How to charge cellphone in a Ford Model A with 6-volts

  • Seems like many of the people changing their Ford Model As to 12-volt electrical systems do it so they can charge cellphones or run their GPS navigation systems. Well, as it turns out, you don't need to change to 12 volts to do that! I will show you how a stock 6-volt, positive ground Model A electrical system will work just fine.

    Great video Paul! I really enjoy your videos, their informative with the detail needed to address the issue(s) on the topic. I may never use the 6 volt battery system, but it's nice to know it, just in case. My first cell phone was a Nokia, which I still have. I liked it because it had large numbers, which helped me see the numbers I wanted to dial, at over 40, back in the day. The one I liked the most was a MotorRola which was very versatile and held a charge like nobodies business. Sadly I had it in my pocket, the screen broke and I couldn't use it. Thanks for sharing, I hope you and your wife have a great day and a fantastic weekend!!!

    thanks Paul great video! one thing to remind your readers is that once the power cord in plugged into the to the socket the phone end of the cord outside metal is still Negative and the Model A frame is positive. So do not have the phone end of the cord touch any metal it may be positive and will short and blow the fuse and or melt the end of the plug. Talking from experience. I have also added Blue tooth and a navigation to my A. Works great. Mama is happy!

My ‘non-relative’ and fellow Model T owner, John Hunter, is an electrical wiz and can explain it beautifully as you did. John has fitted a valve radio to his ‘26 T tourer. Oh, I just fitted an iTimer to my T. Wow, does it pull well now in top gear. I’ll do a driving video with the car soon to show the difference.

    Of course and as to be expected, I was´nt smart enough to do that clever testing,
    if the TomTom would possibly even charge and work at just 6V input also.

    • @ModelA
      @ModelA  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! However, that electronic unit says it senses when the motor is running and turns itself "off" when you shut the motor off. How does it do that? Lots of electronic components that are running ALL the time so it can sense the motor running. It's also expensive and can break. My solution is inexpensive, super simple, and doesn't draw anything when nothing is plugged in to it.

    Paul, I love your videos. Your video quality is better than most other Model A videos out there. They are entertaining and I always learn something or get new ideas. I watched this video multiple times because I'm always confused with the whole positive ground thing. I noticed you moved the fuse to the negative cable and I do understand that in the positive ground system. But, am I wrong in my thinking that you are connecting the power outlet as a negative ground setup so it will work with your cellphone since it is connected directly to the battery and is not using any connections to the car chassis. So, why fuse the negative cable to the cellphone?

    • @ModelA
      @ModelA  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question! So, in this setup, the power outlet has no ground, it is "floating" as it is called. The charger, cable, whatever plugged in to the socket is also floating. However, as soon as the "ground" from the device is allowed to contact the vehicle body or anything else bonded to the vehicle ground, there could be a difference in the ground reference. If so, the fuse will blow instead of melting the wire coming from the charger to the device or worse.

    A second, and more relevant note, is that most chargers have a broad range of power they can deal with.
    Most small device chargers, can handle input ranges from 5v to 24v. Most larger portable devices, like laptops, have power bricks that can work anywhere from 90v to 240v.
    Also, since plugs are becoming more universal, the device getting charged automatically takes appropriate charge as long as their input is close enough.

    Some smart phones can last a long time on a single charge. Two I have had that last a week or more are Sonim and Cat.
    Yes, Cat as in Caterpillar the construction equipment company.
    I have had a Sonim and on my second Cat phone now, the S62. The batteries on these ultra durable, utility oriented phone brands have massive capacities. Additionally, they have lower spec hardware when compared to other modern smart phones. That means they draw far less power and last much longer than their popular counterparts. Mine can go a week on a single charge with regular usage. The Sonim I had would go 2 weeks between charges.
    For you, much like myself, having a regular camera and display that isn't 4k 3d capable is perfectly fine, as well as having a phone that is "good enough" rather than loaded with all the bits and bells.
    I love them because I don't have to be afraid of hurting it. It is as much of a tool as any actual tool I own. It's durable and sealed build ensures that falling into oil, or solvents, or handling them while greasy is not an issue. Setting them somewhere for lighting, them falling or as an emergency hammer. Rain, hot or cold, I don't have to worry about them at all.
    The Cat line of 60 series phones have a built in thermal camera that while I don't use it often, it has been extremely useful when needed to help diagnose and test issues. It is how I know which tire is running hot and is going to fail internally before the cap comes off. It is how I know that my hubs run better with certain oils over others. Finding out real time which cylinder is running hotter or colder, overheating wires from excess resistance, fluid levels in tanks, etc. Even around the house I use it to chase down areas of drafting and poor insulation.
    Pardon my long posts. I get on a roll with a topic and it just gets out, heh. Part of why I don't do TH-cam.
    Short version, there are good, long lasting and useful smartphones out there that even you might find beneficial, heh. Though I agree about not liking to replace things with newer versions as long as what I have still works perfectly fine. Though, like adding the oil filter and 2 speed gearbox, even what works can at times be improved upon.

    I love the video, installing the Car Cigarette Lighter Socket is a great idea. I wonder however, if there are differences in the chargers themselves. The one you used could handle the Model A 6 V voltage. But I understand that not every charger (made for 12 Volts) can handle low voltages.
    I would like to know what would be the best or better chargers to use.

    Theoretically, the 7805 voltage regulator (installed in most of these things) requires a minimum voltage of 7V to produce 5V DC required by the USB standard. I am kinda curious whether you can charge phones directly from the Model A electric system, 6V is not that much different from 5V (or maybe add a voltage divider if really necessary). You can probably just wire it to a USB-A or USB-C socket.

    • @ModelA
      @ModelA  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you look inside most of these cheap chargers, they don't even use a 7805, they just use zener diodes and resistors. But a LDO 7805 only needs 5.5 volts. A standard 7805 will start to regulate at just over 6 volts. When the motor is running, the Model A charging shstem is putting out close to 7 volts.

    Those switching 5V DC/DC phone charger/USB supplies make a lot of noise right in the FM band (I believe the switching frequency is 100 Mhz or something that creates a lot of harmonics on the FM band), so I built a linear regulator with a 7805. I suppose you could just use a rheostat in series and manually adjust the voltage.
    Of course this is pointless if you don't listen to FM!

    There is no need to change the side of the circuit that the fuse is on. The fuse on the red wire (which is the positive on the phone circuit) is still where you will want the fuse. It won't hurt anything moving it to the other wire, but for conventional fuse protection leave it alone and on the red wire that is hooked to positive terminal of the battery.

    Let us know how this works long term, please. Car/wall chargers do more than just convert 120v AC to 5v DC. They limit charging when the battery is full and condition the voltage. Not sure over time how a cell phone battery will last with constantly varying voltage (and often higher than 5v on a Model A generator) and never going into maintenance mode when fully charged. Creative idea, but not sure I would trust it on a $900 cell phone! Wish you luck!

    • @ModelA
      @ModelA  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Tim. FYI, the charging regulation circuitry is in the smartyphone device, not in the charger. All the charger does is put out a regulated voltage. No cutoff or anything. Many new smartyphones even use lines of computer code to tell their internal charging circuits how to behave.

    I understand it was sensible to add a waterproof fuse, but from an electrical point of view it didn't matter whether it was in the positive or negative cable.
    Phones can be charged from a standard USB port, which only supplies 5 volts, so it's pretty unsurprising that a 6 volt supply works. The only limitation would be the type of voltage regulation in the charger.

    • @ModelA
      @ModelA  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Chris. Actually, it DOES matter, from a protection of the car point of view. If you have the fuse in the wire that is grounded and the hot wire touches ground, you have a fire. If the fuse is in the hot wire, you just blow the fuse. The purpose of fusing the hot wire is in case the phone charger plug has a ground and it touches the shifter or something in the car that is at ground potential. Make sense?

    • @chrispop99
      @chrispop99 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ModelA If the hot wire from the battery to the fuse shorts, the fuse won't blow. If there is a short within the socket, it won't matter where the fuse it; it will still blow. The only extra protection gained by moving the fuse is the few inches of cable from the fuse to the socket. Slightly better, but not in my opinion really worthwhile.
      If anything after the charger shorts, good quality chargers have a much lower value fuse within the charger will blow before the one in the supply to the socket. If it's a cheap charger, the electronics in the charger will blow open circuit before the supply fuse blows.
      Of course, electricity doesn't care what colour the wire is, so you could have swapped wires over!
      Glad you did it the best way, as you do all your work. I would love to have the facilities you have to work with!

    Hey Paul - love the videos but your tag line always confuses me. I know you take pride in “where ok boomer is a compliment” but I think you don’t fully understand the context that it is normally used. So I thought I’d comment on this video as you demonstrate it perfectly. When saying things like “smarty phone” and being proud of not liking smart phones that’s the perfect situation when someone would respond with “ok boomer.” It’s the sense of dismissal to new technology from the boomer generation that causes young people to use the phrase. To put it into context that matches this video perfectly: old farmers at the turn of the 20th century who were not fond of these new “automobiles” used to yell “get a horse!” to people purchasing new fords. In today’s society we would say “ok (fill in their generation)” because it speaks to their lack of interest in keeping up with the times. Anyway hope that helps I enjoy the videos and keep them coming!
