  • Rory Stewart is an independent candidate to be Mayor of London.
He quit the Conservative party after losing its leadership contest, during which he made short videos, walking around the country, asking the public to meet him and question him.
We went on one such walk with him around Brixton, before stopping at Morley’s for some chicken.

You could trust a politician who lied to his majority leave constituents just to get elected and stood on a manifesto he decided he no longer agreed with after the fact? You're the reason why we end up with the shit politicians we end up with. It's "I could have".

What you see is a open and balanced mind but also a technocrat and former civil servant and diplomat- he knows the ins and outs of government and how to boost productivity; he does not care for politics and realises that politics causes division and corruption by appealing to the rich. Is he privileged? Yes but, he is principled and in a way reminds me of an old English gentlemen- caring for all people and open and pragmatist. Rory as mayor would be a fresh change for all: young and old. A vote for Rory is a vote for a new approach to daily life and the link to politics.

    • @fwark466

Yes, and he realises that someone with his privilege (and experince, gifts, and - as you pointed out - his understanding of many of the systems) has somewhat of a duty to use this to make lives better for people not afforded that privilege

I like Rory a lot. I do believe he’s a sincere man and unlike the majority of politicians, he’s had to make difficult decisions. Once in Iraq, the compound where he was based was completely surrounded by a rebel group. The leader met with Rory (he speaks Arabic) and informed him that if he and his staff surrendered he would guarantee safe passage out of the city. Now, what would you do if you was in his shoes? In the end, Rory decided to stay and wait for reinforcements. He knew the history of previous British officers who left their fort/barracks. They never survived.

The only problem with him becomingTory PM would've been that the rest of the party would still be in Parliament. Despite the partisan support that he appears to have, I think it's also important to remember that the PM isn't omnipotent and the MPs that many people on the left of the UK's political spectrum still can't agree with would still be there - having Rory as PM wouldn't have changed this, leaving him, and many of the people that would've voted tory instead of Labour because of him, very frustrated indeed.

Corbyn apologised continually in fact it was ridiculous he had to so often, the smear campaign against him was awful, Andrew Neil hasn't taken down anyone he merely engages in nonsense claims, I've never seen anyone take down Nicola Sturgeon and honestly Rorys position on Scotland is awful, it infuriates me when English people think they know what Scotland wants or needs. Too often the Westminster government treats Scotland with contempt and its impossible for any English MP to understand Scotland and its people because we don't share the same ideas or desires

  • @TheBenchPressMan

I’m sure he can share his smack pipe with all those he talks with in London, because they are objectively not British.
Working class people in Britain realise that Brexit is good for them, that mass immigration effects them directly, effects the services they use and the jobs they find, alongside the quality and pay they receive.
The only reason London does not hold the same views as the rest of Britain is because it’s population is not British, if you where to ask generational locals of Mile End how their neighbourhood has become a Muslim majority neighbourhood, i’m sure they would reminisce to a time (not long ago) when things where very very different.
Britain and British people do not want to their country go the way of London, and as such they have and will continue to support Brexit.

@TomaberFoyle No budget contributions to the EU, no freedom of movement and governments will no longer able to use the EU as an scapegoat for their own failings.

    • @alanpartridge2140
      @alanpartridge2140 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@TomaberFoyle You just asked what I considered to be the advantages. On balance I am not sure whether leaving the EU is a good or a bad thing.
With regard to immigration low skilled immigration will prevent wage growth and encourage wage stagnation, rising accommodation costs and acceptance of bad working conditions amongst the lowest skilled in this country, London being a prime example of this effect.
Increasing the overall size of the economy does not necessarily help the average person or improve the quality of life and at the end of the day it is unsustainable. A developed country should not have a constantly growing population.
Look at Japan, their population is more or less stagnant and have been in and out of recessions for the past few decades and their economy has barely grown yet their quality of life is very high, it is for this reason that I would say Japan is one of the only developed and sustainable nations.
Also if it was such an issue, ending free movement with the EU does not mean an end to immigration, less than half of all immigration to the UK comes from the EU and despite what the Tories tell you, not all those coming from outside the EU are highly skilled.
