    As far as people not knowing the front from the back, I’ve seen interviews, of more than one country music “star”, that had their hat on backwards.😂😂

      Same thing happens with bicycle helmets. My town had a dorky mayor who did a bicycle safety video and his helmet was on backwards the whole time😂 All of us bike shop owners were in hysterics about it for weeks.

    This was a great video. You guys mentioned that new hat owners don’t know how to take care of their hats but I would say lots of people don’t know. I’ve worn hats my whole life and learned some new things today so thank you for this video. There is so much misinformation from the internet. So many people think they have all the answers but in reality they don’t have any answers. Jobe, you said that even high X hats have rabbit in them. My daily winter hat is a Rodeo King 100X that says “100X Pure Beaver” on the sweatband. Are you saying that isn’t true?

    Y'all make some nice videos. I'm old - actual Boomer - and I'm on a horse daily as we own a small horse farm. I actually like the way some straw hats feel, but I don't have much luck with them. We get quite a bit of rain at times and a straw is just not much protection and the rain seem to destroy them quickly.
    I'm actually cheap and even though my least expensive hat is probably 1; I consider a felt hat a much better value than straw. All of my hats are 100% beaver or beaver belly and they are SO much better in the rain (and snow during winter). I do have to clean them as you reference, and occasionally I use my wife's steamer (for clothes - It's a big machine with a hose and attachments kept in her laundry room). However I don't have to replace my felt hats - even when they get stepped on by a horse, I can send it back to my maker or the manufacturer and they can make it look like new. I find straw hats last a short while and can easily get messed up - and heck 4-5 straws equal the price of a cheap felt.
    I've actually had some folks ask why I'm not following the 'seasons' for hat wearing...HAHAHA - I usually respond that seasons are for my wife and her purses not a man's hat. Honestly till I saw this video I wasn't aware that folks had a season for hats - for men anyway - but as I said I'm old. Again, you guys have some great info and I actually subscribed to your channel.

      Thanks for watching and commenting, it helps a lot. I love my all beaver hats, it my preference. I will never get the full benefit of all beaver because I’m hot that hard on my hats, but they hold their shape much longer and are easier to take care of. People love to follow the seasons and I don’t get it myself. The real truth is felt is the most appropriate and most formal option, straw “season” just means it’s appropriately warm enough to wear straw. I wear a felt till it gets over 90° consistently, but I still wear felt if I’m going to be inside or shooting a video.

    I would advise against using tape!!! I had a seamstress explain and show me using tape tends to leave a bit of residue behind and then things will stick faster to it.
    Best to just stick with a good brush or a damp cloth even.

      I bought a couple of 5“ x 2“ rectangles of a very porous orange foam from a hat store years ago. They were made for cleaning hats. I got one for dark hats and one for light hats. I use them dry and brush (not rub) with them. Between those chunks of foam and a horse hair brush, I don’t do anything else to my hats. They never get dirty, just dusty, so I guess it’s kind of a very light duty cleaning.

  • @prodigy6000
    @prodigy6000 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Stetson uses a black powder on their hats ...they told me this after I noticed on my new black skyline it was coming off if I rubbed it. I have no idea why they would do this.

    • @CowboyCartel
      @CowboyCartel  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Generally, powder is applied to white of all factor and silverbelly of lower quality. I have seen black powder on hats, but that’s dust from sanding the hat and can last a long time, especially if it’s not worn often. It’s also the reason you see water spots a lot of times. The water washes the sanding dust away and the hat just needs to be brushed more often. Thanks for watching, and the comment.

    I guess I’m an old guy now and things have changed. When I was younger 100 X hat was something we never saw but knew it was out there. That was 100% beaver. I finally found one of your videos that told me what a 1000 X is. Is there a video that is totally dedicated to telling us what the various X designations mean. And which of the major companies use which grading system. It seems there is not an industry standard.

    • @TucoDog-ho6fw
      @TucoDog-ho6fw 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I appreciate the fact that you saw my comment, but I’d like an answer is there a video dedicated to explaining what the X system is. I understand if it’s not standardized from manufacturer to manufacture, that could be impossible. How about a video like I’m describing dedicated strictly to American, or rodeo king? those appear to be the two lines that you concentrate most on. Thanks.

    • @CowboyCartel
      @CowboyCartel  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      There is not an industry standard which is one of my biggest complaints. I spent months just trying to decipher the code for American Hat Co but it seems pretty close to an industry standard. The idea is one percent beaver per X starting at 6x… however anything 6x to 10x is pretty much an all rabbit hat. I don’t know if they are lying when they put beaver on the sweat or if they genuinely put 6-10% beaver in the hat. I just call it an all rabbit hat. 20x is about where you see true beaver percentages. 100-200x is all beaver with different blends of quality beaver hair and finishing. American has some of the best finishing of any hat in the large scale production and a lot of even custom hats. 500x is all beaver belly and 1000x will be more for feel and look. It will be beaver belly blended with some exotic hair used for feel. Mink for American. You also usually get solid gold and real jewels in the buckle set. Thanks for watching

    • @CowboyCartel
      @CowboyCartel  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It is not safe. And your skin has enough oil to condition. At some point you may need to replace the sweat. I think it’s in our video with Andy he goes through a sweat band every year or two. Some people just have a different reaction with hats. All mine look new inside, and I wear a hat 90% of the time I leave the house. Conor can trash a hat in a month.

      Its not going to take anything off that wouldn't have come off on its own. If its on there loose enough for tape to pull it off its not really part of the structure of the hat. like we said when talking about sanding, there is a ton of fiber in that hat that is compressed, when you start sanding you can quickly have what looks like a second hat on the floor. most of what comes off with tape is dust.

    • @CowboyCartel
      @CowboyCartel  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That’s about 4 sizes and if you could get it stretched that much, something is going to break, most likely the sweat band and the hat band. These tips are more for a hat that once fit comfortably and shrunk over time to poor maintenance. Your best bet is to sell it and replace it.
