When I see a Japanese plane I always assume it'll probably outturn me (I usually fly spitfires or other birtish planes) and will always approach a Japanese plane with more caution due to PTSD from early warthunder days thinking I could take Zeros in dogfights and getting absolutely destroyed.
Bruh i played WT for 1 year now and damn thank goodness my friend (3 years experience) told me japanese engine are quite weak Edit: that knowledge alone made me more caution and after my first match fighting a zero (gets gangbanged by another zero) shit was terrifying lets be honest here
I havent played WT for 2 years. But this was one of my comfy planes to fly (along with the Ki200 and the Spaghetti Vampire ). Those Type5 cannons are just so freaking powerful.
@@Dave-_- Ive had my Sky Cancer phase as well (when it had airspawn), But clubbing everyone got boring eventually. With the Ki200, its the challenge that motivated me (small fuel and ammo) and it paid in dividends when I got a lot of aces and also an almost 2:1 K:D on the thing.
These guns are probably the best prop fighter guns in the game. These monsters don't "hit" or "critical hit" they just remove the enemy plane from the existence with any kind of mercy.
I just got the T-2 and went through this thing on the way. It's VERY underwhelming. Funny how it felt a lot more powerful when I faced it. Which is why I think it's very important to play as many planes as possible in order to learn their strenghts and weaknesses. Especially if you are struggling against them. Speaking of weaknesses, how about some Ta-152 C3 or maybe F11F?
I'm relieved that i am not the only one who doesn't know what to do with this plane. You face Spitfires that will have 2-3km altitude on you that outturn and outrun you, as well as jets. Speaking of, this feels a lot like a jet without the speed.
Dunno bout everyone, but i absolutely adore this plane, I dont use it like any other plane, best game i had was in ground RB, 5 ground and 7 air kills without dying.
I'd not say the Shinden has exactly a bad maneuverablity - it does get hella good around 500-600 km/h, but even so - it loses energy pretty quickly too That being said, one of my favorite planes to fly tbh
last time i flew this saw su11's next to me on the runway, laughed and clicked RTH - props need to top off at like 5.3-5.7, there's almost no difference from mid to high tier props yet there's a massive BR spread.
As a bit of a counter-point to you saying this plane is a turd : Whilst it might lack the the department you really want, it's actually 1 of my favorite planes to fly! Why? First i love the unorthodox design of this thing, second of all, it's firepower combined with it's layout make it a absolute monster in high speed fights. It's 1 of my favorite BnZ'ers and to my expierence, can duel a F2G if you can get the fight to a high-enough speed (~600 KP/H out of my head) due the F2G completly compressing whilst you barely compress untill you actually rip. I think it's more of a playstyle preference that makes you feel like this plane is bad, but i love it.

Using MEC on this plane unlocked a lot of potential for me. I quite enjoy it and have a decent KD and winrate with the few games I've played while grinding into tier 5. This and the Ki-84 Ko were my grinders. 1) Climb MEC at 95% Radiator 95% prop pitch stock mixture 60% or 100% doesn't matter it's not modeled 2) Speed Mec 65% prop pitch 10% radiator stock mixture - this is the only way to achieve max speed regardless of altitude 3) Short dives use auto or 100% prop pitch but you will increase speed incredibly quick with throttle on 4) Long dives use 100% prop pitch but lower engine power or 0 and it acts as a nice air brake 5) NOTE: If you get wing damage AT ALL even yellow and minor in just one spot go back to base or be extremely careful with turns and don't go vertical you will 100% end up in a flat spin The guns on this thing set you up to learn trajectories for R2Y2 or Kikka so it's worth playing this until Tier 5 for at least that. Although to be honest, they don't have a big learning curve. They are so fast without much drop that the are pretty easy to smash with. One burst will also deconstruct anything if they hit, even the biggest bomber especially if you tap a wing. I really enjoy flying this plane to be honest it's interesting but once you understand her dang she performs and outruns 90% of planes at its BR.
Oh yeah, land FAST otherwise there's no way to keep the nose down when you don't have the ammo to weight it down. I usually land around 260kph+ It's not fun to land lol.
To be fair to those of us that always avoid it, I remember when it was an utter beast in 2013-2015 or...it was just that playing allied teams with 7 bombers on at the time was an awful frustrating experience.

If you want to have fun killing bombers, J7w1 is actually great. If you are lucky, you can get 4 bomber kills per match, return to af, and load ground belt.
imho you should try it, the stock grind is painful but spaded it get decent enough to have fun with it. I remember it being worse than currently you either climb or group with teammate to get good result also defyn didn't mention the excellent low speed rudder... just play it
It brings me joy that you covered this plane in its current state and I loved the video, great flying as always even if the plane doesn't have amazing performance. It's just really unfortunate to see in what state this plane currently is, it used to be quite literally overpowered/overperforming back in 2016 (yes i know it's a long ass time ago). It overperformed to such a degree that it could accelerate in a dive with the early 7.0 jets, role like a 190 (with the boosted ailerons) at almost all speeds, have insane energy retention (out of a dive to the deck going about 800 KpH and a zoom back straight up would leave you at 3.5km with 300-350 KpH), a turnrate that was much better that it is currently, an elevator authority at low speeds that would put most planes to shame and favourable stall characteristics. Nice flying! o7
Defyn, keep in mind this plane has some wonky prop pitch management. In a straight, don't use more than 65%, and only use 100% as an air brake, or in a climb.
What would fix the J7W1? A lower BR? Let it have really good top speed at least for his new BR? And just play it as a dart? That would also mean a small amount of altitude/climb boost. In an ideal world, gayjin would be competent, wouldn't hate Japan, and would care about their own game.
35m/s climb rate, low speed maneuverability (canards + almost delta wing), tough damage model (it's heavily armored), it shouldn't even get to pull 13Gs, historically it would rip above 7Gs but was a high altitude/slow speed monster
whats great about the shinden? - It has the burstmass of an A10 - tiny wheels on the rudders - when you get shot at your tail doesnt break off, your nose does - flaps decrease lift as they work AGAINST your elevator (yes, this is a thing) - this is warthunder and people will still go headon with 4x30s All jokes aside, it looks cool and you can make it work. But people play like absolute toddlers if they dont kill you in their first pass (as can be seen in the video). Funny when played in a platoon.
Lol sorry you had such a rage inducing game with this plane. I think it does have some hidden advantages, namely very good high-altitude maneuverability and decent energy retention in a flat turn. You can dogfight fighters above 4000m quite well because of big propeller, huge control surfaces and extra canards. It also has exceptional handling in a high speed dive, as you exploited quite well. You're absolutely right about the one-pass and run away thing because it all falls apart at low speeds and altitudes. I kind of view it as the companion plane to the R2Y2, another japanese glass cannon with 30mms. The R2Y2's secret is its low-speed maneuvering and impossible stall speed, but the J7W1 is the high-speed only version. 50% of games will be highly unfavorable to play it in because it's such a specific weapon, but those other games where you annihilate the entire enemy team are very very satisfying.

You can stay in the air for a very long time and get a solid 5 tank kills while taking down enemy attackers for free as well

You probably the only one who plays this J7W1 today or whole week. And you destroy people (in our context it is not a plane's achievements, but your skill). And destroy them quite good even on this thing. So, of course people will fear this thing, because it is very rare to see, and when it is appears it is some skillful guy, who destroys. It is seem like some sort of legend of J7W1.
With the AN/M3 nerf this plane goes up in the armament hierarchy, but yeah historically made to be an interceptor, no interceptor spawn. Literally one of the few planes which would still not be overpowered with an airspawn because of how uncompetitive its flight model is, and then XP-50 gets it. Because gaijoob needs to feed their family, even though they can buy more calories than the BI can generate.

Exactly, this plane could easily be at 5.3, and still be average there.
I really like this plane, but the repair and the pain of air rb 6.0 makes it about as fun as being pissed on by an elephant

The main selling point of this plane is the guns, nothing else
With the AN/M3 nerf this plane goes up in the armament hierarchy, but yeah historically made to be an interceptor, no interceptor spawn. Literally one of the few planes which would still not be overpowered with an airspawn because of how uncompetitive its flight model is, and then XP-50 gets it. Because gaijoob needs to feed their family, even though they can buy more calories than the BI can generate.
