I spend a lot of my winter months in pursuit of lake Champlain perch. I use maggots, Minnows and jigging spoons. Also do not be afraid to take those big summer spoons remove the hook and use them for a sinker
Hey Phil, those mats are good for raised cages holding baby chickens and hens....they interlock and they make the chicks feet warm. I mean they make a very good bottom mat/piece for chicks during winter or summer on high cages. Chicks grown better and less sicker off of he ground, including faster. It just makes it easier to clean. Just a note. If you're selling them, tell people it's good for that purpose too. That's what I use them for. The professional anglers use them under the tackle lit on the boat so they can dry their lures or have them readily accessible by hanging them there. They cut to size and you can add more foam "bars" across the mat to have some hook-hanging abilities. I'm boatless like Antonio so I don't do that.
My kids and I just watched before they left for school the episode and now i have been requested to take my kids for some ice fishing ;) .... Seems like always the natural bait will beat the artificial huh... man i feel jealous for the tasty food coming out of those sweet perch.... Thanks for another great episode full of tips guys.... stay warm....
Actually a lot of the time they will stock the lakes up just before the freeze and those fish have eaten artificial foods their entire life. At least over here in Idaho power bait works wonders this time of year.
Gama Isora that's a nice fact to know... i guess our kids will enjoy less and less the way nature works on it's own without human intervention... i mean like you said stocked fish being fed all the time instead of natural predators hunting all the time... here in jersey is the same they do the same stoking things. Im from Costa Rica and we don't do stoking or anything our water bodies are naturally full of fish all year round but im sure education will be a excellent complement down there in cr.
That must have been a miserable walk back with that wind howling like it was. I am thinking of ice fishing for the first time in my life this next winter. Live in Michigan 35 miles from breast bay but this last year got my Canadian fishing license & went fishing for those bows out of Wheatly & Erieau
walking that far.. wooo! then drilling holes.. lol bet ya slept good that night! Good video, was out fishing lake st clair 2 days ago. what kinda boots do you guys wear?
i love ur video so much! One thing I wanna know is should I fish all the way to the bottom( like 2-4feet above the bottom), or the surface of the lake ( just below the ice). And what are the differences between sunny day and windy, cloudy or snowing. Thank you
There are plenty of fish on the bottom but some fish do suspend as well, so it would depend what you are fishing for. In this episode we were fishing close to the bottom. Cloudy days seem to produce best results, especially if you are fishing shallow water. Windy days make it tough, unless you are in a hut....if it's snowing, that also is good for fishing :)
Perch on the Eastern Lake Erie basin will be in deep water, or in shallower areas, such as in marinas. Here is an episode e did last time the lake was frozen over: th-cam.com/video/O3RI_fQFN2Q/w-d-xo.html
Great video Ivo! Love the yellow perch. I was surprised you were still catching it at 45ft. Normally, my buddies and I (boat less anglers) would fish lake Ontario for jumbo perch but often be bombarded with gobies. From your experience, do gobies hunt in deep water?
+fingers maloy The Thundermist Lure Company "Stingnose Minnow"...they come as small as 1/16 oz and more variety of sizes right up to 1 3/4 oz - they are very realistic looking and are fantastic....also, the hook is at the head, for better hook ups :) store.thundermistlures.com/home.php?cat=66
HI Joe - the ice fishing for perch episode was filmed on Lake Erie in Ontario, out of Point Abino. Some years the lake does not freeze over, but it did that year and that is why we were able to get out there - otherwise, you can always make a trip to Lake Simcoe, and ice fish out of the town of Gilford - there are plenty of perch there....here is an episode we filmed there: th-cam.com/video/aaH4sXDwZ_0/w-d-xo.html
You're in there fishing and making Tony drill YOUR holes in three feet of ice with a hand auger??? Lost all respect for you guys. Next time close the shanty window behind the guy you're filming. Can't see a thing.
Thanks for the feedback and sorry you got that impression about the hole drilling....Antonio wanted to do the drilling that day, but usually, we take turns....we wouldn't force anyone to drill holes - anyhow, all the best to you and we didn't realize that window was causing such a blurr, but we learned from it :) Go luck on the water
suzy mcalister too bad you weren’t there sweetie you could’ve drilled all the holes and Antonio could’ve been fishing. Waaaah waaaah. I bet at least sweetie your X is happy he doesn’t have to listen to you whine and he’s a free and happy man out ice fishing. On a brighter note, I too lost all respect for these guys because they never called me to go with them.
that's always an option but we would rather not take the risk and remember, if anything were to happen, the insurance coverage would not cover it :) We needed the exercise anyhow :) :) :)
Hi Phillip - glad you enjoyed this perch episode and nice to hear you are enjoying fishing at the age of 11....if we ever get a chance to fish for peacock bass, we will :)
Okay have a good no great life I live in Florida I hope someday you might let me use some nice tackle just kidding but if you are serious I can really use it but. Ok fish on 😉
