"Can you look back over your political career & say you were fully honest the entire time?"

The quality i most admire about Rory is that he is willing to embrace a bipartisan form of politics where divides are diminished to acknowledge common sense policies. Unfortunately, the current political climate doesn't allow for such progressive thinking, unless of course there is an international or local crisis where cross party collaboration is blatantly necessary.

I am very much on the left. Me and my wife saw Rory Stewart in 2009 or 2010 at the Hay Festival in a talk in a small tent chaired by Jon Snow. It was very good and he came across as highly intelligent and interesting. He was wearing a very stylish ( and seemingly expensive) jacket which I think he said he got in Paris, if memory serves me rightly. Prior to this we had not heard of him but he has continued to impress with his interviews on a range of topics in the years since. I would no doubt disagree with him on a number of issues but the ability of politicians on both sides to be able to engage with each other in civilised discussion as exemplified by Rory Stewart is important to democracy and public life.
He is positive about Theresa May; she cut police numbers disastrously under austerity as Home Secretary and oversaw the hostile environment policy to immigration, both unacceptable. The Guardian has published a timeline of the policy. Even Johnson when Mayor of London called for an amnesty for illegal immigrants, recognising their contribution to the economy.

And at the bottom, they're still grateful that he actually paid any attention to them at all. And that's the crunch. You have a distant, disconnected and entitled government, who pay more attention to their corporatesnd oligarchic donors than to voters, and who indulge in corrupt practices. And unless your vision of democracy evolves solutions to that, it's going to just get worse. We need to look at things differently. We need to strive at least to return to being a responsive democracy, where the public truly are the major stakeholders in this enterprise, instead of marks to be grifted by the grifters in Westminster. @@capturedflame This is a very good point. I don't think most have ever heard of TWFY or know how to check a voting record. Having said that, you should be more specific if making a counterpoint. What objectionable things did he vote for?
In any case, who is someone attached to a major party who votes independently 100% of the time? We as voters should pin them down on the spot to hold them accountable for why they vote as they do. Some of those backbenchers are a disgrace. Their only purpose seem to be cajoling cheerleaders with no real purpose. We should hold them accountable for this ridiculous behaviour too.

when the election is so far out it is seen as unwise to start announcing the policies you intend to centre your election campaign around.
      A) things change. and those changes will effect (possibly all) important aspects of one or more of your policies
      B) don't allow the other party any more time than you have to, for them to effectively run a scare campaign against your policies or time to steal them and run as there own .
      C) people forget quite quickly and also are subject to propaganda/bias in the news media which may well mangle your message in their mind , esp true in the UK news media which is 95% tory supporting.
seems best to flood the electorate (esp the marginal seats that you could/might win) with a easily digestible , consistent and relevant message for a month or two in lead up to election day.
timing is everything, as is all your party's MPs understanding the details of, and sufficiently believing in , ALL the policies in the campaign enough to fully answer or confidently dismiss /deflect any Q from the media...and the public

@@DJWESG1I get it, I want the conservatives gone too, and if there was an election tomorrow I'd hold my nose and vote Labour but that's more due to a broken voting system and a lack of viable options.
He needs to be something at some point, rather than constantly banging on about what he's not, if he's to stand any chance of inspiring anyone to vote for his party other than the people were always going to vote Labour anyway.
All I know about him is that he has a terrible track record for making the wrong call, he often distrusts what the public are telling him when it doesn't match His own desires, he doesn't particularly like unions or the CLP, he looks on new Labour as an ideal to work towards despite Tony Blair currently polling as the least popular party leader of any major party in the last 50 years, and he's fanatically supportive of the police force no matter what they happen to be doing at the time.
It doesn't exactly add up to a portrait of a guy that people are going to rally behind does it?
Until he gives us a glimpse of some kind of guiding philosophy - something that he actually believes in - he's just an empty suit.

Abusers are charming and plausible - they have to be or they would lose their power to abuse so effectively. Neighbours and colleagues don't see anything but the charm until the day they go too far. Johnson always goes too far eventually and, being in the public eye, is rapidly running out of people who don't know him.
