Hi Ben
Thanks for being a life saver
I have a 2012 Focus with the DTC codes below
P0715:00-28
P0718:00-68
P2701:00-28
Where do I start from😢
@@tobiomokungbe3649 I would figure out the speed sensor codes firsy
Hi Ben, excellent video. Got one for you. Have a lockout condition on 1,3 and 5 due to a "gear jump" or aomething to that nature. And will not complete the neutral state on both shaft during adaptive test. We just had trans out, cleaned up clutch forks and put new actuators. Everything else looked good inside.
See if it's setting actuator electrical codes or clutch mechanical codes. put actuator A in the actuator B spot to see if the issue switches to the other clutch. get a clutch reset tool ($15 amazon) turn the forks by hand counter clockwise 14 times to make sure they feel smooth. somethings wrong with an actuator, fork, or tcm on a certain clutch
@@BigBensCarsAndCycles will get back to ya tomorrow. Have the clutch reset too, and they spun a nice 14 turns and sprung back fine. Will swap actuators to check, though they are new. Leaning to possible TCM issue....
Hello again. Fork actuators are fine. We pulled the tcm and are turning the drums, should there be a solid stop? Or as you turn it does ut get a little pressure in spots as it moves through gears?
@sillyboy2you yes it should come to a stop. But it sounds like you have a clutch apply issue on one of the clutches. Not a shift drum fault. Did you swap actuators a and b to see if the issue switches to the opposite gears?
Great overview. Thanks. Amazon has the transmission fluid for about $33/qt right now.
Good price, and you're welcome, glad to help!
Thank you for all these videos. I have a 2014 with 185k miles. tcm and clutches were replaced around 75k miles by ford. I have noticed In the summer on hot days I get the P0902 code but recently have had it occur more than usual. I’ve sanded down all the grounds and cleared the code. I’m my area the temperature has dropped below 90 and the code and shuttering hasn’t come back yet. I can’t tell if I need a new TCM or clutches.
@shidderboy hi, that code is electrical. It's probably an actuator or tcm. You can move the top actuator to the bottom to see if the code changes to a p090c to confirm actuator failure
@@BigBensCarsAndCyclesHey Ben, I have a ford ECOSPORT DPS6 tranny. I swapped a used transmission assembly (transmission, clutch actuator, clutch, clutch fork and slave cylinder) I did a TCM adaptive learning and I went to the live data. I have a reading on clutch slip A and B(800rpm something like that) when in park but I don't have a dtc's. What is the possible problem? I hope you can help me with this kind of issue. Thank you.
Awesome video! What symptoms do you have if the rear main seal leaks engine oil into the bell housing?
Thanks. That seal doesn't really fail unless someone messed up installing it. More commonly, the old style black transmission input shaft seals cause fluid leakage in the bell housing. But regardless you would notice clutch overheating and shudder
hello , what code would indicate a broken gear in the transmission ?
Excellent video, i will write this up and keep it as my go to guide when i buy this cars.
Awesome. You're welcome
Hey Big Ben. I got one for ya. It's an oldie, 1998 FORD WINDSTAR 3.0 V6 AX4S. Iv'e been the Only Driver of this Famous Vehicle. The Tranny was replaced at a FORD Dealer around 44K. It now has 164K on it and I have serviced the Tranny 3 Times, dropping the Pan and replacing the Filter, and adding Full Synthetic Tranny Fluid each time. I have Used a mighty Vac to suck out around 6 Quarts and add to full again probably 4 or 5 other Times. That said, I have now started having a Slow to engage Issue for about 2 Months now. It'll "Finally" Go into gear after a minute or so then it seems to work ok after that, until the Next Cold Start. Then SOS again. Would you have any suggestions, (other than replacement), the Van has been a life saver for me, but it's only worth like $250.00 Now. I'am just trying to Milk it along till Total Failure, then I'll Donate it. Thanks In Advance.
I'd drop the pan and see if any valve body bolts have come loose. also check for blown out valve body gasket hanging off the sides. and replace any applicable line pressure solenoids while the pan is off
Very Informative .
Cheers !!
Happy to help!
How can you tell the difference during the test drive, if it is the clutch pack needing changing or the TCM is bad if there are no codes or if there is only a single code. I'm going on the feel of the drive, if its skipping gears or taking longer to shift its generally TCM or if its quite shuddery between gear 1 and 2 its the clutch? What sort of tests do you do during the actual drive? it annoying because mechanic says that the codes don't really define what is actually wrong with the car you have to test drive to find out.
Question had 287b codes
Verified drum stop not sheared
Still have no 2nd 4th 6th and reverse any ideas
@@jayjayltz hi, it must be a tcm problem then
@BigBensCarsAndCycles hey thanks for answering, I forgot to mention I did swap the tcm , still same problem, same codes but new code now also u401 ?
Do the recent clutch revisions finally solve these issues? My wife's '15 Focus just turned 40,000 miles and has had 4-5 clutch "jobs" under warranty due to shudders or disengagement while driving ~40 mph (1 time) the last was Aug. '23.
The newer clutches seem to not throw as much clutch debris everywhere as they wear. However they do still develop shudder after 20 to 30 thousand miles. You can drive the car hard once in a while to mitigate shudder
Thank you.@@BigBensCarsAndCycles
H there, I have a 2013 focus 2.0 focus I just bought shift erratic and has a po717 po718 code. What should I do any how can I identify the sensor location ? Thank you
thats the input shaft speed sensor "a". On the drivers side of the transmission, there are 2 sensors. "A" is the lower one. The grey sensor, not the black. Also, the wires on the connector may just be damaged, causing the issue
Have 2013 ford fiesta, all was good and suddenly one day car not start ant gear knob not moving from P. Checked fault codes and it comes clutch A and B actuators bad. Changed actuators from another focus , no help, changed complete clutch with sliders, the same. Got new TCM cloned it , THE same problem. Do you have any idea what it could be
Find problem th-cam.com/video/TlrCGW_gvJo/w-d-xo.html
What exact codes is it setting now?
@@BigBensCarsAndCycles i found the problem ,was broken cable under the screen wash bottle

With regards to the P074* , do we buy the synchroniser separately or is it part of the LUX clutch kit. How is the repair done for synchroniser
It's bought separately. It's a lot more intrusive of a repair. If you check my partial teardown video it'll give you an idea. Similar to a manual. You could also buy loaded output shafts with new syncros and bearings
Any idea of P1501 & P1705????
2015 Ford Fiesta 1.6l
What would be a good code reader to purchase that is compatible with the focus?
If you have a laptop, get forscan and a vehicle interface. Otherwise amazon has some decent looking scan tools for a couple hundred
@@BigBensCarsAndCycles We just purchased forscan. I watched your other videos and picked up on that scanner being used. Thank you 😊
I got a P2861 while driving straight down the road at 55mph and the dash said “transmission fault”. After I stopped and checked what I was and kept driving it was shifting through all the gears but very erratically, then threw codes P2837 and P073B. Would you think this is the TCM?
Yeah P2837 tells me theres a shift motor problem, so that can explain the mechanical shift drum code p073b. I'd start with the TCM and that should fix it. They're free at the dealer until 2025. Unless they want to hassle you "that's not a covered code"
@@BigBensCarsAndCyclesthanks for the reply! I actually hauled it home today and now the car runs completely fine and normal and all the codes went away except for P2861 now says “permanent”. I’m thinking it has to be the TCM then
Also what spreadsheet are you using there, i would to use to the same one as you have helpful text on the right of it.
That's the workshop manual for the focus
Have you got a link to this or where i can download it
I have a 2017 ford focus and suddenly the battery died one day and after jump starting the car doesnt go in reverse now and in drive it doesn't go past 10 mph. I got P2837 and P287b from the obd forscan tool. I tried TCM adaptive learning on forscan tool and at the select gears point it is going from 50 to 100 percent and again going back to 50 percent and to 100 percent and again to 50 like infinite loop. I know it might be either TCM issue or transmission case issue. Can you suggest me which one is it. So i can buy the required one.
Being a 2017, with the redesigned tcm from the factory, I'm almost certain it's the case. Fortunately it's an easy fix. My new video on used transmission inspection shows how I did it
Aswel as this if you get only a P090C, what are the symptoms getting high shudder changes. The mechanic i have given the job to says hes test drover it and is 70% certain its the clutch but because the nature of these he is unable to know 100%. In the UK the TCM replacement job is about £760 then another £1200 if its the clutch. Apart from the P090C, is there anything else we can do before just changing the clutch as per his advice
P090C tends to cause engagement issues, not just clutch shudder. So it sounds like it needs a TCM and a clutch job (clutch, forks, slave cylinder, both actuators) to have a guaranteed repair.
Yes but by that time, all the profit is wiped out :)
Getting p2837 & p287b car pulls full ward in drive but nothing in reverse. Wondering if this could be a electrical issue or am I looking for tcm/changing the case half
The problem to begin with was a broken shift fork it was replaced and now this is the codes
@allisonhensley9131 wow, I've had 7 or 8 people ask about these codes in the last 24 hours. th-cam.com/video/CYx0564ifdo/w-d-xo.html
i have 14 focus se getting p0902 low circuit is it best to change both actuators i did the lower it was fine for a half hour and went out and u mentioned it could also be tcm as well do the tcms have to be re programmed odes it has to be relearned through the cars computer it shifts but hard into 1st and 2nd more of a clunking once ime up to speed on highway its fine if accelerate too slow or fast the rms revs up really high and when it does that it doesn't seem to be engaged but when the the rpms lower it engages again
Hi, p0902 is for the upper motor or tcm. Put your old bottom motor you replaced on the top and see if it fixes it. If it doesn't, you need a tcm
I have just replaced a clutch and now i am getting an open circuit circuit code P090A, What shall i do next, inspect the wiriing from actuator B to TCM or something else
Inspect the transmission harness to the Clutch B Actuator. Make sure the connector is fully seated. If it looks good, swap the upper and lower actuator to see if the issue transfers to clutch A. Replace the actuators if it does.
@BigBensCarsAndCycles we've allready Swapped actuators over, so is it just the wiring at this point on the harness
Hi Ben, hope u can help me out. Code P090C logged and replaced 2 actuators already. Dealer want to remove trans but i suspect tcm. Am i heading ok?
Yes, with new actuators thats most likely a tcm. Nothing that pulling the transmission is required for would set that code
Appreciated ur prompt answer. Can I buy a programmed tcm from ebay?
Hi Ben. I have a 2016 Ford Focus ,. recently took it to the shop to get it scanned and gave a P2787 - clutch “A” temperature too high ,. does that mean I need a new clutch job ?
also when driving quite long distances the car gives me the “transmission overheating stop safely” issue,. could that be related to the same clutch job issue ?
Yes most likely you'll end up needing a new clutch and apply components. Especially if that's the only code you're getting
My transmission is telling me to stop it hot stop for 5 minutes but no codes.
@tonypierce5661 Did you have the clutch, forks and slave cylinder replaced yet? EDIT I thought you were the other guy. I would turn the forks by hand to see if they're sticking. Check my videos for diagnosing p07a3 and p07a5
No they are new clutch / forks and actual waiters
Hi Ben, I am getting P2831, p2832 and P287B together shall I do the relearning of the clutch or replace the clutch
That's either broken shift drum stops or a bad TCM. I'd run the clutch adaptive learning and see if it gets stuck on the neutral command learn. If so teardown the transmission and inspect for damage shift drum stops (see my partial teardown video) or replace the TCM and try that first
@@BigBensCarsAndCycles much appreciated
Done the clutch replacement and it has code p287A, switching actuators and it appears as it is stripped in the transmission.
Put pictures in my discord or Facebook group?
Mind clicks when you turn the key on and keeps clicking. Fails at shift drum adaptive learning, new clutch new actuaters tcm and came in doing this.
Did you put in new forks and slave cylinder too? If so, any codes? P287B? Check the shift drum stops by turning the clock gears. I've got videos you can follow for diagnosing P287B. If you didn't replace the forks, they're probably seized
My issue was transmission went into neutral while driving.gears would go in and out. was diagnosed code's found.PO7A3 P2701 ,would this codes cause check engine light to come on?
Yes those codes will cause a check engine light. Likely the issue is a seizing clutch fork or slave cylinder bearing. It could be an actuator too. I've got a playlist with 40 of my focus transmission diagnostic videos to help
I checked actuator A and feels good working like it should. not sticking or binding. I'm thinking the ford dealership i took it too wanted to screw me for 3,800 Dollars.
Thank you for showing us your video's they really help understand how this transmissions work. Keep up the good work. 👍
Iv got p06b8 p0430 p0606 p0884 is it a pcm problem or a tcm problem please help
That sounds more like an electrical issue. Test the battery, alternator, make sure the battery cables are plyable and not hard (full of corrosion)
Iv done that all seems good cleaned the earths no change 😢😢

@big ben (p2610) what about this code ?
