This video really helped me. I’m traveling to France, UK and Egypt. I was originally going to purchase 3 individual ESims, but now with your video, I know I can just purchase one global - discover ESIM. Thanks for the tip!
I've tried installing other esims and thinking I did it correctly, went on my travels to return home to find a huge bill from my network provider😢 Your video was FANTASTIC!!! Being able to stop, start and rewind the video as though I was being given a personal installation session from you was brilliant. You covered everything I would see and I am now more confident in the esim installation this time. Fingers crossed it all works out once I'm away and more importantly no extra charges from my current provider when I return home. Wish me luck. Many, many thanks.
Hey Rose! Lots of luck for your trip. As long as you have data roaming toggled off on your primary SIM and Allow Mobile Data Switching toggled off on your eSIM then your carrier shouldn't charge you any roaming fees. If they still do, then let me know as I will personally visit their houses and throws eggs at them, because that's entirely unfair. All the best! ^Jonny
Sorry to read that@@brettmccabe750 Unfortunately that can happen if you don't turn data roaming off on your primary SIM, but that isn't a fault of Airalo. ^Jonny
I’m the worst when it comes to understanding instructions, but you made everything crystal clear - thank you so much! It was so cute when your wife and baby passed by, btw. I could still hear you very clearly! 😊
After having spent hours trying to figure out Airalo your video literally saved my day - and perhaps my sanity too ! thank you! :) Greetings from Denmark

Really enjoyed this review. Very informative and helpful and loved the humour. Most tutorials are cold and clinical and I think some people tend to ‘switch off’ concentration. This really helped me decide which eSIM / provider for Australia. Cheers 🍻

Wow, very helpful for a beginner like myself. I watched two other videos about airolo before my Asia trip, but yours is easy to follow. I already set up airolo account and just nervous to click buy. thank you, you're awsome!
Monito, I was hoping you could help with a question. Once we are in the country we are visiting, and we have activated our Airalo eSIM, and turned data roaming on for the eSIM, and turned data roaming off for our primary/home country cellular provider, SIM; should we also toggle, "Turn on This Line" to "off" for our primary/home country cellular SIM? Hope that makes sense. And thanks again for the awesome video. I watched a few others, and yours is by far the best I found.
It isn't necessary, but you could toggle Turn on This Line to off as a means of peace of mind. If data roaming is set to on for your eSIM, and Mobile Data in Settings is also set to your new eSIM with Allow Mobile Data Switching toggle off then you wouldn't need to turn your Primary SIM off entirely, but again, it can provide peace of mind. Just remember if you switch it off you obviously won't be able to receive or make calls and texts. Hope that helps.^Jonny
I’m in Europe now in the middle of the big cellular network outage now so I might be looking at giving this a try. Is it hard to change back to original SIM after done using it? Thanks for posting this 👍🏼
Great video. Thanks for sharing.I didn’t understand was why to leave iMessage and FaceTime set to primary. Wouldn’t you want that set to the eSIM? Thanks
You're welcome! No, if you still want to receive iMessage and FaceTime then leave this set to Primary, but don't worry your phone will use your new eSIM for data. Just make sure the eSIM is set to data roaming. Let me know if you have further questions. ^Jonny
It's curious that the word "Activate" is used when "Install" is what they mean. I was told by Airalo that "activating" is done when the eSIM is about to be used.
An excellent instructional video, just what I need. I will be using Airalo for the first time on a forthcoming trip to Europe in about 6 weeks and will definitely be referring to the video again. So glad I researched it now, I will definitely be watching this video again a few times as I get closer to my trip. GREAT job & THANKS!
The BEST video 'Monito'! I only wished there is a video on Android (google Pixel exactly). I am beginning to be a world traveler as I am retired. Also I see that you have lots of travel recommendation on how to transfer fund but most of them requires local contact in the country where I setting foot at. Is there anything where I can send to Google Wallet or anywhere that does not require local address or bank info?
You could get a bank account or card issued in your native country that's good for spending internationally and in a foreign currency and always use that for your travels abroad. If you'd like, feel free to share your country of residence and I'll try to make a recommendation. ^Jonny
Love your video. Very helpful. Thanks. However, it would have been even better...for me...if the phone screen was not in night mode. That way I can cut and paste instructions and print them out, without wasting a ton of ink/toner. I know, very old school. Thanks.
Best thing is using an old device from your shelf , to avoid confusion between the eSIM and the your original (primary) physical sim which you use in your homeland
Excellent video, very clear explanation of how it works and the process. I’ve steered clear of esims before now but feel confident in using now. One of my trips later this year is in China, think that might be more of a challenge !!
Honestly, that's so awesome to read because it's precisely what I wanted from this video, I wanted people to feel more comfortable with eSIMs. All the best with your trip to China. ^Jonny
Is there any consequences to just put everything on the esim instead of having default line, imessage, and facetime on primary and then turning off their roaming once at a travel destination?
It could become costly? eSIMs are a great way to access affordable data abroad, but if you're staying in the same place for a long period, then buying a SIM or eSIM from a local carrier that provides data specific to you location is going to be cheaper. ^J if
There's just one thing. As Airalo's esim is only for data transmission, you can't make or receive phone calls. Which, in principle, wouldn't be a problem since nowadays everything is done via the internet, right? Until the day my car rented by SIXT broke down in the interior of Spain, in the middle of nowhere, and the only way to contact the rental company was BY PHONE CALL! It is serious. There was no WhatsApp number or anything on the rental papers. Only one telephone number to contact in case of an accident or vehicle breakdown. A good-natured Spaniard who was passing by on the road stopped and was kind enough to make the call. Here's a tip.
Thank you for all of the instructions. It is very helpful. So, now it is set to go, and when I land, it should automatically connect and work, yes? Thank you!
Really useful, thank you. To be clear, we’re going Barbados and I don’t want stupid charges. What do I toggle to ensure I don’t make non data calls or receive them?
Just toggle your Primary SIM off. Do this by switching Turn On This Line to OFF. That way your normal primary SIM will be totally shut off for your trip.
Yeah you can, they could activate them on their phones using the QR code, or if they download the Airalo app and login to your account then they could use direct installation. Let me know if you need any help. ^Jonny
Hi, it’s the best tutorial I’ve seen here on TH-cam. I have question, if I already arrived in the destination can I still buy the esim? Thanks in advance
Great question! Yes you can, you would be activating and installing immediately, so the only potential issue is that you need a reliable internet connection, but hopefully you can find one at a coffee shop, hotel etc. Glad you found the video useful. ^Jonny
i purchase esim for use in Australia, download, install , activate, can not use it without wifi, please be advised ? try to text or call in australia, not working ?
QUESTION: Thank you for your video. I have saved it and downloaded the app to use when I travel out of the country. I do have a question. Would you say this is beneficial to use as your total phone plan?
I don't think it would be cost-effective as I'm assuming you'll need calls and texts? And those eSIMs cost more money, you would probably be better off getting a SIM card from a local network/carrier. ^Jonny
I opted for a physical SIM from Optus $35 deal for 90 gb for 28 days. I bought it at Brisbane airport. The process was very quick and seamless. Unfortunately, upon ‘recharging’ for the next 28-days the cheaper option of $12 for less data is only a 7-day deal. So you end up paying $35 again to get the 28-day allowance.
Found this video and saw your responds of your comments, so: Will be traveling to Japan, Singapore, and Indonesia. Can I just get 1 global e-sim for those country? Do I need to do something when I leave the country and when I arrive to new destination, or is automatic re connect to new destination(country)?
Hello Susan, I think in your case a regional eSIM would be the best choice, possibly this one (depending on your usage) www.airalo.com/asia-esim/asialink-30days-10gb. You would just need to install and activate it, once that's done it'll work when you move across from Japan to Singapore and into Indonesia. It is automatic, you don't need to do anything :) Let me know if you have any further questions, and make sure to use MONITO15 to get 15% off. ^Jonny
Great explanation until you got to describing selecting Primary for the Default line (6:55) so you receive calls and messages through your regular telephone number. This quote is very confusing: "if you do make or receive a call that is not through data or send a text message then you will probably charged by your network provider." Can you provide a more concrete example of how this would happen? What do you mean by, ""that is not through data?" If so long as we still have data in our plan, are we safe?
An eSIM that is data only will not cover you if you make or receive phone calls or make or receive SMS messages. This is quite normal, your carrier/ home network will still likely charge you for these things (depending on your plan) obviously you can avoid it by not making calls or sending SMS messages AND not answering the phone. To avoid this entirely, when abroad, if you’re happy not make calls or receive them or get SMS, go to Settings > Mobile/Cellular > Primary SIM and toggle Turn This Line to OFF. That will switch your main SIM off entirely. You can turn it back on once your home. ^Jonny
Excellent. I appreciate this presentation very much. One question I have. If I choose "Data" only, and the e-sim is the only sim in the phone, how will i use WhatsApp? WhatsApp requires a phone number for initial verification. Thanks.
WhatsApp will still work with a data-only eSIM. Your phone number works like your account ID or username, so deactivating your normal carrier SIM won't impact your WhatsApp, all you need is access to the internet. ^Jonny
This is a great video, but I have a question... at 7:10 you indicate that for iMessage you should select "Primary" to use your regular plan for messages and facetime. If you do that will you not incur data charges while traveling? I would think you would want to select 'personal' for the eSim plan here. If you select Primary because you aren't traveling YET how do you get back to this option to select the eSim plan for your trip?
Hey! Yeah that's actually what Airalo recommends, you select iMessage as Primary so you can still receive iMessages and FaceTime calls, but it won't use your data because your Mobile Data will be set to your eSIM. ^Jonny
This is so helpful! Question! In keeping your default line primary, that ensures we can call out in case of emergency right? I’m boarding my pets & want to be able to call the vet for updates. (So much to think about when traveling abroad 😂)
Yes exactly 🙂 Keep your primary SIM as the default line, that way you can still receive and make calls and you'll be able to contact the vets. Safe travels and I hope it isn't too stressful! ^Jonny
Sometimes this can happen, but I've found that it does eventually activate. Can you check again? Please let me know if it has now been activated. ^Jonny
great video. unfortunately I had dreadful problems installing the airlo eSim. I spent 3 hours on chat support, first they mistook another of my sims for theirs, then none of 3 install methods worked. eventually worked out it was because I was on work wifi, switched wifi off and used 4G network and it installed straight away. also asked me which of my current plans (I have 2 existing sims) I wanted to switch off....? - would be useful to add details around those for others trouble shooting, in your great vid.
Going to Europe will be on land at least 4 days in Italy a few in Greece . In between we will be on a cruise ship. I will have wi fi on the ship how do I make certain that I am not using my e - sim data while on the ship?
I would recommend just turning data roaming off on your eSIM, you can switch it back on once you need it. Do this via Phone > Settings > Cellular/Mobile Service > Data Roaming > *Then switch it off here, you could also do it within the eSIM under SIMs. ^Jonny
Airalo doesn't seem to have an eSIM for Cuba right now, I did a quick search with Monito's eSIM comparison engine (www.monito.com/en/esim) and the only provider we have available is GigSky. ^Jonny
Yes you can! But just make sure when you arrive that data roaming is turned off on your primary eSIM, and double check Mobile Data within phone's settings is set to your Airalo eSIM. ^Jonny
Thanks for the video it was really well done! I would just like to ask do I need to turn off my primary SIM card once I arrive to avoid the charges I might get with my original phone carrier. Thanks
No you don't need to turn it off entirely, you could just toggle Data Roaming to off on your primary SIM. I demonstrated this here: th-cam.com/video/O2hGwPV4K_s/w-d-xo.htmlsi=aZllwFQpTIGaTZ-U&t=573 - That will prevent any roaming charges. Just make sure that you do that on your primary SIM. Let me know if you have any more questions. ^J
When is the window for an Airalo eSIM activated? If you buy a week pass to somewhere and activate it all ahead of time and turn your home network off does it stay in limbo waiting until you use it and once it detects a network it uses does it start the clock at that point for 1 week or does it start the instant you buy it and put on your phone before the trip?
Nice explainer vid, Would you be able to receive sms calls on the esim designated number before arrival to destination country? For OTP services that require a "local" number?
Thank you! That's a great question. I believe you would still need to be at your destination country, as for a Discover+ eSIM to receive texts it would need to be activated and connected to one of its available networks. ^Jonny
No worries and yes it will use your eSIM because you will have selected that one for data roaming during the setup process. So if you want to receive iMessage and FaceTime then leave this as your Primary SIM. ^Jonny
Let me just clarify, if I don’t want to get charge on my mobile data network , you mentioned to turn off “data roaming, is that correct? Then my eSIM will work automatically as soon as I land my destination, thank you
Hey mate! Unfortunately, eSIMs can only be installed once and onto a single device - so your only option would be to tether or use one of the phones as a hotspot. Not ideal but this could be adequate just for low data usage. If you do choose this option, make sure to look for an eSIM that allows hotspotting. Cheers. ^Jonny
Hey! If you go to Mobile/Cellular Service then select the top option Mobile/Cellular Data. There you can change it. Let me know if you have any more questions. ^Jonny
@@Monitodotcom ohh alright, I accidentally exited during the installation process and was unable to choose one of the two for cellular data. Is it fine that I “skipped” it as long as I opt for personal/secondary on cellular data in settings once I arrive at my destination? thank you!
Question : Can you also use this to connect multiple devices via hotspot when travelling outside home country? I’m torn between try using this or the portable pocket WiFi.
Yes you can, I mentioned this briefly in another Airalo video (th-cam.com/video/EDD-zI6KGO4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=k1ft1wXCkkd29hlT&t=408), I've time stamped the video link. ^Jonny
Thank you. This was so helpful. Just to absolutely clarify - I don't have international roaming on my phone plan. I don't need it at all - right? The Airalo esim covers it all?
Hey! Yes, that's correct, with the Airalo eSIM activated you would be able to use that as your roaming data, so there wouldn't be a need to have international roaming on your main phone plan. Let me know if you have any more questions. ^Jonny
I haven't been able to, but I'm tempted to update my phone to a Google Pixel 9 to start making Android tutorials (it also looks like a great phone!). ^Jonny

Wondering how this will help with Roaming data? At present $35 Sim for 40 GB is going for $12. Much appreciated for your input
Can I remove my physical SIM card and just use the esim to be 100% sure I wont be charged by my carrier when I get back home?
Yes absolutely, obviously you’ll be unable to make or receive texts and calls but that’s certainly one way to guarantee you won’t be charged.
how about the esimcard number? is it auto-generated by airalo?
^Jonny
TY, even I understood and got it, so glad I came across this channel
is there a difference when you do manual because im going to USA in a few days?
Do I need to use/should I use a vpn with this eSIM??
Thank you for the guide and also for the discount. Was great help!
You're welcome! ^Jonny
thank you brilliant instructions. On my settings, my sim says 'activating' , does this take some time?
Yes, that can happen. Give it a few hours and then check again.
^Jonny
@@Monitodotcomawesome! Thanks!
Thank you! I did all the process but when going to Mobile Data on my Iphone it shows “Activating” instead of On or Off. What did I do wrong?
^Jonny
Can I use Airalo in CUBA? I did a search on the APP and the country CUBA does not appear on the list. Can I still use Airalo?
Airalo doesn't seem to have an eSIM for Cuba right now, I did a quick search with Monito's eSIM comparison engine (www.monito.com/en/esim) and the only provider we have available is GigSky. ^Jonny
Thanks for the vid, can I switch the on line off until I reach the destination on my new e sim?
Yes you can! But just make sure when you arrive that data roaming is turned off on your primary eSIM, and double check Mobile Data within phone's settings is set to your Airalo eSIM. ^Jonny
You made this process super easy, thank you
You're welcome Stacey!
does this can I shared my data like hotspot to my husband is phone?
Yes, you can use your personal hotspot with your eSIM as long as it is supported by your device and the network. ^Jonny
Great video, Do you know if I can order 2 esim at the same time for my wife and me or we need to order separetely? Thanks!!
Yes you can, your wife could simply scan the QR code from your app or order confirmation to install the eSIM. ^Jonny
such a useful video! Thank You!!
You're welcome! Glad you found it useful. ^Jonny
Hi great Video! Quick Question though, as soon as i land at my destination i should allow Dataroaming for the e-sim right? Thank you!
Yes exactly, visit Mobile/Cellular Service in settings and make sure your new eSIM is selected and your standard carrier is switched off. ^Jonny
Nice explainer vid,
Would you be able to receive sms calls on the esim designated number before arrival to destination country? For OTP services that require a "local" number?
Thank you! That's a great question. I believe you would still need to be at your destination country, as for a Discover+ eSIM to receive texts it would need to be activated and connected to one of its available networks. ^Jonny
esim works on pixel 7a too. didnt see it on the list :)
thanks for the video! very helpful! Does iMessage/FaceTime use the data from the esim even though you said to leave it set as primary?
No worries and yes it will use your eSIM because you will have selected that one for data roaming during the setup process. So if you want to receive iMessage and FaceTime then leave this as your Primary SIM. ^Jonny
Let me just clarify, if I don’t want to get charge on my mobile data network , you mentioned to turn off “data roaming, is that correct? Then my eSIM will work automatically as soon as I land my destination, thank you
Yes exactly, turn data roaming off on your primary SIM and check that your Airalo eSIM has data roaming toggled on. ^Jonny
Hey mate, can two people use the eSim while travelling? (individual device). Thanks
Hey mate! Unfortunately, eSIMs can only be installed once and onto a single device - so your only option would be to tether or use one of the phones as a hotspot. Not ideal but this could be adequate just for low data usage. If you do choose this option, make sure to look for an eSIM that allows hotspotting. Cheers. ^Jonny
Hi, where in the settings can I change the mobile data from primary to personal/secondary (new eSIM)
Is it fine that I “skipped” it as long as I opt for personal/secondary on cellular data in settings once I arrive at my destination? thank you!
Wow, what an amazing walkthrough. You rock!
Well thank you! Glad you found the video useful, let me know if you have any further questions. ^Jonny
However I cannot call anyone with any eSim card, right? Not good if you have lets say a car accident in South Africa??
^Jonny
Good presentation. Did you do a similar one for Airalo install on Android, as opposed to iPhone?
I haven't been able to, but I'm tempted to update my phone to a Google Pixel 9 to start making Android tutorials (it also looks like a great phone!). ^Jonny
