The symbiote simply offered 2 very handy features: it's own webbing (which never made him run out of his web fluid again) and the quick change of clothing as the suit could change appearence to mimic any outfit. The sole reason Peter got rid of it in the original story was after finding out the Symbiote was actually a living being that got the wrong idea of what Peter wanted to do and started taking over his body to be Spider-Man while he slept. That creeped him out. It was trying to help him but the relationship became invasive and was more than what Peter was asking for between having a somewhat normal life and doing his superheroing. The symbiote only became resentful and hateful when Peter left it. The Symbiote affecting The personality of its hosts is a concept introduced in the 90's Spider-Man Animated Series.
