the rust and denies it oxygen so it can't rust any further - encapsulating it so that you have a clean rust free surface to work with.

Did you clean with a degreaser first? Did you use a metal prep or just scuff it up?
Great info, doing everything to fight the rust up here in the "rust belt".
Am from Somalia and I will dedicate my time to better my welding. And I will one day work with you guys

Why not just use a High quality paint if you've gotten It down to clean bare metal?
When Eastwood sold Corroless, I used it on a vintage car. It did exactly what was advertised.
We're glad you are happy with it!

Can I sand it and add more coats of it, like using primer to fill small metal imperfections?

6. If top coating: apply top coat after 4 hrs., or before 48 hrs.

Can I apply on top of a painted van bed?
You will need to properly abrade the surface first but then yes it can be applied over rust, bare metal, and paint.
What do you recommend to reduce it.
It can be thinned with xylene up to 10%.
in the video u said 20% ?
Are you supposed to use rust converter first?
No, you can apply Rust Encapsulator Plus directly to metal.
Can you put an undercoating over top of it?
Yes you can top coat Rust Encapsulator Plus after 4 hours, either with primer, paint, or undercoating if you prefer.
Works great, do not use if you ever plan to weld on the object in the future, it will not come off without copious amounts of flapper wheels
We'd also recommend welding before encapsulating.
Would this be good for some rust on my disc brake rotor hats that are getty rusty or would something like caliper paint be a better option for that?
There are methods to painting rotors when they are brand new - we're not going to advise you to paint a used, rusty, brake rotor.
@eastwoodco I don't mean the part of the rotor that cones in contact with the pads, I only want to use it on the inch wide hat that has corrosion on it.
Can this be used on brake calipers?
Yes! We have a video doing just that th-cam.com/video/XFX7zk37iIk/w-d-xo.html
Does the left over product in the can harden like Por15 rendering leftovers unusable?
This is good for 2 years unopened and 1 year opened in a controlled temp environment.
@eastwoodco can you do bondo work over it if so how can I sand this to put bondo on it
You could apply rust encapsulator, then an epoxy primer, and then plastic body filler after that. It would be a slightly un-orthodox method though.
Project farm needs to test this
Let them know! We do 2000 hours of salt spray testing to make sure it can hold up to whatever you throw at it!

Is it better than Chassis Saver? Considering both products on my project.
We are big fans of Rust Encapsulator around here.
What can I use for a topcoat? An oil-based enamel spray?
You can prime and top coat with whatever you want. This can get spray paint, primer, and base/clear if you want.
We just sprayed bedliner over it recently: th-cam.com/video/ead1tdpcTuU/w-d-xo.html
Is this the old POR 15?
No it's a completely unique product.
@@eastwoodco no it isn't. It's por15, admit it
Does this product convert rust also?
Encapsulator does not convert rust - it seals it off from oxygen and prevents further rusting.
@@eastwoodco is this rubber or oil biased?
It is Epoxy Fortified Enamel.
You will likely need a quart or two
I would like to know the difference between this and POR 15

Ahh its a plague that attacks metal in the north... called Rust or Iron Oxide.

Just like the model T - it comes in any color you want as long as it's black. BUT you can top coat it with whatever color you'd like.
