- This is a very rare Vintage Oil Lamp made in France made in 1900 confirmed by the seller.
He told me that his grandfather use this lamp to the country when storms came and the current sopped.

Watching my Dad do all kind of "fix-it" chores is how I learned a TON of stuff. Some people don't have that pleasure now a days. You are helping a multitude of people learn how to reuse stuff instead of buying a new and a feeling of accomplishment. Love your videos and by the way, I am a retired women.
Another railroad lamp. I am an active railroader; fourth generation, and my dad has a couple of these in his house.
This is a switch lamp. It sat on the top of rail switches at night to signal which way the switch is lined. When you throw the switch, you lift up on a handle, turn the whole thing 1/4 turn, and push it back down again. So, the lamp is white when lined straight, or red when lined the other way. On a switch lead (a track with several switches in a row) a switchman can tell which tracks he is lined for from the top of the lead. Then he can kick cars (send them rolling free) down the lead and know which track they will go down without walking all the way down to inspect.
We have electric switches in some yards with an electric lamp (switch indicator light) on each switch nowadays.

The original Green Lantern comic book character (1940) carried a Power Battery for his ring that was a railroad lamp. The metal that made up that lamp actually came from a meteorite spiked with magic. (Don't ask -- the background behind that is a headache and the storyline gets altered every 20 years!)
When I saw this lamp, it automatically reminded me of Green Lantern/Alan Scott.

When you show all the disassembled parts before the restoration. Add a part that doesn't belong, could be a good guessing game every video! :)

It's funny because I usually have a love for things that look old and worn, like they were used a lot. But with your videos it's just so satisfying to see everything fresh and shiny again. I like to imagine that the things you've restored feel like someone going out in their best Sunday frock after a makeover for the first time in years, refreshed and confident. Just lovely.

I sat here quietly for 10 minutes and 33 seconds then cried out Awwwww. I actually like the color, rather unique. When I was 12 years old, I went to say with my grandfather in Houston to ride out a hurricane in 1982. He has a bunch of old oil lamps and we lit them when the storm knocked the power out. Fun memories. Thanks.
Beautiful work. If I did this stuff, I'd have to have a glass factory close by to replace all the glass I'd break. I'm a DYIer but haven't tackled restoration. I don't have many of the tools you have, so I DYI vicariously through you. I learned a lot of repair work and the interest in doing it, literally at the feet of my dad. I was usually the flashlight holder if we were working in a dark place. But, I learned a lot, especially the will just to DO repairs and builds myself. I've saved a LOT of money over the decades.

I love that you went off script on this and did a totally outstanding color. When I saw it un-restored I wanted it in a dark anodized green as I am a vintage Green Lantern fan.
I recently restored an all brass "anchor lantern" from around 1910. Came out awesome. Wasn't anywhere near as involved as that lamp. I just disassembled it, polished it, added a new whick, oil and it was good to go.

Lighter fluid is naphtha which has fumes like gasoline, these lamps are supposed to use kerosene.

Charcoal lighter fluid works the same as kerosene and lamp oil, and some people call it .... ehhh.... let me think... oh yeah, "lighter fluid."

Charcoal lighter fluid at the quart or liter size is about $3.39. Lamp oil is more at the same size.

My Grandpa worked for the railroad circa 1898, he had a larger version of this and it used a candle. The inside was highly polished so after I inherited it I used it and it really put out a pretty bright light!
Sand blasting is my favorite part, so relaxing)

If an oil was used, there would be no chance for it to explode - no fun.

We've all been there...knew a guy who did the same thing with a car door window. Talk about expensive.
Guy installing my windshield. As the new one was hovering above the car to be put in, it folded in on itself in 3 places.
I've done that exactly. Regulator broke so I replaced it. Tightening the last bolt of the regulator to the window and POP! Glass snow all over me and the car I'd just gotten glass out of...
I cheated though got a junk yard window. I think they charged me $15 for it.
@@nasonguy thank god for junk yards. Got half my AC system from one and only paid about $30. Cost more to charge the thing after I rebuilt it...
Razz415. Pull A Part yards are the greatest. I hate that I only have one in my town, but it’s better than none. All the other junk yards pull everything for you and charge darn near new prices for anything that isn’t a motor or transmission.
Plus you can grab as many, uh, “pocket items” that you need, haha.
I'm not sure about the color, but the work that you've done on this is just magic. Congratulations on a beautiful job.

@@billmiller7138 It's not a re-purpose if it serves the same function. They are restorations, just not historically accurate restorations. Perhaps they could be called modernizations. I do agree with the color thing though, it's a bit obnoxious. But then again it is his and he can do whatever he chooses!

I’m not a fan of pop rivets but I appreciate the restorations, and to be fair if you go to Meriam Webster one of the definitions of Restore is “to put or bring back into existence or use” so therefore nice Restoration Tysy !

It's a shame those cheap 'chrome effect' spray paints are actually just 'silver'.
Not a criticism of your work, just the false advertising on the paint cans.
They do the same thing with nail polish too. It's a bummer, but it still looks nice in both cases. :D

Just a short 5 decades ago, anything silver or chromish paints took like 5 years to set and the look at best was of thin wrinkled cigarette paper. What a mess it was!

You should check some of your local stores for kerosene instead of using lighter fluid. I believe kerosene is a more appropriate fuel for most lamps like this

Awesome and enjoyable to watch, always. The red glass color reminds me that it's partly the reason why we have the term "Red light Disrict", though railroad workers would have a full red lantern, sitting on the porch of brothels, they'd visit. Keep'em coning.

Now you need to restore a matching lamp, painted in that hammered blue you like so much. I like it too.
How long did the 'chrome' coating last that close to the flame?

@@yeagerxp just gonna throw this out there, chrome plating was developed in 1924, meaning this lamp, made in 1900, never had a chrome finish to begin with.
@@Fektthis it is good to know about the history of when chrome plating was started. Realistically speaking he saved something not made in china from the garbage bin.
@@yeagerxp I feel much the same way except made in China 1900 sounds like something worth saving to me as well. All those who complain it's not historically accurate are missing the fact it's gone 100 years without anyone doing anything to preserve it. He extended it's life by decades. The time was just about up on this as well as most of his projects.
Those sirens added so much flavour to the video. Especially given the subject item.
Because it has a side mount bracket (where the screws fits into the slot flange), and a red side marker window I would say it is a vehicle lamp (not necessarily an automobile), also this would be a right hand side lamp, the reverse image lamp would be for left side (otherwise white light would face to the rear). If it also had a green window it could have been a ships lamp, or possible railway lamp. Came out nice, but why pop rivets (real rivets are common & authentic), purple paint (dark green-safety red-orange O/K), buy some kerosine (or coal oil) lighter fluid too volatile? It's was a nice vintage lamp, now looks like made new in India for the $ store market.
It's a carriage lamp the late 1800's and early 1900's automobile lamps are called that too. I too wished he had use a rivet over the pop version but I get why as they are far easier to use.

Just a question (sorry if it's been asked before) : why use paint stripper and then sandblast ? Wouldn't the sandblasting takes care of it all ? Thanks for your answers !
Yeah, I wondered the same thing. Paint stripper, sandblast, and then hand sanding...was all that necessary?
@@jeffw8057 Lead Paint was extremely common back in the good ol' days. The point is to strip the toxic material off before sandblasting so you don't generate a ton of toxic lead paint particles in your blasting hood, as airborne particles are harder and more dangerous to deal with than stripped sludge.

According to wikipedia the french word is "Kérosène". That´s the stuff that is made for oil lamps. Lighter fluid will ruin the wick real fast.
Lighter fluid will evaporate very fast. It is not supposed to be used in this lamp; very dangerous.

I do appreciate the effort you put into all your projects! You also do an excellent job of editing video showing your processes without dwelling on the process too long. I recently saw a video in which a guy had over 5 minutes of footage of him melting a babbitt insert out of a bearing! A very boring babbitt bearing. Your composition is excellent!

Good catch! I agree, that must be what it was for. I've seen several antique cars with lamps similar to this.
@@eemelisaurila9940 It was probably on the back of a car with the clear glass facing sideways to illuminate the number plate and the red glass facing back to provide a tail light.
It's an old carriage lamp. The clear lens faced ahead and the red lens was a side light.

Honestly Tysy, you were the first restoration channel I came across. Since then, I've seen a lot of new channels use the same setup (wood work bench and white background). With that being said, until proven otherwise, I'm calling it the "TysyTube Standard". 😂😁
Wonderful job, though the color disappointed me. The pop rivets took away some of the antiquety, but was a necessary evil. Still can't believe u found this thing in one piece.
