The Quick and EASY Way to REPAIR Your Rod Guides-(Tournament Fishing Hack)-Bass Fishing Tip

- If you fish for bass long enough, you will inevitably break some equipment. The purpose of this video is to help guide you through my process of repairing broken guides in a quick and easy manner. Like the disclaimer said in the video, I am NOT responsible for replacing your equipment if you do in fact burn your rod in half. It's a risky move, but if you do it correctly, it can be a money saving hack. I hope you enjoy this tip video, plenty more where that comes from!

I've been building my own fishin poles since 1969 and I took delight for the 30 years I went paddlefishing in fixing broken rods which usually happened every day of a 10 day camp. Your fix is mighty crude, but it will work. I thread wrapped all my fixes and used a low gloss thread finish in camp, probably for effect. Metal ferrules also make quick repairs on tragic fractures when you are 150 miles round trip from a new rod. I never used fire on a rod, fiberglass burns.
I'd cut every thing off with a sharp knife and maybe sand it a bit with some 400 grit I'd carry.

This is very helpful today I found out that two of my rods have broken guidance so this will help me out to get them fixed since it’s really cold out here in Northern Illinois thank you for sharing

That looks pretty dang professional to me. I use braided line and super glue to put my guides on. Use the super glue gel to place the rod guide and as the epoxy. Using the electrical tape is a great idea. Holding the guide where you want it as the glue dries is always the hardest part.
That’s very true. There are better ways out there, but it will definitely get the job done.

Good vid. I’ve don’t this with straight super glue and it’s been holding up for a couple years. I didn’t hear the epoxy I just took a knife and worked the epoxy off just like taking fletchings off a arrow.

Instead of tape, hit the glue with activator. 2P 10 Activator hardens cryo glue instantly.

Great tips! I like the super glue to initially hold your guide. I use a heat gun to loosen the epoxy and then scrap it off. Also you can put tape just above and below your threads so after you get the epoxy on you remove the tape and have nice clean lines.
A heat gun works wonders. That’s definitely the safer route. I like the tape idea too. Thanks for watching!

That’s a good idea. I saw Fish Whisperer use one to reel in a fish the other day too. A drill has a lot of purposes! Lol
I make custom rods and this is about as far of as you can get to going it properly. but i see when you have to have it done quick and not knowing how to do it properly in the first place it is a ok temporary fix except burning the epoxy on the rod. please take your time and peel the thread and epoxy off.
Jackson- Thank you for taking the time to tell me how incorrectly I did my guide repair. Like I said multiple times in the video, this is a very rough job and far from professional. Thank you for your tips.
@@AndrewUpshawFishing i didn't mean to criticize you and your father i'm just trying say it ok fix except burning the epoxy on the rod. when you apply direct heat to the rod even for a few seconds, you damage the blank in ways you may not be able to see. so even if it looks ok and you go to set the hook on a fish, the blank can break much easier than if you took your time (5 minutes or less) and peeled it off. I am talking from experience. so it is easier to take a razor blade cut a little bit of the thread on the guide foot so you don't score the blank and peel off the thread. again I didn't mean to criticize you and your father and I apologize and i'm truly sorry for that.
It’s all good buddy. I really do appreciate the feedback, even if it’s negative. I’m not a pro at repairing rods, so any additional tips are welcome.
I'm not a big fan of this technique, from the fire and 5 min epoxy.. It's not for me, BUT! it's like you said Andrew, it's a quick fix, in a pinch or a in the bush you make it work.
I repair rods year round, I don't build them I simply repair them, self taught and always learning how to be creative with some repairs. That rod you snapped with the trolling motor, I can fix those now ;)
2 Things I would add to your cautions, #1 Careful with fire!! The closer you get to the tip the weaker the rod.. You'll burn through it QUICK #2 Knife needs to be sharp and take your time because 1 bad slip and you can scar the carbon and on your next hookset your rod will snap..
You’re exactly right. It definitely can happen. But in a tight spot, it will work. Dad uses a razor blade knife just for that reason too. Thanks for the comment buddy!

I've really never used epoxy. I have used super glue & then wrap with thread & then paint with clear fingernail polish. I know you can't do anything about it but all I really learned was how to hit the skip ads button.Way to many commercials.
Using fingernail polish is a good idea as well.
No need to set on fire and ruin your rod. Just heat it.
Better off doing it right. It dosen't really take any longer. Watch other videos to learn how to do it right. There are lots out there.
