What I do is the moment I input duck 1 I am already holding d/b and when I see Steve do the duck motion, I immediately do ws1. i’m new to tekken how do you cancel steve’s attacks and how do you counter attack ? also i play on ps5 can you explain with those button terminology as the tekken ones are confusing
- Buttons in Tekken are referred to by limbs and an associated number. Left punch is 1 (square), right punch is 2(triangle), left kick is 3 (X) and right kick is 4 (circle). Pressing a direction and corresponding inputs will lead to certain attacks. For example, going into peekaboo stance is forward 3+4. So you press forward, and X and O at the same time. - Steve is unique in a sense that some of his moves can go into stance. By going into stance and then quickly getting out of said stance, you can effectively "cancel out" an attack's recovery, making it safe. A good example would be B1 or back and square. B1 alone leaves you unsafe which means the opponent can punish you. What does that mean? If you press b1 alone and they block it, any attack of theirs that is 14 frames of startup or faster is guaranteed to hit you. So how do you make this move safe? By continuing to hold back after pressing B1, you can enter into flicker stance. And flicker stance automatically blocks highs and mids. Essentially, without going into the technicalities, when you do this, the opponent cannot attack you even if they block this. - A counter attack is when your move connects before your opponent's move connects when both of you throw out your attacks. When this happens, your attack property sometimes changes and it usually leads into a big reward for you. For example, B1 is only a little damage when you land it normally. But when you land it on counter hit, there is a large BOOM sound, the camera zooms in, and the opponent's body slumps to the floor, giving you a massive amount of time to pick up their body for a devastating combo. I hope this helps you friend!
For ppl struggling with Steve's CH b1 combo and the ws1 part : dont get peer-pressured into thinking that its the only way to play. It only adds measly 3 dmg to the combo at a high risk of dropping it and losing out on 31 dmg, and you can see even top Steves drop these from time to time. Which means ONE dropped ws1 combo will cost you same amount of dmg you are potentially "losing" if you do 10 simplified combos instead. If you cant do the ws1 combo 10 times out of 10 with 0 effort - the risk is just not worth it, mathematically. Funnily enough it will also probably add some lifetime to your poor controllers xD Instead, do the same combo but dont hold back after df12~1. Simply do df12~1, skip the ws1 and continue the combo with f22....
I agree, I only do it if I'm sure I can win the round or the game. For the execution requirements, it's not worth dropping the combo. Sure it adds wall carry and more damage, but I'd rather take my guaranteed damage
What's the notation of the combo staying by PKB 2 CH at the end of the video? It looks like after df1 2:1b f3 1 there's a f22 but I can't connect it...
If you mean the last one, it's duck in ws1 into f22 I made a quick guide on it you can watch here: th-cam.com/video/89qqO-UtT5o/w-d-xo.htmlsi=g7i7c4Q4ykg-ropl
These BnB combo's can be pretty tough compared to the T7 ones and the damage aint quite what it used to be lmao. its gonna take me a while to get these new ones consistent. R.I.P Flck 1, d1 screw attack. You will be missed
If you are referring to the df 1,2~1 feint, 2 should be followed closely by 1. Try sliding your finger from the first button to the next in a fast and fluid motion. It should help. If it's not what you're referring to then send me a timestamp. Cheers!
@@soulxcv You got it right. Thanks for the advice. I was stuck on the combo challenged, just tried your advice and finally got past that one. First fighting game and I don’t know if Steve was a good choice, but I’m learning slowly.
My entire gameplan in a nutshell is to check with jabs, df1 and 21, then use 21f to transition to PKB and bully them with PKB12 and PKB df11 and PKB d1. When they start respecting me I use wr2 and stomp. When they disrespect me I take their timing into consideration and b1 when I am lightly minus at say -1 to -3 or if I am lightly plus like +1 to +3. wr2 gives +5 on block and it gives a big stagger so opponents usually do not press there but if I notice that they do, I flowchart wr2 into b1.
If you have the execution for it yes. It tracks better and the threat of the ws12 mid follow-up and plus frames is 10x better than a df12 high follow-up that better players can easily duck.
When you B1, always be holding back so you're immediately in FLK on hit or on block. When you hear the loud boom or see the zoom in, you have your cue to release back and immediately duck in. Hold it down until Steve does a little small hump forward and shouts "HUH!". That means the next button is blue spark. Press 1 immediately then. If you do not hold back when you B1, you will recover in neutral so Steve will be slower to input the next move. AFAIK you cannot ext duck then.
WS stands for "while standing" and is a generic state in which characters are going from a crouched state to a standing state. The few frames of animation of them standing back up is a specific stance and some moves are changed just for that specific stance. We call it "while standing moves"
@@soulxcv Yeah i discovered that . What your thoughts so far on him ? He is fun asf however compared to the rest of the cast i think he needs minor buffs . Dunno would be cool if he would give him the Clinch also without heat
I initially thought he was really absurdly broken but upon seeing the current state of the rest of the cast, I think he may need just a little boost in his neutral. Df2 not launching in any circumstance is a big flaw because to add to it not tracking, other characters that aren't even counter hit focused have a safe long range mid counter hit launcher. Why not the counter punching paragon? It used to be broken because it was safe homing. Now it's only safe. I also think that stomp into auto LH should give better frames or just give us the ability to guard. Having a forced mixup stance that gets Steve to still be hit back is weird for me. I've lost a lot of comebacks because I was hit out of the forced stance transition. That said I think he is still really good. Maybe top 15 for sure!
I really like Steve, this character is like for hardkworking players😂 Not much of a launcher, more like counter fisting everything 😂 I came from Jin since Tekken 3, but in Tekken 8 ma boi is a whole new character... D Jin is more Jin than Jin in Tekken 8 lol😂
So true! Steve is often used by people who want to do big brain plays, it's just too fun! 😁 Totally agree with Jin too! DJin is much closer to legacy Jin than T8 Jin is
Welcome to fighting games my man! Just take it slow and you'll be stomping the ranks one day I recommend you watch PhiDX's Tekken 8 Beginner Guide, and watch a Tekken notation tutorial and you're all set.
Hey man wanna ask, for the combo at 15:12, i can do the combo but for the last "2" hit im always too much on the opponents right side and it just goes over him, do you know why?@@soulxcv
@@nightwing5288 it may be because the distance of your juggled opponent is too far. I can think of 2 things: - you didn't dash in far enough. With the new tailspin system you really have a lot of time to dash in deep. Try to start running the moment you tailspin them. Buffer it by mashing forward. - another thing is that maybe you are left swaying too long. You can drum 312 really fast and you will still get the move to come out
Does Flicker still automatically block highs and mids though? I tested it in training mode and versus mode, but it doesn't anymore. Hopefully it's just a bug, or this character is doomed
I tried to make it as quick as I can, eliminating stuff like Albatross, LWV, RWV, SWY and much less notable but still useful moves; but Steve is just too complex of a character to condense it even further 😄 And thank you for the compliment!
I did a rough draft of it once before I made the final version of this and between juggling reading the outlines, finding the right words at the right moment, fiddling between the menus to get exactly what I want and doing the correct thing at the first try, I concluded it was REALLY hard and it isn't probably for me. Rewatching a small segment, there was tons of dead air and I figured the audience would just click off the vid. What TMM and Fergus does is actually quite hard. Having a ready script and reading off it with good editing like That Blasted Salami would be the next logical step for me. I will definitely look into doing it in the future!
Bro I'm partly Chinese and I feel you 💀 My general advice is to take everything really slow and at your own pace. Celebrate your small wins and you'll breeze through the ranks EZ
@@soulxcv damn, you could delay it for a frametrap as well that sucks, atleast it still gives a wallsplat so the threat isn't completely gone. Why did they remove it tho, other chars have fast natural launchers or good low strings and steve is all about ch man.
WS means "while rising" in the context of the game. However the community dubbed it "while standing" so it wouldn't be confused with WR which the community dubbed "while running". As for going into heat without attacking, when you activate heat burst with 2+3 and Steve is in the animation of showing his fist, double tap back and he should cancel his attack. Hope this helps!
i can do every part of these combos except for the dash 3 2 1 1, sometimes i can do it but i dont know what im doing to even hit it, or mainly i cant hit the 3 2 1 after the dash ( & sometimes when i do the ending 1 just misses) any tips for the timing?
It's 3 1 2 then 2 bro 😁 Another thing you can do is deep dash. Start mashing forward when you tailspin the opponent and try to get in as close to their body as possible so the final 2 hits
Is this from the demo right?

I agree, I only do it if I'm sure I can win the round or the game. For the execution requirements, it's not worth dropping the combo. Sure it adds wall carry and more damage, but I'd rather take my guaranteed damage
great guide
What's the notation of the combo staying by PKB 2 CH at the end of the video? It looks like after df1 2:1b f3 1 there's a f22 but I can't connect it...
If you mean the last one, it's duck in ws1 into f22
I made a quick guide on it you can watch here: th-cam.com/video/89qqO-UtT5o/w-d-xo.htmlsi=g7i7c4Q4ykg-ropl
Cool video.
Consider moving the text higher. The video controls overlap when pausing to read any text long then 3 lines.
Duly noted on this!
These BnB combo's can be pretty tough compared to the T7 ones and the damage aint quite what it used to be lmao. its gonna take me a while to get these new ones consistent.
R.I.P Flck 1, d1 screw attack. You will be missed
Flk 1 d1 will be sorely missed, that move got me so much wins in T7 🫡
On the combo trials, I CAN NOT figure out the feint, any help for a poor sinner?
If you are referring to the df 1,2~1 feint, 2 should be followed closely by 1. Try sliding your finger from the first button to the next in a fast and fluid motion. It should help.
If it's not what you're referring to then send me a timestamp. Cheers!
@@soulxcv You got it right. Thanks for the advice. I was stuck on the combo challenged, just tried your advice and finally got past that one.
First fighting game and I don’t know if Steve was a good choice, but I’m learning slowly.
any way you can bring this stuff to a excel sheet? like bnb combos etc?
Can u recommend some pressure with steve like 21 than peak boo etc any would help tanks!
Isn't Instant Flicker to WS1 faster than DF1 or does the flicker cancel makes it slower?
If you have the execution for it yes. It tracks better and the threat of the ws12 mid follow-up and plus frames is 10x better than a df12 high follow-up that better players can easily duck.
Thank you!
Any tips on how to land B1 ch into ex duck?
When you B1, always be holding back so you're immediately in FLK on hit or on block. When you hear the loud boom or see the zoom in, you have your cue to release back and immediately duck in. Hold it down until Steve does a little small hump forward and shouts "HUH!". That means the next button is blue spark. Press 1 immediately then.
If you do not hold back when you B1, you will recover in neutral so Steve will be slower to input the next move. AFAIK you cannot ext duck then.
@@soulxcv Got it! The “huh timing” tip helped. Thank you family. 🫡
Great video
This is awesome but guys I use ps5 what's WS stand for? 3.41
WS stands for "while standing" and is a generic state in which characters are going from a crouched state to a standing state. The few frames of animation of them standing back up is a specific stance and some moves are changed just for that specific stance. We call it "while standing moves"
Bro I have got to know what this song is so I can sleep to it...
I was memeing when I put this song on 🤣
But I'm glad you enjoyed it! These are just random unlicensed lofi guitar songs I got off TH-cam
Thats not a song nameeeeeeeeee~@@soulxcv
A little late but here they are:

Can you cancel Lionheart into neutral ?
You can cancel that into LWV, RWV, SWY, DCK
Maybe top 15 for sure!
excellent guide. Hopefully, I dont run against your steve one day.
Don't worry fam, I'm not that good 🤣
@@soulxcv and a modest too 😁
I’m usually good against fox with Leroy
I really like Steve, this character is like for hardkworking players😂
Not much of a launcher, more like counter fisting everything 😂
I came from Jin since Tekken 3, but in Tekken 8 ma boi is a whole new character...
D Jin is more Jin than Jin in Tekken 8 lol😂
So true! Steve is often used by people who want to do big brain plays, it's just too fun! 😁
Totally agree with Jin too! DJin is much closer to legacy Jin than T8 Jin is
FLK 1D1 doesn't CH launch
what song?
th-cam.com/video/pQcwoJO013A/w-d-xo.html
Good
❤❤❤
4:16 wtf is that
What do u mean?
Wish there was audio to listen …. Stopping every 5 secs to read is painful
2:00
Right what the heck is ducking in for anymore its so weird
As a beginner i dont understand what any of this means this game is FRYING MY BRAIN
Welcome to fighting games my man! Just take it slow and you'll be stomping the ranks one day
I recommend you watch PhiDX's Tekken 8 Beginner Guide, and watch a Tekken notation tutorial and you're all set.
@@soulxcv thank you so much man - feels like alot of info is hidden behind a wall haha
Hey man wanna ask, for the combo at 15:12, i can do the combo but for the last "2" hit im always too much on the opponents right side and it just goes over him, do you know why?@@soulxcv
@@nightwing5288 it may be because the distance of your juggled opponent is too far. I can think of 2 things:
- you didn't dash in far enough. With the new tailspin system you really have a lot of time to dash in deep. Try to start running the moment you tailspin them. Buffer it by mashing forward.
- another thing is that maybe you are left swaying too long. You can drum 312 really fast and you will still get the move to come out
hey man! thanks dude, i managed to get it down and have managed to nail it in some online ranked fights, appreciate it!@@soulxcv
Does Flicker still automatically block highs and mids though? I tested it in training mode and versus mode, but it doesn't anymore.
Hopefully it's just a bug, or this character is doomed
From what I experienced it's still the same.
The only time I have this is when I hit b+1 and go into flicker but for some reason 10fs hit me
am Starve Farx!.
one two one two one then two!.
This is not a quick guide I'm always rewinding to absorb new Steve, I stand with my word this is not a quick guide I can call it a great start guide.
its a great quick guide
I tried to make it as quick as I can, eliminating stuff like Albatross, LWV, RWV, SWY and much less notable but still useful moves; but Steve is just too complex of a character to condense it even further 😄
And thank you for the compliment!
Steve B tier :(
I think he's top 15 maaaaaybe top 10 if Knee or Heera is using him
It would be much more easier to listen than read....🤞
I did a rough draft of it once before I made the final version of this and between juggling reading the outlines, finding the right words at the right moment, fiddling between the menus to get exactly what I want and doing the correct thing at the first try, I concluded it was REALLY hard and it isn't probably for me. Rewatching a small segment, there was tons of dead air and I figured the audience would just click off the vid. What TMM and Fergus does is actually quite hard.
Having a ready script and reading off it with good editing like That Blasted Salami would be the next logical step for me. I will definitely look into doing it in the future!
@@soulxcvI actually prefer the words and pictures - visually follow better. Thanks for your your effort :)
wtf bro its my first fighting game and for me this guide feels like chinese lol
Bro I'm partly Chinese and I feel you 💀
My general advice is to take everything really slow and at your own pace. Celebrate your small wins and you'll breeze through the ranks EZ
tf is WS
While Standing, refer to this by PhiDX
th-cam.com/video/D58LncnVbXM/w-d-xo.html
Did they nerf flk 1,d1? The ch still launches but they fall flat and I can't get a pickup
Yes I noticed that as well, the properties of the move got nerfed in this version :(
@@soulxcv damn, you could delay it for a frametrap as well that sucks, atleast it still gives a wallsplat so the threat isn't completely gone. Why did they remove it tho, other chars have fast natural launchers or good low strings and steve is all about ch man.
Does WS mean while rising?
And how do you go into heat without attacking
WS means "while rising" in the context of the game. However the community dubbed it "while standing" so it wouldn't be confused with WR which the community dubbed "while running".
As for going into heat without attacking, when you activate heat burst with 2+3 and Steve is in the animation of showing his fist, double tap back and he should cancel his attack.
Hope this helps!
@@soulxcv it does, thank you very much just tried it now
i can do every part of these combos except for the dash 3 2 1 1, sometimes i can do it but i dont know what im doing to even hit it, or mainly i cant hit the 3 2 1 after the dash ( & sometimes when i do the ending 1 just misses) any tips for the timing?
It's 3 1 2 then 2 bro 😁
Another thing you can do is deep dash. Start mashing forward when you tailspin the opponent and try to get in as close to their body as possible so the final 2 hits
