Jonghyun was a great support system for Taemin, it makes me think his absence must have something to do with Taemin's depression. Taemin said it several times that Jong understands him the most. Taemin being a very closed person who is always smiley hides a lot within himself , god knows what really happened with him during his service that made his depression worsen . I'm glad the nightmare is over for him. Now he is home.

Jonghyun also experienced depression, anxiety and more. No telling what Jonghyun had to endure within the Music Entertainment Industry, himself.

You missed a whole important aspect of why that behavior was seen as "normal": South Korea is a very homophobic country, especially men on those variety shows. But also, many Korean fangirls love to fetishize anything that involves gay men or more "feminine" traits on men. That's why nobody saw an issue with treating him like that, especially more than 10 years ago. Can't imagine how a gay fanboy in SK or even in the West must've felt like seeing how Taemin was being made fun of, sexualized and feminized just because he didn't present himself as super masculine. This problem is way bigger than just Taemin, it's a whole society's old mindset of how a man and a woman should look and behave 😢💔

LOUDER, this is true!! They sell it as fan service and fans go nuts when they see any gay interaction between members, I think is because these fans HATE the idea of their Idols/ "OPPA" being with other women (famous or not) but can stand them being 'gay' between their members (I'm not sure how that even make sense but it's how I perceive it so far)

Yessss the way Taemin (and even Key as we can see in the vid) was treated in the media is really a symptom of how societal attitudes demean queer men/ppl--and by extension, all women. Anything seen as less than a perfect iteration of masculinity is free real estate for disrespect.

That is so spirit crushing. I cannot imagine how it must affect those who have the preference for others of the same gender. How agonizing and utterly unfair. To have to live up to extremely demanding standards is already difficult enough. But to also bear this added burden. Ah, my heart.

      This comment!!!
This applies to so much more than kpop too. The entire genre of yaoi/Yuri manga is extremely unsettling and it just sexualizes gay/queer relationships and it's sickening and gross. (I prefer to just call it mlm/wlw but I will occasionally say bl/wl).
Taemin is my bias (basically my ult. Bias) and it's just so sad to hear how he gets sexualized AND feminized. Also, the disrespect he's gotten since his discharge from the military and gaining weight. It's so sad that he got that treatment because stress, anxiety, depression ALL can contribute to weight gain (even if your diet isn't bulky!) there's just so much I could say about this topic and I'm glad this video was created to call out these horrible behaviors.

That's why it's so hard for me to watch the early years of Shinee. The variety show culture was just so creepy around them... Didn't they have a whole show about the members going on dates with Noonas (for Replay debut)?
The way minor idols are treated in kpop just sends shivers down my spine, and it STILL happens today.

@@brennathecatlover4360 I think they didn't have the choice. They had to smile and laugh but I can feel there were not comfortable. They wanted to sing and dance not to be treated like animals in a circus. Most of those kind of shows were stupid. There are also limits with "joking". And the ones making the show should have looked at themselves first because there were totally ridiculous!.
      Poor Taemin 😢. Jonghyun wasn't blind !
Happily our Taeminah is back .... but Jonghyun is still missing. Anyway 5HiNeE will always be five ❤️💎💎💎💎💎✨🌸🎶. Taemin is shy so I hope he and the other members will never have to bear such bad attitude from anybody.
That is the problem in South Korea. They can't just say "leave me alone or shut up"! People can be so mean (and that is in the whole world). Thank you for the video 😊

I’ve always liked Jonghyun, but was SO pleased when he very clearly warned the interviewer to back off. Wish the other members had joined him. If I remember correctly Jonghyun even wrote for Taemin called Pretty Boy, about Taemin’s struggles. I think Jonghyun struggled with some of the same issues as Taemin.

  • @kirakoga
    @kirakoga ปีที่แล้ว +339

Jonghyung was also the one who wrote "Pretty Boy", the song that Taemin sang with Kai from EXO, which talks about this feminisation that both boys had to go through during their first years after debuting.
I've been a Shawol almost from the beginning and still to this day it makes me sick watching the way Taemin and all of them were treated during those variety shows. It is all super creepy and very toxic.
I am so glad that Taemin is back home and thriving, already working for his groups and solo comebacks.
Thank you for making this video, not many people realize the way Taemin was (and sometimes still is) treated and the fact that he had to through a lot while debuting so young.

Back in 2013 Taemin changed so much. His looks and behavior started to be more "manly" and he wasn't taking those "girly" jokes anymore. At the time he was finally of age and tired of this feminine image, he said so himself he felt uncomfortable that people compared him to a girl and that he wished to be treated as a man.
Even with his members, he started avoiding the maknae treatment, of them babying him.
He stopped acting innocent and started doing some sexy things.
A major part of his brand was being the cute and innocent boy who looked like a girl so when he changed a lot of his so called fans didn't like it, I remember some of them wishing the old Taemin back.
Coincidentally or not, it happened after Shelock era, when he was constantly being compared to a girl due his hair + being of age and SM pushed him to do more fanservice with the members, mostly with Minho. The 2min fandom was up the hills at the time, and I think it even got too much.
Back to 2013 again, Taemin started refusing the fanservices and even seemed angry sometimes about it.
The first moments of awkwardness with his new persona faded giving place to people thirsting over the new sexy Taemin.
I feel as if Taemin was never truly respected, his image always being exploited. At some point he did turn more empowered over how he presented himself. Not pushing the overly masculinity or falling into the innocent boy role, but finding a place for himself. Even though, you can see how people still treat him as some sort of exotic specie. He took his place as a soloist, but sometimes it feels like he's falling more and more into industry's hands.
Taemin reminds me a lot of Sulli, who was also treated as some sort of puppet, a beautiful porcelain doll. The difference was only that Sulli had a breakdown after so much abuse and we can't deny their genders play a role in how they both were treated.

There is definitely something about him that attracts people to him and that attention can obviously be good or bad, wanted or unwanted. As the youngest and the shyest member, he must've seemed like an easy target. He's been a public commodity since he was 12 but that should not be at the sake of him being made physically uncomfortable by it. Things go too far if he needs to be shielded by another member. Some of this was downright creepy. I'm not super familiar with the culture and am not sure if it's considered good TV to fawn over a 18 year old kid expecting him to kiss you. I heart Taemin but he is no longer that young kid, he'll be a 30 year old man in July with more life experiences than any of us will ever have the opportunity to know. My hope is that when he's done with his military service he can have the control of his life he deserves and can take a more adamant stand against creepy shit like this.

A lot of people pass the sexualization of him off as men being 'gay' for Taemin. It makes me uncomfortable that he was objectified and these things actually aired for people to see without questioning of how wrong it was. I've never heard Taemin directly speak against how he was treated in this way but my heart goes out to him as I know how uncomfortable he must've been. The behavior towards him shouldn't be normalized and I'm glad you made the video to bring up this issue. Taemin comes back in less than day and I can't wait to support him further ❤

OMG now that I think about it it probably has to do with Gay people being associated with being a pervert/pedos, which I hate it's such a bad stigma that causes hate/harm towards the LGBTq community. The one comedian the constantly picks on Taemin(the guy that tried to touch him during view era then Jjong because he had a tank top) That's his whole act, my sister said that he constantly "acts gay" for his comedy in the past, and he's toned it down more recently.

If Tae was an adult in all the clips that would be different, but i still don't like him, coming from someone that is part of the LGBTq community.

I feel like a big reason why he gained weight during his service was not only because of stress/not having to follow a strict diet. But I wouldn’t be shocked if he did it to try to protect himself from creepy ass men. It’s not taemin’s fault he is naturally beautiful. Breaks my heart that I didn’t realize how sexualized he was until I got older. Makes me so sad. But it warms my heart just how protective Jonghyun was of him. Also really cute that he wrote Pretty Boy for Taemin and Kai so they can reclaim that title and give it a new meaning. Jonghyun was too pure for this world. Thank you for sharing this!

This is reaching. It’s more likely that he simply went from eating the standard kpop idol 1-2 meals per day to 3 meals per day. Taeyang also gained a ton of weight. They both dropped it after the military, so I don’t think it was about protecting himself at all, even if he was harassed previously.

I’m glad that Taemin is posting about his awareness about this in Advice. It’s like he weaponised his femininity and with Advice even with feminine silhouettes he went much more grunge, with long hair that was definitely deliberately more greasy, which isn’t common at all to see idols look unkempt. The line “I destroy the torso you sought after” and him showing his tattoo officially was like a big fuck you to people who wanted him to stay pretty. I hope he is able to take even more control of his music and I also wish the best for new jeans too

This has been bugging me for the longest time and I 100% agree with everything you said. I love how Jonghyun tried his best to protect him and I can't even begin to imagine how his absence may have affected Taemin and my heart goes out to him. I have a theory that Taemin and many others in this industry have experienced crazy amounts of sexual harrassment from both the people in the industry and some of their overzealous stans. These noona fans and uncle fans can be the worst and I aknowledge that there's nothing wrong with being a fan of younger idols but sexualising them and not respecting the age difference is very creepy. What gets to me the most is how normalised this stuff is. I remember Taemin saying that he gained weight during the interview he had while in the military and he was happy about said weight gain. Part of me wonders if he hates the super slim phyique that SM insists he has and that he'd rather have a healthy "masculine" physique as he had to live most of his life in a body that people "feminised" and fetished and had probably had enough. Thank you for being awareness to this, more people need to talk about this issue.

I remember being upset all the time when watching them promote songs and seeing how horribly these hosts would treat Taemin. Constantly telling him he’s pretty and better looking than most girls.
He was very smart though by flipping the script on them with Move. By purposefully leaning into his feminine side but also showcasing his fit muscular body at the same time he took their power away and gave him the power.

Their is truth to this I almost agree with everything said but I will also need people to stop changing the fact that taemin was a child taemin at the time he was 20 or 17 years old. He suffered what cannot be imagined he went through which is hard to go through. He was thirsted by creepy old men he was also objectified multiple times called prettier and handsome at the young age he had old female ladies waiting in line for him. It is creepy and can drive one’s personality to a lot of different places when a person grows up they learn through experiences and stuff that happened throughout their life and a person u met at 20 years old they won’t be the same at 29. The point is yes taemin was feminized and objectified and called gay and stuff but we also cannot deny he after move era became a very different person specifically after want it was as if we saw a new taemin the taemin who made almost homophobic comments in the past in interviews due to creepy men thirsting over him he practically told a boy to back off and said he will only let the girl touch him. The same taemin who made that comment went from saying that to in move era saying that he wished to have more fanboys and wishes he had more male fans as he had non anymore. The point is shawols often forget K pop industry is homophobic and to act homophobic there is a good thing yet still shinee were always different and supportive of LGBTQIA community. What I mean to say is taemin sexuality cannot be assumed based off the comments he made as a teenager he himself said due to circumstances at that time (like creepy men thirsting over him) he had become a very different person but now he says he is different specially in his advice interviews he told he is not the same anymore. I see some shawols say this that yuh he likes girls don’t say he is gay because 13 years ago when he was literally 17 he said something like he doesn’t like to be called princess and that he doesn’t want men to like him but for those shawols I want to say assuming straight is assuming his sexuality as until he himself tells us or even if marries we can’t be sure also the way I see it at some point taemin said fack it and became as feminine as he could be to cross those same homophobes and weirdos and now we can’t be sure what kind of person has he become but form his art I see him leaning more towards his feminity and he is growing more comfortable in his skin for his comments in the past I am sure if a bunch of old thirsty men were after u anybody would act homophobic and deadly to save themselves from that and that doesn’t mean taemin is straight lol so y’all need to calm down otherwise I agree with this video young age debut is a problem as a person still haven’t even discovered themselves as a person how will they discover who they are as an artist. But even I said a lot of stuff as a teenager that I don’t believe anymore so yuh 😗

I became a fan of SHINee when I was seventeen (17). I am three years younger than Taemin. At the time, I didn't really understand how horrible and actually disturbing some of what he was going through actually was. I was awestruck by him the first time I saw him, and was eager to consume any media that he was in. I wanted to support him, to show how much he and the group meant to me back then, that I would avidly consume any media with them in it, without really knowing or understanding what was going on. Looking back now, I wish he wasn't put into these situations. it made me believe that they were okay, and ended up with me being passive in similar conditions, where I should have found a way to stand up for myself. I will always love SHINee, and I look back on these clips with a mix of nostalgia and hurt, because while I loved seeing these in the moment, with an adult perspective I understand they never should have happened in the first place.

Okay, so I personally hate when people make fun of or say unpleasant remarks about people be it males, females, or whatever gender for not sticking to the style that their gender is supposed to have. Like when guys have "feminine" style or when girls go more for the "masculine" look. I identify as a gender fluid (I was born a girl), and I love androgynous style, so whenever I see someone who is got a similar taste I get really excited. Idols like Taemin, Amber (F(X), Key (Shinee obviously), Ren (From NU'EST), Jimin (From BTS), Hyunjin (Stray Kids)...etc can be considered examples for people who got more of an androgynous vibe/style going for them, or might straight up be into the opposite sex supposed look.
I myself got through lots of harassment from my mother and rude remarks for not looking too feminine or being too boyish, weird, and there has been moments when my mom even told me that she think that something wrong might have going on with my mentality cause she struggles to understand if I'm a girl or a boy. Even after I told her that I never liked being a girl, I do enjoy some of the girls thing, but I don't feel like a girl, but also not fully as a guy, I do wish I was born a guy instead, but now I just go for both ways I guess. Even when it comes for my type romantically I always prefer guys that are more on the "feminine side" with long hair and girls that are more on "manly side" with short hair. It might seem odd to others, but that's my personal preference.
These types of comments or constant remarks about someone sexuality or style, in a negative way can lead to some serious psychological issues or insecurities. I know cause for some time back when I was a kid, I did think something was wrong with me cause I wasn't like the other girls my mother wanted me so hard to be like, but as I grew up I realized that there was nothing wrong about it, it's okay, and now I don't even care about her opinions any more. Guys can have it harder cause the harassment they get for not being too manly can be way worse than crap girls get for being tomboyish, I know that and that's why I do agree that what Taemin went through was wrong on so many levels.
I did see many guys who do start liking nail polish, try to grow their hair long...etc but then get bashed and humiliated for it like crazy , or viewed in a gross manner like Taemin, and so they panic and decide to completely change their looks to fit the others standards and it makes them miserable in the end.
Anyway all these idols I mentioned earlier instantly caught my attention back when I first got it K-pop as a kid, and I love them for it a lot. They also had a hand in helping me feel better about myself and like my style more.
So when I see guys being made fun of for having long hair, being pretty, wearing more colorful and obvious make up, or doing more soft dance choreographies blah blah that irks me, cause it's clear homophobia. South Korea is among the most homophobic countries out there till this day and since I myself live in a fellow homophobic country where being gay isn't even allowed and there is a great obsession with gender roles, so I can't help but get angry over it.
The whole sexualization thing, I mean calling a guy pretty or looking good in "women" clothes or whatever, if it's not meant in a homophobic way, in my opinion isn't an issue, I like it when other guys are confident and open minded enough to not mind complementing the looks of a another dude, or even say he is hot.
The issue about Taemin here is how gross they make it, they try to touch him and in weird places on his body, say the "compliments" in a very creepy and they basically sexually harass and try to molest him while making it seem like a joke (Especially when he was a minor, that was even more creepy). They call him princess which is wrong, yes the can call him pretty or very good looking, girls can also be called handsome or cool, but making it seem as if he isn't worthy of being called a man just cause he is pretty is irritating. If he happens to like androgynous concept then I really hope he never change that as I really appreciate it, and I'm really glad that the bullshit he went through didn't make him try hard to change that image out of trauma (Mostly if he actually liked to look that way back then too), he does seem to like it now, since he always goes for that style in his videos, outfits, and dances which makes me happy.
He probably was more forced to look that way as a young idol by SM to get more fans who love BL stuff or something, which is okay, I like BL myself, and I do agree it's a clever idea, but the force part is what worries me. If the idol are okay with it then cool, but them being forced to look certain way or wear clothes that make them uncomfortable or overly sexy for their age should be changed. That picture of him as minor being shirtless, had major pedo vibe to it, I bet the person who made him do that enjoyed it a lot...

I was a teen/20s in the hippie era. (👍) The long hair that lots of men wore never made them feminine. Trust me. Men for centuries wore long hair, all the way back to Sampson. The gender viewpoints today are still so harsh and bigoted. Taemin looked great with long hair! And as far as his “prettiness”, he is pretty because his parents genes made him that way. Yet there is no doubt that he is a MAN. And I love his self-styling as slightly androgynous on stage. He’s also sensitive and caring. WHY do these characteristics disqualify him as a man???? In today’s world, I wish more men could cut the hard macho crap and be sensitive and caring of others.

I am very happy that Taemin has managed to get ahead despite all the difficulties, we will always be there to support him and finally we have him back ❤️
Personally, for me many variety shows are extremely uncomfortable and made me cringe, many times they are so overacted that it is simply a no no for me, if to us viewers make us feel that way I can't imagine for the artists who are there.
All of this makes me very sensitive and is very delicate, really the industries have to stop debuting them so young, at the age of 14 they still don't even find their personality.
The NWJNS thing has me in shock from the first day that we learned about their manager, they are so young. I agree with you, I have seen many comments about "Taemin was 14 years old and look at him" but that is less than the tip of the iceberg what we see.

This video was way overdue. I made the same observation in another video, the one in which he is harassed by the adult men in a classroom setting. SM should be ashamed. SM deliberately sexualized Taemin as a child. They targeted him because of his age. And, they held his ambition to become a successful idol hostage. It was either you do as we say or leave. Even if he had tried to leave, they would have kept him mired in debt. This is why these agencies want to isolate these kids. They want complete control over them. It is the agency that shapes the images of these kids. They become products of the agencies, and these agencies have only one goal: to make money. They typically care very little for the humanity or mental and emotional well-being of the Taemins in the industry. In the US, this would be considered CHILD ABUSE. I am proud of Taemin. He persevered , and he won because he is still standing, standing as a talented, confident young man. I hope he continues to grow and achieve all of his goals. I pray he continues to find much success, peace, and joy.

Wow, those interview clips (particularly those in the "Sherlock" comeback era) really exemplify the nasty combination of homophobia and misogyny, along with harm of children, that we see normalized in all entertainment industries. Like, so many of the interviewers joked about him basically being gay because of his looks, and those jokes almost always coincided with implications of him basically being a "woman". Not shocking, seeing as there still exists this notion that feminine/queer men want to *be* women.
The misogyny comes from how comfortable these (often) men felt implying sexual things about Taemin for comedy. Using his supposed feminine (implied "gay") traits as fuel for a sexual punchline----ex: the interviewer commenting on his extensions, the comment about his v neck shirt, the "pretty princess" line. The joke in all of these is "haha feminine guy so funny and odd". In the end femininity is the butt of the joke. I'm not surprised such jokes were made about actual girls/women at the time.

It's too late now to disband groups with minors, and be aware and spread awareness is the best we can do to protect these young boys and girls dreams... like, recently people want to brush off things for example with Haerin and Bambams situation... idols like Taemin and Hyuna are proof of what "brushing off and take it as a joke or thinking it's not that serious" can really destroy them... the more awareness, the most cautious people should be with their intentions towards these young boys and girls

Already knew about this, but don't feel like watching it, at this specific moment (not in the mood to watch older clips of Taemin being efeminized for others' convenience). So I will come back later, to it. Thank you for making a post about this, though, because it is very important to discuss this.

This video needs more views and this needs to be talked about more. It’s so sad that he went though this. I see a lot of themes in his songs and videos about loss of innocence and being exploited especially now with guilty. That military experience seems like it was very traumatizing and I seriously hope he’s ok mentally. I think putting those things into his art is one way to cope with it. I know he has family and friends who love him and I hope he isn’t afraid to seek help. He’s such an inspiration for me as a hard and selfless worker, and he has helped me come to terms with my own gender identity as well as feelings of grief, guilt, and lost innocence though his Music. I love him so much and he deserves the best.

I wasn’t a shawol during this early era of Shinee but to see how the industry has continued to debut minors when they’ve done nothing to protect or improve the music industry for idols, staff, and other roles make me wish that idols had a union or some sort of workers rights initiatives.
I know this issue isn’t isolated to South Korea but with how difficult it is for artists to break into the scene there without a company backing them, I hope there will be a movement that addresses how they fail artists from their grueling training regimens to debut and beyond.

The problem with ANYTHING in kpop is that artist are considered IDOLS. Fist problem. ALSO, they're not allowed to say anything to ANYONE. LITERALLY
If they show slight discomfort towards a host or fan, they'll receive backlash. And we all know how that mostly ends
I think if they were able to actually say at that moment that they don't like something said or done to them, people will be a bit more considerate. NOT ALL. HUMANS ARE STILL SCREWED UP CREATURES
But sticking up for yourself results in getting backlash, rumors spread, more hate from fans, possible ended career, shows not wanting you on their anymore. It's all crazy in Korea...
The sad part is that idols are made to believe the support from these people are the only thing that keeps their career going. If the whole fandom is dumb enough to turn on you because you don't like being sexualized or called girly or gay all the time (or at all), they're not fans, but psychopaths and need serious help
They also need to be put in their place and silenced

I agree with the entire video. There's only one thing that i have to correct you on, mhj told taemin that he had to go shirtless before the ace photoshoot and not before the sherlock one. I really don’t agree w minors debuting they should at least make it 18 minimum. I’m glad taemin is back and he looks healthy but it’s sad at how once he came back he was dragged on the internet :( taemin really needs a break. I’m glad more and more people are talking about what he went through. That Japanese interviewer dude really creeped me out a lot. The whole interview was him being super weird towards taemin. 3:40 Actually he says 야해 which translates directly to sexual/erotic, a step farther than sensual or sexy. Very inappropriate. If you've seen the content where Taemin teaches Haechan the choreo for Idea you'll see how he himself differenciates both terms and considers his dance sensual NOT sexual.
