I created The Idaho Painter an alternative to to big box DIY video shows that have actors who only act like they can paint but really can barely act. My mission is to shatter the barriers of entry into painting and convince people that it can be a lot of fun painting and painting fun little projects on your own without an expensive professional painter. No experience is necessary.

We really love your videos! My wife and I have painted most of the exterior and much of the interior on our 6500 sq ft home to put it on the market and used many tips from your videos. The results have been excellent! We had two professional painters finish two high dormers (ladders set on the roof) that I didn't feel safe doing and they said numerous times that it looked like pros panted our house. A lot of thanks to your videos. Thank you!

I've watched nearly all you painting videos and picking up the best advice from you. I work for a friend and a lot of work we do are doors, cabinets and a ton of trim work. I almost cry watching you get to use an airless sprayer because he's got us using a roller and paint brush for them all, even though he has a spray machine. He says it takes longer to prep and clean up so brushing is better, I just shake my head Chris.
Only thing holding me back from starting my own business is learning what different paints to use and doing bids. Once I get the knowledge of paint I'm ordering you bidding course. I already own a residential sealcoating company, I just need more work and need to take it up a notch.
What's your advice with trim work even if the residents are home? Most of our work is all apartment turns.
Thanks Chris for taking your time to make these videos bud. The new format is awesome.

Your cabinet video is on point as well your bid and my price came out almost identical I woulda bid $5000 but the way you break it down is far more in depth than how I got to my number but I truly dig your style more and FYI I'm gonna use it if ya don't mind!

So Smooth! Looks like you are ~6 inches at most from the doors. I counted 9-12 sweeps per door. A 310 at 6 inches = 3 inches & doors are ~32 inches, so the above numbers must be true. So why at 6 inches or closer? It cant be overspray cause your outside, does it produce better finish? Just saw another pro painter do doors but near a foot away with 510, they started with one edge then to front door face spraying the outer edges of door face first, meaning outside right face, across bottom face, then up other side, across top face, then 3 vertical sweeps on door face and finish by spraying other side edge on door. Massive massive over spray of paint I could see. So 2 very different techniques, would love to know why you are so close. Great demo , thanks Chris!

(I know how you hate sanding) Thanks (I like how you masked the front end of your truck in the background on one of the last shots to protect against overspray)

hi Chris, i ve sprayed some doors, 2 sets of 2 doors, outside and connected them like you did in this vid. Later on I came to check and they where lying flat on the ground :-( because of some wind.So perhaps its better to join more doors to one another? , enjoying the new vids thanks.

Long time watcher & follower. thought id just add to the comments re the new format.
Youre a great painter but suck & comedy haha. I like that youre not doing the pre done introduction anymore and then introducing yourself again.
I don think stopping halfway through a vid is the way go either. one short breif pre done recording at the end is good. I like the Saturday questions being answered in your office.
Keep up the awesome work as always.

I sprayed them just like you did in this video (outside) with 311 flat tip (not FF) and got lines and hazing. Could it be because they dried too fast (it was windy). I sprayed very evenly and consistently, overlapping 50% just like in this video.

I used the info from this video to spray 5 interior doors, and 3 sets of double bi-folds. (all were pre-primed from HD, 2 coats on the visible side of the bi-folds, one coat on the inside of the bi-fold, and 2 coats on both sides of the "man doors", and I used just under 2 US gal. (maybe half a quart left)
One question I do have is what you use (if anything) under the bottom edge of the door to prevent the paint from bridging to the horizontal surface you have them standing on. Do you sink a couple of drywall screws in the bottom edge, or use painters triangles, or something else? (or nothing?)
Also, in some videos you are using the FoamPro door stands, and in others the Warner Quick Truss. Is one or the other better in some situations versus the other?
Thanks from north of the 49th.

Hey Chris, what do you suggest for painting a lot of doors at once, like 40 or 50? On a budget, looked at the door stands but way to expensive for this many doors in my budget, I saw some guys using metal truss hangers but wanted your input. This is for a new construction apartment building (biggest job of my life). I know you hate NC but what did you do when you first started out with this many doors to do at once?

You spoke about a "paint door hanger". What is that?

Could you please tell me what kind of paint you are using? I’ve used latex in the past and the finish never truly gets hard. I recently used BM Advance for my door casing and trim. It brushes on very well and levels but after a few months it isn’t hard. This past week I tried SW ProClassic waterborne alkyd on some cabinetry and after a week I can still dig my nails into it.
What can I use that will create a hard satin finish? Thanks.

You do the same method on a bare timber door?

What type of paint do you use- latex or oil based? I am getting ready to repaint all my interior doors from white to black. They are coated with latex right now. Some I will be replacing all together so I will buy them pre-primed , others- just repainting. I am seriously considering spray gun as I have done the brush before and that was a pain. Could you recommend a spray gun for a non pro? And is cabinet paint a better choice for interior doors as well? Also, if the doors has latex on it now, what’s the best way to prep it? I tried a de-glosser, but it didn’t work as well as I had imagined. It is very liquid and you still have to scrub the old paint a lot 😕

No one really uses oil based paint anymore
