As a member of the older generation, our rules were. 1. Never wear a hat indoors unless it's a bar / dance hall. 2. You can wear boots without a hat, but you never wear a hat without boots. 3. Always set you hat down on the crown, never set it down on the brim. 4. Never set your hat on the bed. 5. Straw hats are for the heat, felt hats for for dress or cold. 6. Always remove your hat for The National Anthem and talking to women.

I wear my hat inside except when I'm sitting for a meal.

@@thecollective1584 Well, I am a 9th Generation Texan who's family arrived here in 1835 (from Kentucky). I grew up on a farm / ranch. I was in 4H as a young one then spent 4 years in FFA showing steers. Rode bulls in high school (my little brother was a bull dogger), etc... I am now 61 and living on my own land. I have been living and dressing this way (except for my time in the military) my entire life. If you didn't take your hat off when you came inside at my house, my dad would rip it off your head and send you on your way. My 10+ years active duty, you were never allowed, by regulation, to wear a cover indoors unless you were standing inspection or performing some other duty that required a cover. So, it's been ingrained in me for a VERY long time.

"Never wear a hat indoors unless it's a bar / dance hall" My mother was of that stare of mind, but I disagreed. In a church, or at the dinner table I would take it off, during the National Anthem it went over my heart. I observed the rules of my hosts when I was a guest. So most of the time I took it off at the door. At formal events it was depending on the group and their rules of etiquette. You can be put in a position where, when you take your hat off you are being impolite, just as easily as if you keep it on. I normally don't remove it when eating at a restaurant either. However, that changes at a fine dining establishment, where I might not wear either my hat or boots. I always felt more comfortable in boots when I wore a hat, but that rule was never brought up.so far as I can recall.
The only hard and fast rules I kept were never touch another man's hat period. If you had to move it, like you were driving all night in a car or a truck, then Ask Permission first! The rules you quote were taken from the set of manners that were for men when hats were a common thing for them to wear. Western Ranchers, cowboys, and rodeo cowboys modified them some what. I was raised in that environment. It isn't easy to assess where a person is from all the time, but I tried to adjust my manners accordingly. It's a sad thing that children being taught manners has become rarer over my lifetime. Having a single standard all places; all the time, would make it a lot easier.

I live in Texas. We typically have about nine months of summer, one month of autumn and two months of winter. So it's straw hats for the vast majority of the year. Felt hats are usually reserved for what little cold weather we get and when its time to dress up for more formal occasions like weddings, nice dinners, etc.

I’ve heard all these guidelines before, but it’s a good reminder. I usually follow all of them except for talking to women. I do remove my hat when I’m introduced to a woman, or I’m introducing myself, but I’ll usually put my hat back on after introductions.
The only things you didn’t mention that I would have is 1. Remove your hat during the national anthem, 2. Remove your hat when the flag is being raised or lowered, and 3. I always remove my hat during a prayer.

I definitely feel hat etiquette changes depending on region. Etiquette in my area (Missouri/Arkansas) is a bit different from what you stated, and it's quite interesting as some parts are the same, but others are different. For example, messing with someone else's hat and grabbing the hat by the crown is the same. Though I want to point out what's different for me as I think it's interesting...
    - You typically take off your hat when being introduced to a lady. However, if the lady is also wearing a western hat, then just tipping your hat is a fair sign of acknowledgment and respect.
    - You are welcome to wear your hat when dancing with a lady.
    - Wearing a hat when indoors or eating is considered fine. However, it is considered rude to not take off your hat for the anthem or when entering banks, elevators, and offices.
    - Willingly taking off your hat and placing it on the head of a lady (or man, no judgement here), is a way of saying you are taking them home for the night. The exception to this is family members, in which passing your hat onto them is a sign of respect and honor.

As someone who started wearing a cowboy hat 2 decades ago, I found the "list" of rules where I could wear my hat absoultely rediculous. After hearing all the rules from so many people, it boiled down to: You can wear it in your house, and you can put it on when you get out of the car, but then your suppose to take it before you enter 90% of inside buildings. Basically, they had it so I only wore my hate from getting out of a car till we got where we were going, then take it off again. Insane. I NOW will only take it off at the movies; church; or if a host requests it.

Well, as someone that's been wearing a hat for the past 55 years (from around the time I was 6 or 7 years old) I grew up with the "rules" as I described. Those of you that think it's part of some "costume" or has no tradition behind it, will do as you please while the others , like me, will just look at you like you're some drug store "cowboy".

  • @dabeln1

My favorite point you made is that these are guidelines. There's never any good reason to lose your cool over someone not following these rules. If someone is being nasty to you because you wear the hat, then you can start using the rules against them to let everyone see them for the snakes they are. Wear the hat and have a good time doing it!

Here’s what I was taught. in common areas inside of a building, hallways, auditoriums, it’s OK to wear a hat. When you go into private residence or private office, the hat should be removed. you can wear a hat into an elevator unless a woman is present, at which point, the hat should be removed. always tip your hat when meeting or saying good bye to a woman. Never wear a hat to the dinner table. There is always a safe place to put your cowboy hat. I will put the hat brim down if there’s an area for the front third of the hat to hang over the shelf otherwise the hat should be placed crown down.

Dunno if someone else has commented it, but the tradition of taking hats off indoors actually dates back to medieval times with armor and helmets.
It was considered rude to not take ones helmet off inside of another man's home/place of business, because it implied that you did not trust him to protect your head for you. Basically implying that he was either treacherous or that his dwelling was unsafe to enter.

I agree with most of these with the exception of a couple. I wear a felt year round just cause I find it soaks up sweat better but like you said that’s just personal preference. The other is that putting a hat on a bed is bad luck. I fall into the group that believes a hag is a tool to swat cattle and wear in the rain and squash the occasional spider with. That being said putting it on a bed is no different than leaving a wrench or hammer on a bed. That’s really just my opinions though, to each their own.

    • @xblackdog
      @xblackdog 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I wonder if the origin of the bad luck bed one is because work hats often get filthy, and putting them on your bed is kind of gross/unhygienic. Perhaps, people who did it would get sick, and given our understanding of how germs work is relatively new, the superstition began that it brought bad luck. This is purely speculation though.
Also, I don't wear felt year round, but just about year round. I think the problem a lot of people run into is they don't realize they can remove the liner (or at least you usually can). The satin liners retain a ton of heat, and removing them allows the hat to breath.

One of the exceptions to the felt when it’s cold, straw when it’s hot rule is the niche of the horse breed show world. In Paints, Pintos, and Quarter horses, almost everyone used felt black hats all year round as a part of the uniform. Maybe that is changing now but it’s still the primary dress hat used. I believe this is due to the felt hats being for formal events.

It made a lot of sense during the time it was established. Way back when, everyone wore hats (not many as fancy as today, but hats none-the-less). These hats were important tools to keep you dry and warm in the rain/snow, and cool in the sun (so, to protect you from the elements). So because of this, wearing a hat indoors was the equivalent of saying "Your place is so rundown, that it's like I'm still outside, and need my hat to protect me."
Nowadays most wear hats as fashion accessories, with some wearing them for utility (and often a bit of both). As such the idea that you're effectively saying someone's place is a sh*thole has worn away a lot. It also is less frowned upon because day to day life in general has become more informal, and very few places still accommodates for coats and hats anymore (which, here in Oregon where everyone still wears raincoats I have never understood).

EDIT: In Montana, we wear our hats regardless of where we are, only taking it off when we get home. The only time our hat comes off outside the house is for the American Flag. We remove it when the Flag comes into sight and stays off until the Flag leaves our sight. That's respect for the Flag and the National Anthem.

Much as I like my hats, I leave them home when I'm in Germany. A) Their house, their rules. B) "Even think about wearing that on the plane, and it's the last thought you'll have on this earth". I happen to have this thing about my wife, who just happens to be from Germany. The hats stay home, my wife's blood pressure drops, and I keep my thoughts to myself. Tscha, so geht's. Halt die Ohren steif, es könnte schlimmer sein.

I agree with all of these. A more simple way I perform the Respect the Ladies rule is if I’m out and about and introducing myself to a woman I don’t know, I remove the hat. Or if it’s somebody’s mother/grandmother that I know, I remove the hat. Respectful to all of those you need to make a good impression with and you don’t have to keep taking your hat off every time your female friends want to talk

Stuck in Michigan but born and raised in Fort Worth. I go on Friday nights to a small dance hall for line dancing. I was shocked that this girl ( acting drunker than she really was) dashed up to this young man and ripped his hat off and danced off with it and was playing with it. She was flipping it and almost dropped it. One of my friends grabbed it from her and returned to him. He was thankful. The *drunk* girl was upset and asked why we gave it back to him. He then told her it was a 200 dollar hat not a cheap 5 below hat. She rolled her eyes and said she was just playing. He said he didn't like that. Needless to say she disappeared and we made a new friend who now has become a regular at the dance hall.

This is generally how we do it down here in my small Texas town and the surrounding area. The gentleman tilts his hat back as the couple walks onto the dance floor (just enough to clear her hat) and the lady wears her hat as she normally would. At the end of the dance, the gentleman straightens his hat as they leave the dance floor.
Being 5'6", I learned years ago to also tilt my hat back when dancing with a taller lady, even if she is only slightly taller or sometimes even my height. I learned this the hard way, after I dinged a friend in her eye with the brim of my hat.

A little historical context as well. The Hat has been a symbol of affluence and status since ancient times. It's also in modern times analogous to the idea of the "helmet" especially those hats built for a specific purpose rather than decoration or opulence. The cowboy hat definitely falls into the latter group. As such it would be customary to doff your hat in a show of peace as its a symbolic gesture that you are showing voluntary vulnerability to someone else. This eventually came to be common etiquette in general with headwear, or at least the more formal types which cowboy hats kind if satisfy a sort of in-between if workweek and formal wear.
This is just my two cents. I dont really have any historic sources at hand but if needed I can look some up as I'm recalling from memory.
I have been lucky enough to inherit my grandfather's Resistol. It's a treasure that I maintain and holds even more significance than if it were just mine alone.
Cheers, jeep up the good work!

My guidelines came from an 83 Montana cowboy generally the same although you can let a kid or a woman touch or momentarily wear your hat, only take it off if there is a safe place to put it, boot are not required as a cowboy should have the proper tools and boots are not always the right tool (I think the context was fishing and driving) My favorite thing he said wasn’t a rule but it’s a funny statement “don’t wear a Mule hat its called that because you look like a dumb a** when you wear one”.

I saw a comment below about it being okay to let a kid or woman wear your hat.
I'm okay with letting a child try on my hat. It makes the child happy, is good "PR" for the cowboy image, and can make a positive influence on the child's future thoughts. Just make sure you help them with the hat.
I'm also okay with letting a lady try on my hat, but keep in mind there are two scenarios. Some will come and ask to try it on. Usually these are the younger ones, maybe their first time in a country bar or at a rodeo. They probably want to take pictures or see how they look in hats. Or maybe they are doing it as a way to strike up a conversation with you. Just watch for the ones that want to walk over to their friends and show it off. I've never had one try to steal a hat, but it would still be easy to lose each other in a crowd.
Then there are the other ladies, the ones that know an old rodeo tradition (that I don't hear about anymore). There's an old saying, "Everything under a cowboy's hat belongs to him." Part of that is that she has to take it and put it on herself; you cannot put it on her. I've met a few ladies that have grabbed my hat and put it on, and I look at them and say, "Do you know what you just offered me?" then I explain about "everything under a cowboy's hat" and that she just offered to take me home. Not one of them knew what she did, but I was also in places like Houston, Las Vegas, and other big cities.
