    Very cool to see rod repair actually being done. With the outrageous cost of new stuff these days, a little bit of knowledge, skills, and persistence can be extremely beneficial to those of us who don't have a lot of money to throw around. Thanks. 👍🇺🇸

    I've been wanting to get into building rods and repairing rods... I got into working on/building firearms and do a bunch of tinkering with hunting rifles every year and all the people I do work for also fish so this has been something I've been thinking about for a while now. I know it can't be extremely hard and it'll give me a little extra income every year so I gotta just dive I to it and figure it out. Great video as always keepem coming brother!!!

    Hey Matt. I’m going to do exactly that. I’m going to take up rod building this winter and see how I do with it.
    It seems like choosing the right blank could be a real challenge for the uninformed such as myself.

  • @comfortablynumb9342
    @comfortablynumb9342 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    The more I learn about rods the more I want to start building my own. I was using the Ugly Stik GX2'S and other composite models and recently I got a couple graphite Ugly Stik Carbon Inshore rods. They have fast actions, they're very light and way more sensitive. Composite rods are good for live bait, trolling and some lures but they're not great for light jigs or Texas rigged soft plastics. The graphite rods are much better. But they're expensive. I'd like to start with a 7'6" rod specifically for 1/8-3/8 jig heads and soft plastics if you can recommend a blank.
    Last Friday I went to a tackle shop I'd never been to. It's almost all saltwater stuff. I told him about Core Tackle Hover Rigs and Tush hooks and he wrote it down. We looked at Google so he could see them and he immediately understood why they're good. So I hope he makes an order and starts selling your stuff. The other local shops didn't seem interested or the wrong person was working. Anyway I've told some places to try to help you out.

      This should be encouraging to you. Check out how Kistler Rods builds their rods. No fancy equipment necessary. Just attention to detail and experience.

    • @secretbassrigs
      @secretbassrigs 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      G.Loomis NRX seems to be the go to world wide. For something cheaper, match up the specifications. I'm not exactly sure, but I seen to recall KISTLER is starting to sell Rod Blanks now.

      @comfortablynumb9342 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@secretbassrigs I was curious about the blanks Matt uses but I appreciate your help. I was hoping he'd tell me the number for the right blank from the brand he uses. Those graphite Ugly Stiks are nice but they don't have a 7'6" model or a lighter model, just what I'd call a medium and a medium heavy in 7'. They definitely cast farther, they're more sensitive and they're lighter than the composite rods. I fish in the saltwater, mostly for flounder but I also fish for redfish and trout, and this will be my first winter on the Chesapeake so I'll try to catch stripers. I use 10 lb braid most of the time and the heavier action rod will probably get 15 lb braid. I'd like to build a 7'6" rod specifically for flounder on the beach and from piers or docks or my kayak. They can hit pretty hard sometimes but they can be very subtle too. So maybe what I want doesn't exist, but I need a very sensitive rod that can throw jigs and Texas Eye jigs and stuff like that a long way, be able to set the hook yet sensitive enough to feel a soft bite. So I think another 6" would help with distance, but I don't know about the rest.

      @MattStefanFishing  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Go for it! I’d recommend contacting Mudhole and they can match up their MHX blanks to any other manufacturer blanks so you get what you are looking for. Also thanks for the Core Tackle support!

    one thing thats worked for me for getting the last line guide off, i heat up the very end of the guide, and let the heat conduct through the metal to loosen the epoxy so i dont damage the very end of the rod blank with the flame of the lighter. Butane burns extremely hot, nearly 4000 degrees F, and ive damaged a couple of rod blanks before someone gave me that tip a few years ago. This only really works well if the ceramic insert has popped out and you need to fully replace the tip, i wouldnt do it if youre just regluing the tip back on, but its still a pretty safe way to make sure you dont damage your blank though.

    Yes Matt, I'm guilty of it also! Just finished one for my manicanic. Just haven't got it to him yet. Ceramic guides are by far the best, but the ceramic can also crack. This is bad on the line as it nicks and cuts the line. So guys keep an eye on this as well.

    I love doing rod repair. However, you make it look so easy that I'm afraid folks will screw it up the first few times. It's super easy, for us. Not that it's hard, but proper technique takes a few runs. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND people take your advice and look at the Mudhole tutorials.

    • @StoutSportsmen
      @StoutSportsmen 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Mixing epoxy can be the issue but you need to make sure the epoxy is exactly the same or it will take longer to dry. Room temperature can also make it take longer.
