Alex, I Just bought a 2020 Hyundai Sonata SEL 2.5L with the Convenience package. I'm Averaging 26mpg (city); Overall. I Absolutely Love it. Thank You, Sir!! - Steve
If you are seriously shopping a specific car, Alex's videos are the most detailed and complete. There was a previous video with an OEM's product planner, and Alex was more knowledgeable. Very impressive, given that Alex needs to know ALL manufacturers' cars, and a product planner needs to understand just one.
Holy s***!!! My God !! They have nailed design like almost nobody else. I mean, seriously, that's one slap in italians' face. Wow. Hyundai design team need some kind of an award.

Compact sedans were never going away, their marketshare was simply dropping. With other manufacturers dropping these vehicles from their lineup, that obviously leaves more of this niche available to manufacturers like Hyundai, so it makes sense. I don't think they'll sell more than 60K or so a year though, unlike pickup trucks that are selling the 400K-900K units range. Even I finally gave up and bought a truck because, frankly, they are really practical. I can haul four people in luxury, I can "win" in almost any vehicle collision, curbs are a non-issue, they have good towing, and whether you are picking up a pallet of grass or 30 bags of mulch or whatever you can toss it in the back without stinking up your carpet in your vehicle. Granted an SUV with a trailer can do the same, but most us in suburbia find storing a trailer a PITA, and you never have it when you need it meaning you have to explicitly plan the trip. Parking and backing up with a trailer is also a huge PITA.
Alex you're the best no non-sense reviewer! My 2004 Sonata LX was a fantastic commuter that I put 204,000 miles on in 12 years; added gas struts and Groits and a fantastic service writer for scheduled maintenance. Now my 2016 Hybrid Limited is performing Great! Great couples' Interstate traveler and (maxed) 644 mile range! Takes a Coleman steel ice box and two to go bags in the trunk. Cruises full electric mode down I-5. Sport mode in the climbs with torq to spare and my wife tellng me to take it easy; and all the while still getting 42-44 mpg. And it doesn't cost me $40+k. If only they made a Hyundai hybrid truck. And optional Sonata hatch back. Thank you Hyundai. Stay the course.
Before the 1980s all rear turns signals were red. European and Japanese companies brought in yellow turn signals. And on really old cars like my 58 Cadillac. Front turn signals were all white.
I’m honestly so happy you talked about child seats!!!! As a new father looking to go from an Elantra to a sonata, that’s something I’ve never seen any other reviewer talk about. Good on you Alex! Amazing review.
We test drove a 2020 SEL Plus Sonata today and were blown away impressed with it. I've always been a GM fan, but decided to look at other offerings and glad we did. The Sonata was basically loaded for about 23K. We also looked at a Regal, which was originally my preferred choice, but found that even the completely option-less base model was listed at 25K!!! Not even heated seats on the Regal. It's insane. The Regal was brand new, and a 2018 model year sitting on the dealer lot still in 2020... Really tells you something. I can see why it's being axed unfortunately. Way to go Hyundai, you just may have a new customer here in a couple weeks. Nicely done.
I know it’s a little ridiculous to say controversial. It’s a wider and larger grill than last years and doesn’t come close to the size of the Avalon’s grill. That’s it. Nothing controversial about it. You either like it or you don’t. And that’s fine cause looks are subjective.
Could look much better. I dont mind the grille so much is just the front corner edges that over accentuates the grille. Soften the right and left fascia and it would look much better
I just can not believe how far Hyundai has come. I have had an Azera which I loved and now I currently have a 2019 Santa Fe, unfortunately I actually need the cargo space otherwise I would certainly consider this new Sonata Hyundai just gives you so much for the money.
Just got a 2021 Sonata SEL Plus in that same Calypso Red. Absolutely love my car! It drives wonderfully and looks much more expensive than it was. It definitely has hints of Maserati and Audi in its design.
Something I just noticed about the 2020 Sonata that nobody has talked about yet is in the B-Pillar, down where the Door Arm rest aligns with the B-Pillar there is a "Cut out" in the Pillar plastic so if there is someone who is really tall sitting in the Front seat (Passenger from what I see) they can still rest their arm on the door arm-rest without hitting their elbow on the B-Pillar. That's very Unique. I haven't seen that before in any other Make-Model of vehicle. To see it, look at about 9:47 in to about 10:24.
I'm in LOVE with the design. It looks purposeful and stylish, without seemingly unnecessary random creases and other design elements. Hyundai did an amazing job. Interior (at least in this trim) looks Lexus level to me.
@Daniel Hernandez Agreed. Though the "turbo grill" is nice, I prefer the grill on the 2.5 models. Has a more luxury feel to it and the details are nicer to admire.
Agree, bring back the wagons! The space of an suv with the comfort of a car. Crossovers are just imposters. I was just thinking what if they tried a 3 row car?
No reason they should because the Sonata and Elantra have been very popular for years now and the Sonata has been a very sexy, dependable car since it was completely redesigned and relaunched in 2010. My 2013 Sonata has had ZERO mechanical issues, and that is no lie. The only thing I've ever had to replace on my car so far are the tires, a couple headlight/tail light bulbs, and air vent knobs. And then your normal liquid flushes and what not that not a lot of people even do. I love the Sonata and cannot WAIT to get the 2020.....so sexy.
Thank you for mentioning that these new engines in the Sonata have dual injection similar to Toyotas D-4S, all other reviews just mention direct injection.
They removed a lot of the smaller details that differentiated hyundai from everyone else. Gone are the rear sunshades, rear heated seats, up/down movement for the front seats, and oddly enough they omitted the rear motor shade and passengers seat side controls for rear seat control that were included in the Korean spec. Coming from a 2016 Sonata Hybrid Limited, I see these as downgrades... They really want to push us to Genesis for all this tiny details that, when added up, really set Hyundai apart in amenities.
*I WONDER WHY THEY DIDN'T MAKE THIS AN ACTUAL FUNCTIONAL LIFT-BACK?* Makes them so much more practical and the design lends itself to that 5 door style!
My first exposure to your video's. I give you a 10 out of 10. Excellent presentation; good flow of hard data and subjective values of the car. Excellent comparison analysis with other vehicles in this "segment". I highly recommend your site and look forward to your evaluation of the N-line of the Sonata.
I'm leading Hyundai Elantra. As a long time Toyota owner and still owner of two 4runners, highlander and a Camry. I found my self...amused with the car. Overall, t general impression from testing driving the Sonnata was that if you opt for the premium package and u have 3 people in it, that 1.4 engine screams every meter of the way to catch up to speed. However overall I think they would very quickly match Toyota camry. The quality is as good, it offers all the safety features and it has reinforced body panels that have high grade steel that run in the middle of the doors and material is just tougher without sacrificing weight. My 4runners and camry all are less than 5 years old will begin to form waves in the hood at high speeds. You can feel, sense and hear a thinner steel on the Toyota. The Sonnata has less body roll than the camry. The only thing camry has ever Hyundai are the powerful engines. I hate the 8 speed from toyota its constantly fishing for gears and it's always in a higher gear with alot of lag. It's even like that on my 4runners and they only have 5 speed. Sure then5 speed is reliable and I, sure the 8speed will be too. But something needs to be done about the running. Hyundai response is just better. They need to offer a bigger 4 cylinder version. Like 2.5 liter and twin turbo. Had a bit more insulation to the vehicle and get rid of the awful frill and trim it up a bit and you have yourself a winner. It already is imo, just a more competitive winner.
Great in depth review. I appreciated the fuel injection details about the 2.5L eng. I'm a fan of sedans and don't need or want an SUV. This car is on my short list for next vehicle.
I enjoyed this first drive! I love Hyundai's design, constant leaping improvements all-round, and their attention to customer feedback. I'd have to test drive the Sonata, but the Camry XSE feels SO quality and I currently own/drive an 03 Camry SE, so I'd most likely stick with the Camry. :3
I sense some sort of Lexus inspiration inside the cabin. Also, ever since Lexus redesigned the Rx on 2016, most companies have been making their head units a bit similar. It has been a trend for sure.
What is odd, is that this car to me does not look as good on video as it does in person. I had a chance to look at the sonata while I was having my car serviced the other day and I was extremely impressed. They had a fully loaded premium model in the showroom and I was actually shocked at the level of detail and elegance of the interior, and The sheer attractiveness of the exterior. I had never considered Korean cars until I was swept off my feet by my Veloster N, but holy cow... The more I look, these guys are Balling! I bought the Veloster for commuting and fun, but I also have a 2009 Nissan Titan for my other needs and work around my property. Although my truck is low mileage and in very good mechanical condition, I would be very interested to see what Hyundai could come up with if they tried their hand at pick up trucks!! These guys just walk in and give it their all. The company reminds me of Honda back in the 80s when they were hungry.
I thought I would always be a sedan person, then I had a kid and live in MN. Our RAV4 is way easier to place our kid in the car seat and throw the stroller in the rear hatch. The RAV4 also handles way better in snow and ice and groomed dirt roads. My Honda Accord does handle better and is more comfortable on longer trips, but overall the RAV4 is more suited to family use.
I wonder why until today no manufacturer build a collapsible center in the back seats. Who will seat in the center will have a lever below the seat, pull it forward and the seat collapse to give him head room. When you go back to a 2 people back seat configuration, pull lever again and the center will rise to the default position to give lateral support. Is it difficult to engineer????
I think automakers keep making sedans lower and lower to push more people into crossovers. I first noticed seat height dropping in the 2016 Civic, then Accord and Camry. Corolla didn't drop as much as the Civic, but they still lowered the roof line so now headroom is tight (especially with moonroof) and more drivers have to lower the seat to fit inside the new bodystyle. Now the Sonata has lowered the ride height and roofline and buyers are forced to turn to crossovers just to get back to "normal" seat height and headroom and to not scrape the underside when turning into a driveway.
It has already been noted but the rear light design is very “Honda”. Every front grill on earth looks fair and reasonable since Lexus went crazy with theirs.
@@truantray If all you've ever know is recent Hondas then yes i'd agree. However, pre-2002 the Honda designs were very car oriented and desirable ... then the dumb 4 wheel drive craze came along and Honda's CRV sold like hot cakes. It then altered Honda's thinking about design and the 4WD influence was visible in all their models since. If I'm not wrong Alex mentions that this Sonata uses the Accord as its reference. Honda chooses to make the bulk of its cars as transport first ... but when it decides to showcase it's engineering know-how in a sports model then their race bred identity over shadows their competitors. There is a reason why they are the only Japanese super car manufacturer (GTR is a hammer).
I'm impressed by each of the Sonata since 2014. My wife has the '15 and while its base engine performance is a mehh, the exterior styling is great. No matter how many times I see it, it's very upscale and pleasing to look at. (I can't say the same about the Camry and the Accord, but that's just my opinion) The '17 model looks great also, but I think this one pushes the envelope farther. The upcoming N- model is definitely gonna be a beast with nearly 300 Hp. People who were looking for that sort of performance had to turn to the Chevy Impala and the Dodge Charger (with the Impala is discontinued beyond '20) the new Sonata N may just gonna win over some of that crowd, myself included. Did you say 245 sized tires? Holy momma, that's nearly corvette rubber barrels! I'll be looking forward to see the review, I'm guessing 1st Quarter of next year!
It's unusual but pleasing to look at it. I wish I could say the same for the current gen Elantra. Feels like Hyundai is testing the waters with vastly different designs between generations. I hope this one sticks. Trunk button location is genius btw.
I feel the exact opposite, I love the design of the new Elantra, but I don't like this design with the long chrome line up to the lights. I seem to be in the minority here. Except I agree with you on the trunk button location being genius. The Elantra's is identical, and it has been hilarious to see multiple TH-cam reviewers, including Alex On Autos, say in their Elantra reviews that it's unfortunate Hyundai decided to not equip an exterior trunk release button. It was there all along, just too genius for them to recognize! Glad they have figured it out now though!
My 2015 Hyundai Sonata was getting harder and harder to get in and out of and now they lowered it! I recently sold it and it's probably the last time I'll own a sedan. Which is a shame, as I really liked the 2015 and my wife loved it. But my future is pickup trucks and SUV/CUVs.
Everyone is complaining about how the new Sonata looks. But lets keep in mind, the new Honda Accord is no cat's meow either. I absolutely hated the new Accord. The last gen was so much better. But people are still buying them because of the Honda name. Hyundai has to be bold. Last gen Sonata was a snore to some. And when you in the market where SUVs and Crossovers are dominating, Hyundai has no choice but to up to ante and revised a look that will have people talking. The tech features is what is going to sale this car. Not to mentioned it's 10 year/100k miles warranty. I can't wait for the 2021 Kia Optima to be released in the U.S. It will really have folks gagging. Toyota, Honda, and Nissan needs to be afraid!
I like the sleek sedan look, but they should have actual hatchback trunks like the audi sportback. The added practicality might attract suv buyers who just occasionally need the space.
What the point of offering an "up level" engine with 10 less hp and 14 more tq. The upcoming N is intriguing but like the Mazda 6 with the turbo or Fusion sport it won't really do anything in terms of sales. I think if it had AWD and was a hatch like the Arteon it would be better if not a sales success. Also is using a fob really such an issue?
Between the 2.5 and 1.6 i don’t see myself trading my 15 Optima sxl with the 2.0t that would be a massive power decrease hopefully you can review the upcoming Optima GT or Sonata N
There's like 40 seconds of black screen scattered throughout the video. Interesting several reviewers have noted wind noise. Hyundai used acoustic laminated glass and the competition doesn't, maybe Hyundai has a problem with fit? I like this look in red, but every other color I hate it.
Kudos to Hyundai on this car. Better looking than a Camry or Accord...maybe the most attractive car in this segment, in my opinion. Also, nice that they don't force you to get take their mediocre DSG to get the turbo engine...conventional auto for the win. My only beef with Hyundais I've driven is they seem to have pretty bad steering / on center steering feel. I think they lag their competitors in how they implement electric power steering. However, this may have improved with this car, I look forward to driving it.
I went to a hyundai dealer to see the Veloster and feel for this one. My only issue was that it was a bit slow, and I am just sad that the N-line is not out yet :( but I am willing to wait!
The interior surprisingly nice and elegant considering the weird front end styling. Rear end is quite OK, but overall, still a lot nicer than the Camry or the Accord.
Nahh. The 2011 and 2013 was the best 2014 and 2019 not so good. But this new one look nice. But I noticed the kia never make any change since the 2011 refresh until the 2021 come out
What happened to the bumpers? It used to be a solid piece of plastic at the front and rear. Now there is no bumper. One slight hit to the front of back means expensive repairs.
Just couldn't compete with top foreign family sendans like Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, and Nissans. GM cut half of their compact and sedans to focus on SUVs and Crossovers.
I would say the Camry TRD will probably give the N line a run for its money. That particular model is really geared twd performance and it has 301HP standard will the N line beat that?
Not a fan of the steering wheel because the plastic piece is where I keep my left hand half the time and that would be pretty common I would think. Seems like an unnecessary design change for the sake of being different. That could keep me from buying the Sonata.
Hi Alex. My family's budget is exactly $27k. I would personally prefer a sedan to a crossover, but we would like AWD here in northern Vermont. Would you recommend the Altima, Camry, or Legacy? I'd love one of these sonatas, or an accord, but they don't offer AWD.
I don't understand why anyone is surprised that the Buick Regal is going away. It's less about the shift to SUVs and more to do with the fact that the Regal was an Opel Insignia and GM no longer owns Opel.
Waiting for 2020 Sonata PHEV version . . . my 2017 Sonata PHEV is cheapest imaginable vehicle to drive and maintain, two kids and dog love the back seat, only wish there was a pass-through hatch in the trunk for hockey sticks etc. Hyundai's PHEV powertrain is better than anything from Europe or Japan IMHO.
Did you guys use a new camera for the interior segment? It looks great! The extra depth in the shots make it more like actually sitting in the interior.
The front end has grown on me, but with the 275hp I have in my 2013 Sonata 2.0t Limited...I have to wait for the N-line! Or the potentially more handsome Optima GT with the same 2.5t and 290hp...and oh yea Genesis is upgrading the infotainment and base engine on the G70 with its rear wheel drive platform...ALL will be great options the Koreans are REALLY doing good lol!!!

Button gear shifter, electronic dash, che-e-e-e-e-e-e-eap interiors on low trims. And, I am not sold on the front end. This car is 50/50
Surely a Hybrid is the most rational choice in the mid-size sedan segment. Don't get me started on the sacrifices necessitated by the 'swoopy' style.
Well ya. They have to sell the genesis. They need to think like Toyota and cut corners if they want Genesis to sell
new screen and controls are very well done
Dem Gold Toe socks making an appearance! This is a nice car, Hyundai/Kia are really stepping it up and deserve shoppers attention.
*I WONDER WHY THEY DIDN'T MAKE THIS AN ACTUAL FUNCTIONAL LIFT-BACK?*
Makes them so much more practical and the design lends itself to that 5 door style!
My first exposure to your video's. I give you a 10 out of 10. Excellent presentation; good flow of hard data and subjective values of the car. Excellent comparison analysis with other vehicles in this "segment". I highly recommend your site and look forward to your evaluation of the N-line of the Sonata.
Man Hyundai has really come a long way. It looks great to me.
best car reviewer in TH-cam.. you deserve mooore views and subscribers
#1 professional car reviewer! Thank you!
I did not like this look when I first saw it months ago, but I think it looks great here and now.
So I can mod my Pikachu amiibo to unlock my car? Seems legit. Lol
Great in depth review. I appreciated the fuel injection details about the 2.5L eng.
I'm a fan of sedans and don't need or want an SUV. This car is on my short list for next vehicle.
Can always expect some great information from these videos. Going car shopping soon, and information is key to a good choice... Thank you Alex! 👍
This is an impressive car for the money not bad.
Grizzy Bear why are you even on this video then lol just for you to hate?lol
Comparing a design to a Honda is quite the insult to car designers.
I'd rather see Station Wagons coming back to North America.
Excellent review as always, very through! Love this new look!
I'm impressed by each of the Sonata since 2014. My wife has the '15 and while its base engine performance is a mehh, the exterior styling is great. No matter how many times I see it, it's very upscale and pleasing to look at. (I can't say the same about the Camry and the Accord, but that's just my opinion)
The '17 model looks great also, but I think this one pushes the envelope farther.
I love the design
I feel the exact opposite, I love the design of the new Elantra, but I don't like this design with the long chrome line up to the lights. I seem to be in the minority here.
Except I agree with you on the trunk button location being genius. The Elantra's is identical, and it has been hilarious to see multiple TH-cam reviewers, including Alex On Autos, say in their Elantra reviews that it's unfortunate Hyundai decided to not equip an exterior trunk release button. It was there all along, just too genius for them to recognize! Glad they have figured it out now though!
As excellent and professional as ever. 👌👍😎
Can't beat the classic lines of a well proportioned sedan, not too sure about this Sonata though; maybe in the flesh.
Jimmie Jefcoat Not!
I so wish you guys would review the models with the chrome grille, that front design looks way better than the black grille design
N line sounds interesting, can't wait for that vid
Looks hot. Cant wait for N version.
The front lower treatment and taillights are alittle too funky but still looks better than other midsize
Also is using a fob really such an issue?
it's stunning actually
Between the 2.5 and 1.6 i don’t see myself trading my 15 Optima sxl with the 2.0t that would be a massive power decrease hopefully you can review the upcoming Optima GT or Sonata N
The 2011-2015 Optima SX/SXL is a tough car to beat. Peppy, decent fuel economy, well equipped, reasonably priced, and they still look fresh today.
The 2015 Optima is a real looker.
Brilliant car I love it.amazing review as usual Alex.Thank you and keep up the good work.
I love this car. Bought this car. Mine is named Thee Stallion - moody sassy nasty. This car is magical. I freaking love it.
i dont know bout that card using the car to open and drive.. hmm. alot of steps and just wonder how it will work over the years.
There's like 40 seconds of black screen scattered throughout the video.
Interesting several reviewers have noted wind noise. Hyundai used acoustic laminated glass and the competition doesn't, maybe Hyundai has a problem with fit?
I like this look in red, but every other color I hate it.
I love this red color, but I think the yellow is nice too.
Honda (and I think Toyota) use active noise cancelation. Honda's is really really good in the Accord
I want to get the Hyundai Tucson 2020, I just crashed my 2017 but the interior bores me. I’m digging this sonata
The N line will decimate all once that comes out... I cant wait...and I ain't gonna lie the looks are growing on me😏👌
I went to a hyundai dealer to see the Veloster and feel for this one. My only issue was that it was a bit slow, and I am just sad that the N-line is not out yet :( but I am willing to wait!
The interior surprisingly nice and elegant considering the weird front end styling. Rear end is quite OK, but overall, still a lot nicer than the Camry or the Accord.
Sonata is one of the best looking sedan, as always it is~
Nahh. The 2011 and 2013 was the best
2014 and 2019 not so good. But this new one look nice. But I noticed the kia never make any change since the 2011 refresh until the 2021 come out
Alex, Like the Accord, some people are having issues hitting their right knee on the center console. Have you found that to be true for you?
ThanksAlex been waiting on this before buying.
What happened to the bumpers? It used to be a solid piece of plastic at the front and rear. Now there is no bumper. One slight hit to the front of back means expensive repairs.
That's for the insurance companies to deal with. Doesn't change your deductible.
Compare your insurance premiums for the sonata vs other sedans.
I would love to wait for the N-line but my 2011 elantra is kinda falling apart so I don't know if I can wait that long.
The Buick Regal is being cancelled. Why?
Great review as always, but the video editor got her revenge.
12:18 Feet getting too hot, Alex? lol
i have the same socks
Piano black center console seems to be a fingerprint magnet, that's what I've seen in the Phoenix auto show
The front end has grown on me, but with the 275hp I have in my 2013 Sonata 2.0t Limited...I have to wait for the N-line! Or the potentially more handsome Optima GT with the same 2.5t and 290hp...and oh yea Genesis is upgrading the infotainment and base engine on the G70 with its rear wheel drive platform...ALL will be great options the Koreans are REALLY doing good lol!!!
