Flight Sergeant Rusty Waughman and his crew sang this song as they returned safely from their missions. When Rusty and his crew joined 101 Squadron RAF they were not thrilled with the plane they were assigned: a battered old Lancaster named G - George. But their dislike of the plane soon evaporated for G - George quickly proved herself to be a lucky Lancaster : withstanding many flak hits and getting them home safe even with engines blown out. She even got them through the dreaded 1944 Nuremberg raid where Bomber command suffered it's worst casualties. And each time they came into land the crew sang "on a wing and a prayer". At the time of writing Rusty is still alive age 98.
