Best 12 seconds I've spent on youtube this week. Thanks!
😂
I added the MHG-XT metal hand grip and a thumb rest to my XT-3. It makes the camera very comfortable to hold.
You made a good choice - 50mm is the angle that our eyes see in real life. I don't get why photographers don't use wrist strap especially if they have expensive camera.
Just stumbled across this channel. A fascinating couple of videos and, I have to say, some of your images are reminiscent of some of the great names. Keep up the good work!
Hey Allan! That’s such a nice comment, much appreciated. Glad you’re enjoying the videos 🙏🏻
Thanks Tim. I am retired and currently studying photography full time at Dayton State Collage in Florida. I have taken the plunge and invested in the Canon RF system with the holy trinity L series lenses. I first became interested in street photography when I took a single introduction class at Georgia State University in the early 80s. I still have my Canon AE1, and it is in excellent working condition. Until watching your video I was prepared to make an investment in something less intrusive just for my street work. I just returned from a month in Yorkshire where I practiced street work in Harrogate. The L lenses drew a lot of unwanted attention and comments. After watching this video, I am going to hit the streets with my Canon t3i Rebel and that faithful AE1. What savings. Many thanks for all of your tutorials.
My pleasure! Sounds like a great idea and a smaller, more discrete set up is always a solid choice for street photography. Street photography is such a wonderful hobby to have, awesome to hear it’s keeping you busy in retirement! 🙏🏻
Great video Tim.
Thanks, Pam! 🙏🏻
Good video and great photos! Thanks!
Thanks heaps!
On the verge of dipping my toe into street photography! As a committed Nikon user (Z8 & Z50) I find the "baby" Z50 (yes, with a PD wrist strap) ideal to use when you just want a camera to be at the ready, e.g. at summer fairs and shows etc. Just got hold of the Viltrox 56mm and looking forward to giving it a test run!
I'm a relative newcomer to your channel but the videos I've watched so far are proving to be a great help in planning how best to tackle street photography when I retire in a few weeks. Thanks!
Happy to hear that! Enjoy, street photography is so much fun 🙏🏻
I don’t normally watch ‘gear’ videos, but as it was you, I did! Another useful video Tim.
Thanks Patricia! Don’t worry my channel is not going to turn to the dark side (review videos 😂) - just wanted to put something out there I can refer beginners too when they have questions about gear
The sigma lenses are a great option.Especially the 56 f1.4
I hear great things! Might pick one up to test when it gets to winter and more night street photography 👌🏻
I use my Fujifilm X-T3 and the 35mm f/2 and the 27mm f/2.8, i have a Viltrox 56mm f/1.4 for the night time. I totally agree with the Peak Design wrist strap.
Great set up!
Great images, congrats.
Thanks a lot mate!
Okay, so did actually laugh at the phone intro haha!
I love the essence of this video, Tim - particular highlighting that passion is most important, but sharing some of the more essentials to compliment that.
Haha thanks mate! Almost didn’t include but did in the end ha - glad you enjoyed it! A bit of a ‘boring’ video content wise unless into gear but wanted to make one to help people out with gear as it’s a common question!
@@timjamiesonphotos Haha glad it made the cut, mate! And still really really interesting to watch. Kind of like "failing to plan is planning to fail".. getting those foundations and tools in order, sets everything up! :)
I love my XE-4. I chose that over the X100V because I don't want to be stuck with only one lens, I prefer being able to switch lenses when I fancy it. Have the same wrist strap and it's been a godsend.
I do like the recommendation for people starting off to simply use their phone cameras for a while and experiment with them, too many people feel they have to dive in and buy expensive gear to take great pics, when in reality if you're just starting your photography journey it's more important to get the basics down. And have fun, too, I think a lot of us forget that sometimes (myself included).
Yeah 100% agree! I love the X-E4 too. If it just had weather sealing and the same screen as the X-T5 it (and maybe a better grip) it would pretty much be my perfect camera.
And yeah, no point trying to get good at street photography by buying gear. Try it first, you like it, then invest in some gear. In my humble opinion
Loved the video! To your point I have the 23, 35, and 50 f2 lenses and found that to be too much. I purchased the 27 f2.8 pancake which has essentially been welded to my XPro3. I no longer bother myself with the decision of what to bring and instead just grab and go
Thanks Adam! Appreciate that mate. I almost bought the 27, but I’m thinking of getting the Ricoh GRiii x at some point!
Totally agree on backpack over sling, better distribution of weight and water bottle holder.
I really love my Brevite Jumper.
Can I also add sunscreen to the boring stuff to bring?
Been sunburnt too many times on afternoon walks 😂.
Mate, such a good shout. I’ve been caught in the sun without sunscreen many a time before too haha - should live in the bag. Sunscreen travel hack: pick up a kids roll-on sunscreen for easy application and no sticky hands for the camera - discovered that in Morocco 😆
Concise, to the point, practical advice, Tim. Well paced and illustrated variant of “my bag” theme. Budget, ergonomics, and best lens to match eye “field of view” spot on.
Have you ever performed a Lightroom metadata search to determine which lens(es) you used for most shots?
Blending into environment is important, IMO, so I prefer a do-it-yourself repurposed canvas surplus army gas mask bag - cut up yoga mat makes good dividers - 1 body, 2 lenses plus small stuff.
BTW, Tim, congrats on having e-mag “Depth of Field” cover your earlier post “Getting More Creative With Photography In a Small City”.👍 That kind of exposure should really help boost channel views and subs. Cheers!
Thank you for your kind comment, Paul! It’s comments like that which really keep the motivation going and keep me wanting to make videos, so thanks again!
But yeah, by far and away my most used focal length is 35mm (so 50mm full frame equivalent). Sounds like you’ve got a great set up for your bag too!
I'm using my XT-2 with 23mm f2 for street photo and Love this combo. I'm currently working in a project. Btw, I Don't Feel the Need to upgrade to XT-5, I don't Need High megapixels or videos features, also the build quality of XT-5 is NOT comparable with XT-2 Made in Japan.
I keep looking at Fujifilm, but I have a ton of money invested in my Olympus system. Loved your video!
Thanks mate! Fuji are great but so is Olympus, can make great street shots with any camera when you develop eye and creativity :)
Haha, I'm still at your intro stage with my photography! 😂 Great video Tim 👍xx
🤭
I have the Ricoh GRIII which is compact enough to slip into my pants pocket. No need for a camera bag or even a sling. It's size means it does not stand out and you can use the screen on the back to take my shots without the need to press the shutter button, which means taking photographs is more discrete.
Comes with its own WiFi which mean I can use an app on my mobile to upload my photographs to the cloud.
As minimalist street photography goes it is hard to beat.
That’s why I mentioned it in the video 😆
The best lens, personal opinion, is a nifty fifty with a DSLR. Its fast with great depth of field to isolate the subject and details to tell a story in the image. I prefer to use a point and shoot camera because it can be discreet. My camera of choice is a Lumix TZ90, its compact, set the focal length and can dial in the settings I want.
Yeah 100% - 50mm focal length is by far my favourite!
DSLRS are passé. 50mm with smaller, quieter mirrorless is the ticket.
When I left Nikon in 2017 I didn't have an immediate answer to fill the hole of "pro APS-C camera" (NIkon stopped making them post-DSLR) and as primarily a concert photographer APS-C is really important to me. But I was a bit burned out from work and welcomed the break, I was already interested in Fujifilm though, but I couldn't tolerate that the X-T1 only had one SD slot. Still, in that time frame I DID invest in a Peak Design 15" Messenger bag and the capture clip and they've been my best camera related purchases ever. And in the end I caved and bought a used X-T1 (price was right) and an X-T3 when that came out. Now I shoot on X-T5. Anyway, the point: Don't get a good bag. Get a GREAT bag.
Sounds like a great set up man! I would really like an X-T5 but 💵💵💵
I chose the GR over the Fujifilm because of how easily it fits in my jeans pocket. I absolutely always have it with me.
👍🏻
My current street photography set up is the Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-F4 on my Nikon D5500 alongside my Tamron 18-200mm lens and Youngnou 50mm and 35mm lenses I intend to purchase the Youngnou 85mm lens for my Nikon D5500
Sounds good!
You can change focal lengths on the Gr digital system. I regularly change from 28 mm equivalent to 21mm with a converter lens.
I also use a Nikon D300s with a 24mm f2.8 afd lens, very rapid autofocus and 35mm equivalent.
You cannot change lenses with the Ricoh which is what I said in my video. Sure you can add an adapter and converter lens but that’s limited, I can’t get all the focal lengths I want and if you’re buying a Ricoh for compactness what’s the point of screwing on a lens.
Ok , enjoy what you like. It's a (reasonably) free world.
Damn you Tim 😂 … I’ve just purchased a used 50mm f2 on the plus side it could have been a Leica Q2 Monochrom! Useful video, thanks …
Haha yeah, at least I didn’t recommend a Leica 😅. Enjoy it mate! 🙏🏻
good video… cheers
Thanks 👍
cool Video Tim, With the Ricoh GR 3 you do not need "any" bag at all. This is the reason why It's "the" Street Camera. Except a Leica of course 🙂
For sure. I’m definitely intrigued by the Ricoh cameras, but I think they would be a bit too restrictive for me. Might pick one up in the future. Now a Leica, not sure I’ll ever get one of those! 😂
The 35mm and 50mm lenses can do everything, the 50mm is my favorite.
They are both great lenses!
got the xt-2 also - along w/ t3, and h2 recently - but I always take my xt-2 with me because it's so not so expensive now and it does everything.
but I don't know why no one talkes about the 16-50 OIS-II. It is darn cheap and tack sharp at f5.6 or f6.3 - and it is so lightweight!
On my last holiday I just took the t2, that 16-50 plus a Viltrox 23/1.4 -- and I can carry everything either in my normal daypack or in a very in-expensive messenger bag.
Just one more thing: I recently picked up an Olympus PEN-F and 17/1.8, both second hand, and they also fit nicely in my messenger back. It's the ideal street photography kit! - Any other Pen or a Lumix G.. would do that, too.
Sounds great! And yeah those light Fuji XC lenses are a great budget option, especially for beginners :)
@@timjamiesonphotos absolutely! And I bought a 18-50 2/8-4.0 just to find out the XC 16-50 is even sharper @ 5.6 --- for wide open, I've got prime lenses @ 23/35/50mm --> so I gave back the 18-50.
Funny about wotancraft. i just got a wotancraft 7L sling on monday to replace my peak design, i never even heard about the company until 2 weeks ago. it is really a great bag though.
now that you switch to the iphone, i will pick up your new 23 if you make me a good price ;)
Yeah they are a solid brand! A bit on the pricey side but there are quality. I use the one I mentioned in this video all the time. And haha I’m not quite an iPhone only photographer just yet 😆
Great video man! Which len do you recommend for a Sony ZVE10?
Thanks! Depends on what kind of images you want to make, I’d either get a kit zoom lens or a fast prime lens like a 35mm or 50mm full frame equivalent :)
I like your photos very much, I'm inspired📸 Did you used some filters to your lense?
Thanks! No I don’t use filters :)
sorry wrong channel… good video, cheers
What do you mean?
@@timjamiesonphotos hey Tim, i put a comment from my dog's channel "Dave" first... not my main channel... anyways... good video and good photography... keep up the good work
cheers, Carlos
Used X-E4 way expensive than new one in these days, If you can find the new one though. New one was $849 when available, today used one is around $1200-$1400 on MPB. This is insane.
Yeah, crazy how the prices are going for Fuji xe4 and x100v
You absolutely don't need 3 primes so close in focal. My suggestion for beginners is (in FF equivalent): 24 ( ultra wide for street is difficult to master, but amazing), 35 for snapshots in zone focusing and 85 for everything else. If just 2: 35 and 85.
That’s exactly what I say in the video
@@timjamiesonphotos wise guy
No, completely wrong. To be a street photographer you MUST only use Leica 😂😂
I jest, great advice Tim, honestly the gear is of secondary concern sure having the right gear can help but it absolutely won't help you see a shot, read a scene or just the light.
And using a phone, 100% a legit tool I have captured so great, off the cuff, shots using my phone because it's with me most of the time.
Haha not gonna lie, if I could afford it, I’d probably be shooting on a Leica 😂
I’m planning to get some cheap clip on lenses for my phone and doing a video with it for street photography, I’m intrigued as to what I could get with it!
When I go out at night I use a 35mm on my APS-C camera, because of its f2 aperture. During the day I put the 18-55mm on. I use the zoom lens like it's two primes; I only shoot at either 28 or 55mm. I haven't tried 24mm, I may have to give that a try.
Nice one! Sounds like a solid set up 👌🏻
Okay, I just gotta comment.. I see too many TH-camr folks not know how to put a lav on properly. You gotta point it upwards towards your face. I know it's tricky to do because the clip design is stupid and meant for suit jackets you can clip horizontally rather than t-shirts, but if you loop the cable into the clip and turn it all upwards, it'll give you way better lav audio.
Sorry, it's just as someone who's worked in film/TV for 20yrs and even had to put a lav on people for my own projects, it drives me a bit nuts when I see it and it's so prominent in frame to me ;)
Works fine for me as is 👍🏻
If you can't hold and easily use a camera, all other considerations are irrelevant. The digital cameras with menus are simply too painful to use for many of us with arthritis in our fingers. I use a 1970's SLR with no automated features. Bracketing exposures provides light control. Composition choice and choosing an appropriate moment and cropping are all that I need.
Valid point :)
Holy crap, you have been to China?! YinChuan, I saw this city's name on the bus body. I'm sorry I didn't watch this video before, I was patronizing to watch your POV vedio. Which cities in China have you been to? Have you been to Xinjiang and Tibet? The mountains, grasslands, lakes, rivers, animals, and humanities there are all very, very good and beautiful!!
Hey, yeah I lived in China for almost 3 years :). Yinchuan and Ningbo are the cities I lived. I’ve been all over the country - I loved it there
Tim can i ask aswell if you did a degree ?
Hey, I did a degree about 100 years ago and it wasn’t related to photography haha , why do you ask?
@@timjamiesonphotos thankyou for the response bro. I ask because I’m currently touring SEA (Vietnam at the mo) and debating coming home to study our shared passion or not. But I’m definitely leaning towards the learn on the job option 😂thanks again tim big love
The problem with using a phone for photography of any kind is that you don't really learn anything about using a camera or photography in general, if you are talking photos with a phone and say that you would like to move to a proper cameras chances are you will look at the camera and say holy crap what are all these buttons and dials, what do all these little symbols mean and you have to edit files it's above my pay grade. Well take a deep breath and relax it can be done. When I started I had to learn how to use a computer, digital cameras, editing and printing , this will not happen overnight but as I said l went for knowing very little about digital photography to photographing wildlife and landscapes and latter events including weddings. I have sold and framed prints and supplied every client that I photographed events for prints
Yeah totally agree with you on the phone! A budget camera works fine though and award winning photos can be taken with lots of practice and perseverance :)
Andre Kertesz used a Zuiko 35-70mm and perhaps produced a few photographs more relevant the the purist you speak about…
I did’t say you can’t use a zoom lens for street photography…
I did’t say you can’t use a zoom lens for street photography…
Can you recommend someone film 🎞️ cameras for street photography as well? 🎉
Sorry I’m not really the one to ask about film cameras!
Funny about wotancraft. i just got a wotancraft 7L sling on monday to replace my peak design, i never even heard about the company until 2 weeks ago. it is really a great bag though.
now that you switch to the iphone, i will pick up your new 23 if you make me a good price ;)
Nice one! Yeah they make great bags to be fair. I wish they made a smaller backpack though. I find sling bags uncomfortable, and there’s never enough space for a bottle of water haha.
Hahah no switch for me! Can’t wait to try out the 23mm properly…
@@timjamiesonphotos still haven't tried the 23?!? oh no ;)
ye thats what i like about the 7L. it is small enough for my xt5 + 23 and all my stuff inside... water bottle on the outside. and it is lightweight enough for still be very comfy. but i agree, for more i take a backpack.
