Zion National Park Flash Flood 6/29/21

- We drove to Zion from our campground in Kanab using the East Entrance. It started raining when we got through the tunnel. We pulled into the visitor center parking lot for oversized vehicles/RVs near the South Entrance by Springdale to wait out the rain. We parked and it was only a few short minutes before we noticed the water was rapidly rising. Before we knew it, we were caught in a flash flood and stuck in our truck. We couldn’t pull forward because of the car in front of us and we couldn’t reverse because boulders, logs, and mud had lodged themselves under and behind our truck. It was a terrifying situation to be in with our kids but thankfully we’re all ok. With the help of the other people stuck in their cars and RVs, we all helped dig each other out over the course of a few hours using one shovel, our bare hands, and one ratchet strap.
Hi I’m glad you and family are safe. That is my F150 and Trailer behind you. I live in Las Vegas, we just got home without truck and trailer. We are safe. Glad you are doing well. Juan
th-cam.com/video/y1_vKPW6kyY/w-d-xo.html
Glad you made it out safe as well.
Oh no! Sorry to hear that, Juan! Did you have to leave the truck and trailer at the visitor center parking lot? We ended up making it back to our campground with our truck but it is ruined with all that water and debris ☹️ glad you guys made it out safely
@@jessilong1999 yes park rangers told me that due to the asphalt damage and quick sand it would be minimum week before we're able to get to it.. I hope your family are well and safe you can make it home and your vehicle insurance supports replacement for it. Sincerely Juan.
@@nmbrjuan1 I’m sorry to hear that but I’m grateful you all are ok! Thank goodness for insurance, that’s for sure. You’ll have to keep us updated about your progress getting your truck and trailer back. And be careful if you are able to drive it. We had sand packed in the wheels and steering knuckles and it was difficult to drive. I can only imagine how hard packed that sand will be now with your truck. Wishing you the best of luck with it!
So many people do not understand the intensity of a flash flood. Just like you, many may drive into a location with an inch or two of water and be inundated by a deluge moments later. Water is exceptionally powerful as you demonstrated by pointing out the boulders near the RV. I'm glad that you are safe, and that you documented this for others to learn from.
I was there in 2015 when 7 hikers died. I was hiking in hidden canyon with my girlfriend and the flash flood hit. Within seconds it was flooding, water falls formed on the trail with boulders falling out of them, hail fell and it was lightening. The canyon turned in to a raging river. I will never forget that day as we had decided to hike that trail instead of the narrows due to losing my parents for an hour. I didn't know if we would make it off the trail. We had to cross three waterfalls with a path barely a foot wide on a thousand foot cliff with no chains. So scary. Had we not lost my parents for that hour we may not be alive today as we would have been in the narrows. That place is not to be taken lightly. 13 other people died that day in there car down the next town. I'm glad you all are safe. Always be aware of the weather as that day it was sunny with only a few clouds in the sky. We didn't even know anyone died till the next day but I was praying no one was in the slot canyons.
Glad you made it out safely, that sounds terrifying!
@@jessilong1999 Thank you. Yes, it is something I will never forget. I didn't even want to be outside when it rained for the longest time. I couldnt event tell the story without getting shaky. I would have to stop just to calm down when telling the story. I now respect the weather and water so much more. My girlfriend was crying while we were going through this telling me we were going to die up here. It was so hard but I had to remain calm so she wouldn't panic. The water rose on a section of the trail and created a river that went right off the 1000ft cliff and was impassable. Just be safe if you are ever hiking in areas where flash floods can occur. I can still remember every detail while writing this. I would not wish this experience on anyone.
Check the weather before going down that cannon, warning 1. If you are in an area with narrows, rivers or washes with sign with flash flood warnings, drive to high ground if it rains hard even if you are sleeping, warning 2 from this video. I was in the park and read the signs, so I thought about the weather before the canyon hike, but if I were in a lot at that canyon or along the river, I would not have thought this could happen.
i was a city boy but moved to mo jave in ninety four i learned vegas weather changes fast u can watch it on the in cline of summerlin. thunderheads moving around the vally i skiied utah alot now im back in o c thx for sharing your exp
We were there a few days after the seven died. You must think of your narrow miss often. That's scary as hell.
Great attitude. You will never forget it. And a very cool headed Dad.
I'm from Southern California and not used to having to plan my day around weather. Came to Utah for the first time in the summer, and was like meh, I'll just schlep over to Zion when I wake up. I'll sleep in, no big deal. I get there and a storm's coming in, decide to buy a horseback riding package anyway for 2 pm. What's a little summer storm right? Starts raining buckets on the ride, temperature drops at least 40 degrees. I'm dressed for summer and freezing. By the time we get back the rangers are like hey folks, the road is closed due to mudslides. There's no coming in or out. I can't even get to my car to run the heat because the shuttles stopped running. Needless to say I learned real quick not to underestimate nature again. I now know to plan my days around the monsoons. Seeing this video makes me realize that while I thought my situation was bad, there is always worse.Totally could have been caught in a flash flood.
We from the midwest see fast violent storms often through the plains.. We too have learned to pay more attention to weather more closely depending on your area of the country. Flash flood waters come way faster than one expects. Happens in the matter of seconds. Thanks for watching!
We were waiting it out in the employee parking lot above you. We got back to the visitor center after hiking up the Narrow when the crazy rain and hail was coming down. So glad everyone was safe.
“Debris Flow”, that’s what this kind of phenomenon is sometime called and it’s a little more descriptive than just “flood”. Glad you all got out with nothing more than a story to tell.
It came up SO FAST!
@@TheLongLife that’s what she said
@@robbiefisher1 Yeah that's definitely not what she said.... Straight rounds bruh... #tapout
Wowzer. I was there in my Prius a year ago. Not sure it would have survived this. Glad you all helped each other get out.
I was there during the flash flood with my two children. It was insane! We saw a sheriff’s truck get stuck in the mud right outside the entrance. The truck got stuck in a gulley on the main road. The mud was a few feet deep. It required a special emergency truck with a winch to get the truck out. Fortunately we parked further out and left unscathed!
Glad y'all were safe 💞
I guess that's going to be a vacation you'll talk about for many years. Glad to see your family is safe and I must say, you sure have a good outlook on things.
That's special for your kids to hear you swear like sailor....Good job
What if I was a sailor 🤔💡
@@TheLongLife I'm sorry!
I bet you are for abortions.
@@freedomring4813 No I'm not for abortions.....The killing needs to stop
@@npomojo1 Well then ,go after those people and leave this alone.
Wow! I arrived on the 30th and they were still scraping the roads clear.
Wow, crazy huh
@@TheLongLife Yeah I was only hearing radio reports at the time. I was thinking oh the narrows is just flooded I'll be fine. Not quite. Glad everyone made it out safe.
Glad you, your family and hopefully your truck were alright. Thanks for posting this.
All that matters everyone in your family and surrounding families we're not harmed in any way. Could always replace everything else but seems like the way you're walking around and talk in like everybody's okay so that's a great thing.
We all helped one another dig out with our hands and 1 shovel. RV family's pulled together And helped each other. The men used 1 rachet strap to pull heavy 🪨 boulders out from underneath RVs, the children dug sand out from underneath the the tires, took several hours to get all of us out. Glad we were all safe💜❤️💜
Thank you for posting this video. Amazing to see the parking lot affected like that; I can't imagine how bad it must have been further out.
I was in the Zion area this spring and luckily avoided rain, snow and really high temps.
Glad you and your family weren't injured or worse. Your contagious smile and great attitude spared your kids from what could have been (was, really) a very traumatic event.
Best to you all.
You know, you see this kind of stuff on the news all the time. But, I have never seen anything like this! Those boulders are huge and really do feel for everyone. That has got to be hellava headache even trying to figure out what to do or how to get out of there afterwards. So happy your family and you are okay. We def need an update video on how you guys fared and how you got the truck out of that situation.
We’ll get one posted! It took awhile to get us out but we also helped get other vehicles and campers out too. It was all a group effort. Only one park ranger that helped us all and we all only had one shovel, one ratchet strap, and our bare hands.
@@jessilong1999 ty for the reply. Can't wait to watch. Just saw a couple news clips about it. Just wow.
Hey, may I feature this video?
With credit
and with a link back to you!
any update?
Yes, thanks for asking! Please feel free to use it. Long as credit is given And a link is sent back to us!
A friend of mine was supposed to be camping there from Washington State. When showed up, that flood had just happened the day before. They had to go elsewhere.
Thanks for share another point of view. Wow so sad
Glad you all are ok. Wow, I have ridden my Harley through there a handful of times on my way to Sturgis. Glad I never encountered this.
Welcome to the West. This guy's day went much better than it could have.
Hope the airstream is ok. I'm here right now, still mud on the roads and clean up crews
I don't think most realize just how bad this really was!! The airstream is fine, we had to get a different truck to make it back home.
Teaching the kids the right way to talk. Kudo's to you and mom. LOL
Yeah especially on social media everywhere too Karen
Thank goodness your truck didn’t go down the wash! So scary.
I was there that day ! had just left the area prior and never even saw a drop of rain that day ! was in st. george when the news came thru of the flash flood.
How does a flash flood happen THAT fast??? Jesus, man!!! That's scary as hell! I don't even know how you all maintained your composure. I would have been thinking of dying, as we see it all the time. When it rains in AZ, I don't even go off-roading. I get home! LOL! I don't trust this desert at all, as I dont know how fast these dry river beds fill up. I dont even test it. I wanna stay alive.
Glad you guys made it out!
We were in Yosemite and amazingly had the same storm hit us. Stuck two hours on the trail hiding from hail and 50 degree rain.
Glad you’re safe and well!
I was up in the Narrows with my wife around wallstreet when the rain and hail hit. It wasn't bad there, the water never rose or anything. But it took us 4 hours after getting out of the narrows to make it back to the visitor center.
So glad you guys made it out safe! We we're even talking how scared we we're for the ppl in the narrows that day. It was tough to get out for lots of people.
And to think I was going to go tent camping in Springdale, because it is so hot in Vegas. I got 10 minutes of rain. Duck creek it is
I was just there three weeks ago.. Wild vacation guys, glad everyone is safe!
dang, I want to see how they got everyone out of there. Any more after videos?
I found this guys video, he does car rescue stuff, looks like was there helping to get cars out th-cam.com/video/SthauHWDJDo/w-d-xo.html
Holy smokes that’s just unreal. Glad you made it without harm.
Never saw it coming!
Great language.... I am sure your kids have a fabulous vocabulary
Nothing they won’t hear elsewhere in their lives.
I don't understand why "parents" drop f bombs in front of their kids like it's just normal conversation.
Fucking right!
Glad that you are all ok. Thanks for sharing the experience.
WOW! Had no idea a regular parking lot would be in the path of such destruction. Glad you were inside the vehicle when that happened.
We would have never guessed that the parking lot would have been in the way of a flash flood either. Ya just never know what mother nature has in store..
This is so scary. I am glad that you guys are safe. Hope no one got stuck in narrows.
That's what we we're saying when inside the truck. We we're hoping everyone one in the narrows and even Angel's landing we're ok and safe. Very scary, more scary in person than on tv for sure.
That's why I don't go to canyons much. When I do I watch the future forecasts. Glad u all r okay
We were in Zion 3 days earlier sweltering in 118 degrees and hiking the Narrows. Wow don’t mess with Mother Nature. Hope you salvaged your vacation. The kids will remember that more than a generic hike I guarantee! Crazy memories!!!
I'm soo glad ya'll and everyone else is safe. God works in mysterious ways. It was that sediment and those boulders that kept ya'll safe. I grew up in the desert where there were annual flash floods.
I just have one question for Zion officials... WHY IS THERE A PARKING LOT/CAMPGROUND IN LINE WITH A FLOOD PLAIN/WASH ???!!!
I hope they close that area down in the rainy/monsoon seasons.
I know what ya'll experienced. Our house was set about 4foot off the ground and the water would flow and rage under our home; So that it would at times come up to a couple of inches above the floor.
Your family and everyone else were very lucky that day. Each day from that day on is an extreme blessing. May God keep ya'll always safe.
God Bless Everyone there that day !
Take Care and Be Safe
Glad everyone is ok.. most people have never experienced a flash flood and can’t comprehend the power Mother Nature has… it is damn scary. Great video 👍🏼
Thanks for the language and steady video work.
Holy crap! We just back from a 30+ day trip out West but Zion wasn't on our itinerary this year. It had been four other times, though! I'm glad you guys are okay.
This Dude is so Calm!
avalanches in the winter too. skiing slc w dad we almost got knocked off the road at storm mtn ninety one
Dude, that is knarly....thanks for sharing.
Awesome little film of your special vacation! Lucked out.
If that is a washout area why would you put a parking lot right there?
Bro you have to do a part two I want to see how everybody got out of that s***!!
Dang, mother nature don't play. We;ve been there when it started raining, get away from the river, the park isn't being paranoid by saying so,
WoW! We were there 6 days before ya'll ,& it was lightly raining.. I am glad everything is ok now and no one was hurt
Us too!
You had great timing! Us, not so much lol
That's so wild stuff! Glad your all safe. Mother Nature is a powerful thing!
Sweet so glad all of you ok thanks great video my kind of people cheers
I have set base camp in that area tent camping. Wow, that’ll put a damper on it!
wow Glad every1 safe. i spot a hyundai, a jeep, and all kinds of trucks but i do not see any 4-runners. where did they go?
We hiked the Narrows yesterday because we knew it would be raining today. So glad we got it done before the rains!
we were there too.. made it to the visitor center lot, and got held up by park staff claiming 'a few rocks' washed into the road
“A few rocks” is an understatement lol
I live 35 min from there in Kanab. We got a drop of rain that same day. That's crazy. All the water from surrounding areas goes straight to those mountains.
Got flooding in Colorado City.
I’m here in Zion and it just rained and flash flood warnings where everywhere
Wow you were all pretty lucky I think the rocks and boulders helped to stop you all getting washed away, it wouldn’t have taken much more water to lose traction. Glad everyone was ok, must have been extra scary having your Kid’s with you. G’day from Australia. Ps you should be an Aussie with that swearing ability 😆.
We would love to come visit you guys!
Thank God you guys are all right
omg!! that's crazy. We went there July 1, 2021 doesn't look like it was flooded ... btw, glad y'all safe,
You use that language in front of kids ?
What language!?
Are you kidding ?
@@stuartestrine1234 of course we're kidding. It was a scary situation you don't even realize what's coming out of what's going on it's adrenaline at that point.
get over yourself and your fucking cult please
@@anthonymcafee3807 lol I guess having clean language is a cult now.
I'm glad everyone is alright. Obviously that is not a good spot for a parking lot....nuff said.
Glad y'all were safe inside your truck and not outside somewhere.
Thank you for this 💞 we glad we made it out safe, it was a lot worse than what we had recorded.
@@TheLongLife I can ONLY imagine.
Saw the one IOWA plate couldn't make out the other one but I know they don't pull that crap in IOWA
We got that same storm here in southern Nevada. Lost power for 5 or 6 hours from downed lines.
Next day we got up, pulled out the graders and repair vehicles and all was well two days later
We do pull that crap out here about this time of the year No matter where you go or what you see
you will remember this vacation and next time something happens to you can say "been there done that
got the T shirt. You did get the T shirt didn't you?
We we're lucky enough to get a T-shirt at the visitor center after all the flash flood and fresh pair of socks 😂😂😂
You're lucky to have made it through the Zion Nation Park flash flood.
We are so lucky!
Thats so crazy!!! I'm glad yall were not out in that canyon!
OMG they built the visitor center in a flood prone area???
Me and my group were there literally the day before. We got lucky that we just missed it. The Narrows was an amazing hike.
Same, angels landing was awesome
Yeah we missed it also. Was there like last week
I was there on the 25th, crazy how quickly the climate can change there
If you had been in the Narrows at this time, you would’ve been dead
Time to buy a shovel to toss in with your kit, a couple of soft shackles, and a snatch strap. I like the DMOS shovel, packs down small and yet is still a real shovel.
Wonderful idea 💡 thank you we'll check into that for sure 💯
@@TheLongLife PS, if you can wait, DMOS has a sale once or twice a year. Get on their mailing list for the notifications. The price gets much more reasonable.
@@TheLongLife Also if you get stuck near Zion, these guys can get you out. Meanwhile watching their towing videos is addicting!

Wow. Sux. Glad you’re safe. Everyone had a new experience. ❤️
Crazy!!! We showed up on the 2nd and it was basically cleaned up. Impressive to see where it was only a couple days before. Mother Nature is powerful and glad all is well
Thank you we luckily made it out safe
Saw you were from Iowa. We just came back from rain out Colorado. Not near like that crazy " @ss" $hit! Glad you guys are ok. We were going to head that way🤔🤔
Yes Iowa ❤️ guess we use cuss words up here (North) way more than the Mormons 🤣
I watching your video and got scared. My son is in that park today. Told me they were going to the Narrows.
Im glad you and your family are ok
Thank you ❤️ it was pretty scary at the time it happened
Where’s that 1 guy who’s gonna say “don’t swear in front of ur kids”
This is terrifying !!! Glad ya'll are safe.
Really glad y’all are okay. We were there the week before the flood. That is so gnarly!
Southern Utah flash floods are crazy for sure. So glad you and your family are safe!
Omg, that's crazy... glad you guys didn't float away!
Us too. It was way scarier in person.. Way more terrifying that on tv
I'm thinking to myself, this guy seems so familiar. I see the Iowa plates. haha. I'm originally from Kossuth County. Glad you're ok. Zion did the same thing to me about 8 years ago, the 1st time I was there. I went back many times to make up for it. Zion is one of the best of the best. Be well!
Thanks brother 💕
Glad you’re all ok! The desert and rain are crazy.
That's nuts and scary as hell. Glad you and your family are okay. But man, what a freak occurrence. Those debris flows are common, but usually stay in the stream beds. You'll never forget this trip :D
One for the books for sure lol
So? How's the hiking trails? ;)
😳😱 oh no!!! That's crazy!!! We are headed there this fall. Yikes!!!
That looks like a mudslide, that's massive peices of earth on the move. Wow!
What an experience! Glad you are all safe
Looks like they built your parking lot in the middle of a wadi
I was in the narrows that morning. Thankfully I made it back before the rain!
What happened to the campers just up the road 😟?
Crazy.. I was at Angel's Landing that morning and was at hotel when this was happening. I guess I was lucky... Zion was awesome though.
Wow glad you and family are safe…certainly a trip you’ll never forget!
Wow! What did the damage run to on your truck? $$!
I have been to Zions a few times but never experienced a flash flood. I have heard it happens.
Was there two days before....dodged that bullet! Our initial plan was for my parents to RV in their RV, and us to tent camp - glad we opted to get a hotel in Hurricane at the last minute.
You made wise decisions lol
Wow! Thank God ya'll made it!
I went about a week later, most of the debris was cleared, but there was still plenty of signs.
I have been to Zion twice and fortunately, I picked good times to go. The weather was good not too hot and traffic light.
What's the point? It flash floods there every year.
Oh WOW! Glad everyone is safe! Crazy!
Wow that's a serious pucker factor!😨
Note to self: "Erase Zion National Park from Bucket List"😉
