One important fact not mentionned in this vid: body blocks are forbiden in Rugby. Outside of specific circumstances ( scrum, ruck and maul ), you aren t allowed to physically contact any opponent... except of course the ball carrier. Which will give you a clue as why players sometime kick the ball forward for themselves: Once they have kicked the ball, they can t be tackled anymore ( sure, this is a gamble as the ball tend to bounce off toward unexpected directions ). No blocks ( combined with no forward pass and offside law ) also explained why you have both lines facing each other with the offense moving the ball to the wings by passing it in order to find a gap into the defense. For that regard, scrums, rucks and mauls play a tremendous role in Rugby union as they concentrate many players in a restricted area of the pitch leaving more room for the offense on the width of the field/pitch ( for Rugby League, if there s some Aussies here, il let them talk about it... i m french, and here, we play almost only Rugby union or "Rugby à 15" as we call it).
I much prefer rugby to American football. American football seems to stop every 3 seconds and that to me becomes very boring. Rugby is a much more flowing game and more exciting to watch. Any sport which stops and starts every 3 seconds. No thanks. I'd rather watch paint dry.
Rugby Union is the most popular sport for both men and women groups, and is the sport i like to watch ;). League is significantly less popular globally. As suggested before, videos on the Springboks and their 2023 match against France are both highly recommended! Welcome to rugby, it's a fun time.
No. Not roughly the same size. Roughly the same length but it's about 1.5 times the width. That's a lot more space. If the ball was out of touch it was in play If you are in frront of the kicker when he/she kicks it, you are offside. You don't kick to someone. You kick it to open space and your teammate runs to that space to recover the ball. Not only does play rarely stop bot neither does the clock. You score, go out of bounds, get a penalty, the clock keeps running. It does stop sometimes... serious injury, replay of uncertain play outcomes etc. That means no stoppage to sell you a car, a beer or dishwasher soap. The game just keeps going.
This is not the best rugby rules video but good enough. If you want to watch two most entertaining games of recent time. The 2023 RWC quarterfinals South Africa vs France and New Zealand vs Ireland are insane contests. They both happened on the same weekend and still boast to be the best games from the 2023 RWC. Have fun and welcome to the most beautiful sport ever. ❤ 🏉
Would definitely recommend what the OP commenter said. The biggest annual rugby competition in the northern hemisphere is the 6 nations which starts on the 31st of January and ends in March. England, France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales play each other. Would be cool to see your reaction to some of these games. When a player punt the ball, ONLY players BEHIND the kicker are allowed to go after the ball to receive it. Any players who are in front of the kicker are not 'active', meaning they can't go after the ball. Unlike AF, rugby players can't infringe or tackle any players NOT carrying the ball. Players from the same team can only provide support/option for the ball carrier to pass. Means, its harder for rugby players to run thru the opposing teams bcoz his teammates are NOT ALLOWED to create a clear path for him. Once tackled, & if a ruck is formed, the opposing players are NOT allowed to come into the ruck from the opposition side, OR EVEN from the side. They must try & get the ball from their OWN side of the ruck by creating a barrier OVER the ball while the flyhalf will hv to get the ball from under that 'barrier' created. Both teams will try & form this barrier. Simple
There are about 6 types of football that I can recall: Association Football i.e. Soccer Rugby Union Rugby League American Football Gaelic Football & Australian Rules Football. Enjoy exploring all those codes.
Sevens Rugby (Union) is the version that is played at the Olympics. The USA women are fast improving at this sport and will be Gold Medal contenders in 2028. Chaddington does not make it clear that a Field Goal must be "drop-kick", ie, the boot hits the ball at the same time that the ball hits the ground.
Played both codes - and much prefer Union - as the contest for the ball was the highlight of the game for me. He really does not cover the mall - if the tackled guy remains on his feet, plays on each side smash in to shove their side forward, pushing the upright locked together plays up the ground - a rolling mall. Kind of an upright, standing ruck, which you have to join from the rear - such fun.
The markers are not allowed to interfere with the PTB. As soon as it is played, they are defenders and must be careful not to leave space an attacker can run into.
Rugby is not violent... that is a nasty myth concocted by the ridiculous "hardest hits" type videos. Whole games can go on with only minor stoppages for injury. The click bait mercenaries who put out the hardest hit videos do so much harm to the sport.
This is not the best video to explain rugby. I’m sorry but by trying to include the two codes it becomes very confusing, especially when he goes so quickly. Even those who understand it could even be lost by the rate at which he goes. Having said that the English RFU one is pretty bad as well.
The rules all come from the imaginary line through the ball that goes from touch to touch. If you realise that this line defines what is onside, and what is offside.
My second comment here, but for your reference in the future, here are the kit colours of international teams, so you can spot them in highlights etc All black kit - New Zealand 'All blacks' Blue and White stripes - Argentine 'Pumas' Dark Green shirt and White shorts / Cyan blue shorts and white shirt - South African 'Springboks' All White - England 'Roses' Golden Yellow - Australian 'Wallabies' Dark Blue - France All red / White shirt and green shorts - Wales Light Green shirt and white shorts - Ireland Baby Blue - Italy Blue and white - Scotland Black shorts and White shirt - Fiji
I biased cause I'm french, but union with 15 players is fire . You should watch the highlights of Chelsin kolbe and Antoine Dupont l, they're at least imo the best currently playing pro games, they play for the same club but went against each other at the last worldcup finals between france and south africa . Hope you enjoy the sport, welcome to the family, greetings from Paris mate , have my subscription sir
Dude! Definitely seek out a local team. Rugby is a game for players of all shapes and sizes ( just look at Shane Williams, Faf De Clerk, Paul Springer, George North, Eben Etzebeth) so please don’t discount the idea. Even if you don’t join as a player your support will mean an enormous amount to them.
Your observation re: your body type and not being a place for you in rugby. Amazingly, it is a sport for all shapes and sizes. You could be a back, maybe a full back (no.15). Although, many tall "skinny" players are locks (2nd rowers). Take a look at footage of Courtney Laws for that role.
When you say rugby, you are referring to Rugby Union only. Rugby League is referred to as League. When the player tackled in league, the 2 defenders in front of the guy playing the ball are called markers can't impeded in the player playing the ball right up until the player playing the ball puts the ball on the ground. It used to be a 2 person scrum, also in Rugby League. The scrums used to be contested, so if you watch a game before the 2000s, they will be contested. There are 13 people on the field in a Rugby League game, compared to 15 in Union, so League is a lot more open and free flowing and League players are alot fiter and the more dominant countries in both codes are the same countries except South Africa who to my knowledge don't play League. Also seeing the ruck happens when someone is tackled and takes longer than a play the ball I would argue League is far more kinetic than Rugby.
Check out the most feared teams NZ All blacks and The Springboks. Die Hard rugby channel and Andrew Forde's channel. Some epic rugby compilation. Enjoying your reactions.🙌
massive oppertunity so say the ball was out of touch, clearly you dont understand the english language, to say ti the way you want to , means that the ball is still in play. maybe you need to just listen to the video, than impose your own biases onto a different sport, and also rugby is older than AF. honestly with that comment, you just come across as predjudice . Its like saying that the uK drives on the wrong side of the road, because it is opposite to america. To us here in the uK we drive on the correct side of the road for our system, it is different, not wrong! There are loads of your fellow country men that have watched this video, and you are the only one, that wants to change it to be in tune with the american nomacluture. it would be very rare for 1 team to dominate posession at anywhere near 100% a bad disparity woud be 66% 34%. Rugby has nothing to do with Soccer, they are totattyl different sports, dont confuse them! Correct, a ruck is just a feature of RU
The reason you can't play an accidental fumble forward is to avoid ambiguity. The referee doesn't have to decide if it was accidental or not

Around 130 countries play rugby.
Don't forget american football is based on rugby union/league.
2:31 😂😂😂😂😂 absolutely will not forget you said that 😂
THE TOP RUGBY LEAGUE TEAM PLAYED THE TOP RUGBY UNION TEAM IN ENGLAND AND THE LEAGUE TEAM BEAT THE UNION TEAM AT Both CODES

American Football 🏈 has 11 minutes of Free Play , Rugby 🏉 on Average has 50 minutes. I know how Yanks Love their Stats .
For a know-nothing american you sure are judgemental.
And no, the women wouldn’t let you play in their team.

@alexbarclay9615 oh so hurtful, from a unfit university kid who can't take a hit. Sorry RARA Player.
Sorry but I hate it when people say rugby (the only sport I watch) to something as boring as soccer

The “out of touch” comment was a joke. That’s a phrase that is used to refer to people who are lacking in knowledge. Just like me!
@@Chaddington98 so 2 countries seperated by a common language and a massive great ocean it is then. 😀
