Ah cheers, Jamie! I always enjoy exploring around Bath and it often has this hard-to-explain harsh softness about it. It's like a hazy day, yet there's this harshness at times similar to a midday sun. Sounds contradictory, but I always notice it in Bath. Kinda difficult to get images at times, yet always pleasant to experience when walking around!
I grew up in Bath. It's beautiful and I'm very glad I did. Whenever I go back to see family I'm always frustrated by how difficult it is to photograph! Hard to really portray how nice it is to show my friends here in LA. (I shoot Fuji too so this was right up my ally)
Cheers from Atlanta! I also love the Defender and in 1999, I was torn between a new Defender and a new Chevy Tahoe 2-door. They were about the same price but the Defender was just bare-bones and even crank windows. The Chevy had every option they offered so I went with that. Now, 23 years later, I still regret that decision and drool over every Defender I see! Talk about a bad decision! I love your videos and have since I discovered you in Australia, I think it was. Thanks to you both and be well! Sean
Oh man, that’s a tough regret, but I’m sure there’s still time to repay your younger self and experience a defender! Cheers for being a viewer for so long - I miss the Australia days. Would love to return sometime soon!
The light in Bath is indeed very special! I went to Uni in Bath and lived in a number of places around the city for over 8 years. It’s still my favourite place despite now living in Australia. It is the place I became my own person and will always have a special place in my heart. Thanks for this wonderful trip down memory lane, Joe, I recognised almost every corner and street you visited!
Beautiful vlog and images, Joe. I’m excited watching because we’re in the UK in June and I’m anxious to visit some of these locations. Do you prefer taking portrait vs landscape perspectives? Portrait photos tend to be more difficult for me.
Thanks! June’s a great month to visit, especially with the longer daylight hours. I’m definitely drawn towards vertical shooting. I just find myself naturally doing it a lot.
Bath certainly is in the Cotswolds, right outside the bath abbey on the floor you can see an iron plaque that marks the start/end of Cotswolds Way, which is a popular walk within the Cotswolds.
As another photographer and TH-camr Ted Vieira said. "You never know the life of photograph." One of these days someone will say "wow look at all those cool old cars." I get it though. It does date them.
Yep, I think about this concept every single time the cars bother me! But I always struggle to convey it succinctly. I often wonder about the idea of classic cars in images; if they were seen to be problematic at the time the photo was taken, or if they're only more pleasing now because of the age/date they show. There are three major things I think that set things differently to today towards a negative. 1st, the overall design of cars these days feature more shapes and variety of colours, than the more common boxy and rigid angles of old times, which just feels out of place to older buildings and construction styles. In many subtle ways, I think our brains can tell when two things were made in a similar era and that gives it better cohesion. 2nd, the size of most cars has increased over the decades, sometimes eclipsing the ground floor to an old cottage. And finally, the sheer number of cars on the roads these days is extreme, along with their required road markings and signage cluttering up my photos haha! Interestingly, it's only in the last couple of years I've realised that on-street parking is actually very rare in Japan, which likely adds up to why I'm so drawn to many of the roads and alleyways when I'm there.
@@joeallam I don't know how to get around it either. I shoot a lot of black and white and it's timeless nature can sometimes help tone down some of the distractions. It won't reduce their size and shape in the frame , but it makes them less conspicuous. Then again the juxtaposition of old and new is something we can play with if it's effective. I admit to being a little jealous of your time in Japan. My wife and I have had to cancel our first trip to Japan twice now with the pandemic. Lately I've been enjoying night photography and I can't wait for all of the neon Tokyo has to offer. Keep up the great work and enjoy your travels!
Lovely stuff Joe.. You don't have to worry about the parked cars... You are right that modern cars shot against old buildings kind of ruin the retro look or style of the architecture but my advice is to try to think of it differently... Try to see them from another perspective that some 30 years or so from now today's cars would be part of the history and your shots would be esthetically vintage...
Haha, yeah they’re some of the most maintenance heavy vehicles, which is also why I’d quite enjoy simplifying it to an EV. On the flip side, given how notorious they are for breaking, there’s a huge community of support backing it all up!
Yep! I’ve left my camera on raw+JPG since I started playing with the recipes last summer. Makes the viewfinder experience a bit more interesting and gives me some images I can share quickly to social if I need.
Ah, my home town. The light here is so good. The way it bounces off the golden stonework is beautiful.

I always forget how pretty Bath is! Great shots, and another nice chill vlog, thanks Joe and Elly!
Lovely vibes on these vlogs. Great shots too!
Thank you for your Travel Vlog to bring us to many different beautiful places in the world. I am really enjoying.
WoW. Thanks for chasing the light! Very inspiring.

My local city location! Always great to see someone else's take. Chasing the light in Bath is always fun. Cracking shots as always.
Absolutely! I think the stone buildings really absorb the light on days like these. Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you VLOG for always making me feel good
Positive vibes only! Glad you enjoyed it!
Enjoyed watching with a cuppa, great stuff Joe. Bath looks lovely👌

Another fantastic vlog Joe & Elly! Your UK photography spots are essentially on our list to goto when we travel to the UK (hopefully this year)
Cheers - Glad to hear it’s helping with planning! The summer months are great for long daylight hours and hopefully warmer weather!
Thomas Heaton brought me here last week. I will stay here. Very sympathic personality and like your photography style.
Ah excellent! Welcome to the community; I hope you enjoy the videos!
Wicked vlog, Joe! Stunning set of images. My cardio level would have struggled with those inclines hahaha...
Cheers man! I always wonder what extra fitness I’m gaining from carrying camera bags and walking everywhere haha

That's so much fun, chasing the light, hi Elly, must return to Bath sometime, great video, as always Joe, all the best guys.
I always enjoy returning to Bath - it’s got such a charm to it!
Thanks Joe.
Some beautiful shots. So much of the architecture reminds me of Hobart.
Ah good to hear! We never made it down to Tassie when we lived in Melbourne, but had friends who lived there and loved it!
Ahh Camden is about 2 minutes from where I live, refreshing to see it with new eyes. Cheers Joe.
Ah amazing! It’s a beautiful part of the city!

Golden Hour in Bath should be called Super Golden Hour since you have all that golden Bath stone that gets better every minute.
Hi!! Which lens did you use in this video ?
The Royal Crescent is perfect for finding great cars.
You visited the street where I live - 8 seconds in!
I’m not far from Bath, I’m from Gloucester.
wow. I did my PhD from University of Bath. A beautiful city :)
Amazing! Bath is a pretty prestigious Uni - I hope you enjoyed it!
Palm trees in Bath? Didn't see that coming.
Talk to Brendan about Defenders

I always had the same dream of owning a classic Land Rover but If you watch Eva zu Beck or Ben Brown videos, those are the most unreliable cars ever 🤣

245k subscribers, 2 pound each... Welcome to the new Joe home build TH-cam series 😂
Ha! We might have to work a bit more on the business model first…
Do you still use JPEG Recipes?
Yep! I’ve left my camera on raw+JPG since I started playing with the recipes last summer. Makes the viewfinder experience a bit more interesting and gives me some images I can share quickly to social if I need.
