      How many times do you actually track the cymbals separately?

    • @jurgenschuler8389
      @jurgenschuler8389 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      How much do you typically compress on the way in? To get the sound you want? Do you intentionally leave room for further compressing during mixing? If so, how much? Do and to what extend do your answers depend on the location where you tracked the drums?

      There is no lack of info available on drum recording basics but some info on some of the more "advanced techniques" would be great, such as: combining samples with live drums to create impact and emphasis, separating the initial attack and decay sounds of drums to eq/process separately, recording cymbals separately as Shawn Wait mentioned already, adding distortion to drums, effects of different compression levels/approaches.... man I could go on and on.

      Well said Ronnie! Warren is an absolute inspiration to the world of music and production. He takes time to communicate with his subscribers and has the best content. For somebody who has worked with such 'Premier League' producers and artistes, he is so humble and I have learned SO much from this channel in the past months. Great stuff.

    Love hark-back to GJ there ... the 3-4-mic GJ config is what I'd tend to do with my set-up, since I'm on a dedicated 16-track machine ... so track economy is still pretty vital. This X-X-X equilateral triangle thing is pretty awesome ... yes, phase relationships are preserved and the stereo image will be awesome ... I'd probably need to go with X = 40" because of space availability reasons. I can get my other condenser mic back from the shop in Helsinki next week! YAY!

    What an amazing space, love that live room, and that chamber. The wall hinged live/dead fronted panels is superb. Love that Coles setup through the gap in the panels. Both SM7b, and the SM57/451 pair really matched their kits and rooms perfectly. It's drastically different toms and rooms but I do think I loved the Josephson more than the 414s. There's clearer pitch, and skin noise and interesting grain (room maybe?). I wonder if those are the Josephsons that Steve Albini (RIP) favoured for his big live room at Electrical Audio? I preferred the D112/U87 combo for kick, sounded cleaner/smoother. The R44 had more of a Thwack!, which is nice and funky sounding. I wonder if I'd almost have swopped the bass drum setups, RCA+maybe RE-20 or Beta 52A for the old Ludwig, and D-112/U87 for the newer DW. I didn't love the sound of the metallic Ludwig snare in the deader room, maybe an SM7b or MD441 underneath might have given more body. Or maybe one of those snare weight dampeners, with those flappy side wings, to bring the pitch and ring down.

      Yep. No BS, just a truly professional setup with all the best of everything, and a transparent run-through of gear, placement, signal processing. If you duplicate this and can't get a good sound, the problem exists between the throne and capsules.

      David Rosario interesting! We didn’t process anywhere near as near as heavily as those kits sound. I like them as they are designed for people who want the sound be to more done for them. We also recorded in a different position and placement than those kits and also one of the kits belongs to the drummer not the studio.

  • @luukmeijssen2515

    Hi Warren, I love the video!
    Question about the "Fake" Glyn Johns overhead placement in the large room. I see Jacquire King also do it on his Drum Recordings (in vids that I have seen of him). So the mics are placed 50 inch from the snare and from each other. But do you pan them hard-left and right? I know that with a "normal" Glyn Johns technique you should pan them halfway,
    Would love if you enlighten me. Got some Drum recordings coming up myself in a few weeks, so I definitely want to try this myself.

    Great snare drum on the DW kit, but NOT a Bell Brass, that's a standard bronze (thin shell) snare drum from Tama, quite recent one actually.

    • @nateodrum
      @nateodrum 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are correct. I assume the bell brass was rented out already so they sent “the closest thing” I don’t think anyone told Warren.

  • @mattbacon285
    @mattbacon285 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Warren quick question - why is there such prevalence on using 10-12 mics in different spaces for drums these day? The kit sounds fantastic, and I'm sure a huge unspoken part of it is tuning the kit to match the song the band is recording so the drums REALLY gel. But what's the benefit of so many mics? Mixing one out if another sounds better? Options? Control? How present is each in the mix, considering those classic drum tracks you mentioned rarely used more than 3-4 mics.

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Marvellous question Matt! It's all for options! If I want to do Kick Snare and Overheads I can! Maybe just add the rooms! That will work great on a Zeppelin style song with one our two guitar parts, bass and vocals! However if the mix is extremely dense then I love being able to have individual control of each drum!

    I have a question: I have been trying to use my SM81's as overhead on pretty much 70-80 era cymbals..
    in a small 11x 15 room with a partial vaulted ceiling (trap). and the room is pretty much not too 'wet' as far as treatment.
    I still get way too much bleed from the rest of the kit , perhaps try something different? I have them set at normal, (flat I guess)l roll-off.... (I am not a 'Hard" hitter just normal style of playing), thanks in advance......

    Hi Warren, a question off topic and possibly a test you can do or have already done regarding studio monitors. I have a room that is quite dead, barely if not any reflections at all. I designed it that way thinking, I could add the right amount of ambience to my liking (wrong or right to me it made sense at the time). I found it a nice change to be honest, the sound automatically was tighter and concentrated or focussed. My issue is my monitors Alesis mk2 midrange has a very noticeable spike. I have been wanting and saving up to get a pair of Adams a7x but without being able to test them first was thinking of an alternate approach. If I were to buy a room measuring software kit and have my room calculated for its acoustics and graphed. Could I use a pair of 31 band parametric eq’s to flatten the measured curve between the monitors giving them a more flattened sound. Basically eq-ing the monitors to my room? Any info would be great, or a test if you could see it working.
    Cheers
    Pete
