In this Airalo eSIM activation guide and review, we've detailed step-by-step how to buy & activate your eSIM on an iPhone. This tutorial covers exactly how to use the Airalo app, including purchasing, how to contact customer support & installation. At the end, I've also included a Google Maps trick to help you save data while you travel.
*IMPORTANT: Check the Validity Period before you install your eSIM as SOME activate as soon as they're installed. I didn't mention this in the video, and it's very important to check.

Thank you for your excellent "how-to set up Airalo". Professional video editing and a sweet human touch in the background-true life!
Glad you enjoyed the video and edit! Thanks so much for watching. ^Jonny

An excellent instructional video, just what I need. I will be using Airalo for the first time on a forthcoming trip to Europe in about 6 weeks and will definitely be referring to the video again. So glad I researched it now, I will definitely be watching this video again a few times as I get closer to my trip. GREAT job & THANKS!
Thank you so much! That's a really kind comment and it made my day. All the best and let me know if you need anything. ^Jonny
Really enjoyed this review. Very informative and helpful and loved the humour. Most tutorials are cold and clinical and I think some people tend to ‘switch off’ concentration.
This really helped me decide which eSIM / provider for Australia. Cheers 🍻
Thank you so much and have a great trip to Australia! I'm mildly jealous 😅 ^Jonny
You did the best job at explaining and using this app. 👏 thank you.
You’re welcome 😊
perfectly explained 👍🏻 Thank you
No worries, glad it was helpful. ^Jonny
Wow, very helpful for a beginner like myself. I watched two other videos about airolo before my Asia trip, but yours is easy to follow. I already set up airolo account and just nervous to click buy. thank you, you're awsome!
That's awesome Molly, glad to have helped. It's really not as scary as you think, but I was a bit nervous myself if I'm being honest! ^Jonny
Awesome! Very helpful!
No worries! Feel free to let me know if you have any questions. ^Jonny

Hey, mate, how did it work out?
@@domn8dontw8 perfect. Also used it for Guyana's last month.
Excellent tutorial!!❤
Thanks James!
Excellent video, very clear explanation of how it works and the process. I’ve steered clear of esims before now but feel confident in using now. One of my trips later this year is in China, think that might be more of a challenge !!
Honestly, that's so awesome to read because it's precisely what I wanted from this video, I wanted people to feel more comfortable with eSIMs. All the best with your trip to China. ^Jonny
It’s really helpful, you’re amazing ❤Thanks 🙏

Thank you for all of the instructions. It is very helpful. So, now it is set to go, and when I land, it should automatically connect and work, yes? Thank you!
The edits 😮💨😮💨 great video will download airalo now!
Thank you Elise :) Don't forget to use our code MONITO15 💚 ^Jonny
Hi, it’s the best tutorial I’ve seen here on TH-cam. I have question, if I already arrived in the destination can I still buy the esim? Thanks in advance
Great question! Yes you can, you would be activating and installing immediately, so the only potential issue is that you need a reliable internet connection, but hopefully you can find one at a coffee shop, hotel etc. Glad you found the video useful. ^Jonny
Thank you so much
You're very welcome! ^Jonny
Nice explainer vid,
Would you be able to receive sms calls on the esim designated number before arrival to destination country? For OTP services that require a "local" number?
Thank you! That's a great question. I believe you would still need to be at your destination country, as for a Discover+ eSIM to receive texts it would need to be activated and connected to one of its available networks. ^Jonny
I've tried installing other esims and thinking I did it correctly, went on my travels to return home to find a huge bill from my network provider😢 Your video was FANTASTIC!!! Being able to stop, start and rewind the video as though I was being given a personal installation session from you was brilliant. You covered everything I would see and I am now more confident in the esim installation this time. Fingers crossed it all works out once I'm away and more importantly no extra charges from my current provider when I return home. Wish me luck. Many, many thanks.
Hey Rose! Lots of luck for your trip. As long as you have data roaming toggled off on your primary SIM and Allow Mobile Data Switching toggled off on your eSIM then your carrier shouldn't charge you any roaming fees. If they still do, then let me know as I will personally visit their houses and throws eggs at them, because that's entirely unfair. All the best! ^Jonny
@@Monitodotcom Hey Jonny. Quick update. Back from my trip and it worked💃. It took a few minutes to find a network once I initially landed in my destination country (which had me fretting about whether I was clocking up a bill with my home network), but after this first time, switching between the esim and Wi-Fi was not a problem. Thanks again.
That's so cool, thank you for sharing Rose and I'm so glad your trip was a success! @@rosejames1216
@@Monitodotcomhow do u toggle these off??
Be careful, I thought I had did it correctly with airlo but still to find large bill when I got home.
Thanks for the video it was really well done! I would just like to ask do I need to turn off my primary SIM card once I arrive to avoid the charges I might get with my original phone carrier. Thanks
No you don't need to turn it off entirely, you could just toggle Data Roaming to off on your primary SIM. I demonstrated this here: th-cam.com/video/O2hGwPV4K_s/w-d-xo.htmlsi=aZllwFQpTIGaTZ-U&t=573 - That will prevent any roaming charges. Just make sure that you do that on your primary SIM. Let me know if you have any more questions. ^J
Hey there! Thanks for your really helpful video! I would really appreciate your advice for my situation! I am from Australia and looking to purchase an E-Sim for an upcoming trip in a few months. I will be travelling to the UK, the Netherlands and Germany. I am just a little confused when it comes to the lines chosen to make sure that I don't get any nasty unexpected charges. The other thing is that my home network provider doesn't actually have international roaming available, therefore I am not sure how I would even get charged.
Would you suggest that when travelling, I pick the travel e-sim line for calls/texts as well as mobile data and then the primary line for iMessage and Facetime? As this uses the mobile data from the e-sim anyway?
I just get a little lost on knowing how my apps work and how i can be contacted when overseas picking different lines. I guess if the e-sim is chosen for calls and texts (no one from home will be calling or sending normal text messages therefore no charges) however i will still be able to use imessage, facetime, fb messenger and whatsapp with my home mobile number because they will just use the mobile data from the travel e-sim? Hopefully this all makes sense! Looking forward to hearing from you. :)
Hey Alice! I'll try to help answer your questions the best I can and I've broken them down into sections.
Firstly, switch data roaming off on your personal sim card, just to make sure you avoid any unexpected data roaming charges. I referenced this here: th-cam.com/video/O2hGwPV4K_s/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Vraaylt2DdA3Y72n
"Would you suggest that when travelling, I pick the travel e-sim line for calls/texts as well as mobile data and then the primary line for iMessage and Facetime? As this uses the mobile data from the e-sim anyway?"
- Are you looking to get a Discover+ eSIM so you not only have data but you can also use it to make calls and texts?
"however i will still be able to use imessage, facetime, fb messenger and whatsapp with my home mobile number because they will just use the mobile data from the travel e-sim?"
- Yes, exactly, but for this to occur you'll need to select your Primary sim for iMessage & FaceTime. Airalo also reference this in their activation guide (th-cam.com/video/LOCh56YYvUY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=-a3NpDQZ6mOzHjbE). BY selecting your home number, you'll receive messages and FaceTime calls while using the cellular data with your eSIM.
I'll wait to hear from you, thanks. ^Jonny
Question : Can you also use this to connect multiple devices via hotspot when travelling outside home country? I’m torn between try using this or the portable pocket WiFi.
Yes you can, I mentioned this briefly in another Airalo video (th-cam.com/video/EDD-zI6KGO4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=k1ft1wXCkkd29hlT&t=408), I've time stamped the video link. ^Jonny
Thanks for the vid, can I switch the on line off until I reach the destination on my new e sim?
Yes you can! But just make sure when you arrive that data roaming is turned off on your primary eSIM, and double check Mobile Data within phone's settings is set to your Airalo eSIM. ^Jonny
great video. unfortunately I had dreadful problems installing the airlo eSim.
I spent 3 hours on chat support, first they mistook another of my sims for theirs, then none of 3 install methods worked.
eventually worked out it was because I was on work wifi, switched wifi off and used 4G network and it installed straight away.
also asked me which of my current plans (I have 2 existing sims) I wanted to switch off....?
- would be useful to add details around those for others trouble shooting, in your great vid.
Great video, Do you know if I can order 2 esim at the same time for my wife and me or we need to order separetely? Thanks!!
Yes you can, your wife could simply scan the QR code from your app or order confirmation to install the eSIM. ^Jonny
Essentially retry activation. Should it be activated before arrival?
Thank you. This was so helpful. Just to absolutely clarify - I don't have international roaming on my phone plan. I don't need it at all - right? The Airalo esim covers it all?
Hey! Yes, that's correct, with the Airalo eSIM activated you would be able to use that as your roaming data, so there wouldn't be a need to have international roaming on your main phone plan. Let me know if you have any more questions. ^Jonny
This is so helpful! Question! In keeping your default line primary, that ensures we can call out in case of emergency right? I’m boarding my pets & want to be able to call the vet for updates. (So much to think about when traveling abroad 😂)
Yes exactly 🙂 Keep your primary SIM as the default line, that way you can still receive and make calls and you'll be able to contact the vets. Safe travels and I hope it isn't too stressful! ^Jonny
@@Monitodotcomawesome! Thanks!
thank you brilliant instructions. On my settings, my sim says 'activating' , does this take some time?
Yes, that can happen. Give it a few hours and then check again. ^Jonny
Really useful, thank you. To be clear, we’re going Barbados and I don’t want stupid charges. What do I toggle to ensure I don’t make non data calls or receive them?
Just toggle your Primary SIM off. Do this by switching Turn On This Line to OFF. That way your normal primary SIM will be totally shut off for your trip.
So once I get to my destination, both my primary and the Airalo sims will be toggled on? Or do I toggle my primary sim off?
That depends whether you want your main SIM to be active or not. If you still want to receive phone calls then don't toggle it off, and if you just want to avoid using any data then just toggle Data Roaming. I mentioned that here: th-cam.com/video/O2hGwPV4K_s/w-d-xo.htmlsi=zCGwCsUduxETRODo&t=569
Should you toggle roaming from the new plan on when you are still in your home country, or is upon ariving fine?
It doesn't really matter.
Personally I would do this upon arrival, if I was flying this would be just as I land at the airport. However, you could toggle it on before, as it won't actually start using the data until you connect to a supported network. This would likely take place as soon as you land or cross into the border of whichever country or region you're travelling to. ^Jonny
Will the new eSIM still work if I don't toggle the roaming on ? Does it make it work better to have it on? Thanks!@@Monitodotcom
This is a great video, but I have a question... at 7:10 you indicate that for iMessage you should select "Primary" to use your regular plan for messages and facetime. If you do that will you not incur data charges while traveling? I would think you would want to select 'personal' for the eSim plan here. If you select Primary because you aren't traveling YET how do you get back to this option to select the eSim plan for your trip?
Hey! Yeah that's actually what Airalo recommends, you select iMessage as Primary so you can still receive iMessages and FaceTime calls, but it won't use your data because your Mobile Data will be set to your eSIM. ^Jonny
Once you arrive at your destination should you change the mobile data option to the esim thank you
Yes, and I would advise toggling Data Roaming off on your regular SIM. ^Jonny
Downloading offline goodgle map is game changer
You're telling me, especially great if you aren't travelling far, such as staying in a city. It was great for a recent trip I had to Prague. ^Jonny
Hello! Would like to ask if you can buy airalo esim from the Philippines? Or should I buy loca esims here and can use in airalo app? TIA.
I've just tried a VPN in the Philippines and I could access the website and make a purchase so I don't see why not. But a local eSIM might be better, they usually are. Definitely just do some price checking. ^Jonny
Regarding the activation when you arrive at your destination: do you have switch from primary to e-sim for ‘Mobile Data’ (the first option in the very top) and for ‘default voice line’?
Yeah switch Mobile or Cellular Data to your Airalo eSIM and turn of Allow Mobile Data Switching to off. Default voice line could remain as your primary SIM IF you want to still receive and make calls, but if not just switch it to your new eSIM. Of course if you don't have one with text and calls then you won't be able to use it for that. ^Jonny
Hi, where in the settings can I change the mobile data from primary to personal/secondary (new eSIM)
Hey! If you go to Mobile/Cellular Service then select the top option Mobile/Cellular Data. There you can change it. Let me know if you have any more questions. ^Jonny
@@Monitodotcom ohh alright, I accidentally exited during the installation process and was unable to choose one of the two for cellular data. Is it fine that I “skipped” it as long as I opt for personal/secondary on cellular data in settings once I arrive at my destination? thank you!
Hi, do I need to switch off my primary line when I land at my destination or does this remain on, along with my Airalo eSIM line?
That's up to you, you want to make sure data roaming is toggled off on your primary line, but if you want extra peace of mine and you don't need to receive calls or texts to your primary line then Toggle Turn This Line to off. This isn't essential for the Airalo eSIM to work, but it does provide greater peace of mind and assurance that your primary SIM won't roam. ^Jonny
Question -
So, I can purchase an eSIM now whilst at home and can save it for a later time to use/activate? Does it expiry between purchase and being activated?
Also, when I want to activate the eSIM… do I need connection to activate it if I have already purchased it?
Thank you
Hey! There are some eSIMs that activate immediately after purchase, but most don’t. Most won’t activate until you connect to a network at your travel destination. Check the Activation Policy for more information, as this will tell you.
Hope that helps. ^Jonny
Hi just purchase Airalo for Japan. We will be on a cruise ship part of the time. Can I turn esim and use wifi?
Yeah for sure, just keep your WIfI on and when your phone connects to it it will cease using your eSIM. If the WiFi signal is weak it may be better to toggle Turn This Line off on your eSIM just in case you don't want o use it while you're on the cruise ship. Just wait till you arrive and get a feel for how good the WiFi is. ^Jonny
will this conflict with my current cellphone provider i currently have. or can i switch between both, kinda confused on that part
You can have an eSIM alongside your regular SIM, as long as your phone is unlocked. Who is your carrier ^Jonny
Bravo 👏👏👏👏
Thanks!
To avoid any roaming charges what should I do with the set up? Primary or personal? Still a bit confused with default line? If I press personal what will happen and can I do primary for the rest like mobile data and imsg+facetime
When it comes to the Default Line, if you want to continue receiving calls and texts then keep this as primary, for mobile data you want to select your Airalo eSIM and for FaceTime & iMessages you want to keep this as primary. That way you will still receive FaceTime/iMessages but your phone will use your Airalo eSIM for data. ^Jonny
So if the eSIM was properly installed but “activation failed” while in home country ( probably WiFi disruption) is that okay? Will activation work in foreign country? Or is there a way to do it in advance? Great video btw thanks
Did you try activating the eSIM again? I would definitely recommend trying to get it activated prior to your trip, just so it’s ready to go when you arrive. ^Jonny
I understand that i can download two e-sims in one phone ( purpose is to get more data)
But can i use both of them alternatively as there is throttling after data limit ( in case my data limit is reached)
Is it possible to use 2 e-sims this way.
does this can I shared my data like hotspot to my husband is phone?
Yes, you can use your personal hotspot with your eSIM as long as it is supported by your device and the network. ^Jonny
I wondering if I unlock network provider lock at my local internet provider office (offline), will I be charged to unlock it rather than if I do it online provider that I think it so pricy?
I'm not sure I understand your question. Sorry.
Thanks a lot, Buddy, very good Video, I will be using this company and will buy the eSim, but please advise if Data can be shared with Airalo for say a 10GB purchase over 30 days, i.e. Hot Spotting
You’re welcome, glad you found it useful. Yeah you can hotspot with Airalo and with any of their eSIMs. ^Jonny
If im staying to Japan for 3 weeks and bought the 30 days package local eSIM …is it possible to install and activate the eSIM before leaving USA? Or it can only be activated once arrived in Japan since its local eSIM?
Hi, you can definitely install the eSIM on your device while in USA. However, you can’t activate it unless arriving to your destination in order for the eSIM to connect to a local network provider.
(This works on all the Airalo eSIMs except for the Global eSIMs)
We are traveling in thailand this week if i use e sim can I turn off the data when we are in wifi area and turn it on if we leave within the wifi area??
That's if you don't want to use your eSIM data. But you don't need to turn it off manually, once your phone connects to a WiFi network it will disable data usage. But if you're p[erhaps worried about the reliability of the network, then do switch your Data Roaming to Off on the eSIM. You can always turn it back on once you disable or leave the WiFi network. ^Jonny
I want to purchase a Global e-sim, but don't want it to start until I leave my home country (which IS one of the countries covered by the E-Sim). What do I need to do in settings to leave it turned off (un-activated?) until I'm in a foreign country, or at least on the plane?
This is what i call rocket science
Do you think it's too difficult? ^Jonny
puedo quitar la sim al llegar al destino del telefono para evitar errores de cargos de mi servicio telefonico y que comience a funcionar la Esim?
Sí tu puedes ^Jonny
so on my upcoming trip i will be first going to Germany than Morocco than flying to Switzerland so would I be able to switch back to my Euro plan or is it just easier to get a separate sim for each country? BTW clearest instructions on TH-cam
How much data do you think you'll need? ^Jonny
Not sure. I’m a pretty heavy user
In that case, I think a Europe regional eSIM could be the best choice to cover you for Switzerland Germany, possibly 10GB and then get a Morrocco eSIM, with 5GB. That'll cost around 69 bucks for both but you could also use our 15% code and get it for around 58 bucks.
That's 15GB of data across 3 countries, which isn't bad. Did you have a budget in mind?
That sounds perfect! No budget in mind I think your suggestion is a good idea plus I can always top up
Thank you!
A quick question - if the data wont kick in until the arrival at the destination, is it ok to activated while still in the home country?
Yeah for sure! The validity and data won't begin until the eSIM connects to a network at your travel destination. So while you're at home, you're all good. ^Jonny
@@Monitodotcom awesome! Thanks so much!
During the installation process, after selecting ‘Primary’ for iMessage & FaceTime - Will I still be able to make FaceTime calls and send iMessages with my eSim plan?
Yes you will. ^Jonny
Hello. I live in US. If I visit Philippines, I wouldnt be able to register sim cards bec I dont have Philippine ID. If I download Airalo before leaving US, will I have data in Philippines without the need to register? Can I continue to buy additional data while I'm in Philippines? Thanks
I'm confused about if I need to come back to the app and change the mobile data option from Primary to Personal when I am ready to go? Or if what you showed in settings afterwards does this part?
If you don't select the eSIM as your mobile data provider during installation, then yes you'll have to go back. Best thing to do is go back to your settings and check your Primary SIM and eSIM.
As a rule of thumb, I recommend, before you land or arrive at your destination, check your Mobile/Cellular Data provider in settings is set to the eSIM, then switch Roaming to OFF on your primary SIM, and turn the eSIM to ON. Hope that helps, let me know if you have any further questions. ^Jonny
Great, thanks for replying. So to be clear, I can do everything my phone settings afterwards and I don’t need to do anything in the app?
No problem. Yeah, there's nothing to do in the app once the eSIM is installed. ^J
Can I remove my physical SIM card and just use the esim to be 100% sure I wont be charged by my carrier when I get back home?
Yes absolutely, obviously you’ll be unable to make or receive texts and calls but that’s certainly one way to guarantee you won’t be charged.
I completed setting up esim. Questions once arrive at my destination. On setting click on cellular, mine said primary with my phone # and secondary, is secondary my airolo esim? Both are turning on. Do i click secondary to rename it by pressing custom lable? scroll down see Limit IP address on and data roaming off. Once i arrive roaming on right? sorry for these stupid questions. thank you so much!
Hey Molly! Yes the secondary one will be your Airalo eSIM. You can switch that off for now by toggling Turn This Line to Off, and yes rename that to something else by pressing custom label.
When you arrive at your destination, toggle Turn This Line On (if you switched it off) AND Data Roaming to On. Also, toggle Data Roaming to OFF on your primary SIM. Let me know if you have more questions. Here to help. ^Jonny
Once I arrive at my destination do I need to turn off my primary carrier?
It isn't entirely necessary, but you can if you want greater peace of mind. Do you know how to do it? ^Jonny
what if the Carrier Lock is "No Sim restrictions" but the Physical Sim under network is Verizon? will an esim still work?
Yes absolutely, if your phone says No Sim Restrictions then it is unlocked. ^Jonny
Is it possible to turn off the airalo esim to save data and then turn it back on when needed ?
Yes absolutely, just toggle Data Roaming to off. ^Jonny
Great video. I would like to suggest that if you do any other Airalo videos, that you discuss data sharing via a personal hotspot.
Hey! Thanks for your feedback, funnily enough I mentioned it in my latest Airalo video 😌 I’m not sure now if I went into enough detail, I was quite brief. Let me know what you think. ^Jonny
@@MonitodotcomI watched the other video. More detail would be helpful. Btw I just bought my first eSIM from Airalo. Thanks for the discount.
I agree, it was too brief! You're welcome, thanks for using the code and let me know if you ever need anything. ^Jonny
Is the price in US dollars per day, $7 per day or 2 weeks, or the whole length of use
?
The price is for the duration of the eSIM, check how many days the eSIM comes with. Once activated, the price you pay covers you until the eSIM expires. ^Jonny
Hello, can I install my e-SIM, activate it and then physically remove my main SIM from my phone? The e-SIM will still work? Or in order to work it needs my original SIM inserted in my phone?
You would still be able to use your phone, but certain things won't work. You won't receive phone calls or be able to make them or receive/make SMS messages with your home cellular number, although you could get an eSIM with calls and texts and use that instead. I don't think it's necessary to take out the SIM, you could just turn it off, or toggle data roaming off. ^Jonny
@@Monitodotcom Thank you! It's just because I am almost certain that I won't do the whole thing 100% correctly lol and it's ok not using my phone for anything else other then the data, cause it's only a 5-day trip vacation to the US :) (I'm from Canada)
I totally understand, in that case just remove the SIM so you can travel with absolute peace of mind and feel relaxed about it. Let me know how it goes :) Safe travels. ^Jonny
I opted for a physical SIM from Optus $35 deal for 90 gb for 28 days. I bought it at Brisbane airport. The process was very quick and seamless. Unfortunately, upon ‘recharging’ for the next 28-days the cheaper option of $12 for less data is only a 7-day deal. So you end up paying $35 again to get the 28-day allowance.
$35 for 90gb is pretty damn good though! Surprised you needed to recharge/top-up. Were you using it with a hotspot? ^Jonny
Can I buy eSIMs in the app for my kids so they can activate them on their phones?
Yeah you can, they could activate them on their phones using the QR code, or if they download the Airalo app and login to your account then they could use direct installation. Let me know if you need any help. ^Jonny
