Mortal Shell: A Rough Soulslike Gem

Mortal Shell is a decent first effort by a small studio making a soulslike, an off-short genre of hack n slash or action rpgs inspired by the Souls series, usually Dark Souls. It has some nice atmosphere, a unique defensive system that can get you out of dangerous situations, and some interesting lore. But it's also pretty janky, is pretty short and there aren't that many unique bosses. It's a good starting point for people venturing out of the From Software selection, and don't mind the mixed levels of quality found.

This game was such a perfect little slice of variety during the pandemic after replaying a lot of my favourites in the From catalogue. Strict learning curve, bit janky, and yes, it does take a hot minute to get rolling (especially if you make the same mistake I did and go to the stone biome first) but the surprising updates to core mechanics, balance of items and progression, and the ability to establish a learned flow state smoothly between kinetic action and use of the harden mechanic made it such a nice treat in those lonely months. Also really loved the one hit mode, the final boss was thrilling to conquer like that!

Love this game. So damn dark and weird, really impressive for such a small dev team. Not perfect and not everyone's cup of tea, but a real sleeper hit for me.

I think this game is kinda heavy on the parry system to get free heal rather than dodging the enemy attack by rolling (ofc u can use the hardening body to deflect enemies attack too) which most of souls like player don't wanna do and still try to dodge and getting rolled by the enemies' attack (yeah the dodge rolling sistem is bad, but dodging by rolling is not the optimal way to avoid enemies' attack in this game)

Personally, I haven't had too many issues with dodging. As for parrying, it's helpful, but you can't use it as frequently due to it being tied to the resolve bar. I'd say that it's just a regular souls like game. LOTF, Wo Long, Sekiro, and Lies of P are far more parry centric.

I really like the idea of this game, but the devs didn't know what they were doing. There are traps all over the place. Even if you are aware of them, they are still annoying to avoid. It's not like it's difficult to avoid stuff, but it's straight up annoying. Oh and it's definitely NOT a good starting point for people wanting to get into the genre. It's not even a good game for people who generally enjoy soulslikes. This game is a 4/10 at best. And I'm being generous.
Don't get me wrong, I don't want to hate on people who enjoy the game. If you do, good for you. But this game is a mess.

I said it was a good starting point mainly because of the limited variety of shells and weapons. You're not overwhelmed with choices like you are in the souls series. And it's shorter too, so it's not a big loss of time if it doesn't click. Yes, I'm more than aware of the bear traps.
It's a first game effort. They'll probably have a clearer goal in a sequel.
