I love this cartoon 30 years later and it’s my favourite Spider-Man cartoon (I love spectacular Spider-Man but this cartoon did a lot for future Spider-Man stories)
Start of the legendary series that introduced me to Spider-Man. The pacing is always very fast for better or worse, but it still leaves room for a lot of character building. I particularly like the changes to Spencer/Alister Smythe from the comics, being a lot more relatable than just being mad geniuses. Smythe as Kingpin's 2nd in command (and Kingpin constantly yelling at him for failures) is one of the things people remember most about the show along with Kingpin's performance in general (Roscoe Lee Brown).
17:00 A brownout and a blackout are different things. A blackout is an unexpected complete interruption of power, while a brownout is an intentional reduction of power. 42:00 I guess you've never seen the comic version of Norman and Harry before, because they look very similar, especially the hair. 55:20 This was originally aired on Fox Kids, so the joke isn't actually that random. 37:00 & 1:04:20 The openings actually have been different every episode so far, I can't remember if they keep doing that or not. 1:12:40 Trust me, Jameson has always been crazy. In the comics, he funded and piloted the original Spider-Slayer, 40 years before the Sam Raimi movies. He's also done some other examples, but the Spider-Slayer is the most relevant.
Personally I'd say the Scorpion is the most relevant example of Jameson funding things he shouldn't, just based on how iconic a villain Scorpion is compared to the Smythes and their robots.
Jameson actually has so much character and a genuinely valid backstory in this show. Sadly more modern interpretation only make him an angry shouty guy.
So here's some interesting facts about the series. Electro and Sandman were off limits because they were going to be the villains in the cancelled James Cameron Spiderman movie, but one does appear near the end of the series. There were some weird rules set on the series too, but the biggest one was Spiderman wasn't allowed to throw punches. That said there are a few times where he does.
This is actually a misconception, according to the show runner John Semper himself. The censorship rules were the same as nearly any other cartoon on Saturday morning. Semper just chose to play it safe. He felt that if it wasn’t necessary for Spider-Man to throw a punch or for the enemies to have real guns instead of laser blasters, then it wasn’t something he was gonna risk. Those things do still happen when it’s important but they just didn’t feel like doing it when it wasn’t necessary for the plot. Being conservative about it in the short term allowed them to get away with the most important stuff in the long term.
90s Spider-Man!!!! OMG I didn’t know this was on the table; God I hope that this means 90s X-men is on the table as a future reaction series!! Edit: Glad to hear that X-men is indeed at least a possibility!
Honestly I'd say each of the main X-men cartoons (90's , X-Men Evolution and Wolverine and The X-Men) along with the other spiderman cartoons (New Animated Series then Spectacular Spiderman to follow)
Same. Before most of the pre-MCU marvel movies came out, this series and X-Men: Evolution were my gateways into Marvel. I was a bit too young to get into the 90’s X-Men series, but I definitely have fond memories of watching X-Men: Evolution on Kids WB when I was younger.
(At 21:40) So basically this is one of two side effects he wasn't counting on. Side effect 1: mutating into an bipedal / quadripetal lizard Side effect 2: developing a violent split personality
The theme song for this show was composed by Aerosmith! Eddie Brock is voiced by Hank Azeria, same voice actor as Chief Wiggum, among other voices on the Simpsons.
This one has "Arcs" Each arc will change up the Opening animation a bit. The Venom arc will have him more Prominent The first episode is set as a Quick Arc to introduce Connors
i love that this could possibly branch out into other classic and modern superhero cartoons, hell the very idea of shark reacting to spectacular spiderman is making me hyped, or jlu would be fun too, either way i cant wait to see what he thinks of this show
cant believe Flaming Shark is reacting to my childhood! i lvoed this show so much growing up. its pretty good at the beginning, but it gets really crazy good later on
Wow, this is indeed very unexpected. Very classic show, just be prepared to keep up with its insanely fast pace. I honestly haven't seen any other show with such fast paced story. Dunno how I haven't noticed that as a kid.
HOLY CRAP!? i never expected something like this was going to happen! This is one of my favorite cartoons of all time and one of the best versions of spidey i have seen ever! I am so excited to see your reactions to some of the most iconic moments even if the series is obviously a product of it's time in certain aspects like the pacing.
TMNT (2003) will forever be my generation’s Ninja Turtles. Just like the 80’s TMNT cartoon will forever be my older brother’s generation of Ninja Turtles.
There was the three-part Alien Costume episode. Venom is hinted at in the dying seconds of the part two before making his full appearance in part three. Venom makes two more appearances after that, in the episodes "Venom Returns" and "Carnage".
You were actually quite right there was a FF4, Hulk, X-men and Iron Man series in the 90s and each was pretty good. The that you didn't mentioned was the Silver Surfer series.
My childhood 😭 It feels so weird watching it again after so many years. I remember the plot getting more and more ridiculous towords the end can't wait for you to get there lol
The first episode came out months before the rest of the series so they didn't have as much footage and the intro was different. Once they had a full season they added scenes from different episodes to the intro, then it changes again in like season 2.
Yo!? Holy shit! I did not see this one coming! If you were going to react to a Spider-Man cartoon, I'm pretty sure that everyone would've guessed it to be Spectacular Spider-Man. But this is awesome as well, since not many people have actually done reactions to the older show.
I wasn't born in the 90s but I remember it being on live tv on the fox kids channel. Grew up with this series and by far is one of my all time favorites. Spiderman being my favorite hero's I went ahead and bought the whole series on dvd. IM really excited to see you react to this series.
The voice actor for Spider-Man/Peter Parker in this was the same voice actor for the original Spider-Man PlayStation game. Iconic Spider-Man voice, and the first Spider-Man voice I heard
Funnily enough, the live-action movies by Sam Rami starring Tobey McGuire as our "Friendly Neighborhood" wall-crawler are based on the 1994 animated series & as expected, the source material comics.
OMG, my childhood! I was 2 when this show came out but there were enough reruns for me to watch it on TV. That's the show that introduced me to the friendly neighborhood Spider and to comics in general. Rediscovering it with you will be a pleasure.
90s had X-Men, Hulk, Iron Man, Avengers (no one you would recognize on the team) X-Men Evalution came out after X-men the movie Wolverine came out after the MCU started one character we know from the movies was not in the series due to rights so they replaced him Silver Surfer was also a cartoon series at this era.
Dude, so happy you’re doing this show! If you end up covering other classic cartoon shows, you gotta give Gargoyles a try - I absolutely promise that you will not be disappointed.
Wow. Never have I ever expected a Spider-Man TAS reaction series. I would've assumed he'd go for Spectacular Spider-Man first if i knew Spider-Man was even in the discussion for shows to put on his western slot. This'll be interesting.
13:17 The guitar solo you hear in the opening score was played by Aerosmith's Joe Perry. 17:18 A blackout effects a large area, a many blocks. Where as a brownout effects a small area or only one building or home.
I grew up on this series so I have fond, fond memories of it. But I haven't seen it since like...probably 2006 or whenever I was watching reruns of it and X-men (and the Tick!) on Toon DIsney XD...Gale of Darkness or whatever it was called at that exact moment in time.
I love this series its where I learned all about Spider-Man X-Men and Batman from this era also highly recommended Gargoyles too if you like dark comic stuff. Also, this was before ANY Marvel movie you can name. even before the lesser remembered ones.
Just recently started rewatching Spider-Man The Animated Series again. It really is a great one. Can't wait until Marvel Animation brings this back with the X-Men '97 treatment
So unfortunately the episodes for Season 1 are out of order on Disney+. The correct order is: Night of the Lizard The Sting of the Scorpion The Spider Slayer Return of the Spider Slayers The Menace of Mysterio Doctor Octopus: Armed and Dangerous The Alien Costume, Part One The Alien Costume, Part Two The Alien Costume, Part Three Kraven the Hunter The Hobgoblin, Part One The Hobgoblin, Part Two Day of the Chameleon
Well, after looking into it, the order on disney+ is actually the release order, while what you're suggesting is, for the most part, the production order. So, I agree that this is the correct order, but it doesn't really matter. Also, according to production order, it actually goes from the alien costume part 2 into kraven the hunter, and the alien costume part 3 comes later as the season finale, so make of that what you will
Whoooaaa, crazy days man. Watched a chunk of this as a kid, mostly on compilation DVDs. I remember it being pretty fun; the theme song captures what I still think the tone of Spiderman should always be. There should be something grotesque and apocalyptic about Spiderman's New York, which is a tone cartoons have gotten less comfortable with since the 90s. I'll echo the others here suggesting Batman if you end up doing more 90s shows; just finished a rewatch of that and it remains stellar, plus it leads right into Justice League and JLU which together are probably the best super hero TV ever made.
17:13 a dictionary said brown-out is whwn it's controlled, intentional turning off the lights, instead of unexpected due to some accident. Done to minimise pressure on the grid
Nostalgia timeeeee 🤩 as with Teen Titans, I love re-experiencing my childhood favorites with Shark and re-evaluating them with my current tastes through his reactions!
TV Tropes order is production order. Order he's doing is airdate order. Sting of the Scorpion is definitely supposed to be first because Felicia says, "Parker, you're unpredictable, you know that?" Then in Spider Slayers, she says, "Unpredictable as ever, Parker."
HOLY SH- This is- I legit can't find words to properly describe how I feel about this, but I am very happy about it. Also, sidenote, I'm not positive, but I'm pretty sure Disney+ uses a different intro/opening sequence for this series than it originally had, though that might be a good thing since the original had even more spoilers for future episodes. EDIT: Nevermind, apparently this is in fact the normal opening for S1 and I just only ever saw the one from S2 onwards when I originally watched the series.
Ok im checking this out i never seen the old one just all the other animated ones Ep 1 feels like they made this show as a toy seller no real depth. Kinda hope it gets better glad to have a reason to watch it
Ah yes, this series was great, although I was only ever able to watch it sporadically and often out or order as various rerun airings, which isn't ideal when this show had some of the tightest Western cartoon continuity at the time save for "Gargoyles." I'm glad to take the chance to see the whole thing as intended. Still, this cartoon was all I knew about Spider-man before the Raimi movies, which caused a few disconnects for me. For example, I didn't know who Sandman was when he was announced as one of the villains for "Spider-man 3." I also didn't know anything about Gwen Stacy until much later.
Not in a million years I would have expected this
Neither would I
Sure as hell ain’t complaining
@@Oneofhisravens me neither
Same
Bruh. I (and likely others) turned away from this Channel for a moment, 😂and this pops up? Oh, I hope these reactions don't get him struck.

Honestly, Spider-man not being allowed to punch feels like Elmer Fudd not getting to use a gun. Oh, wait. They did that too.
Stupid censorship.
Being conservative about it in the short term allowed them to get away with the most important stuff in the long term.
The punches thing is a myth. I wonder how it became so popularized
That whole "Spider-Man not being aloud to punch" complaint is false, and really getting old.
Spider-Man The Animated Series?! Just another reason Shark is the GOAT of reaction channels!
Plus, there's a continuation coming out next year so we could go from the nineties cartoon right into the 2024 continuation if he times it right.
The fantastic four and iron man shows 2nd season are alot better then the first
The opening actually changes slightly almost every episode. And some times there's drastic changes so I recommend not skipping them.
This show was my first introduction to Spider-Man and marvel in general
Same. Before most of the pre-MCU marvel movies came out, this series and X-Men: Evolution were my gateways into Marvel. I was a bit too young to get into the 90’s X-Men series, but I definitely have fond memories of watching X-Men: Evolution on Kids WB when I was younger.
Same
Same here. Loved it
me too. when i think back to my favorite cartoon when I was just about 3-9 years old. it was the 1994 animated Spider-Man series!
(At 21:40) So basically this is one of two side effects he wasn't counting on.
Side effect 1: mutating into an bipedal / quadripetal lizard
Side effect 2: developing a violent split personality
This series was my introduction to the entire Spiderman franchise. I'm so happy that I get to see someone else watch it for the first time.
The theme song for this show was composed by Aerosmith!
Eddie Brock is voiced by Hank Azeria, same voice actor as Chief Wiggum, among other voices on the Simpsons.
Duff Man voice is most similar to Brock! "Oh yeah!"
This one has "Arcs"
Each arc will change up the Opening animation a bit.
The Venom arc will have him more Prominent
The first episode is set as a Quick Arc to introduce Connors
i love that this could possibly branch out into other classic and modern superhero cartoons, hell the very idea of shark reacting to spectacular spiderman is making me hyped, or jlu would be fun too, either way i cant wait to see what he thinks of this show
PEAK FICTION
I grew up watching this
this is my fave spider-man theme
90’S SPIDER-MAN REPRESENT!
Seems there's so few of us TO represent these days
(At 25:00) This is part of the second side effect, He's barely maintaining his humanity, And he's becoming mentally unstable.
cant believe Flaming Shark is reacting to my childhood! i lvoed this show so much growing up. its pretty good at the beginning, but it gets really crazy good later on
Wow, this is indeed very unexpected. Very classic show, just be prepared to keep up with its insanely fast pace. I honestly haven't seen any other show with such fast paced story. Dunno how I haven't noticed that as a kid.

(At 41:15) Felicia Hardy, otherwise known as "The Black Cat". Think of her as Marvel's Catwoman.
they are nothing alike
Ayooo i never expected this- holy fuck this will be a ride-
I hope TMNT 2003 and 2012 will be another addition of unexpected reactions
Definitely 2003 it's my favorite series next to Rise
The 2003 Tmnt is my favorite along with the 2012 version
I'd bust if he reacted to 2003 TMNT.
TMNT (2003) will forever be my generation’s Ninja Turtles. Just like the 80’s TMNT cartoon will forever be my older brother’s generation of Ninja Turtles.
Man I remember only watching snippets of this series and the intro in particular so its gonna be great seeing this again
40:15 Bastila Shan seems to be antsy.
1:05:03 I absolutely love the dramatic irony of Peter saying that about the person he ends up marrying.
OMFG that's literally my childhood right there.
I literally can't feel any more nostalgia...
this is my second favourite Spiderman series of all time (also all of marvel series's ) after the spectacular Spiderman of course
I used to watch this show when i was a kid, i still remember watching it with my great grandma, good times
Well of course spideys voice is amazing bc that's Christopher Daniel Barnes who's considered to be one of the top voices for spiderman
Harry and Norman are using their Classic Comic style haircut
Specific to the 90's
This is my childhood dude, I remember owning three caset tapes of this series. And I recall that one of them was a episode about venom.
There was the three-part Alien Costume episode. Venom is hinted at in the dying seconds of the part two before making his full appearance in part three. Venom makes two more appearances after that, in the episodes "Venom Returns" and "Carnage".
A brownout is when the power is flickering, but not off
You were actually quite right there was a FF4, Hulk, X-men and Iron Man series in the 90s and each was pretty good. The that you didn't mentioned was the Silver Surfer series.

I watched the crap out of this growing up so a pleasant surprise.

1:07:33 that reminded me 1992's animated X-Men's pilot where a little girl wanted a Sentinel robot 😂
90s had X-Men, Hulk, Iron Man, Avengers (no one you would recognize on the team)
X-Men Evalution came out after X-men the movie
Wolverine came out after the MCU started
one character we know from the movies was not in the series due to rights so they replaced him
Silver Surfer was also a cartoon series at this era.

I love this series its where I learned all about Spider-Man X-Men and Batman from this era also highly recommended Gargoyles too if you like dark comic stuff.
Also, this was before ANY Marvel movie you can name. even before the lesser remembered ones.
Man I remember going to Blockbuster to rent this series, that and the Spirit movie
Just recently started rewatching Spider-Man The Animated Series again. It really is a great one. Can't wait until Marvel Animation brings this back with the X-Men '97 treatment
This is the Spider-Man I grew up with.
Guess you've seem Spectacular already, this one is ALSO great
Never expected this to appear here
YES OMG YES MY CHILDHOOD!! Man Spider Arc here we gooo!!
Shark watching some Peak Marvel content😍😍
Wow what a wonderful surprise! Excited for this!
I can't wait for Shark to experience the iconic memes this show spawned.
So unfortunately the episodes for Season 1 are out of order on Disney+.

17:13 a dictionary said brown-out is whwn it's controlled, intentional turning off the lights, instead of unexpected due to some accident. Done to minimise pressure on the grid
My friend, you have awoken my nostalgia
A blast from the past, supprise to be sure, but a welcome one. Takes me back when i was a kid.
I remember watching this show so much in the early 2010s on Netflix. Which I don’t remember if I watched all of it but I saw most of it at least.
holy shit i did not expect episodes of this to move at such a breakneck pace
can 90's shows really not even have a few moments of silence lmao
Nostalgia timeeeee 🤩 as with Teen Titans, I love re-experiencing my childhood favorites with Shark and re-evaluating them with my current tastes through his reactions!
HOLY SHIT!!! OH MY GODS!!! MY CHILDHOOD!!!
Hmm, TV Tropes lists "Sting of the Scorpion" as Episode #2 with the two Spider Slayer episodes as #3 & #4.
TV Tropes order is production order. Order he's doing is airdate order. Sting of the Scorpion is definitely supposed to be first because Felicia says, "Parker, you're unpredictable, you know that?" Then in Spider Slayers, she says, "Unpredictable as ever, Parker."
Oh wow this is different. I hope he does spectacular at some point
About the spiderblood theme, it shouldn't work as well as it does but i love it. It may be because of Nostalgia but still.
When I say I need spectacular after this I swear to god
Bro came out of left field with the most unexpected series yet
(At 23:15) Don't talk shit about Hulk or the Defenders!
What? I did not expect this. I didn't expect Zim before. You are full of surprises Shark
I LOVE 90S SPIDER-MAN!!!
Now we need Justice League & Justice League unlimited reactions! Love this show
All we need now is batman the animated series! Omggg I love both of these shows 😀
Hopefully this means he’ll react to other marvel animated series’s
I hope for an X-Men series.
Now THIS is gonna be a journey
I refuse to believe that you and Kickass didn't plan these uploads out xD
HOLY SH- This is- I legit can't find words to properly describe how I feel about this, but I am very happy about it. I am so PUMPED for this!
this was my show when I was a kid
Batman Animated series 1992
Spider-Man Animated series 1992
Xmen Animated series 1992
I was born in 1992 lol
I would love for you to watch Spectacular Spider-man, too after this! Its personally the best show and its sad it was not finished.
“SHOCKER!!!”
Great series dude!
WHAT!!!!! MY FAVORITE CARTOON?!?!?!?!?! Insane
Yeah, we eatin good tonight boys
Well this is a delightful surprise. Hey hopefully once this reaction is done you'll consider spectacular spider-man as that ones my favorite
Thank you for this. Thank you. You have no idea.
I don’t know what I was expecting but it wasn’t this. Not that I’m gonna complain. This series is great.
why did I just notice "BOOTY-O's" in the back lmfao
Nice :) loved this series as a kid. You should check out the 90's X-men series too
Ok im checking this out i never seen the old one just all the other animated ones
Ep 1 feels like they made this show as a toy seller no real depth. Kinda hope it gets better glad to have a reason to watch it
THIS IS SO RANDOM.....I LOVE IT
This was my first introduction to super heroes
Why do bad guys always set explosives to detonate in an hour instead of 30 seconds
Ah yes, this series was great, although I was only ever able to watch it sporadically and often out or order as various rerun airings, which isn't ideal when this show had some of the tightest Western cartoon continuity at the time save for "Gargoyles."
