My best friend doesnt love the dead. He saw the album cover with the skeleton and roses, and expected some heavy metal, guns and roses type shit😂 and I think the 1st song was uncle johns band😂 He could never get past that, no matter how many ways I approached him. He likes Phish tho... Go figure that one eh? Thanks for letting me have the weird angle on it and blab for a minute🙏🇨🇦👊🏻👨🏻🌾💖🕺🏼 🌹💀🥀🔹🔹🔹💠🔹🔹🔹
Hanging out here in my cabin with my dogs in the foothills of Northern Colombia Sierra Mountains on a cool night listening and watching! this show from '82 is a special treat.
I missed the days of the house we had in the hills of California where the gold was mined, at night it was so quiet you can actually hear your own heartbeat. And you'd be able to hear a pin drop in the room.
I clicked start randomly and watched this whole show, thank you, I audio recorded this concert from inside the show from an FM broadcast signal on a local radio staion, my tape case covers still to this day are made of a new years hat party favor from that night, I was 19, had no tickets,I was from NY and Chris, Julie and I all got in, that was 30 years ago next week, wow, time flys.
You're comment gave me a hearty grin I feel this show is worthy of the official release the setlist is cool the Etta James encores only reinforce that notion for me Lol I just watched Tucker Carlson on Rogan talking about how he stole his parents car in San fran when he was 15n drove 2 hrs to a dead gig got miracle 1 ticket n then abandoned his 13 brother who was tripping balls and how he went in woundup chains making in a bathroom stall peaking on psilocybin fungus buttons and subsequently found his brother in the lot . Lol you just don't get life experiences like that at non Dead concerts lol
That was my only New Years show. I stood outside with a sign “I need a miracle” and a guy who worked with Bill Graham productions came up to me and sold me a ticket for $20. After I was inside, I saw a mob of people charge the doors to try and get in, and the cops beat them back. I was feeling so lucky to be inside. Then I found a good spot in the middle of the floor and sat on some structure that gave me a good view of the show. It was great.
Something like that happened to me too at a show, when the promoter came up to me he seen I needed a ticket but the place is already packed out he told me to wait then I will smuggled in that was Mr Graham. It's very nice guy bumped into him several times during many shows.
was here half naked with long hair, tie-dye skirts, rings on fingers and bells on ankles while dancing in black birkestocks...........Best 16-40 + YEARS of my life..follow them STILL..House band I am certain...thanks for this sooo much!!!!!!!!!!!!
Effin A dude... thanks!! as a keyboard player and a huge Mr. Mydland fan and my inspiration, I just wish there were more up close and prolonged shots of this mysterious, enigmatic, yet highly gifted member of the band, in EVERY GD video… He was shown a lot in ‘Downhill From Here’ but few others…
so nice seeing this it was 30 years ago WOW! i was there did not get in new years it was like trying to git in to the supper bowl. but man enjoyed seeing it now. well 30 years latter hope you all have a merry christmas and a happy new year. i love you more than words can tell.
wow etta james in the third set.one of THE greatest singers of all time. jerry's singing doesn't seem to be on form this night doesn't matter though he has the coolest vocals in rock...just wish pig pen was up there with them to rock the house down..
This was after I moved from CA. I've only heard of this concert, but it was always talked about as special. Etta was a real gem. I believe they were both doing at that period and on New Years. I'm loving this. It's already in my favorites, THANK YOU, MAN!
Iwt tryed to tape the show my road dog sal left the show with my mikes after the show I asked him why he said Jerry chould see us and would not played any rare songs meanwhile I'm tripping thinking some one got tape the show now after all these year😊 get watch it 😅
Jerry's really swinging his axe at this concert. It's funny because this concert was on a Friday. I had moved out to Cal. from Col. I was working in Oakland and living in Berkeley. I was riding home from work at about 5:30pm. I read in the paper that they were playing at the auditorium that night. I saw them there about a year ago when I first came out. So I was thinking to myself "oh well, that's nice but I don't think I'll go because I've got a good job now" I also started drinking too much. Then I read in the article, as I was passing the arena that they were playing a new song they had written called "Day Job".
I was there. It was an awesome show. Been down a lot of roads seen a lot of things listen to a live dead show good memories always brings. Memories of youth memories of hope memories bring me peace helping to cope. Thoughts of inspiration I could never play like Jerry but I can make a difference this burden I will carry.
As always Thank you for upping Voodoo! Im sure we crossed paths at many a show since we were seeing them at the same time..It was REALLY never the same after Brent left.
I know everybody hated Dayjob ,but I always thought it was the Dead's way of saying" OK guys we've all; had fun, but don't take any of this too seriously. Living on the road takes more brains and balls than most of you have got!"And God bless the child who's got his own stash, 9 to 5 and a place to crash!
This Cumberland is Hott!!! I love when Jer ripz on those Cumberland's. Something about those 80-83 Cumberland's. Wish they would of played it during those 77-79 shows. Would of loved to hear how Jerry's Travis Bean or how Wolf would sound doing that tune. Jerry makes his Tiger roar.
on the 30th I was siting outside in tint city with no tick & no money a guy sat down with me ask where i was from. I told hem Norfolk VA. (long story short) he gave me a miracle and a dose. im on the floor 20 feet from jerry never herd TPL befor only lines jerry sings in pr. land as he sings norfolk VA he looks right at me and tell the folks back home this is the promised land callin and the poor boys on the line. NO SHIT TRUE STORY. one of the beatiful things that happened to me going to shows
Watching Bobby and Etta interact during makes me wish that she'd played with them when Pigpen was in the band. Now that would have been something! Still this is a fantastic show. I'm gonna go to the LMA to check out the show before this one. Damn if that one's hotter it's gonna practically be molten.
glab; share your thoughts. whenever i need to check back in with brent i go to the truckin up to buffalo dvd and watch the nfa. there is a minute or so where brent and jerry trade riffs. Both guys are having a ball.
2:36:20 Hard to Handle The night before- even hotter, especially as unexpected. I remember Bill saying something about more musicians, coming out to play some more- so we knew it was more than the usual encore. My first west coast shows, this New Years 82 run...
strangely appropriate - 'Brokedown Palace" after Etta's performance: Fare you well, fare you well I love you more than words can tell Listen to the river sing sweet songs to rock my soul
love the bass sound right off the bat here... you can really hear phil outgrowing the 4 strings... bass lines like octopus tentacles seeking to go higher and lower...
I must agree, Brent was the mainstay of the band and in my opinion did not get the respect he so richly deserved. Ya have to laugh at Bob Weir though...He hate's ballons and during these New Year shows they alway had loads of them. He has been quoted as saying "I Hate Those FN Ballons, There so dangerous when they get on Stage" In this video you hear him say it also. Great show's Thank you for posting!
Great show. I am beginning to listen to it now. The third set looks really flavorful and with Etta James to boot. Are you G.D. Family? I congratulate you on these lovely recordings and sharing them. Lots of love.
chippety pop I've heard some good stuff while he was using and I've hards some slop.BFA was the high point for me.I'm partial to anything Terrapin and before. But,I love ALL of it !
+Geoffrey Russell before Brent died , he and myself would sit and discuss the " who would die first. Prior to Ventura shows he decided that it was onerous...and that as much as he loved ithe band,,,,he couldn't keep up. so,,,,,we did the Nitrous thinging for a few days,,,,, nothing like a " sunset : on a life in Nitrious.
The night before was MUCH hotter, really, musically- especially The Etta James set. But hey, New Years Eve is always fun, evenif not the hottest of the usual 5 show series- ah, those were the days!
do they have any of the night before on youtube especially the etta james set. was there a cool poster to this concert. i'd love to check that out too :):)
@voodoonola No doubt dude, as much as I like Bruce and Vince, the last five years after Brent (90-95) were sort of predictable.. the music lost clarity, and Jerry became more disengaged
Never will I be friends with anyone who doesn’t live the Grateful Dead. 🎉❤🎉
lonely boy...............
My best friend doesnt love the dead. Keep your edge on
Left me out in the cold rain and snow I ain't no t be gonna be treated this way
listen to book of rules by Bobby Weir Band!
When I heard Pigpen sing the “mama killed a chicken” bit, I just assumed it was part of The Rub. But I guess that line comes from Bottle Up and Go”?
love the bass sound right off the bat here... you can really hear phil outgrowing the 4 strings... bass lines like octopus tentacles seeking to go higher and lower...
also... im only a few songs in but.... where is the between song noodling? seems weird and... umm... professional? :)
You can see the whole band is really getting into it when she sings with them
He says "fatal tune" in this Cold Rain. NICE!
I must agree, Brent was the mainstay of the band and in my opinion did not get the respect he so richly deserved. Ya have to laugh at Bob Weir though...He hate's ballons and during these New Year shows they alway had loads of them. Great show. I am beginning to listen to it now. The third set looks really flavorful and with Etta James to boot. Are you G.D. Family? I congratulate you on these lovely recordings and sharing them. Lots of love.
Those early heroin years brought out the best of Jerry's musical instincts.
chippety pop I've heard some good stuff while he was using and I've hards some slop.BFA was the high point for me.I'm partial to anything Terrapin and before. But,I love ALL of it !
+chippety maybe it was the smack.....maybe it was us...
+Geoffrey Russell things had changed..... so had the drugs
+Geoffrey Russell time was .... a doobie and a hit was cool... turned nasty towards the end.

Maybe I’m wrong because this looks different then the one I have ! ?
Mr. Mydland tearing shit APART in CC Rider....This show is HOT HOT HOT!
powernotes!
How many Dead shows do you think were filmed/videotaped? A thousand? Was every show being videotaped by the mid 1980s?
@voodoonola No doubt dude, as much as I like Bruce and Vince, the last five years after Brent (90-95) were sort of predictable.. the music lost clarity, and Jerry became more disengaged
that suggeree is the shit YA MAN!
if you like good muzak listen to classics of love w/ lyric sheet by common rider!
dude you don't happen to have 12/31/81 do you? I'd kill to actually SEE that Dark Star.
During Sugar magnolia Bobby says "Holy Fuck look at all those balloons!"
swing and groove
he's my main alabama Man!
Not Jerry's best solo on Ramble on Rose. Looked a bit haggard here, partied a bit too hard before the gig perhaps :-)
He probably never slept for 2 or 3 days🎉
I would like a bite from that mushroom please !?
Most common Bobby comment has to be the ones begging him to stop playing the slide
this is fantastic thank you. Can u tell me how this was recorded, obviously sbd but how did u get it so great on here.
Has Jerry's playing style changed at this point?
Who was the special guest?
