Tarja is great here, no doubt, but what really sets this version of Phantom apart from all the rest is the way Marco sings the part. His delivery adds a primal menace to the Phantom that is unique, very appropriate, and unforgettable.

The way that Marko has sung like this since the 80s and his voice sounds better than ever is so damn impressive. He sings with the hardest of them and somehow it's healthier than anyone else out there.

It would be fantastic to hear your take on their recently released live performance of Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean, live from Buenos Aires. This is the version of this song I prefer. Another thing which makes it fun to watch is the shouting duel between Marco and Tarja at the end. While Marco has to start over again a few times, Tarja finally prevails and shows she has got a longer breath. Still they are both great singers leaving one with a wide grin on the face. :-)

I also think him being an secondary singer, and having few songs on setlist at a time that he really goes ham, he mostly harmonizes with her, allows him to keep his voice healthy.

It is to note that he was deliberately recruited as a bassist AND vocalist, which role he already performed in his and his brothers own band, Tarot. Marko isn't a bassist that can also sing, he was bassist+vocalist in his own band and recruited as bassist+vocalist in Nightwish.
Nighwish, in their very early existence, opened for Tarot and Marko was intrigued by their music, but not much with their stage presence and presentation. Early on, their stage presence was non-existent. This luckily changed considerably into the NIghwish we know today.

Interesting background info: I cannot remember which interview it was, but Tarja did say in a (somewhat) recent interview that when she first started doing classical with metal, one of the bigger challenges was making sure she was taking care of her voice and not trying to sing too loud because it was so hard to hear herself at times. Iirc the phrase she used was "singing like there's a potato in the back of my mouth". I think that ties in very brilliantly with what you've said about letting the microphone do what it needs to in this setting.

Top tier stuff, Dr, Marc. Nightwish's version of "Phantom of The Opera" (2005) is definitely memorable in it's own right, powerfull both vocally and with it's instrumentation.
Small backround tid bit on Bassist Marco Hietala. He is a revered pioneer in Finnish metal scene, starting his career early 1980's. In 1996 he notices some "rattling" in his voice, went to doctor, who found polyp in his left vocal cord. Surgery was a failure and his left vocal cord was nerve damaged. Vocal cords didnt "sync" with each other any more + his high clean falsetto was cut off permanently. He stated in recent 2017 interview that his voice never truly recovered post-surgery, but he won't let that stop doing what he does. A true rocker!
Once again, thank you Dr. Marc for these reactions. They are in-depth and your observations are high-tier. Please do continue your reaction & analyze tour with regular dose of Nightwish every now and then. :)

what i love about Nightiwsh you ask .?? Just the great chemistry towards the fans . The light on stage and video on the background , the great voices , Tuomas playing his keyboard like a mad man sometimes with his eyes closed and swirling his hair , Emppu playing his electric guitar with passion, Jukka who lost many drumsticks because of his movements behind the drums , Marco great voice and looking like a viking with that bass guitar ,Sami was also a bass guitar player in the band but i can't tell anything about him :P , Troy is like a wizard he can probably play every possible instrument , Kai plays a little more modestly the drums but with as much passion as Jukka always did. Tarja , Anette and Floor three women who have left their mark on this great band each with their own sound and stage presents. And then haven't i told anything about the music they make........I can write a book about it, is what we say here in the Netherlands LOL Which Nightwish song i like to hear right now ? that would be , NIGHTWISH - Devil & The Deep Dark Ocean

Tuomas the keyboard player composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their songs. Then they have very, very talented musicians and singers to perform his music. Their songs take you on a ride of emotions and tell a story. You never know what to expect when you hear one of their songs for the first time. I think right now they are the best they have ever been. To me their music goes right to your heart and soul. Their music has gotten me through some rough times. I could go on and on. But I will spare you. lol Thank you for doing more Nightwish. I enjoy learning different things about singing......... :-)

And in this month Nightwish published from Buenos Aires 2018 concert "teaser" (Blue ray is coming out next month). Song is Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean. Just think 20 years old song, they were young that time... And now they are more matured, but still having that crazy energy. How they "updated" that song. It is like musical fireworks, you never know what happen next.

@@DrMarcReynolds I found this comment from a Finnish fan below the TH-cam video "Marco Hietala - Vocal Evolution". Marko has touched on his vocal cord surgery in his biography.
Here is the google translation from Finnish article:
"At the end of the 1990s, Marco Hietala was operated from the throat with polyp. The surgery had nasty consequences.
Marco Hietala, a bassist singer from the Nightwish and Tarot bands, for example, was losing his voice as a result of unsuccessful surgery. In his Stainless Life biography, published today, Hietala explains how, in the late 1990s, he drew attention to the special distortion in his voice.
The doctor found the left side of the vocal cords polyp and recommended that the surgery. Hietala agreed - and regretted his decision.
"The doctor said he had to use force (somehow I doubt he was a Jedi, though xD) to go to the polyp, but it shouldn't be a problem," Hietala says in his book.
The voice should return to normal in a couple of weeks. This was not the case. At first, the situation was so bad that Hietala couldn't sing at all.
In an interview with Savon Sanomat, Hietala recalls that the situation was very distressing, even desperate.
      - I lost the channel and ability, through which I had largely built my personality and my whole life. This could be compared to a sprinter who has to sit in a wheelchair with broken legs. I thought, what I should do with my life?, Hietala says.
The loss of sound has not been raised earlier by Hietala because "It was late 90s, and my visibility to the people was not high".
The story has a happy end as Hietala's voice has been in a good shape for a long time. However, it has required a lot of work over the years. Hietala points out that the voice never returned to pre-operative levels.
      - My clear upper falsetto was totally killed by that operation, Hietala says in his book:
      - Much later from the left side of my vocal cords, was found a permanent nerve damage, that was caused from that operation. That is, the left and right sides of the vocal cords do not sync with each other properly. Well, in the name of honesty: I have managed with them."

What if I have weak little baby asthma lungs... Is it still possible for me to be a good singer? I'm not a terrible singer as it is, but there's definitely lots of room for improvement... Lol

you should remember that marko needs to play bass while singing. If he would only sing he would just kill it.

This is a previous female singer of Nightwish. I prefer Floor Jansen.

Believe me, so do I. However, I have to give this to Tarja. She does the Phantom of the opera better. To me anyway.

What makes this particular performance amazing is the young lady having a premature Floorgasm at 1:32
She doesn't join the band for another decade girl, hold it in!

I know people love this version, and I like a lot of Tarja stuff, but this performance just sounds like a well arranged Tarja indulgence to me. Marco is great but this doesn't highlight him, nor the rest of the band, effectively. It's almost like they were auditioning to be someone's backing band. This isn't them, neither in experience nor passion, and it's a tribute to their abilities that it sounds as good as it does. Tarja sounds like Tarja always did back then. I will never feel comfortable with how Tarja's dismissal was handled, or particularly be fond of the Annette years, but it brought NW to where they are today. In my opinion, they're the strongest and most versatile they've ever been. I'm glad people have this to look back on and enjoy, but give me modern NW any day.

They are different songs. Floor sings the musical version of it, not this song.
