1960s Rusted Military Lantern Restoration

  • This is the most beautiful Army Lantern i ever seen.
    Was produced in France for Army in 1960 and was utilized for airplane signalization.
    As you can see this lantern was metallic gray but behind was green, i don't know why, looks like was made like that.
    This lantern was very oxidated and rusty. The two lenses were yellowish and blurred.
    I decidet to make green this lantern to mach the original color.

      Your current polisher is fine. You need a new start capacitor. If you change 1 out, change both so you don't have to later.

    I like how you’re adding little captions throughout the video. Maybe add one at the end that tells us how long the whole restoration took? I’m genuinely curious. Love the video!

    That lamp was made the same year I was. Some days I feel in need of a restoration. You might give it a thought, a whole new TH-cam idea. The sandblasting might sting a little.
    As always a great job on the restoration.

    @ 5:08 yes I certainly want to try! I I need a sandblaster. Manual sanding with paper just a pain in the posterior and never this good.

    The military was still using these in Germany in 1980/81. We got repair parts for them to keep them functional. They were heavy and bulky, but they did light well. I seem to remember the ones we had also came with red lens/lens covers for night operations. Nicely done, sir.

      Views are calculated differently now - it doesn't count if you just open the video, you have to watch at least half of it for it to count as a view.

    Really nice workmanship on this lamp. The front light was to get to the landing zone. The dome light identified the landing zone, one worked but more was better. Usually had 4 to I'd the pad area.

      Karina, you can get the skills by doing stuff like this. Start small, you will fail some times, but failing is a great teacher. And before you know it, you will own a sandblaster box.

    replace capacitor on grinder should turn the right way right away if not install one

      take the capacitor off completely, and you can spin the motor in the direction that you want. i did that to my sears lathe motor, and i can run it in reverse to cut sanding time in half.

      @@timpani25 Potentially dangerous, though. Most grinders spin downwards for a reason. If an upwards-spinning grinder grabbed the work it would fling it up into your face.

    For a polisher, maybe find an old, but good high-torque low-rpm bench grinder and make a restoration video on it. I'd love seeing that. Big fan, take care

    I love how meticulous and careful you are in what you do. I've watched some other restoration videos and they're either very heavy handed or just lazy. like with the contacts assembly, the fact that you took the whole thing apart to clean/restore it, on other channels they would have just left it together. I'm always very impressed by your work.

    My Dad worked for the London Electricity Board back in the days when they made these torches. They were standard issue for maintenance staff. They were identical to this one except for the cage at the top.

    The dark green and polished metals look amazing, love it when every piece is polished, painted or coated! Really beautiful! And you should just do a refurbish on your bench grinder, we've all watched you use it since it had that wierd box on it and now it needs some love too!

    For a metal polishing grinder, I used a belt-driven mandrel powered by a motor mounted to the bench. You can change rpm of the motor and the mandrel allows you to get all around parts without interference from a motor casing. Worked well for me.
