    Good video with no shock in the result, what I will say is that your partnership with Titleist and the videos you do together are always excellent, the Titleist guys seem to share your messages, the hybrid fitting video with them was one of my favourites 👍🏻

    I absolutely love seeing this tested out. I play Titleist MBs and I have friends that constantly question me due to the fact that I am a 7 handicap. They tell me that if I went to a more game improvement iron I would lower my scores. I try to tell them that I can hit any club 15 yards offline so I need to at least control if it goes 150 or 180 yards to give myself a chance and they just don’t get it.

      I'm a #7 as well who plays MB and CB irons. Your friends have been sold to by the marketing companies. I guarantee we wouldn't all of a sudden be 5 or better if we played AP1's.

      Yes!!
      I’m moving to mb/cb irons from GI. I can’t stand being 20 yards long for no reason when I hit it well

      I understand what you're all saying, and even though I've worked my hcp down to single digits I've always played GI irons because I think I'd be less confident looking down at players' irons that have smaller heads and less offset than I'm used to seeing.

      Howie Land, Mark has said many times that the “feeling” you get standing over the ball based on the look is very important and I agree. If you feel more confident with a certain type and you see the desired outcome of your shots, then that type is better for you. My only point was that so many people think that someone playing a more bladed iron set even though the player may not be a scratch or low handicap golfer that it is all about ego and that simply isn’t true all the time. Some of us know that we are gonna miss shots and simply want to limit the distance of those misses.

    Enjoying the way these ideas are looking at different kinds of shots. Yet are still very playable with clubs intended for somone who may not feel skillful in their own play. The same clubs can still be totally effective as they improve and exhibit better control over the clubface and their ball striking. Really excellant stuff Mark, these sessions with the Titleist team are making a lot of sense.

    Started with SGI irons. Was having slices and hooks as a beginner. So I always wondered why people were asking if SGI can be shaped. To me, if you can get hooks and slices, surely with experience and skills you can shape it and get intended draw/fade. Thanks for clarifying that one Mark👍

  • @sjgraci
    @sjgraci 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Great information. I really don't see front to back mishit dispersions being that different with players irons over game improvement clubs either. If there is, it's miniscule and the course will always even that out. I currently have a combo set of 716 MB, CB, and T-MB. They are a pure joy to hit and mishits are not as punishing as some would have you believe. These clubs are not only workable left and right but also high and low. Can a high launching, low spin AP1 be as easily workable up and down? Maybe it can but maybe it does it in a different window? What scares me with height and distance improving irons is that you lose distance control. Like low spin distance balls, you never know when you are going to get that high flying knuckle ball that sails 10 yards over the green from the middle of the fairway. Plus, they don't look or feel near as good as the Titleist MB and CB irons. If you lack speed and distance and need help getting the ball in the air, play game improvement irons. If you don't, play traditional blades and player cavity back irons. You'll be much happier and your game will be better as a result.

    I myself have had the pleasure of being fitted by Titleist at my local regional center, and it's really cool to see Mark at the headquarters going over things with the big guys within Titleist and their fitting center and technology masters ALL sharing the same ideas. The fantastic thing is that ALL the Titleist fitters are like this, and they have fitters and regional centers ALL around the world. This means whether your a 30 handicap or a 3 we can all get ahold of this technology and fitting too! I see this from Titleist and superb clubs as well. It disappoints me that I dont see this from TaylorMade, Callaway etc. And if you think this costs a fortune, you would be suprised as Titleist has Titleist Thursdays in which the fittings are free of charge.
    I love my Titleist and I like my Mark Crossfield videos, I am so happy the 2 have come together.

    It was really good to hear it said clearly that game improvement irons can move the ball as much as blades but are more inconsistent in shape consistency due to their very nature. This explains why I don't like playing with my wife's game improvement irons. Unless I strike the centre of the face, particularly on shaped shots, not only is the east and west a big question mark but so is the north and south. My blades are, plainly put, not as inconsistent. Thanks, Mark.

    This is really cool, one of those last shots going around the tree was fantastic. I remember a vlog where you were in the trees and you had this massive draw into the fairway then down to the edge of the green. I tried the same shot once and ended up in front of the green with a chip shot. Way better that a short shot into the fairway and a second longer iron to the green that might not have made it. This kind of instruction is really useful to us duffer's.

    I'd like to see a test of low and high shot shaping. I'm sure Mark can control dynamic loft with both blades and game improvers, but I'd be interested to see if the low and back CG which aids launch in game improvement irons would make them more one dimensional in terms of high and low shot shaping.

    THE definitive video on this matter. results were fairly obvious. Since face-to-path controls movement (remember learning that on some TH-cam channel), once you are comfortable with ANY model of club in your hands, you should be able to work the ball. It's when you're trying to hit the ball straighter is when the benefit of these high MOI clubs will help out a little, as Mr Titleist Rep stated..

I must first lean to control the distance of my shots (straight ones, more or less) before I can even think about controlling right or left. At this point even in my short game I have difficulty controlling distance.

    My only reason for staying with traditional lofts rather than stronger lofted irons comes down to the approach shots.
    Currently I get 130yd carry from a 9 iron, tested M2 9 iron and I was getting 155 carry.
    I would need to carry 60, 56, 52, 48 & 44 degree wedges to give me coverage below the 150yd approach shot.
    In effect I wouldn't have room for any irons stronger than a 6 iron.
    Currently carry up to a 3 iron.

    • @jonathanthomason7896
      @jonathanthomason7896 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you can get to where you can hit different clubs the same carry distances it'll make you a better golfer. That's were you'll get good at your approach shots. Not lofts vs carry distances.

    • @mctayto1
      @mctayto1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      They tend to loft a 7 iron as a 5 iron as in Taylormade M2 type iron.
      Your 7 iron gives you a 7 iron flight with a 5 iron carry distance.
      To me I fear the gapping once you move down to wedges from your 9 iron.
      Currently mine go in 10 yd gaps from 60 deg through to 3 iron on full, 3/4 & half shots
      ie a 1/2 shot on a 56 is 70yd and a 1/2 on a 52 is 80 yd etc but with an M2 PW lofted in low 40's what happens to gapping

    • @mctayto1
      @mctayto1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can already do that but have perfect gapping through my clubs. Can't see that happening with strong lofted irons when you move down to wedges.

    • @jonathanthomason7896
      @jonathanthomason7896 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If a half shot with your 56/52 goes 70/80yds shouldn't a full shot go 140/160? Doesn't sound like you need any other clubs at all. Just 4 wedges, driver and a putter. Less weight in the bag.

  • @eddiereyes4861
    @eddiereyes4861 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Love the info... question though... for me Ive found that shaping my irons 7-PW Im ok with (Im using forgiving irons) but its way more difficult to shape shots with lower lofted clubs... Ive tried shaping shots using CB irons and found it to be ok with the lower lofted irons... I understand skills is a factor obviously, but maybe because of height, forgiveness of the face, and offset can that be a reason why shaping lower lofted clubs may be easier with CBs or blades rather tham FIs?

  • @quistd69
    @quistd69 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Serious question Mark. If a Cavity Back iron uses different MOI, etc. to create a different contact, does it cause it to "Spring More"? I play forged Mizuno MP-54 and used to play Ping i2. Off hits with the Ping (nothing to do with the manufacturer) used to go very far off target, where mishits with the MP-54 irons fall short and are not as drastic. Is there any logic in this?

  • @bennyclare7237
    @bennyclare7237 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    U really know your numbers bruh.. impressive stuff.. I wish for that knowledge

  • @natskis
    @natskis 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Am I right on this though...
    Shaping comes from hitting the ball in-to-out or out-to-in with the correct face angle according to your path.
    You want to still be doing this by hitting the centre of the club face.
    Game improvements help change the shot back to the centre of the fairway if you don't hit it from the centre of the face.
    So cavity backs or even hybrids should not impact if you can shape it.
    You hitting the centre of the face of the club while controlling the club path and the face angle is what will enable you to shape it correctly.
    Cavity backs + hybrids will just make it so that if you miss hit off the centre of the club, at least your shot will end up further and in the centre.

    Haven’t you always said that clubs that help help with front to back dispersion, not left to right? Doesn’t it follow then that it should be just as easy to shape left/right regardless? Despite your many videos, I think many people still believe that cavity backs help with left / right dispersion where I can tell you that I can just as easily slice one off into the woods with a blade as I can with a cavity back.

    • @jonathanthomason7896

      friedgames It does matter if you're trying to hit target. If I have a path of 6 out to in and my face is 3 degrees open to that path and 3 degrees closed to target. That's a functional fade. If I have a path of 6 out to in and a face 8 degrees open to that path it's open to target 2 degrees that my friend is a problem.

      friedgames My comment was hearted by Mark for a reason. At least he got the sarcasm. Obviously it did make some heads spin.

    I've got R7 CGB Max irons and I can shape those, not that I usually want to but it's rare i deliberately try shape one because i know it'll just slice.

    Great vid Mark Isn't this about the fact skilled players can do things, the club makes little difference other then how it makes you feel. I am pretty sure I could shape my shots on demand if I was more skilled through lessons and practice and not if i just bought new clubs. New clubs are rarely the answer (never the answer), so isnt practice + lessons.
