When we've reached the 25th and 50th commenters, I'll do a draw for a free ball of Rowan Softyak DK (US addresses only).

Thanks for a great show.I was born mid fourties but can just remember my mom & god mother knitting pencil skirts.Wish I had the pattern books now that they used then.

My aunt was still knitting pencil skirts in the '60s. I have several of them...and was never slim enough (even as a teen) to fit her dresses. If I ever knit a skirt, it won't have that shape, that's for sure.

Great interview Billie - Sydney's vintage knitting looked as 'authentic' as it comes. Before it was more fashionable - in the 70s I used to try to adapt my grandmother's patterns to something more contemporary (for that time anyway) with only varying degrees of success - and always sizing was an issue if you didn't have a 32-34" bust - and I was never that small. Still it made me realise such things were possible and now in my 70s I still consider 30s to be the most attractive of vintage gear and eye off the dresses in particular even if my current body wouldn't slide into them with any great 'elegance'. Best wishes

Della...so glad you enjoyed it. I like your phrase "wouldn't slide into them with any great 'elegance.'" Made me chuckle.

Great interview Billie and Sydney. So interesting I've learnt so much! I'm going to look closely at old family photos for clues regarding who may have been knitters. I'm definitely going to try and knit a sweetheart sweater.
Best wishes from Sally from the UK xx

Oh Billie and Sydney, I am in awe!! thank you both so much, this was wonderful in so many ways, inspiring, heart warming, touching. I am definitely going to check out the patreon, even though I am intimidated by vintage knitting and keep sticking to modern things...it was so useful to have shown the prototype sweater on which to build on and personalize..such a lovely lovely episode! 💚🌺

Thanks Billie! I wish I had some of my mom’s vintage clothing (born in 1920) that I see in photos. Not much hand-knitted. But here’s a wedding photo, 1939.

I asked my Aunty Olive (86 yo young) and she told me of a garment my grandmother knitted her for her 5th birthday (1942) it was white and red in moss stitch, short sleeved. I have tried to search for pattern but to no avail. I would love to knit this garment for my Aunty to bring that memory back of her mother. My grandmother passed 2 years later when Aunty was 7 and my father was 5.

There's a group on Ravelry called Pattern Detectives that may be able to help you find said pattern.
