My wife and i are very new to RVing. Bought our first RV (2005 21' Forest River) about 6 weeks ago. Last week we took it out on our maiden voyage. Overnight temps dipped to 27°. We found out that the furnace doesn't work. We also didn't have a space heater with us. Thankfully we had plenty of blankets and each-other!

There are teardrop manufacturers who make insulated trailers that you don't really have to heat. I'm putting in an order for one with RV water tank heaters, just to keep my water from freezing. When the tanks are full, I'll have a reservoir under the floor that stays between 40-60 degrees Fahrenheit.
Check out Colorado Teardrop. They'll build in just about any feature you want, to order. They're just down the road from me, down in Boulder, Colorado. I still haven't ordered mine, because I got laid up and couldn't pursue it. Heck, I couldn't even DRIVE! Heh. But that's on the agenda, although short-term, my extra money's going to the local food bank and other charities to help mitigate these insane lock-downs.
The "living" space in a teardrop is so small that you shouldn't need to do more than crack a window and hang a lantern if you're doing anything in there after dark in the dead of winter. During the day, the Sun's heat should be plenty. During overcast days in subzero temps, the same idea with a lantern should do the trick if your trailer is insulated. The Colorado Teardrops use an inch or two of foam insulation between inner and outer walls and under the flooring. My idea was to have the water tanks above that insulation layer, with small water-tank heater that draws very little current, and doesn't cost very much to purchase.
I calculated for the worst kind of Colorado cold, and the every-day-of-the-year sunshine you get up in the mountains (due to local convection cells that are stronger than any weather that blows through, punching a hole in even the cloudiest skies for a couple hours virtually every day). The idea was to be able to leave the thing unattended for possibly days, and letting solar electric and a big RV battery handle keeping the water tanks from freezing, without requiring external power.
As to the black linings in sleeping bags to accelerate the drying-out process, keep in mind that direct sunlight on some of those synthetic materials degrades those materials, which could limit the life of your sleeping bag. As for myself, in a small little space like a teardrop, I wouldn't be zipped into a sleeping bag at all. I'd have plenty of warm bedding. An unzipped sleeping bag or two or a down/synthetic comforter or two. Keeping a vent/window cracked during the night is big.
Using bedding that wicks moisture is also big. When Cosmo tells the story of the synthetic bags that iced-up in Iditarod (or something), you need to remember that the Eskimos and Inuit tribes handled those conditions for millennia before a few 21st-Century geniuses came along and froze their butts with synthetics. Felt and furs... Even straw/grass (stuffed in their boots)!
The teardrop Cosmo's using is built for summer recreation, with backup heater for chilly nights. There are good designs for severe cold. He's guessing-and-checking on how to keep condensation from being a problem, which is good, but keep in mind, he's using the teardrop in conditions for which it isn't really designed.
I'd be interested in some sort of fabric awning to keep the sun off and/or small air conditioner to keep the little greenhouse-type space from overheating in summer. I also calculated that, and you can just about power a little AC unit off a small solar array, as well. The pickup truck I bought has the trailer package, so a beefier charging system helps with that, if the AC draws more power than the solar's generating. Insulation also helps reduce the power requirements in the summer.

Lets see if your numbers pass the sniff test Harry! Please share the type of battery you are considering, total amp hour capacity of the battery array you are planning to use along with the power source, total demand for electric you will consume (include air conditioning) and the temperatures you plan on camping in (high and low). Lets have a look at what you are designing. Thanks =Cosmo

I have the same heater in my Boreas XT square drop camper. I have an 11 lb tank also, plus a spare tank. I also use the propane for a Dometic two burner pull out cook top. I purchased my camper in May of 2020, and have camped in it now maybe 20 to 25 nights. 10 or so of those nights were in the dead of winter. In the winter I only use a regular quilt blanket for warmth, and rely on the heater to warm up the space. I AM STILL NOT THROUGH THE FIRST TANK. I am so impressed with how efficient the heater is. I ran it for 9 hours each winter camp night keeping the inside temp at around 75 degrees. My only complaint with the heater is that the thermostat is slow to respond. It will get hotter than I want before it turns off, and will get colder than I want before it kicks back on. Throughout the night there is a temperature fluctuation of about 10 degrees, over and over again. Plus the fan is quite loud. Its hard to complain though about that when I think about the fact that this is the first camper I ever purchased and prior I was sleeping in a tent in the winter (my favorite time of year to camp).

I have a truck camper and it's inconvenient to pull my tank for weighing so I bought the same monitor you're using and it lasted for one tank of propane before it started reading 100% or 17%. I loved it, for the whole tank. The tank was brand new and I cleaned surface, re-gelled the sensor and even changed the battery. It was used in the warm Florida climate and out of the weather. I read reviews where others had the same problem. Now I pour a little hot water down the side and check the condensation line. I also have an accurate lpg handheld scale for tanks not mounted in the camper. I hope yours lasts longer than mine but keep us updated.

Thanks. I cant say how it will work. This is my second or third season with the tank monitor. I store the trailer in a garage between trips so its not getting the full experience. Two friends have them and so far so good. I called this company last year and a human answered! Very helpful person who gave me ideas for the small tank like turn it on its side to measure the odd shape. Thanks for sharing your experience, Thank You for watching. I want to be comfortable in any weather. You had the information that I was looking for and that was a rough estimate of how long propane would last. Will definitely be adding another tank to the plans. Thank you much! Love the vids. Subscribed!

I've got a 13' teardrop with propane heat. It came with a 5 gallon tank. I hate condensation. Water ruins stuff. I run the heater and leave the roof vent cracked open about an inch. That removes most of the moisture during the night and I turn on a 300 watt electric heater to take care of the rest in the morning. I also have a 13x13 freestanding awning I place on/over about a foot on one side of the trailer makes getting in and out during the rain a dry thing. Anyway, great vid!!

I lived in a summer mobile home while doing a building project. Condensation was a nightmare making everything damp until I put in a wood burner that kept me really warm and dried everything out.
The teardrop would be far too small for a wood burner but I wonder if a small dehumidifier or moisture absorber would help with internal condensation?

    • @CosmoWeems

I particularly enjoy camping in atrocious conditions, whilst dry, warm and comfortable!
A Fatsco Pet Stove in the camper and a Seek Outside Cub titanium tent stove hugely improves one's quality of life!
A lightweight collapsible stove with a flat cooktop in one's tent transforms wet and cold weather camping to unimaginable levels, heat, clothes and boots drying, warming of clothes and sleeping bag, cooking, baking and boiling water.
    The ambience is wonderful too.

Just so good,, I like seeing cold.
I also rely on propane for cooking and in the Winter for heating but I also have electric.
One tank holds enough gas for about one years' cooking, and about one months' heating, and to be honest it is only cold enough to warrant heating for 8-10 weeks.
I just always have a spare filled propane tank on hand, so 3 of them in a small apartment, I will leave rather rapidly if there was a fire!
I am very interested to know that there is a way to tell how much propane is left, thank you

I'm surprised your setup worked as well as it did. Small propane tanks are less reliable in cold temps than large ones. So I'd swap that for the largest one that would fit the mount. Swap to a 20lb at least, with the 20lb you can swap it as a core just about anywhere and not have to track down a fill station.

    • @CosmoWeems

Hi James. Thanks for your suggestion. The trailer has a 110 pounder on it because of the tongue weight the tow vehicle can handle. That trip was to see propane consumption with the meter. @@CosmoWeems Thanks. I've spent about three years in a 12x20 cabin. During the winter at about 30° nights over the week I can fire a Mr Buddy heater on a 20 lb cylinder. That is during the night less during the day and that is on I think the 9,000 BTU setting. I do have to crack a window for condensation when I'm running longer. Because I have several cylinders on hand I tend to just check mine by weight which is come along by experience I suppose in my particular situation. My simple plan is just to make sure I've got extra for either the trip or the circumstances when it all possible. I enjoyed the video.
In the next few weeks I will be building my own square drop trailer on a 5x8 utility that I purchased last week. Something I can take out on weekend trips and already have a loaded up. So I've been scouring TH-cam on teardrop and square drop trailers. Thanks for adding to it.

Most campers always carry TWO propane tanks. When one tank goes empty, the second tank takes over while you hunt for a propane supplier to fill the empty.

Why wouldn’t you get the bigger tank and have less worries and be able to cook with propane as well??

    • @CosmoWeems
      @CosmoWeems  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

By having a monitoring system I can tell when I will run out. I have that learning curve now. The tow vehicle has a weight limitation called tongue weight. Look it up. I am at the max for my tow vehicle. A larger tank would put it over the limit. But I did a winter trip and I brought 3 10 pound tanks. But I can distribute the weight correctly th-cam.com/video/bVj8T1ronQs/w-d-xo.html 𝕋𝕙𝕒𝕟𝕜 𝕐𝕠𝕦 𝕗𝕠𝕣 𝕨𝕒𝕥𝕔𝕙𝕚𝕟𝕘! Hi Mark, The bears live there and sometimes get curious. At this location I have seen bears twice. Both time they were 2 adolescent bears traveling together. Probably just sent out to live on their own by Mom. Black bears are not aggressive unless the human provokes them. Both times I told them to leave and they did. Wonderful experience to see the second smartest animal in North America. Second only to humans (sometimes smarter than humans ha ha). Regards =Cosmo
