Those people discussing the 'best interpretations' are obviously missing the point. This performance was THE event of many of those children's lives. This was something they will never forget. How many ultra poor Venezuelans ever had a chance to sing music of this sort in such a huge group with a huge orchestra with extra instruments? They stepped outside of their poverty and gained a new richness by performing this great work. Yes, Dudamel was the vehicle through which the performance took place, but the supreme organisation of the local conductors and teachers and the whole El Sistema machinery gave those children a unique experience. It was wonderful.

Mahler is one of those rare composers, like Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, who have the power to unite the world.

Isn't it amazing how the inspiration, imagination, and dedication of one person can affect the lives of so many people so long after their creative efforts. Humanity has some pretty cool stand out individuals. I bet a lot more of us have formidable and historic creative potential within us than we realize. But that takes belief, vision, and a lot of work.

This version was off limits for a long time but now it is back. This was the first time I listened this symphony. Now I realize that it is the absolutely very best version. The tempi are just precisely what Mahler intended, I think. Terrific everything. Congratulations to all with my deepest thanks.

I just loved how it ended the after footage and around 1:08 oh just incredible with the the singer I think she's alto or mezzo soprano. This music brings me back to University Toronto studying performance music, clarinet.. and I did a seminar on this piece 50 minutes I really don't remember what I said but I just became obsessed with it🌤

      He's singing:
      Ewiger Wonnebrand,
      Glühendes Liebeband,
      Siedender Schmerz der Brust,
      Schäumende Gotteslust.
      Pfeile, durchdringet mich,
      Lanzen, bezwinget mich,
      Keulen, zerschmettert mich,
      Blitze, durchwettert mich!
      Daß ja das Nichtige
      Alles verflüchtige,
      Glänze der Dauerstern,
      Ewiger Liebe Kern.
      which can be translated as:
      Rapture which yearns for ever,
      Love that burns for ever,
      Seething pain in my breast,
      Frothing love of God.
Come, arrows, and pierce me through,
      Lances - subdue my flesh,
      Maces, come batter me,
      Lightnings - shatter me!
      That nothingness
      Might drown all in emptiness,
      Let one constant star shine:
      The kernel of eternal love.

People talk a big game about Bernstein and Gergiev being the "Mahler" guys. But Dudamel hangs with the very best of them. And his version of the 8th here is no exception. Love it!

    • @westernshipway3115
      @westernshipway3115 7 ปีที่แล้ว

Bernstein may be a big name but that's about all.The choir was often to loud, not subtle enough and the Orchestra going into a crescendo was not gradual enough we were almost half way there at the start, but otherwise okay..

    • @jgesselberty
      @jgesselberty 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Bernstein brought the Mahler symphonies out of the world of curiosities and made them mainstream. His original recordings were landmarks. Improvements in sound recording have certainly made more recent recordings amazingly full blooded, but his 2nd and 8th are treasures. I find that Gergiev does better with Shostakovich than Mahler. He rushes Mahler, like he cannot wait to get done.

    • @hakimbel3121

As regards the 8th, you have to think about it apart from the other malher symphony, because the means it required to be perform appropriately is a big factor that impact the performance greatly. This is why Berstein failed it many times. By the way, in term of malher symphony, the top 1 remains Abbado ...

    • @NPC54619

Los Angeles Philarmonic | Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela
Coro Sinfonico Juvenil Simon Bolivar de Venezuela | Ninos cantores de Venezuela | Schola Cantorum de Venezuela | Schola Juvenil de Venezuela

In Europe, the audience clap like seals when the music pauses between movements (parts in this case); the Venezuelan public show their class here - respect.

I'd love to hear the bass soloist as Hagen or Boris.

I do not have any respect for the political party that dominates Venezuela. They are bloody dictators. But I have to say that I was really moved to watch all these children, some of them probably from poor neighborhoods in Venezuela, singing this wonderful piece of Mahler.
