Preventing damage is better than healing
The best mitigation is killing the enemy

Healing is like gambling. Most of the time, you're the babysitter, but every once in a while, just... 1 out of 50 dungeons... You get a tank who fears no god or man, pulls w2w with perfect mitigation, and then you remember why you play this role. I once had a run of Holminster so good, I'm still chasing that high months later.

I strive to be that tank.
At the very least I do the w2w part. perfect mitigations... is a work in progress.
But hey, I usually survive the pull, so I can't be fucking it up THAT badly

I love and dislike them. On one hand, I'm ecstatic to have a badass tank; but on the other hand, I get to just do my boring dmg rotation. The pros outweigh the cons, obviously, because a solid tank makes runs go soooo fast!

  • @Stephline13

I'm a WHM main. The other day I'd just queued up into P11 and about a minute into the fight the other healer suddenly DC'd. The group had a bard and a dancer both throwing extra healing in to help out, but there was no RDM or summoner in the party for backup raises.
We made it through with only a few deaths from people not dodging mechanics but otherwise no real issues. THAT is why I like healing: It was VISCERALLY satisfying to manage that situation and keep everybody on their feet, knowing it could've been a problem but wasn't. I got to use my toolkit! I got to do the thing my class is built for! It can be hard to explain why it's so fun sometimes because if you're doing your job right then ideally nobody really has a reason to pay attention to how much of your job you're actually doing.

I honestly agree with the "everyone should try it" because you don't really realize how tough it can be, even in normal content, until you've experienced it. I main summoner but i also play a lot of Scholar and Dark Knight so I'm pretty experienced with each piece of the triangle so when i'm tanking, i'm making sure to use my mits as best as i can and hold all the aggro, as DPs i do my best to handle mechanics and to snipe resurections when i get the chance (healers need the MP more), and as a healer i do my best to keep an eye on mechanics and spread shields/regen as best as i can when something's coming as well as keeping an eye on people that seem to be struggling to try to proactively keep them up (gotten pretty good with rescue lately)

I have always wanted to play an uber healer who just heals or protects the whole party, but in rpgs it is so hard to do. In table-top you usually just get used like a heal bot and in video games you not only get used as a heal and buff bot but you also have to micro like crazy. I just want to be a laid back healer who protects the party during combat and casts holy spells on undead and then heals the party afterwards. That takes a party who isn't all children like Adan described. Your support, mage, or healer (maybe a warlord instead) should be the party leader, but usually because you don't kill stuff, nobody will listen to you, until they need the heals or a revivify......

I remember before endwalker came out. The healer was struggling to revive everyone so I said, don't heal me; heal the others. (to which he revived the other healer and tank, good choice tbh) but I wasn't a tank, I was a monk.
Boss targetted me since I was closest and I decided to do the dumbest move ever. Stand infront of the bean of death; aimed at me, away from the healer and activate the defense buff before it hit. It worked; I died and the healer got to revive the tanks, the other healer and revived everyone.
Maybe I didn't do anything. Maybe I was needlessly risking my life for them. But a healer's job is hard. Same with the Tank. It's why I wish we had more support dps classes (like how red mage can revive) to help them; if any tank or healer class is out there, on behalf of all dps I'm sorry for the spamming they may do, but also thank you for all your work.

I have experienced this exactly in ESO.
    "I CAN'T HEAL A 1HKO! Stand in the golden circles and the dragon's blight won't kill y...
No that's the boss's summoning circles. Hey! Tank, stop touching the bettles. They eat armor."
Tanking is similar in eso though.

What joy I get from playing healer is knowing the party lives or dies to my whims. And if the dps don't like it, they can re-queue, 20 minutes for them, 5 seconds for me/

As a dragoon main who often switches to redmage to help with reviving if I know people will die frequently I totally feel called out. I don't often jump to my death on accident, but when I do it's in the most stupid ways.
Though with Pandaemonium 12 I saw more healers learning to fly than anything, leading me to backflip to restart

After the other night where a dude pulled everything and then let a mob continue wracking me in the face, I feel this. Like they ran ahead and pulled the next pack while this mob was still alive. From the beginning. I kept having to put shields on myself and tank and was running pretty low on mp and meanwhile the tank is pulling everything else. I did speak up and say, "Could we please kill this mob please?" We did.

    From World of Warcraft:
If i got a penny for every warrior that that zug-zuged out of range and out of line of sight and complained about not getting heals in arena match....
I ended up healing exclusively in guild groups, be it PvP or PvE because they they knew what to do and what NOT to do. Groups of randoms were too taxing on my blood preasure so i just DPSed in pugs

I used to be a Paladin main who supported the healers by healing other players and made sure the tank doesn't die. And now I'm a white mage who just makes sure the party isn't dead while having macro on reviving targeted players. The pain is the enjoyable part, it's not the journey but the weight of carrying the party on your back with the wild knowledge you hold.

As a White Mage I have more fun the messier the situation, but there's diminishing returns and a definite break point. And my best friends is a Black Mage main, so it's always a little off the tracks (you had 3 vuln stacks, I don't care if you were in your leyline, you do more damage alive)

So I started playing ffxiv pretty recently, I spent all of my time up until the last 2 weeks playing dps (specifically, machinist and summoner) and ended up picking up sage as my first healer job. Long story short, I now have a massive case of healer anxiety and feel obligated to say "sorry" to my healer at the end of every dungeon, much to their confusion.

as a fellow SCH main I approve this message. (for some reason I find WAR and PAL tend to do their Mit correctly most of the time, while GNB and DK tend to not, no idea why, I have noticed this is generally the way)

    • @BirdCyclops
      @BirdCyclops  ปีที่แล้ว +1

as a tank main: WAR has ha small amount of OGCD abilities so they can weave heals and mit without breaking their DPS rotation at all
PLD has a built in healing rotation into their dps rotation and a bunch of ogcd mit abilities
DRK and GNB have a lot of ogcd abilities in their dps rotation making it harder to mit without breaking your dps chain in dungeons so i guess they just might either be focused on DPS or not popping them on time

Reapers have an intimate relationship with death; we are good at killing things, but we are also killed a lot. I've been saved by healers more times than I can count, but it's apparent that there are healers who are tired of dealing with me, because they sometimes leave me dead for a long period of time.

I think one of the main issue is that many players take healing for granted, and the gap between a "good" healer and an average player starts appearing quickly. As the tank gets more confident over the levels, and the DPSs have a better grasp of their class, the Heal has to be everywhere and do everything at once. Heal, DPS, rez, run around ...
I play heal as a secondary job, but as a PAL main , it gave me quite an appreciation for the job and i try to be more careful in my pulls.

There's something deeply satisfying about warning someone 2-3 times about a mechanic, and just deciding its not worth the mana. I dont get that power from dps. And while i CAN pull aoe-prone enemies to the casters as a tank, its just not the same.
