The save system in Alien: Isolation was genius, and what actually made it scary because you might genuinely lose a load of progress if you chose the wrong moment / save location. Waiting all those seconds for the save to finish while you could here the bloody thing growling somewhere... possibly right behind you.
I think Fallout 3 deserves some credit. Not only was Bethesda taking the reigns of a beloved IP, they were changing the entire gameplay. Regardless of critics, 3 expanded the fanbase massively and laid the foundation for New Vegas.

But it was a good game that found a larger audience. Some of the og fans still don't like it and we ended up with Wasteland 3 to scratch that old RPG itch
The Last Guardian is such a misunderstood masterpiece. People treat Trico like just another game mechanic, but if you treat him as intended he listens well and you form a genuine bond. You wouldn't be able to form that bond if he always listened by default. It's far from perfect, but it's one of the most powerful pieces of art I've experienced.
I came to the comments to say pretty much exactly this. I have experience raising strays and Trico's behaviour was extremely self-explanatory to me but my friend played it and experienced the frustration Falcon was talking about and I was completely flabbergasted at the time. I'd replay it once a month if I didn't have severe emotional trauma from the tower sequence near the end of the game. I'll never forget that gore.
i think that out of the three, last guardian is the strongest artistic statement. i loved it. it felt like a more evolved ICO to me. SOTC is still my favorite, but last guardian is a close second. ICO is third.
I would agree if it wasn't for the fact that the issues with working with Trico are not just related to your bond with him. He's janky. Even Director and Team Ico leader Fumito Ueda admitted he's janky because he was originally developed for the PS3, and they couldn't transfer all of his data over when they had to switch to the PS4 (plus they left Sony and started their own studio.) The Last Guardian is kind of a mess in terms of execution in a way the first 2 games are not.

It's been years since I played this game so maybe I'm mistaken. But my conclusion by the end of the game was that Trico was far less likely to follow commands if you stood on his head. If you gave commands on his back he would look back to see where you're pointing and generally get things right first try. And if that was actually the way that Trico worked that's kind of brilliant. Not only from a technical perspective, but also because it punishes people for arrogance.
The game was truly scary to play because of the environment and what you had to deal with. Yeah it was frustrating at times, but if you stuck it out, you were rewarded with a game you won't forget.
And the anime got cancelled. This thing is cursed. I think the only way he can finish this story is with a book. But it would probably become the New Winds of Winter

New Yakuza wasn't that big of a risk. I believe the story is fairly well known: Saga made the JRPG Yakuza demo as an April Fool's joke, but the fans loved the idea and petitioned for them to actually make the game. So they answered the fans and made it.
I feel like Sekiro is really different. Whereas Bloodborne is slightly different…but the rest are just direct upgrades to the games that came before them.

Metal Gear Rising Revengence, A Metal Gear game not made by Kojima, starring the controversial lead character from MGS 2, and having a sword be the major gameplay mechanic could have been a disaster.
They did an amazing job capturing the tone and style of metal gear while doing their own thing at the same time. One of the best examples of a spin-off done right and it's with one of the toughest franchises to possibly capture the essence of.
How did Resident Evil 7 not make this list? A numbered entry in the franchise switching to a first-person view, with a cast and story that seemingly had no link to previous entries.
I think RE6 flopped so hard that it wasn't SEEN as risky as the other choices. Still must have took some testicular fortitude to bring the idea to the bosses.
I will put RE4 instead which took the risk to change the camera (fixed isometric to the 3rd person view that we know in modern game) and the combat gameplay

The remake to Saints Row was one of the biggest risk in my opinion. I tried to defend that game but overtime it just couldn't compare with how the franchise was back in the day like I'd prefer Gat Out Of Hell that basically felt like a DLC which was a full game over the remake.
The list is more about risks in mechanical design choice, not necessarily in direction. Despite the overall direction, the Saints Row reboot, foundationally, runs the same as all the other Saints Rows.
I really enjoyed the Saints Row reboot (granted, I went in with low expectations following poor reviews, and I didn't pay for it as it was free with PS+) and that it dialled back the silliness from SR4 (which I also enjoyed) and GOuH (which I did not).
Nier Automata, it's gameplay, it's variety, it's soundtrack, it's story and it's variety, all these things could be a turn off for some but for me, it is one of the greatest games pf all time (it also has my favourite game soundtrack of all time, it sounds so unique)
I've just played the first Nier a while ago and honestly, it's not a risky concept at all, it's quite genius. The variety resulted in me never getting bored and I never knew what to expect next. Everyone wants variety in games, right? Looking forward to playing Automata next.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth should’ve made this list. Especially for a Remake of such an iconic game…. I think they masterfully made something that was both true to the original game. While also incorporating just enough new things to leave us wondering where the next part is going to lead us.
Divinity original sin was definitely a big moment. I had friends that ONLY played COD and didn’t like single player games that we’re obsessed with Divinity
DD2 was amazing but your right about alot of it there was barley direction & they could have added more lore as in giving us more information to read for example the enemies, areas, story. Hear most of it from the pawns talking amongst eachother
im super biased towards dragons dogma 2, its a nice change to have a game never handhold you throughout the whole process. the map is HUGE and theres a lot of stuff to explore. im only waiting for more DLC content because once you finish the game and NG+ it gets repetitive
It seems that a GOTY contender when it released,is now considered hard,bland and repetitive. People forget easily,and find new games to play. At least the overwhelmingly positive reviews(gameinformer,vg247 and more) are still there. The game is great and much better than the first one imo. I'm currently playing it and having a blast!

I'm always happy to hear people mention divinity original sin 1 and 2. Easily underrated and endlessly fun in co-op. I ow. Both games on every platform I can and I by it for friends all the time to share one of the greatest games that I have ever enjoyed.

tbh when I saw the catastrophe that was FFXIV at launch and they decided to "remake" the game in such a short amount of time.. I honestly thought it was such a disaster and it would flop SO hard.. Damn was I so wrong. I don't play the game but obviously they turned the ship around 180° in such a stellar fashion, you can only respect that
I thought xcom was good, except they didnt implement the accuracy well at all. I stopped playing it cause of that. You could jave 95% chance to hit and miss 3 times in a row.
I am glad I stuck with Alien Isolation and finally beat it. One of my favorite games. It is absolutely relentless and unforgiving as hell, but soooo good.
Alien isolation is a game i wish i could forget i ever played. Thats because i wish i could experience it all over again. It was stressful at times, but you get such a good feeling of accomplishment when you finish it. Its a complete opposite to most games i played, where you wish it would never end and when it ends there a hole you want to fill. Alien isolation felt okay while it lasted and when i finished it i got this really good feeling and i look at it very fondly. I highly recommend it to anyone who hasnt played it, just make sure you play it alone, around midnight with lights off, with good headphones.
Falcon's voice has always changed more than the seasons. But man, this is the most drastic. It's totally unrecognizable. I first thought it was a new guy until I read the comments.
Dragon's dogma /DD2 is a video game for those who remember that back in the day, video games didn't have lock ok, many save slots, fast travels, and a lot of them were hard as balls. So hard that, if you died at the last boss, you'd have to start at the beginning of the whole game. I love both Dragon's dogma games, issues and all.

I honestly surprised that you didn't include The Last of Us Part II. I would say that that game seems to have taken one of the biggest story risks in quite a while in video games. It seems that your list is based of of risks in gameplay and not what happens necessarily in the narrative part of the game so it's understandable.
The Biggest risk of all time should be releasing Half Baked Cyberpunk 2077 after so many delays without patching it up at all. But CD Projekt managed to fix it in time before it goes further downhill
Yakuza was really always a JRPG series - it's just the battles were real time brawling instead of turn-based. Even though I completed them, I personally find he turn-based ones way less satisfying to play and I'm just glad they're still making the action-based ones alongside the turn-based ones. The Man Who Erased His Name and the Judgment games are as good as the series has ever been.

im super biased towards dragons dogma 2, its a nice change to have a game never handhold you throughout the whole process. the map is HUGE and theres a lot of stuff to explore. im only waiting for more DLC content because once you finish the game and NG+ it gets repetitive

It seems that a GOTY contender when it released,is now considered hard,bland and repetitive. People forget easily,and find new games to play. At least the overwhelmingly positive reviews(gameinformer,vg247 and more) are still there. The game is great and much better than the first one imo. I'm currently playing it and having a blast!
Mario Rabbids Kingdom Battle worked so well it got an even better sequel with Mario Rabbids Sparks of Hope

tbh when I saw the catastrophe that was FFXIV at launch and they decided to "remake" the game in such a short amount of time.. I honestly thought it was such a disaster and it would flop SO hard..

I thought xcom was good, except they didnt implement the accuracy well at all. I stopped playing it cause of that. You could jave 95% chance to hit and miss 3 times in a row.
I am glad I stuck with Alien Isolation and finally beat it. One of my favorite games. It is absolutely relentless and unforgiving as hell, but soooo good.

Alien isolation is a game i wish i could forget i ever played. Thats because i wish i could experience it all over again. It was stressful at times, but you get such a good feeling of accomplishment when you finish it. Its a complete opposite to most games i played, where you wish it would never end and when it ends there a hole you want to fill. Alien isolation felt okay while it lasted and when i finished it i got this really good feeling and i look at it very fondly. I highly recommend it to anyone who hasnt played it, just make sure you play it alone, around midnight with lights off, with good headphones.

Dragon's dogma /DD2 is a video game for those who remember that back in the day, video games didn't have lock ok, many save slots, fast travels, and a lot of them were hard as balls. So hard that, if you died at the last boss, you'd have to start at the beginning of the whole game. I love both Dragon's dogma games, issues and all.
Yea but it’s supposed to be a modern game bro there’s so many mechanics that were half assed and they didn’t fix issues that was already present in the first game in the second one, and yea dd2 is hard at first but there’s no challenge when u start a ng+ they didn’t even go through the effort into having a good variety of different enemies when u go to battal it’s just the same enemies but now they do poison damage… such a huge change bruh💀 the game should’ve been a masterpiece but instead was such a huge waste of time for me

I honestly surprised that you didn't include The Last of Us Part II. I would say that that game seems to have taken one of the biggest story risks in quite a while in video games. It seems that your list is based of of risks in gameplay and not what happens necessarily in the narrative part of the game so it's understandable.

The Biggest risk of all time should be releasing Half Baked Cyberpunk 2077 after so many delays without patching it up at all. But CD Projekt managed to fix it in time before it goes further downhill

Yakuza was really always a JRPG series - it's just the battles were real time brawling instead of turn-based. Even though I completed them, I personally find he turn-based ones way less satisfying to play and I'm just glad they're still making the action-based ones alongside the turn-based ones. The Man Who Erased His Name and the Judgment games are as good as the series has ever been.
The breakable weapons is why I didn't get very far in the new Zelda games. They annoyed me to the point of stopping.
I felt that way too but once you push through you don't even think much of it.
