I grew up with Barney. I live about 20 minutes away from the studio that Barney was filmed at. Not even I can defend Barney. Barney is one of those things that makes Texas look bad, along with Marzgurl, Randy Pitchford, Funimation, Rooster Teeth, and numerous corrupt politicians.
I don't know what it says about me, but Joe Montana Football is one of my favorite games ever. I've never played Madden though, so that must have been way better.
When you mentioned Disney, I thought you were going to mention Fantasia. Then you did in the video's closing. That was one I spent the full price on as a kid, and was disappointed. I did manage to beat it, however, despite the frustration. Definitely a missed opportunity, particularly for how good Castle of Illusion and Quackshot are.
+GameBoy Guru Fantasia is a glaring example of a bad Disney Sega Genesis game in a long line of normally well-made ones. It was rushed out to tie in with the film’s VHS release, and as a result, it suffers from sloppy programming, awkward controls, haphazard level design, tinny music that hardly does the film’s soundtrack any justice, and Chernabog isn’t even the final boss. One of the game’s developers even admitted in an interview that the game needed at least two more months of development to iron out its flaws.
Oof, this one is painful to watch in the best way possible. I really appreciate all your knowledge and insight. I didn't really grow up playing a lot of these games. That Joe Montana situation was a real mess. Great video!
Where's virtual hydlide for the Saturn? The game with the worst of everything, that's soooo bad you still have to experience it, to truly know how awful it is? Who's main character's walking animation, made him look like someone who just had, or was teetering on the verge of shitting themselves as they glided across the bland and almost identical looking blocky landscapes. Only to be killed, after an hour of never coming across a single soul, to be killed by a random bat after accidentally walking into a cave!! Unbelievable and remarkable in it's absolute awfulness!!!
The DC was very much rushed in 🇯🇵 like to make the end of the year launch date...there. the western release was, very much the opposite and they had an awesome launch lineup...but I do recall the controversy over both godzilla and pen pen being, underwhelming 😆 but still...the hype was real! Seeing vf3 running on it, it did remind me exactly of seeing the super famicom on import for the first time and instantly needing to own it for the aesthetics of the machine alone but also the truly existing prospect of a huge generational leap. When soul calibur was running the next time I was in the store there was a small crowd. Jaws dropped. Good memories...
Love the video and you sharing your own expectations and memories behind the games! You're such a solid content creator, I can't believe I hadn't found you sooner, my man. Also, as a fellow dad, would you consider making a video on possible good Sega retro games for children?
I rented Galaxy Force II and always had a soft spot for how hard they nailed the arcade soundtrack, but yeah, in retrospect the Atari-ized horizons, especially the walls inside the asteroids, are pretty ridiculous.
I had Enduro Racer as a rental for one weekend back then, it was the perfect game for that...but getting it as a Birthday or Christmas Present in your Childhood and beeing stuck with it for the next months, ouch.
@@lazarushernandez5827 I think the Master System version is far better than the arcade. The arcade game plays like crap, and trying to do a direct port to the SMS would have made an already garbage game even worse.
Great video SLX. I think the most regrettable f ups are the ones when Sega had a huge hit game on their hands, and put out a lousy conversion. Saturn House of the Dead being one of the biggest examples.
You're totally right. The PlayStation 2 & 3 were tough to program for, & they fared just fine. The Virtual Boy caused migraines and was discontinued after 1 year. 2 years after that the Gameboy Color hit. The Gameboy Advance was only 2 years later, with a screen nobody could see. And it was followed by the DS only 3 years after that. Other companies have proven the hardware moves Sega made weren't fatal...but only as long as you have the software - or a killer feature - to bring the people in.
You mentioned it in the Dreamcast section (but not in the list, thankfully!)...Pen Pen Triicelon! (sp) That was one of my favourites on the DC, along with Ooga Booga. Those games were unique in that they didn't play like many other games at the time. Ooga Booga was like a battle royale, and PPT was like a triathelon with a hint of Kart Racer and a big heap of charm dumped on it.
I always hear the story behind the first Joe Montana. But I had the first Madden and my cousin had the first Montana. I thought both had their ups and downs and I loved both. It never seemed like a downgraded version of the first Madden to me. There are parts, like the speed, that I think are superior to the first Madden. I think Madden ‘91-‘94 might play a part in people’s subconscious to create this idea that the first Madden was head and shoulders above the first Montana. They both were great first 16 bit football games that each had better parts than the other.
I have always found it strange that the MD could handle Vectorman, Sonic 3, Sub Terrania, and Comix Zone but not super scalers. It just shouldn't be true.
The Mega Drive simply cannot scale or rotate sprites; the hardware does not support it. There are tricks for "scaling" either the entire foreground layer or the entire background layer, or they can just store all rotations/sizes as frames of sprite animation, but these hacks take up precious CPU cycles, and even then, they can't be as smooth as the hardware scaling you'd find on arcade games or the 32X. In terms of modern PC graphics, it's like how the 5700XT can handle RDR2 just fine, but there's no way it could run ray-traced quake 2.
They definitely should have had more ports of super scaler games on the 32X. Space Harrier and After Burner were good. Should have done Galaxy Force 2, Outrun, etc.
Hey Sonic Spinball is a good game I don't know why everyone dislikes it so much its very underrated game and it was based off the American Sonic cartoons in the 90's and I'm glad to have it on Sonic mega collection plus.
I'm gonna add to this list, Phantasy Star 3. Gonna get a lot of hate, but I think it falls way short of what the series had built upon, up to that time. Great video bro. Keep them coming.
As a SEGA fan since the SMS... I am relatively certain SEGA is ashamed of all of their games except the Sonic games. It would explain why sequels are so uncommon from them and even remakes end up licensed out to fans-turned-pro (see Sonic Mania, the Wonderboy games, and the upcoming Alex Kidd).
Your point about QA makes a lot of sense, SLX. Nintendo tends to be a lot stricter about it and they are still around as a hardware maker. I'll always be a Sega fan though, I think the good games on the whole, and the great memories, far outstrip the duds they put out, but this may just be the rosy tinted glasses you spoke about. Also, for some reason, I liked Sonic Spinball; guess I'm weird.
Great video as always! I wonder why Sega didn't just take the Ecco the Dolphin engine and gameplay and use that as a blueprint for Ariel. Unless Ecco came out after.
I must admit, I am not a Sega fan. Had a genesis as one my first console experiences and played the classics to death. Never had a Nintendo Entertainment System, SNES or 64 but of course a Gameboy. What I love about your videos is your enthusiasm for the company. Sega really ought to be paying you for your content and praise and even when you have something negative to say about Sega, it's always done in such a positive way. You make great content and I hope you continue to make videos. Personally, I enjoy listening about your experience with the game way back when and your reflections on them now. You have nailed a really good review style for this channel.
Watching this video really hit hard about how much damage Bernie Stolar did to the Saturn when he was the president of Sega. He hated 2D games and RPG’s and as a result, so many incredible games got passed over. Also, that Virtua Fighter 3tb port was so disappointing. Even as a kid, I knew it felt off and wasn’t a true arcade perfect port as the mechanics and frame rate were not good. Turns out that it was developed by a third party instead of the in house VF team.
Had no idea that the U.S. release of Enduro Racer was missing half the content the Japanese version had. It was one of my favorites on the Master System too.
Absolutely loved enduro racer on master system. My first console and that was the first game I ever completed, around the same time as Ghostbusters. Great times.
Now, the Sega Genesis is my favorite console of all time, but Barney’s Hide and Seek Game is the one Genesis game I never touch. And why should I have to? The game practically plays itself if you put the controller down.

So does Nintendo for NES
Nah
It wasn’t a official game
It is unlicensed, something you need for a game to be official
Because of the thumbnail I was afraid you were gonna say Tails' Adventure. Loved that game as a kid. But yeah, totally agree about Sky Patrol. Never got very far in it.
I was listening to this while going to one of my local gameshops and, I kid you not, they had Godzilla Generations 😂 I know it must be terrible but I had to have it
I love Enduro Racer! I still play it to this day.
Whenever SLX uploads I drop everything I'm doing.
Same here, I keep on bluetooth headphones while I'm at work so I don't miss anything 🤣
I remember magazines with replies to letters, telling readers that the DC Godzilla was better left in Japan. Now I see why.
I don't know what it says about me, but Joe Montana Football is one of my favorite games ever. I've never played Madden though, so that must have been way better.
That master system motorcycle game with the cut content was still great tho. I played it quite a bit
Says Godzilla feels like you're walking around in a rubber suit smashing up cardboard buildings. Sounds like an accurate Godzilla experience to me.
They talk about it in part 1
Oof, this one is painful to watch in the best way possible. I really appreciate all your knowledge and insight. I didn't really grow up playing a lot of these games. That Joe Montana situation was a real mess. Great video!
The map of that godzilla game looks like swimming trunks.
I had to go back to part 1!.. great video Mr. Lord X. Hope all is well.
It's on part 3 coming soon...
10:53 Godzilla Generations wished it was like that.
Man, Pen Pen is really slept on in the Sega community. You should try it out with a group of friends sometime, its a blast.
I’ll never forgive them of robbing my childhood of half of Enduro Racer.
Casually sat here before work drinking coffee, eating cereal watching this ....sold
Speak of the devil for the first time 8 years actually displaying my 5 Sega Genesis collection plus games on display 👌 Nice....
Your grammar chip is malfunctioning.
@@Gorilla_Jones I'm just drunk
I had Enduro Racer as a rental for one weekend back then, it was the perfect game for that...but getting it as a Birthday or Christmas Present in your Childhood and beeing stuck with it for the next months, ouch.
Damn... The Enduro game info got me completely pissed... I played that game a lot back in the day, and even then thought it was short....
Definitely a case of ignorance is bliss. I never understood why this game never got a proper arcade port.
(sp)
That was one of my favourites on the DC, along with Ooga Booga. Those games were unique in that they didn't play like many other games at the time. Ooga Booga was like a battle royale, and PPT was like a triathelon with a hint of Kart Racer and a big heap of charm dumped on it.
I would like to try Cosmic Carnage.
It would be great if someone touched it up and made a patch.
It has that 32X oddity to it.
Of course; it's only a (barely) passible prototype at best, and certainly NEEDS to be finished...
That Godzilla game looks amazing, just like the movie xD
Aw, be nice to Sonic Spinball. That game helped some people realize they were into licking jumper cables.
God, that Barney game looks like something a creepypasta might be written about.
I loved U.S. Gold games when growing up. OutRun Europa was my favorite when I was a kid.
Barney Hide and Seek Game is the best video game ever.
Yeah, where did Sega get the ridiculous idea that Godzilla's just a guy in a suit knocking over cardboard buildings?! /s
Had no idea that the U.S. release of Enduro Racer was missing half the content the Japanese version had. It was one of my favorites on the Master System too.
It's a shame, Cosmic Carnage looks awesome. Sega, please, give it a frame rate patch and release it on Switch or anything!
Absolutely loved enduro racer on master system. My first console and that was the first game I ever completed, around the same time as Ghostbusters. Great times.
I object. I bought Aeriel's adventure for my nieces birthday and she loved it
It was really painful being a Sega fan after so many bad decisions they've taken.
Another amazing vid SLX, you just never miss! Ps: also-came here to say "See ya Next year" - A Seahawks fan.
Now, the Sega Genesis is my favorite console of all time, but Barney’s Hide and Seek Game is the one Genesis game I never touch. And why should I have to? The game practically plays itself if you put the controller down.
13:30 no! I love Sonic Spinball!
So many great memories playing with my mum, this was like the only game she played with us on Genesis!
The Enduro Racer Main Them music track in the video is burned into my brain thanks to Fist of The North Star Lost Paradise. A song of choice while driving the Buggy.
In an alternate timeline, sega is still making consoles to compete with the juggernauts
I've really got back Into Sega recently. Been solely nintendo for years until I re-discovered my love for the Mega Drive
