Driving the Bill Akin-restored Bowes Seal Fast roadster, built by Quinn Epperly, and raced to 6th place by Johnny Boyd at the '59 500, Thom runs with other historic Indy roadsters racing around the track on Carburetor Day before the Indy 500 race.

    My hat's off to you Thom. I've never felt so nervous just watching one of these videos, but the history in that car, its value, and that it wanted to run, had me at the edge of my seat. What an awesome experience for you. And that you could share it with all of us is pretty cool. Wow.

    Just a word of thanks to Bill Akin. Many collectors gather unto themselves.. Bill has shared his cars,. allowed Thom to drive 2 generously. What a great example Bill has been to share so freely so we all could enjoy them. Thanks also to Thom for his thoughtful presentations... really enjoyed this Episode and the Roadster episode.

    Agreed these older cars are some of the most esthetically and tecincally beautiful racecars ever produced in the history of motorsport, they definitley don't make emlike this anymore.... And I know that the saftey organized side of society wouldn't allow it, but god it would be amazing to see.

    The tachometer is fluctuating due a bad cable and was fixed after we got home...the car only has low and high gear...no third....as far as history...the car was built by famed builder Quin Epperly and totally restored by Bill Akin in his HOME garage...it is very unusual in the vintage Indy car circuit for the owner to do all the restoration himself and our buddy Jim McPherson did all the paint work in Bill's garage..the car placed 6th in the 1959 Indy 500 driven by Johnny Boyd...255 Offy..Joe

    YOU are a very LUCKY man to be able to take one of the greatest Race cars of ALL TIMES out for a good run around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Powered by the Unmatched Offy, in a car built by regular Race Car Guys-- An amazing part of history. A roadster is at the top of my bucket list of cars. My Dad and Grandfather were parts of the Arizona Gang. Roger McKluskey, Wild Bill Cheseburg, Wayne Wyler, and a few others drove for Dad and my Grandfather in the track roadster and sprint car days. I grew up with these guys in Dads garage. I did get to race 1/4 midgets, then into Kurtis Midget, and more. But never had the chance to get into any Offy powered cars. This is the dream!

      Do you know it was based on a Peugeot 4 cyl dohc design of pre WWI by 3 young French Engineers?

    • @63DW89A
      @63DW89A 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stevefowler2112 The Miller/Offenhauser was inspired by the Peugeot DOHC 16V, but not "based" on the Peugeot design. The Offy's unique design had a barrel crankcase and a head setup that had no head gasket, so the Offy was not only powerful, it was anvil-tough and about as unbreakable as possible to make an engine.

    • @stevefowler2112
      @stevefowler2112 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@63DW89A Agreed but you are mincing words...it was largely based on the Peugeot design. Having said that it has winning record unlike any other engine family and I am a great admirer of the Offy.

    • @63DW89A
      @63DW89A 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stevefowler2112 I too am a great admirer of the Offy, for the same reason: the astounding winning record. I am a "Technical Type" who probably does try to be too precise in word description, so your observation is accurate. My point is that although the Miller-Offy, derived the DOHC 16V head arrangement directly from the Peugeot, the Miller-Offy expanded considerably upon the Peugeot design with a gasket-less unit head arrangement and a barrel crankcase to make an incredibly strong engine.
      Now, using the Rolls-Royce Merlin 1650 as an example, the U.S. Packard built Merlin 1650 was directly based on the RR design so that the two were essentially the same engines, even though the Packard was not a clone of the RR, due to subtle changes made to enhance mass production of the U.S. built Merlin engines. The Merlin engine concept rightfully belongs to RR, and although Packard made excellent changes in order to enhance mass production, I've always argued that to be fair and accurate, the Packard Merlin 1650 should be called the Rolls-Royce Packard Merlin 1650, simply because the base design concept that made a great V12 aircraft engine was purely RR and not Packard.
      Maybe I am being too picky here, but to my technical sense, it does make a big difference. Peugeot rightfully deserves the credit and respect for the DOHC 16V concept, but Miller-Offenhauser also deserve the credit and respect for having the technical-engineering-conceptual ability to expand the Puegeot idea into an even more advanced and stronger engine design.

    thats because there is more light one his left eyes than his right. notice the shadow on his the right eye. the dark part is called the pupil and the ring around it is called the iris. the iris becomes larger or smaller to control the amount of light that goes into pupil. so his left pupil is smaller because there is a lot of light on it. the right one is large because there isn't lots of light on it.

There is NO BETTER SOUND THAN A FIELD OF OFFY'S TAKING THE GREEN FLAG AT INDY! I have heard that sound and cherish it as the best in racing history.
    As a kid in Arizona, Dad built track roadsters and sprint cars. Guys that drove the cars Dad built, were Jay Abney, Wayne Wyler, Roger McCluskey, Bill Cheesberg.

    The rod they had stuck through the grill is a starter motor. These cars have no starter,& run on a magneto. So you either push start it like a auper modified,or rig it to use an external starter,like diggers & funny cars. & that pad on the steering wheel is there because of open faced helmets in our day. NASCAR still does'em.
