GOLF CLUB MYTHS - CAVITY OR BLADED IRONS WORKABLE TEST

  • Mark Crossfield tests golf club myths around cavity back irons or bladed irons and which golf club is more workable. Golf myths are everywhere in our sport and challenging them allows for golfers to learn and improve their golf games with the best golf equipment for their golf swings. Cavity backed golf clubs are know for forgiveness and being harder to work from left to right where bladed irons are know as being better for better ball strikers and easier to move. Mark and the gang test this idea to see what they think is the truth that you can use for your golf game. Getting the right golf club for your golf swing will only help you improve your golf game and lower your scores. Simple golf swing and basic golf swing ideas only help if the equipment you are using is helping you improve and develop your game.

    Mark and crew, I love these almost non edited videos where it's just a conversation. It really brings out the true intelligence and understanding you guys have of golf. It's truly awesome to hear you guys work through things in an unedited fashion. It's very raw and very fun to watch. Thanks, -long time subscriber.

    Yes!!!!
    We’re having this conversation again!
    Thanks to this channel I went with a very unforgiving players iron as a mid handicap and I’m never going back.
    The best decision I ever made was to play tour irons, and not wait until I have a certain handicap.

      I third it. I have far more understanding now of stuff like how high on the face you strike the ball affecting spin, height, and distance, delivered loft, etc. It´s not really helping me lower my score as yet, but has definitely made a difference in certain shots, like tee the ball lower or playing from the ground with an iron on par 3s

    Mark - I always love these tests. I'm a few golf forums and people say things like "you could never do _________ with a cavity back." I have played plenty of blades and cavity backs and the truth is that the ball does not know what is hitting it. I am able to hit draws, cuts, high, low (or not) with whatever club it is. It's always up to me. I don't argue with people about it because they are convinced and that's it. Thanks for these though because it is a good conversation starter on MyGolfSpy and GolfWRX in the days ahead :)

    Where I do find "blades" to be more workable than power bats is in hitting the 1/2 and 3/4 shots just the right distance. The power bats can sometimes go much further than you want with really low spin on those shots. Could just be the lower relative loft, but I also think the springy face plays a part. Middle one and...launchpad.

    Having tested and played both of these, I personnaly thought that the AP1 were easier to fade and I felt that the MBs were too easy to draw. As a matter of fact, after playing these and wondering if it was something in the clubs, I went and hit an old set of i25's and compared to old MP69's. After a few rounds each, I found that my usual miss was a draw / hook with the 69's and had a hard time fading them. The i25s seemed easier to fade and made didn't have a real preference to missing right or left. Makes me think that maybe the blades are weighted in a way that promotes a draw (Maybe??). Really love the content here , along with the conversations!!

Surely its harder to hit a longer shafted club. Thoughts welcome.

    At the end of the day it’s still swing and club delivery more that anything which comes down to looks, comfortability, and most importantly FITTING. I’m a natural drawer of the ball and I hate it because it’s always created a two way miss for me. When I got new irons a few years ago I got blades because no offset and 2 degrees flat. Instantly had so much more confidence because I knew I wouldn’t draw as much and just went at flags the whole day my first round.

    I haven’t seen all vids so don’t know if this has been done! Blades are often seen as “harder” to hit, cavitys as “easier”, I know part of this is to do with off centre hits with cavity backs (in theory). Any point of a video to prove what actually IS the easier club to hit, if indeed any difference?

  • @JimboSRP
    @JimboSRP 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Haven't watched the video yet, but I went from TM SpeedBlades (cavities) to Mizuno JPX 919 Tours (kinda bladey) and I can honestly say there's been very little difference for me. I think my Mizunos go a little less high, club for club, but that could be loft differences - I never checked the lofts. Workability (such as it is for me) has remained fairly constant subject to me improving as I play more, and distance control feels the same too (for me distance control is about knowing your clubs, not the club number).

    It is easier to get a crazy shape on mis-hit from a blade so people think that blades are predisposed for shaping shots. But on a good strike blades are very consistent -> less likely to curve. As the blade head is heavier it is also more stable -> less curve. But it's the crazy mis-hits that fuel the concept of blades being more workable IMO.

  • @kw12784
    @kw12784 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think this is half-related to this, but also the movable weights video. Had the Ping rep come into our shop last October with the G410. He was giving the usual marketing about the weight in the driver moving the ball 20 yards I believe he said. Got into a discussion/disagreement with him along the lines of "if face to path is pretty much what controls curvature, then how can you say the weight moves it. So if the face is 2 degrees closed to the path, it's not going to matter where the weight is (all strikes being equal)." To be honest, he couldn't really argue with me, and I'm just grateful that he obviously forgot this when he got me a G410 at a heavily discounted price😂😂😂

    I can work most any iron right or left. Workablity with players irons or blades comes into play on flighting the ball high or low when I need to. High MOI and low CG make it difficult to do that for me. They always rise up on me. I have a high ball flight to begin with though.

  • @ericknapp2102
    @ericknapp2102 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    So I figured that the point of a game improvement iron is to lose less ball speed on miss hits. The reason I switched from ap1 to cb is less because of any of this stuff and more that if I hit a shot that’s 90-100/100 with the ap1, I can’t tell whether it’s a 98 or a 94. With the cb I could tell you what went wrong to a higher degree even on good shots. I would also get a random shot with the ap1s that would go 15 yards further and I feel like that doesn’t happen with the cbs. Have you tested for distance consistency or guess work with where the player thinks he hit the ball on the face? Just curious. I wouldn’t be surprised if results were inconclusive

    It’s surely about the look and feel to your eye?
    For me, at address it’s like comparing a nice streamlined sports car (mb/blade) vs the clunky but practical people carrier (cavity/oversized head). Both will do the job getting you there, it’s just about how much perceived fun you have whilst doing it. It’s clearly psychological, but then 90% of golf is psychological.

    Think every channel Ive watched has said, at some stage, "cavity or GI irons launch higher because c of g is lower". Thinking about the design, most of the mass of a blade is down at the bottom anyway. Seems like the only reason to ever change clubs is to get something new and shiny. Assuming that you hadn't thrown the old ones in the lake after a really bad round :-)

    All things being equal, such as same shaft, lie, length, and loft, the only part of a club’s design that I feel has ever made it harder for me to shape a shot is the offset. Hitting a fade on command is usually the most difficult shot for me to hit. I naturally draw the ball. However, if I’m being 100% honest, a simple adjustment in ball position usually remedies this.

    I went to Cavities from blades a few years back, absolutely nothing i miss about my blades, these new cavities look nice behind the ball as nice as blades, offer more forgiveness and equal “playability” whatever that means. And if you go Ping you can opt into a traditional loft

      I switched from blades to cavities a little over a year ago and agree on the forgiveness (that's why I made the switch). I got the Forged Wilson Staff FG Tour V6 and they come with old school lofts...my 7i is 35, PW is 46. Great clubs from a great company that seems to be not on the popular name brand list out there. Spin has to be taken into account. Yes spin axis, but also Spin itself. Those clubs will produce different ball flights with the same spin axis. So Spin axis of 10 on club A may curve 20 yds, but would need spin axis of 12 on club B to curve the same amount. Is that incorrect?

    I’ve always felt I find it easier to hit a cavity back higher, and to hit a blade lower. Purely because the weights are distributed slightly differently to either help the ball up or give the ball a more penetrating flight according to the targeted user. Sounds like you think otherwise? Note I’m not saying you can’t hit a blade high, I just mean most people would find it easier to hit a cavity higher

    Does the pro vs amateur thing come into play? Does bigger sweet spot make cavity back clubs help more in out of centre hits?

    Love the 15 handicappers that say "I want blades for more workability"

      I play off 15. Ditched my 2nd hand blades for JPX919 hot metal and, shocker, can still work them both ways! 😊

    Mark, you also say you prefer blades because you don’t want that one cavity back shot that flies the green. So all things being equal, assuming center strikes (to take forgiveness out of the equation), are blades simply more predictable on approach shots due to more consistent distance?

      Also, Srixon 545s in my bag. Forged for feel, cavity back for forgiveness and workability? 🤔

    I think the whole workability argument in cavity vs blade has to do with the amount of offset on most cavities. Most people will look at the club and think draw in their head because of the massive offset in game improvements.

    that is all fine for me... your ability to cut or draw is not in question here, i would be more interested in the result of the flight! Is it cutting/drawing more or more under control with the blades vs cavity backs? keep up the good work!

    Guys do they mean more workable in terms of being able to feel better, ball striking and turf interaction , I play blades and I feel they cut through the turf better less interrupted may be a better description . As opposed to shaping . Shaping is just swing path to face angle any club can do that . Thoughts .?

    My thoughts have been that wide-sole clubs helps you with a straight shot when the lie is worse. Straight doesn't mean unworkable, but i can see how it may be perceived that way.

    I think I could work both clubs but bladed clubs suit my eye when I draw the ball. So I think its more about player hitting the club not so much the club itself.

    Mark-if you think about bubbas hook at the 2012 masters and how extreme it had to be-is it possible that blade performs much better at the extreme ends of working a ball a certain direction?

    • @jalanhart
      @jalanhart 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on the shot. A blade imo would be easier to extreme fade in a pro’s hands because of less offset, and an extreme hook in a CB because of the offset

    I had a set of game improvement irons that I could hit 60 yard fades and draws with no problem!
