The Legend of Zelda is a really fun and fascinating game. But it is easy to get lost. There are a lot of hidden rooms in this game. This walkthrough is really helpful. Thank you for making this game more approachable and understandable.
I was born 77 and beating this without a walkthrough, Nintendo power, or cheats was so satisfying. But I like these walkthroughs because I love to see stuff I missed and new techniques.
If I had just waited and listen to the entire playthrough first, I probably would have heard you mention that you would eventually do the second quest. Can't wait to watch it.
Been attending classes regularly since I found this channel about six months ago and really enjoy it, this is a nice improvement over the original guide (which was already really good.) I really like that my strategy about the easy way to deal with the Ghinis when farming for rupees and health in the graveyard made it in. Looking forward to the Second Quest class :).
The Granddaddy of the NES, a true gem, it never gets boring! The different quests give it huge replay value. I was playing this back in '88-'89 and having a blast even though me and my friends didn't know everywhere to go...... Great video!
Mc Dongos. Epic, let's go! I love those DDR arrows in the intro. This deserves a million subs and a diamond encrusted play button. If I can come up with some nefarious schemes to defeat the algorithm I will not hesitate to leverage them on your behalf.
I'll always remember playing this when it first came out. I even remember cutting grass to make $ and buy the game at Toys "R" Us with my mom. Great Times in the 80's. Best time to be alive!
I got this one back in Summer of 1992 along with Metroid, Xexyz and the Super Mario Brothers game that had Track & Field and Duck Hunt. My uncle' cousins and I played the crap out of it. Keep up the good work Professor Berigands, Gary, Blaze and Fluf.
The genius of an item like the magic wand is that if you’re brave enough and skilled enough you can get that item at the very start and have a constant long range projectile even when you don’t have full health. For those doing a “swordless run” it’s vital.
Also, if you ever wanted to return to the original Legend of Zelda after this, there's always the Second Quest, and after that... ZELDA RANDOMIZER. Yoinks!
Wow, for some reason it never really occurred to me to go after the big shield before the dungeons. But it certainly does make some of the more dangerous sections of the early game, like getting by that blue Lynel on the way to the white sword, far more trivial.
Even after many years since the game's release, The Legend of Zelda still captivates me. Lot of neat enemies, weapons, dungeons, and levels. A magical and special world was created. Zelda kind of reminds me of the Lord of the Rings or Chronicles of Narnia. Just an amazing concept and design which still attracts fans.
You're spot on with Lord of the Rings, Tolkien was actually a major inspiration for a lot of this game between the story, setting, items, enemies, etc.
Thank you! I knew I messed that up at some point after the fact and couldn't spot where I made the mistake. I think I did the same in the second quest but maybe sorted it in that one, heh.
Not sure if it’s been discussed but in the famicom version of Zelda their controllers had a built in mic where you could whistle or make a noise and it would kill the Pols Voice
I think I commented on this awhile back, but IMO, the 2nd quest is actually easier than the first quest, mainly because you only have to face wizzrobes a grand total of TWICE, compared to the numerous times in 1st quest.
I ate at McDongo's, but my meal exploded. They offered me a boomerang as compensation, but I already had the magic boomerang, so I just took a piece of meat on the bone instead. They won't be getting my hard earned rupees again!
Ha yep. Fluff mentions as much in one of his facts during our upcoming class on the Second Quest - Shigeru Miyamoto and Minoru Arakawa were both a bit concerned at players especially western gamers' abilities to figure that out or have the interest to figure it out. That's part of why there's a mini sort of walkthrough for getting started in the game in the manual.
I don't remember if I mentioned this on your previous Zelda class, but the game only tracks how many enemies you leave on screen, not what they were, so on screens with mixed enemies, you can kill the weak ones and leave and the game might spawn more weak enemies when you return instead of the stronger ones. Also, wizzrobes and darknuts are immune to the beam from the wand, but the book is a straight downgrade, because it replaces the beam with fire immediately on impact, and fire does less damage than the beam, plus enemies that are immune to the beam are also immune to fire, so it's just worse in every way.
@@VideoGames101 yeah, but not much point, especially if you do the dungeons in order, since you get the red candle in dungeon 7, and have to go out of your way to find the book in dungeon 8. There is one good use of the wand, though. Even though the darknuts are immune to the beam, you can still hit them directly with the wand, so if your sword is locked by a bubble, you can use the wand as a temporary melee weapon. In my last couple of runs, I skipped the wand, though.
@@DyrianLightbringer Yep I was going to mention and others have reminded me the wand is good for those small stretches where enemies can remove your ability to use your sword until you find the "antidote".
Ah sometimes we reference or even show the occasional one (did it in Super Metroid somewhat recently) but typically just showing the best ways and tricks to earnestly beating the games.
If I could make one change to the LoZ I would change how the sword works. At three full hearts it would work as normal. At six the projectile would gain one piercing. And at twelve full hearts maybe it would burst into a little firework. Once your heart meter starts getting maxed out it's almost impossible to get caught back up without chugging medicine. With my change you don't lose your basic sword blast until you fall below your initial three hearts. You'll lose your upgraded sword blasts as you drop under the different thresholds. I'd also tie them to the sword upgrades so if you never upgrade your sword you don't get the extra blasts.
@@VideoGames101 It would take a few fairy drops if you went from full to almost empty. And without the sword shot you're more likely to keep getting hit. I guess you could swap to the bow or magic rod or whatever which might be their intent.
@VideoGames101 My Hylian is a bit rusty, but from what i could make out, they glassed him with a bottle and borrowed the fire from the next room for a barbecue. The candied bacon they came back with was _to die for!_
The manji is also prevalent in many native American cultures. That had versus intubations of its meaning from raw cosmic and spiritual power or life force flowing into the world. Among others depending on which of the 100s of tribes you're talking about.
The wand is a lot more useful in second quest. If you lose your sword to a red bubble, it can act as a white sword for most enemies if you hit with the wand part. just doesn't work on wizrobes or ganon that way. It will work for darknuts who are only immune to the projectile from the wand i believe. (Edit: learned from watching randomizer races)
That's fair, but I think it's a combination of it being longer and the fact that you can't get the same leg up from the start of The Second Quest as you can in this one. Money is harder to come by as are hearts early on.
@VideoGames101 I definitely agree with those points. IIRC you can only get 1 extra ❤️ before entering any of the dungeons, and there's only a single 100 rupee secret instead of 3. And there are fewer helpful wise men hints as well. However, some of the higher numbered lvls are actually easier than some of the lower numbered ones, even with minimal upgrades. I won't spoil anything, but just an example, IMO lvl 8 is a joke in 2nd quest, even with just wooden sword, and you get 3 excellent things to boot from it.
You can also stun the smaller Digdoggers with the 🪃. Definitely comes in handy on the triple splitters, but if you time the shot right, all 3 will be stunned at once.
Nope, in the original version on the Famicom you could do that by making noise into the microphone in the second player's controller, but the NES didn't have that feature, so they made them more vulnerable to arrows in the international versions instead.
It's a fair question, because the instruction manual strongly hints that the whistle will work on them (we talk about this in our upcoming class on the Second Quest. What the manual says is actually a reference to what William mentioned - the Famicom version included a microphone on the second player's controller and making sound into that would defeat all of the Pols Voices on the screen (they just didn't bother updating the manual for western audiences to correct this). In this version of the game, arrows are the best solution as William also mentioned.
"Its a secret to everyone". Does anybody have the answer of what this means? I have read a few speculations but never a definitive answer. I always thought it meant the red Moblin's didn't want to fight for Gannon but you encounter so many trying to kill Link I'm not sure that makes sense?

Sir, i hate your classes. You are a true teacher, your cheese, every type, is too cheesy for innocent students. 🤣🤣
i love eating at McDongos, though the food can be kind of rock hard at times, it never goes cold not matter how long you leave it on your plate.
I think I remember that from their commercial from back in the day, "STAYS HOT ALL DAY, NO MATTER HOW LONG IT SITS ON YOUR PLATE!"
Small correction. The compass shows you where the piece of Triforce is located in each dungeon, not the boss.
Good point, Wedge, yep typically one screen removed.
Oh, this is my favorite way to play the game: blue ring and white sword before any dungeons. Thanks prof.
Yeah it's a much more enjoyable experience as far as I'm concerned. A lot less low health beeping!
@VideoGames101 There's something to be said, for wooden and in order.
Try it "original" way. It's tough.
@@iami3rian394 Very tough!
@@oldmansteele that's how we did, man. NES hard was normal mode, when I was a kid.
