Dr. Marc Reynolds Marco Hietala had a failed vocal chord surgery when he was about 30. It was to remove a polyp on his vocal chords and the surgeon accidentally severed a nerve. He had to relearn to sing and lost certain registries completely. He no longer has clean falsetto at all for example.
Dr. Marc Reynolds also this is an intermission act at about halfway of the show to let the lead singer rest her voice for a little bit and allow a costume change. They have been doing it like this since they have been performing headliner length concerts. In previous times they have performed a cover of high hopes in the same role.
@@DrMarcReynolds He's asking the audience, if they want to join him in the chorus and if they remember the lyrics. He owns the whole audience here :D I love the smile, when the other musicians start joining him on time, as he never looks back to the mainstage, so he does not actually know, if they are back and will join him.
Thank you giving love to Marko as a singer and a performer. He's the old heart of Oak in Finnish metal scene, and truly appreciated by people who know how much he has done and worked over the years. Many talk about Floor, and rightfully so, she has earned all the praise. But I am always happy when people take notice of Marco's talent as well. He's very much an invaluable part of Nightwish.
Note - the only one that is a natural English speaker is Troy (Whistle). Floor is Dutch (she sang backup in this song), the others are from Finland. The singer (Marco) had an operation on his vocal chords that went wrong. It's amazing that he can still sing so well.

Is this your first Nightwish Reaction? Do more! You'll find you'll have a flood of Nightwish fans who absolutely love to see more people discover the band. Most of their songs Floor the female singer takes the lead, but Marco is amazing!
One of my favourite things from this performance is watching the crowd sing along, especially the young woman/girl in profile as she sings along while she's not even watching the performance itself. I enjoy seeing the love that people have for Nightwish, they are so magical.
I always enjoy your informative explorations not only into the singing but into the staging of a performance. Really enjoyed this journey into this band I truly love. They are so inherently "theatrical," that they are ripe for someone with your background to take on. Thanks. (By the way, when Marko stopped to talk there he basically asked them if they would sing along at the chorus. When they gave him a "yes" he said, "Well ok, then we will do it.")

I've watched a lot of reaction videos recently, and this has to be the most in-depth, informative and useful one I've seen. I especially like that you include the stage production as part of the package. Subscribed purely for the quality. I would echo the calls for Ghost Love Score (Wacken 2013), but with a modification: don't react, analyse. Watch it off-camera, then do a video about the song. Reaction vids are ten a penny and it's very affirming watching yet another person have their first Floorgasm, or seeing their jaws drop, but there's only so many times you can listen to someone comment on "head voice" and "chest voice" and "vowel shift". What's missing from every video I've watched so far is an analysis of the song itself (including stage production). Something along the lines of 12tone's "Understanding..." or Rick Beato's "What makes this song great?" series. What's the structure of the song? How do themes develop? How does the instrumentation tell the story and how does the lighting enhance that storytelling? From what I've seen of this video, I think you can add substantially to the understanding of this wonderful song beyond "Isn't Floor a goddess?" (yes, she is). Then do the same with The Poet and The Pendulum...

I am fairly recent to Night Wish, but have had enough time to get aquatinted with them and all three of their lead singers. Personally I think third time is a charm. I love the vocal skills Floor brings. And her stage presents. The whole group is extremely talented and they work very well together. I like the way you break down the details that make their performances what they are.
There are a lot of comments about you needing to watch more NW, which you totally should. I wanted to mention that I really enjoyed your video, especially when you were talking about the different non-vocal elements of the show and performance. I’m very curious to hear your thoughts on all the song suggestions you’ve already been given. Floor is an absolute beast, and when her and Marco (who is singing on this song) are amazing together. She’s currently on a show in the Netherlands and she’s blown me away with every performance. I knew she was versatile, but holy crap, listening to her as she’s singing on the show is simply amazing.
Excellent reaction video. Thorougly enjoy your professional observations. Greetings from Finland. Looking forward to more reaction videos of the magical world of Nightwish. 🤘
If you want to see more Marko check out "High Hopes" from End of An Era.. or "Isani Aani" (My Father's Voice).... Most people in Sweden and Finland are bilingual or even trilingual - Swedish, Finnish and English... Marko wrote this song and Tuomas wrote the words....
I've put this to a number of Vocal Coaches; however, since she's not a well-known artist (though well-known within her circles), everyone has passed. Diamanda Galas's performance of Skotoseme, with Jon Paul Jones, on The John Stewart Show, is a multi-octave nightmare performance. I, simply, cannot understand how she makes such sounds. Finally, I've, greatly, enjoyed you Nightwish commentaries; they're very instructive. Thanks, and best. :)
Finnish (the concert was in Finland) is his native language. But the thing is that pretty much every Finn speaks at least good English. We start studying it on the 3rd grade and no movies or TV shows are ever dubbed but subtitled. So we naturally pick up English pretty well. Actually it is funny that where girls generally excel at school better than the boys, in Finland boys are nowadays better in English because they play more video games and pick up the language from there. I can honestly say I am fluent in English and everything I have learned is from media and video games and playing those games with foreigners. I did not really pay attention at schools but while that was going on I was already active online. At the very beginning I used to play games with FIN-ENG-FIN dictionary beside me. Never really "learned" it rather than naturally picking it up. :)
Clicked so fast when I saw you did a Nightwish reaction!! The Nightwish army will invade your channel, I would love to hear your insights about more songs. So very informative, thank you!
Yes they are both brilliant singers! Since you started here and liked this with is folk influence, I would recommend progressing with my Walden, Alpenglow, elan or while yours lips are still red Mind you in all of my recs I'm talking live performances not studio even though they do do a good job in the studio.
Your analysis of the song is by far the best I've seen. Thanks! I feel that the contrasts Nightwish employ in nearly all their songs is one of the things that makes them special and unique. When you have this often chunky metal vibe going on and it's overlaid with Floor's angelic voice, well to me it doesn't get much better than that...well, until she adds some rasp or growl in on a phrase later on, just to mix it up.
Very detailed and entertaining analysis. If this is your first foray into Nightwish, well, as they say, you ain't seen *nothin'* yet :). Can't remember exactly where this was in the set, but this was indeed a nice quiet moment amidst all the spectacle that Nightwish is known for, best exemplified by the song The Greatest Show on Earth, which closes out this concert. Marco and Floor have two of the most powerful voices in rock/metal today, and you will get to see that on full display as you listen to more of their stuff. Fortunately, they've got at least 4 full shows on DVD, 3 with the current singer (Floor Jansen, seen in this vid), with another one due out next month, so there is no shortage of great live music to explore. Also, as others have mentioned, Floor is currently appearing on a Dutch TV show called Beste Zangers, which showcases her insane versatility. All of her songs from it are on TH-cam, you should check 'em out.
Finally a reactor that knows his stuff. Great, fantastic, awesome reaction Dr. Marc. Nightwish has many great epic songs. Looking forward to your commentary when you hear them with their awesome lead singer Floor Jansen (background female singer). She's getting massively popular around the world and is classically trained in opera as well as other genres. She did a series of songs on a Dutch TV show called Beste Zangers in which three of her renditions went to the number one spot in The Netherlands. Thanks Dr. Marc.
Just wanted to point out something about singers from Finland (and some other Nordic countries). Finnish language, in addition to standard A, E, I, O and U vowels, they have very forward placed ä, ö and y (which is a forward placed u). This cultural heritage really shows in their singing when it comes to placing of the vowels, the whole nation has it easier in that department as they all learn it as they learn to speak.
More Nightwish please! I don't care which songs since you've done my two favorite choices already, but Romanticide has some unique features you might enjoy looking at. :3 Thank you! PS- I saw you on Sam Johnson's cahnnel and I love you both!
Once again... A really interesting analysis. I love your channel! Please, please... I would love to see your impression and critique on Poet and the Pendulum.
I love Marco, but it seems like you're dodging the Floor/Tarja debate with this one, lol. You know I've been asking for Floor's Ghost Love Score! I would have preferred hearing your thoughts on Floor's amazing vocals first, then do this video. Anyway, let me watch this and enjoy(I've seen it before). Thanks.
No question I’m hesitant to jump in on the ghost score - this was me testing the Nightwish waters. Ghost score has been sitting in my “to do” list for months now but I think October is the month for it to happen.
@@DrMarcReynolds looking forward to it! I thonk you'll really dig Floor and the band's symphonic metal sound. I also second your other responder. Watch the Wacken 2013 video of Ghost Love Score. It's the best performance of the song
@@DrMarcReynolds Thank you! I've been aching to hear your thoughts, not only on Floor's voice but also on the theatrics and stage arrangements of their concerts since they're dramatic, elaborate and just a thrill to watch :)
If you are looking for a trip, either Ghost Love Score or Poet and the Pendulum :) Live versions. NIghtwish is better live, more emotional, and a greater transfer of energy with the crowd, and the crowd giving energy back.
Depends on if you are listening to DPP or Imaginarium with Anette or not. Her performances are best on the albums, rather than live. Love her, but most of her live stuff is poor quality recordings anyway.
Floor and Marco sing so well together not just because they’re both gifted professional artists; but also because they respect and trust each out. Even we die hard Nightwish Army infantrymen tend to forget that Marco can sing his ass off too ..... 😁 💙💙💙 All Hail Floor 💙💙💙
You like to be taken on am rollercoaster? Oh, you so have to listen to Gost Love Score and The Poet And The Pendulum...I strongly believe you will enjoy it
NW has a pretty unique sound, as they fluctuate around in several genre's. Marko's singing I'd very versatile and would be an interesting study for you along with Floor. Both very diverse strengths.
I love your analisys, not only the voice, the music, and the visual, PLEASE react to Nightwish - The Poet and Pendulum Live at Wembly 2016 and Nightwish - The Greatest Show On Earth (live Tampere)
I kinda call Marco's singing "storytelling singing". Since he reminds me of bards. But then he does his metal voice :3 I love him. And Nightwish :D Always have always will :D
His native and first language is Finnish, English is his second language. By the way he speaks fluent English, so good in fact you really can't tell it is his second language. His name is Marko Hietala
You definitely want to also be reacting to Nightwish - The Greatest Show on Earth live from Tampere. I will not spoil you, but I will say that the vocal coach and the stage director will both have a lot to say about it. ;-) And you may wish to set aside at least an hour, since the song is 24 minutes long. And bring tea. And make sure to keep going over the "end credits", right until the video goes to black. THAT performance at that show is why Nightwish is awesome.
Oooh, but something I will say, as it's relevant to it - the song's subject matter is the creation of the universe, earth, biological evolution and mankind.
I think considering the purpose of your channel, this song was just as good a choice as the much requested Ghost Love Score. This might not be your average Nightwish song, but it's an intimate performance that you could use so well to teach others, so no judging from here for not going straight to the "monuments" like GLS. However, since such professional and knowledgeable reactors are few in a sea of Nightwish reactions, I'd really like for you to look into any of the requested Nightwish performances by Floor, where they sing the more symphonic/metal fare. Floor is all around praised for not only her versatile singing, but everyone keeps saying "stage presence stage presence" about her, so would really like someone to dig deep into what nuances actually makes her the "Valkyrie Goddess of Metal" :) And not just her, ofc the whole band makes the show, so anything about Nightwish, please!
The foreign language is his native Finnish. But he has been singing in English since the 80's, so he's been able to hone it pretty natural. Though in the 80's already he souded like the heavy metal singers of the time.
If you want something cinematic check out Poet and the Pendulum (live) and The Greatest Show on Earth (Live at tempere), I am partial to The greatest show on earth but either one is amazing!
I listen a lot of music and in my opinion Nightwish is one of the best bands today. Of course as a Finn I am a bit biased but cannot really name a contender. Tuomas Holopainen to me is the Bach of our time with a matching group of musicians to work with. And Floor can finally match his genius with her range. Queen had one Bohemian Rhapsody, Led Zeppelin had one Stairway to Heaven. But Nightwish already has several songs you can at least call contenders. They just need to make it in the US. They can fill stadiums in other parts of the world but in the US they play small club gigs. Which is just ridiculous.
Ach, You put cat among pigeons :) NW`s fans are coming. Now you havent`t choice and MUST react Nightwish`s song "Ghost Love Score" form Wacken 2013 live show with breathtaking godess Floor Jansen.
I definitely think that if he was speaking in English and singing and finish it would've been harder for him. Speaking in your own language and then singing in a foreign one is not difficult, and that's what he was doing.
Dr. Marc on Marko. - That could be either English or Finnish, just meaning different things. Here the English version is more authentic. For the Finniish version to become reality, he'd need to be a pro actor, and sing like Marko.
Actually he is singing in a foreign language and talking in his natural finnish language ;)
Good correction!!! Well said!

So has anyone mentioned Ghost Love Score from Wacken 1013 yet. Thought I should mention it just in case.
Nightwish Waken 2013 is your highway to vocal aerobics, welcome to the club
Hahaha love your take on Nightwish and also song choice should have known you should find a special song to analyze for the first time.. love it..!!
i love your analyst for professional coach vocal and i just new subscriber..i enjoyed your chanel...greeting from Nightwish fans base
Clicked so fast when I saw you did a Nightwish reaction!! The Nightwish army will invade your channel, I would love to hear your insights about more songs. So very informative, thank you!
Yes they are both brilliant singers! Since you started here and liked this with is folk influence, I would recommend progressing with my Walden, Alpenglow, elan or while yours lips are still red
Mind you in all of my recs I'm talking live performances not studio even though they do do a good job in the studio.
What makes Nightwish awsome? You will be able to answer after listening to the Wacken 2013 performance.
Thanks Dr. Marc.
I love your breakdowns! Keep'em comin'!
Dr.Marc...Poet and the Pendulum next...it will blow your mind...
Guess that was the most technical reaction i ever saw :D
Thank you!!! all of this 🙌 !!! can't wait for a Ghost Love Score and The Greatest Show On Earth video!
More Nightwish please! I don't care which songs since you've done my two favorite choices already, but Romanticide has some unique features you might enjoy looking at. :3 Thank you!
PS- I saw you on Sam Johnson's cahnnel and I love you both!
I miss what Marco said to introduce this song. His words made it much more cool
You say you like performers that can take you on a rollercoaster ride... man, have you found the right band for that...
You, sir, make so much sense!
Once again... A really interesting analysis. I love your channel! Please, please... I would love to see your impression and critique on Poet and the Pendulum.
Ghost love score please :)
This video ended up being so informative that I forgive you for disappointing me, LOL. I'm no longer disappointed!
@@DrMarcReynolds looking forward to it! I thonk you'll really dig Floor and the band's symphonic metal sound.
I also second your other responder. Watch the Wacken 2013 video of Ghost Love Score. It's the best performance of the song
Because no one wants the Floor Tarja debate.
@@DrMarcReynolds Thank you! I've been aching to hear your thoughts, not only on Floor's voice but also on the theatrics and stage arrangements of their concerts since they're dramatic, elaborate and just a thrill to watch :)
cool reaction. i've wanted to see some voice analysis for Marco's singing here. thanks!
Marco powerful voice..check High Hopes ..cover of Pink Floyd..amazing..Marco take this song to a higher level with his powerful.voice. 🤘🔥
Please more Nightwish!
If you are looking for a trip, either Ghost Love Score or Poet and the Pendulum :) Live versions. NIghtwish is better live, more emotional, and a greater transfer of energy with the crowd, and the crowd giving energy back.
Yeah I go for live over studio whrn I'm listening to them.
Only LIVE
Depends on if you are listening to DPP or Imaginarium with Anette or not. Her performances are best on the albums, rather than live. Love her, but most of her live stuff is poor quality recordings anyway.
Floor and Marco sing so well together not just because they’re both gifted professional artists; but also because they respect and trust each out. Even we die hard Nightwish Army infantrymen tend to forget that Marco can sing his ass off too ..... 😁
💙💙💙 All Hail Floor 💙💙💙
Psshhh, NEVA! We know Marco is a badass, we prefer to let people find out on their own after we get them hooked on Floor.
Definitely Ghost Love Score from Wacken 2013 next!!
You like to be taken on am rollercoaster?
Oh, you so have to listen to Gost Love Score and The Poet And The Pendulum...I strongly believe you will enjoy it
See you when you do more Nightwish :)
This is my second comment here, but again I think this is the best break down of this song.
His native and first language is Finnish, English is his second language. By the way he speaks fluent English, so good in fact you really can't tell it is his second language. His name is Marko Hietala
From this very same concert you should listen and review greatest show on earth, a 23 minutes epic journey into life history
You really need to do Ghost Love Score from Wacken 2013, like others mentioned below. It is icing on the cake, a focus on Floor's singing.
Please, you need to do Ghost love score from Wacken 2013, best performance ever from nightwish. Greatings from Argentina man, great videos
Epica - Chasing the Dragon, live at Retrospect. You'll love it
🤘❤️🤘 Love this song. 🤘🤘
I enjoyed that 👍
The foreign language is his native Finnish. But he has been singing in English since the 80's, so he's been able to hone it pretty natural. Though in the 80's already he souded like the heavy metal singers of the time.
If you want something cinematic check out Poet and the Pendulum (live) and The Greatest Show on Earth (Live at tempere), I am partial to The greatest show on earth but either one is amazing!
i realize you have to pause but that last pause at the end triggered me so bad aaaahrhdfgdfsb
Try 'Ghost Love Score' live fron Wacken 2013, you will find out why Nightwish is a great band.
10:10 I think I have seen a Marcogasm ... that is a first for me at least.
Please react to Nightwish: Phantom Of The Opera and Ghost Love Score /End Of An Era with Tarja
Please please react to their "the phanthom of the opera" from the "end of an era" concert. His vocals as the phanthom are impressive :)
My name is Marco, and Floor's my backup singer...
Nightwish - the poet and the pendulum please!
English is his 2nd language. 5:11
