If I were to hear his symphonies (10, 7, 5, 8, 11, 12) for the very first time BUT didn't know who composed them OR WHEN, I'd think they were for an epic action movie filmed after 1980.
no i think we were all surprised when a youth orchestra played this well. I mean I'm in a very prestigious youth orchestra who has performed at the royal albert hall and is looking to reclaim it's national title at Birmingham symphony hall tomorrow and I have to say this sounds EXTREMELY professional.
I listened to this via live broadcast and i was stunned. The first movement builds zo slow but intens. The scherzo however is very fast such brilliant playing.Bravo!
the fun thing about the Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela is that when Dudamel ended up having all this success, more and more, there were older and older people started joining the orch. It's not a youth orchestra anymore lol
This is without question one of the finest performances of this symphony. Wow...just wow. They need to try their hand at the Shostakovich 8th...VERY difficult piece to perform.
My thoughts exactly. I've never heard anyone match Kondrashin and the Moscow Phil in the 8th for sheer intensity, but Dudamel and SBYO might be able to.
As a violinist I would love to be conducted by Dudamel, he has such energy and command its breath-taking. I remember when I played this with the local amature orchestra I play for, this performance made us look a secondary school orchestra that had just learnt to play, despite the fact we have all been playing for years!

I'm going to break my own rules. I don't believe in the 'best' or 'greatest' but for me this the greatest symphony yet written, & this the best performance I've heard. Shostakovitch sees EVERYTHING. Love, beauty, grandeur, horror, cruelty, everything that is in this world. And it's driving him insane. The section starting about 12.40 (I wish I knew the technical terms for his genius, but whatever techniques he uses are always subservient to his music, his humanity) develops at 17 minutes into the most distraught, compassionate piece of music I've ever heard. It has me in tears. Literally stunning. To paraphrase: Dmitri Will Tear You Apart Again.
Gustavo Dudamel brings out the very best of this highly talented group. His conducting evokes the elegiac and dramatic qualities, with which Shostakovitch imbues in this particular epic symphony; in my opinion, one of the composer's masterpieces, played here with both solemnity and passion. It's just astounding and very noteworthy, all in all, also a joy to listen to.
Maybe, but such beautiful music should not be remembered because of a tyrant. The composition is immaculate, a poem to those who believe in beauty, however sad sometimes beauty is. A victory for love!

All orchestras in Venezuela are double sized due to the abundance of fine musicians. I have seen the combination of two large orchestras, and it amazing. Only in Venezuela.
This is the closest and most interconnected I´ve seen musicians be in an orchestra, including the Director, they all are one big instrument. Bravo "El Sistema" !!
My all-time favourite DSCH work, not to mention the fact that it's one of the 20th-century's greatest symphonies. Bravo a thousand times over. The second movement if played just a tad fast really brings on the "wow" factor. No other conductor plays the second movement with such passion.
Assolutamente fantastico.
At 125 plus committed and competent musicians (with a good amount above the usual compliment of strings) the second movement, taken at the extreme end of the tempo indication, sounds even more menacing, hectoring and impactful than usual. Overwhelming barely begins to describe it and the rest of the performance as well. Bravo to the orchestra and Dudamel. Simply a composition of great breadth and depth of feeling/emotions (and of high craft, of which DSCH was most proud)...in the tradition of someone whose work he admired deeply, Mahler.
I love the expression(s) on Dudamel's face around the 32:00 mark... I have no words! He's completely uncanny. Amazing. Over the past few months I've watched this video so many times that I can practically see it with my eyes shut, but somehow it never gets old.
I play this nearly every day, sometimes more than once. It never fails to inspire and awe me at the great talent displayed here, as well as the genius of the work. Shostakovitch held his displeasure with Stalin inside all his life, then this exploded forth at the news of Stalin's death. Never have I been so overjoyed to celebrate someone's death so much along with the composer. And Stalin did it to himself. Imagine, even his doctors were terrified to touch him as he lay gasping for breath on the floor. A fitting end, as Shostakovitch certainly lets the brass and woodwinds blow out their breaths in happiness at his passing.
Shostakovich: Symphony No. 10 / Dudamel · Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela. Great composer, great conductor, great performance! It is simply breathtaking! Gustavo Dudamel and Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra you are magnificent and unique! I've watched this video at least ten times and never get tired to watch it again. You tremendsuly, have inspired me!
Yes, Gene, yes, yes, yes !! We know that this is a result of a wonderful project, called El Sistema, where maestro Dudamel came from. Unfortunately, however, this project, supported by the Venezuelan government, probably won't last. Theres a smell of coup in the air, and, as ever in Latin America, the local elite and high-middle class will take power. And, also as ever, will cut social costs, in the name of "financial equilibrium", which means, more money to the riches.

The first notes scream for authority. This is one of the most exciting symphonies I know - and not just for the crazy 2nd movement. The whole piece is full of imagination, sarcasm, irony and hatred. Shostakovich spat on Stalin´s grave and this music makes it audible.
@@sovietclassic5301 Well, you better read his biography. And not one by a stalinist but a more independent writer. ALSO you have a great chance to read what Shostakovich himself said about his music and especially this symphony. Ignorance is not always bliss, my friend.

One of the most powerful and beautiful introductions to any piece of music. Wonderful. A great piece of music by one of the all time great composers. And so beautifully played as well. So good. Thank you.
Great interpretation! Fearless and most enthusiastic! The brass might be a tad too controlled (but I'm being a bit highly demanding and too used to Russian brass that is OUT of control).
I have no words... this is stunning beyond belief... The only thing that could have made this better would have been if I were lucky enough to have been in the audience to experience this live.

Impresionante.
Así mismo. :')
Dudamel,un Mago!!
Every now and then,I turn to this symphony no.10 sponteniosy,!It is an inner demand, I guess.Kevork Zabounian. Sweden,Stockholm

Besides being performed well, this is one of the greatest symphonies of all time. So beautifully composed.
Genius. He's amazing as a Director & Instructor. Much to be proud of.
Immensely powerful and expressive for such young musicians. They are immensely talented.

Oh how I have to wished to have been attendance for this performance. This is the GREATEST performance of my favourite symphony ever.
Thanks ever so much for posting
Fenomenale interpretatione. Grande Maestro di Musica - D. Shostakovich.
Every time, this piece leaves me close to tears. Very powerful
Me too, even two minutes in... 😂😂😂
The best ever performance to date. Five stars!
How can you NOT just love this? Simply amazing.
Hard to find the appropriate words, I want to bathe in this wonderful piece, need to find a way to get to see this amazing man. The passion from these young people and Gustav is awe inspiring, thank you for keeping GREAT music alive. Bravo to Venezuela for supporting and maintains this program.
Spectacular performans, fascinating!Dudamel is my favorite conductor
Absolutely amazing! This God of a conductor Dudamel brings out another awe inspiring performance from one of the best orchestras I have ever heard. These young people bring life to music like no other, as if they are playing for their lives, with all their heart. I cannot commend them enough for such fine performances. They are all stars that shine with brilliance under this amazing genius of our time. I only hope am lucky enough to one day watch them perform live. What a wonder to hear and behold. Bravo! Bravo!!!
Breathtaking. Behold what socialized music programs can produce. Corporations produce stuff. People produce true beauty. Bravo.
Simply magnificent! I love the work of Gustavo Dudamel!
I love SHOSTAKOVICH...Grande concerto e ottimo audio.
Grazie❤🌹
This is one of the best renditions of this fantastic symphony...the musicians may be younger, but they play like very mature individuals! Greeeeeeeat!
Rafael Payare is the music director of the San Diego Symphony Orchestra 2021.
Incredibly great -- both the marvelous performance and Shostakovich's brilliant symphony.
I replayed the piece again today. very, very powerfull indeed. great perfection and greatly directed.
One of my favorite symphonies...and this is my favorite performance. Bravo to the Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra!
The first notes scream for authority. This is one of the most exciting symphonies I know - and not just for the crazy 2nd movement. The whole piece is full of imagination, sarcasm, irony and hatred. Shostakovich spat on Stalin´s grave and this music makes it audible.
Altonahh10, you hear what you want to hear. Shostakovich was a completely Soviet composer and was awarded with 5 Stalin prizes
@@sovietclassic5301 Well, you better read his biography. And not one by a stalinist but a more independent writer. ALSO you have a great chance to read what Shostakovich himself said about his music and especially this symphony. Ignorance is not always bliss, my friend.
@@Altonahh10 , /And not one by a stalinist but a more independent writer/
"Writer stalinist"? uahaha) what is wrong with you? there are no such writers. there are writers who write about Shostakovich and anti-Soviet propagandists. most of western writers are anti-soviet propagandists.
@@sovietclassic5301 And what does that prove? Judging by your nick name only, you seem to be one of those Russian trolls here. So shoo

¡Bravo, Dudamel, Brava OSJSB! In my opinion, a great version and a great orchestra. Thanks, Gustavo Dudamel!
Best performance of this Symphony I´ve ever heard.
A performance of immense maturity. Astonishingly musical. They must have had many sectional rehearsals with very fine tutors
In Venezuela, despite fake reports, socialism works. This performance is the proof.
Wonderful performance! Bravo Dudamel and the orchestra!

the ending brings me so much joy. dudamel looks so proud of the orchestra, the audience explodes with applause (and that really loud "hey!" i love it omg), it's just so pure c:
dudamel is so full of energy the entire time and doesn't even break a sweat from what i can tell? and you can tell at the end he knows it was a damn good performance too and it just makes me so happy to watch this cx
one of the best interpretations too, by far! thanks so much for uploading this! made my day :D
SBYSO proves to be the MOST talented youth orchestra in the world. My seat is wet.
such a massive number of musicians who can play together even at the fastest tempos...from 53:36 is astounding...
One of the best performances i have ever heard

OH MY GOD this is absolutely amazing wow
I have no words... this is stunning beyond belief... The only thing that could have made this better would have been if I were lucky enough to have been in the audience to experience this live.
I agree with you a million percent my friend ! Thank You for Saying It !!
Amazing as ever . Please come back to the Proms soon
