These just get better. Have you thought about doing one on the Cockley Cley headless torso, and the connection with the "Duchess" of Yarmouth/Lowestoft ? Always intrigued me
I find it amazing that burning women at the stake was okay so people couldn't see up your skirt. Hanging could be quick, though not all the time, it wasn't something that must have been agonizing as being burnt. I hope the coroner lost his job. Another great post and as always great illustrations.
Yes it is a very strange one, although I think by the 1700s they normally strangled the person before hand so they weren't burnt alive, not that something like that makes it much better
🫣 the skirt would be the first to burn off. The igniting stage of the pyre is the pain. if truly engulfed in flames, they would quickly die of asphyxiation. And what fun is that, for entertainment?
Anne was strangled into death before burning her body. The executioner may have saved her from the long agony of burning to death. A better death? I hope to never know.
Lousy coroners are still around There was an infamous multiple murder case in the US recently, often flagged as "Doomsday cult" murders. Three of the murders took place in the staggeringly benighted state of Idaho. Until recently, if your ambitions leaned in the direction of deadly and pervy cult creation, Texas was No 1 on the hit parade of states where you could abuse children and kill people with gay abandon. Utah was always a close second, especially if you were of Mormon background. But of late, Idaho has clasped the worst of the middle ages to its holy-underwear clad bosom. The state legalized death by firing squad...as a way to get around those annoying pharmaceutical companies refusing to sell them drugs with which to kill people. And the laws they have introduced pertaining to maternity-fetal medical care has seen all but FOUR of the doctors in this field leave the state altogether. And those 4 haven't said they would stay.. 2 million people, a lot of whom have about 8 children, 4 prenatal doctors. There were multiple times that number just on the ward where I gave birth (at UCHs Elizabeth Garrett Andersen hospital!) So this is the world that the Doomsday cult couple were operating in. They sold books to a very enthusiastic and growing fan base about how they spoke to God daily. And God, believing in estate planning, was kind enough to tell them who was going to be dying in the upcoming months, giving them enough time to take out multiple life policies. The local Mormon Church was so pleased with their pious speeches and God chatting that it gave the man more and more senior positions in all Mormon affairs. This man had told his neighbors that his wife would be dead soon,. They were surprised as she was training for a local half marathon. They expressed their concern for him. No worries, he replied, he'd found himself a "hot and loaded" new lady to step into the vacancy. Sure enough, one Saturday morning, the local coroner was seen pulling into his drive. She and he chatted, over the corpse of his wife. He informed her that his wife had been coughing a lot last night. The coroner said "good luck with your new wife" and signed the death cert which she'd written "natural causes" on. When, later, the FBI were investigating, they asked the coroner what her medical training was. She was affronted. Why should she need that? This is Idaho, they don't need doctors even for prenatal care, God's in charge of that stuff. This man went to church a lot, so what was the problem? Her job was printing out death certificates, and she'd given him the 15 copies he'd requested...for the Insurance companies, she'd banked her fee for her services. Done and dusted. There is NO medical training of any kind at all needed to be the coroner ..which is the same as the medical examiner...who among other things gives "expert testimony" in court for things like, oh, murder trials. It remains to be seen whether she'll be called to give evidence at his upcoming trial. Idaho has no plans to alter their requirements for becoming a coroner, though the law makers are trying to ban Romeo and Juliet from libraries ...because they consider it obscene.
@@salishseas Ah cheers! In truth I figured I'd probably get back a fair amount of abuse, given the number of idiotic policies and beliefs I was giving a bit of a kicking.
Sometimes women were burnt at the stake because they were charged with 'petty treason' because they had murdered their social superior (a man/husband). It was a worse death than hanging and meant to be a deterrent to others.
Another example of my philosophy of "fear stupid people" because they will kill you without a hope of getting away with it.
Excellent video!
Really enjoyed and appreciate your time and effort in these stories.
Thank you sir.

Absolutely brilliant writing. You wouldn’t find a bigger Doomsday Cult Mom aficionado then here with me. Thoroughly enjoyed reading this.

Sometimes they would be drugged or a small bag of
a gunpowder would be hung
round their neck so when it
exploded they'd die quickly.
🤷😕
Burning to death!!! That’s a drawn out horror story
Sadly was unable to find any information about Ruby.
